Entered the FBI as an electrical engineer, as a youngster studied classical Violin and went to Indiana for that as well, and did all this stuff in the podcast..what..an..amazing..lady! Remarkably accomplished yet down to earth and personable..what a joy to listen to..!
I guess you can tell by the number and content of my comments I was super impressed by this podcast, ..well, I recognized an area code and then discovered I could take my new GS pup only forty five minutes away and see Ms Nordstrom in person! I am seldom impressed to this level with an individual, and as intelligent, observant, charismatic, insightful etc as Ms Nordstrom appears here, in person (multiply by at least five) I was completely floored with the sheer amount of knowledge she conveyed to me, how impressive and intensive she was in observing and training my pup, (or me, really..) and how quickly it became apparent that I actually know far less about dogs and their training than I could even guess compared to someone like this who has amassed such an amazing library of knowledge and experience..plus..she’s exactly as fun and personable as she appears here. I’m absolutely sure she doesn’t need this advertising, but, as a way of me giving additional thanks to her, if you are wanting beyond expert training, go see her as soon as you can!!
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the both of your fascinating conversation. Sonja was such a refreshing person to listen too. Thank you Robert once again for inviting such an amazing guest.
What an amazing woman! 🙌 Her knowledge is really something to be envious of, in a good way of course. Her statement “I’m the fixer I didn’t create the problem” is something that I will definitely be using in my personal life.
Sonja is an old friend from the NARA French Ring circle. Loved this interview! And I, as a former cellist, can say she truly is a bad a** on the strings! She's just brilliant all around. Nice job!
thank you for this episode; so many notes were taken for Anubis & future dogs in conservation detection work!! :) @robert & @sonja the white patch on the chest actually has an old tale linked with it in native American tribes, I can't remember it exactly, but it was something along the lines of that a wolf/dog with a white patch on the chest was special. Russia was where the fox experiment was. I did also go to a Tony robbins seminar...found out I had ADHD afterwards, focus is a huge issue or more to the point selective focus, bit like a dog's what ever is the most exciting/rewarding in dopimine 🤣
Really enjoyable podcast. One area of training I knew nothing about . I feel I learnt loads by listening to this. Truly wonderful content. Thank you both so much. Amazing Lady to listen to. Thank you Robert as always .
Definitely FBI trained in response skills. Excellent interview Robert. Type of questions that the "average ' guy would sit across from her to ask . Keep that quality of guests coming. 👌
Terrific podcast! My 13 wk GSD is going to get to explore all these different activities so I can find him some sort of happy balance to keep him busy. We are already in training..fascinating to get a glimpse of the professional working dogs’ lives and training..
Sonja is spot on creating drive is the key. I did 100 perfect run always for live and for hrd its timing and you need to watch the small head turns/ tail movement.
I sent an email to say how wonderful it was, and get advice about my new GSD, she responded within about an hour, and I had told her I am a disabled professional musician, and she said they didn’t get into it on the podcast but..she started at Indiana university as a performing classical violinist, got her degree, and I see she entered the FBI as an electrical engineer..I mean..just..wow..any one single accomplishment she’s done would make for an amazing and successful career and life, but, all that stuff??? Blows me away…
I couldn’t resist sending her company Atak-9 an email saying how much I enjoyed this, and that I’m a disabled professional symphony musician with a new German shepherd already in training, and asked if they had any advice, she responded personally to say (confirm for me) my current trainer is great, and that I could come to their facility to do a private lesson in scent or training..she also said she started at Indiana university and got a performing degree in violin..just..blows me away all her amazing accomplishments!! I had my hands full with my classical music career! And..she’s personable and down to earth, genuine..
As Ms Nordstrom was explaining the training of dogs to human body odors, living and dead, taking the proper “sections” that are representative, they didn’t even get into the fact that all that changes over time..my gosh, how can you train a dog to recognize all the changes as well? From someone alive, to dying, then slowly decomposing over weeks all those odors change..what a massive amount of details! And I wasn’t even thinking about all the bazillions of random animals that are dead or dying in the wilderness..
I’m in pre-puppy hood. I’ve been always had Boxers Now doing research on Malu. There are so many puppy mills in the nj area. Where the best place to find a good breeder?
Garret Wing from American Standard Dog Training would like to have a podcast with you! I would also love to see the two of you have a podcast with each other!
We have eight certified cadaver dogs on our search team. We work for our surrounding county sheriffs departments. All our services are donated. They usually feed us🤣🤣
I also disagree w comments re shelter dogs. When do we hold the owners responsible for THEIR behavior. Most shelter dogs were never socialized or trained or fed right or exercised right etc etc. When the dog grows up in this desert and doesn't magically train itself, it gets dumped and the "owner" walks out of the shelter w a new puppy.
She’s awesome. None of the letter organizations have the gushy reputation she gives them however, because of real life experiences of the victims they were supposed to help. Maui is just one horrific example.
There are plenty of “extra” issues that hindered Hawaii response, but, if you listen to the podcast she explains how massive the efforts are, how many huge organizations have to be involved..and coordinated..I have plenty to criticize our government for, but..I think we do a better job than most places in the world. If anyone here has the ability to paint a picture accurately, it’s definitely her, and she wasn’t gushy.
@@johncspine2787 I certainly hope that’s true, but it’s not what the residents of Maui are saying. And my family has seen the same response when we physically tried to help those impacted by hurricanes only to see private donations stopped by local officials without any other source providing help. And later finding a warehouse full of the things people needed just sitting locked and unresponsive. Maybe they’re prejudiced in who they help and don’t. This was another island with indigenous people. Or maybe it’s corrupt local officials. I just know they’re not the backup needed and expected. And in Maui after having to fill out reams of paper work, people who had lost everything were given a one time payment of $750 while we send billions of dollars to non U.S. citizens.
Most interesting course I took in college was a history course, where we were divided into a bunch of different groups. We all received different sets of data about a single event, and wrote reports and conclusions based on our experience of what was provided to us. Of course they were all wildly different. I’m not saying “yay, our gov is great you’re wrong,” just that situations like that are immensely complicated, and we rarely have all the facts we need to draw an accurate conclusion. @@freethinker1056
The UK has had bully/ bullyx bans for decades. They have a very bad track record for misidentifying dogs ex boxers being seized as a bully cross. The laws are draconian in how they enforced.
@@johncspine2787 Yeah but the whole time I’ll be thinking about Waco or IranContra or Ruby Ridge and I know that’s a personal problem but I’ll be wondering what sociopathic and un-American traits she has to want to work for Alphabets of all options instead of appreciating the dog info lol
@@D0B3RW0M4Nyou’re a moron to project those prejudices on every person who works for these agencies. Do you feel that way about the police? The military? They’re all sociopaths who hate America?
Well, we all do what we want to do, but, I think you’d appreciate seeing a better view into what we only glimpse the outer edges of..I’ve listened to this several times now. One blatantly stupid fact on my part of being stupid is we assume dogs go into the wilderness and find dead bodies and that’s it, but, I never considered the gazillion dead and dying animals that are already present. How dogs can discriminate odors just blows my mind! Or, how at the Pentagon she used a dog that easily can tell human remains, just bits, that are covered in debris, dirt, jet fuel etc..I wonder how that sense of smell opens the world up for dogs..they liken it to “dogs smell like humans see..”@@D0B3RW0M4N

Sonja spoke with me for over 40 minutes about breeders. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful!
Great to hear!
Thank you for having such an amazing guest, please keep bringing people changing the dog industry 💪👍
This was such a great talk. What an amazing life she has led and she has been such gift to so many people with her skills. Thanks to both of you!
Awesome interview. I hope a lot of young people hear this to learn the opportunities in both professional dog work and law enforcement. Thanks

The UK has had bully/ bullyx bans for decades. They have a very bad track record for misidentifying dogs ex boxers being seized as a bully cross. The laws are draconian in how they enforced.
I would look for a Black Lab, should l ever want one..

I look at the Boxer, what the backyard has done to the breed is disgusting.
