Really good video but @53:00 That is where SO many people need to watch and re watch. Your wisdom on the genetics of the animal would answer so many issues with the state of dogs these days. Genetics of an animal really determine the type of and ability generally for the dog you get. People may think "I think a wolf an a Malinois would make the perfect dog for..." like you said.. i saw it in a movie... I have a rescue from inuit that its mom was a GSD/Husky mix and no idea what the father was. I am training her as a service dog and i have been so lucky with her but she probably wouldnt be the best for being a SD.

This is exactly what I needed to watch today. "Love the dog you have, don't try to change who they are"; "My dogs don't meet other dogs"; I have recently lost sight of this, and it was so helpful to be reminded of it.
Yes! I think dog parks should be banned because there’s always going to be people that bring their out-of-control dogs and cause problems that could have been avoided by just not taking your dog in the first place. Plenty of places you can go besides a dog park.

The amount of information is so incredible on TH-cam, but it makes me a little wistful about wanting to hang out and have a beer with all my favorite people! I did get super lucky watching Robert’s podcast with Sonja Nordstrom, incredible lady and podcast, please listen to it or watch rather, you’ll learn so much, but it turns out she lives 45 minutes away from me, so I got to go see her, take my GS puppy, and seeing ppl like this in person and watching them train your pup (and you) is even more amazing…thanks for all the excellent content!

I need to go back..my more local trainers are more into their police/attack/bitey stuff and couldn’t care less about pets. Plus, my boy is now 9 months old and totally acting like a teenager! Still well behaved, but showing his willfulness..@@GoannaUK

This is very first time I have ever adopted a fearful puppy. She is a labradoodle / Shepard mix and I’m thinking I made a mistake, But I am determined to helped Cookie be a great dog.
Yes I agree with your conversation of breeder and breeding. I just adopted my pup from a home accident bred pup because I was not able to afford a purebred boston terrier, that I wanted. Was that responsible , probably not. But I did and I will make my decision right. Please don’t judge the owners for not buying a purebred they are to me trying to make a buck mostly. I just wanted a companion with manners and a few tricks if I’m able I’m 64 and a widow so I needed a friend. 🥰

Robert and Nate are the real deal. I have a Mal and never trained anything. I was able to train my Mal over time and finally was able to after I saw these two guys.

Professionally, I almost always refer dogs with behavioral problems to a trainer first. The working relationship between the dog and owner is most often the root of the problem if not the whole problem. A behaviorist - even a veterinary one - does not usually address this concept very well. So often, I see the behaviorists only address the problematic situation or request we prescribe drugs for the dog. BTW - pretty awesome to have my two "go-to" trainers talking like this!

i found with my current dog if i tried any form of dominance training it became a struggle and constant back and fourth.
Thank you so much, just what I try to bring across which is so difficult around here. Living and teaching in Switzerland as dog trainer lots of what you say I'd get stoned right away by the "positiv rocks" movement. It's insane whats going on here.
Did you know they went as far as letting Cesar Milan NOT present his show on stage?
We see a lot of unhappy dogs becaus the have week leaders, no guidelines, but are held as loved to death living dolls.

I have a question. 31.40 the question was asked and I love the answer but then what do you do if dog is not food/toy motivated, maybe nervous and doesn't want to connect with a trainer, would you be spending entire session on building the trust or get to work and set rules right away witch might take a min or so and hand the dog back to owner who now already knows how to address the issue and dog already knows what is being expected??? and from now on lettings the owner continue handling the dog helping and directing

Good breeders will put spay /neuter expectation in the purchase contract for pet quality dogs that aren't going to other registered breeders. If the buyer does not spay or neuter at the appropriate time, the breeder reposseses the dog.
At what age does Robert consider a puppy an adult ? I’ve done 4 month of socialisation and now want to limit random dog and person interactions but have no idea if this is still too soon
Did he really say Skinner made a mistake😮, punishment is an event that reduces behavior in the future, not something you do, just like reinforcement it's not a cookie, it's an event that produces more of the behavior in the future, 4 quadrants are just a part of the pie, corrections like he says are events, is just semantics
Scheomer is by far the best resource on TH-cam. Zak george needs to stay in his lane and rename himself a behaviorist not a trainer.

@@defendingthestrawman7103 the thing with kids is that they scream and yell and demand to have their will lol. Dogs are stuck on the lead forever. Zak's career will be over soon enough. I haven't watched him for years now. Dogs only live a short life and I wasn't wasting my dog's life using bumbleheaded, non-clarity training methods. I've never met a border collie that doesn't have some weirdness. I feel for them - they belong on farms doing the great work they were bred for.

If not only for what looks like new trainers he's talking with, setting them on the right track but also the 4K people that have seen this video. if Robert is going to say fearful dogs take things personal. They don't they can't its just a false statement. He's creating an issue, this is the problem in the dog training industry as a whole! You have someone watching this video and they decide well if fearful dogs take things personal then insecure and reactive dogs must take things personal and they start repeating it and you have a dog owner that believes a false statement. I WILL GARENTY IF YOU ASKED ROBERT HE WOULD SAY THIS IS SOMETHING THAT FUSTRATES HIM ABOUT THE +R COMMUNITY. The +R community has the same problem! Someone like Zak George says you dont want to be aversive his community takes that to mean I cant discipline with a correction. Zak has done a good job of associating correction and aversive (punishment). Look I understand you wanting to help Robert, his comment has nothing to do with expressing himself or being unfair to dogs or talking out about aversive training. fearful dogs simply don't take things personal animals can't!
Ok, I have to put my comment out here. I am not going to be your favorite commenter, but, GEEZ... So much non information! Ok, you don't have a solution for resource guarding? Just love your dog for who he is? What? Never heard that from a trainer. And I guess the comment "the dogs head would come off" really got to me. That's 1980s training. Too much off the subject here. See if you can just answer the question without leaving the subject! I'm not being mean or disrespectful, but I haven't heard much real advice. I think he doesn't know the answer and is talking around it. I listen to many trainers, Nate, Larry Krohn, Susan Garrett, Jay Jack, Tom Rose, Michael Ellis... These people will answer your questions! They are trainers with backgrounds in dog training! They can and will tell you the training they have and from who! Backyard breeders have been around for way more than twenty years! And how can you tell a puppy has weak nerves at birth? What? You can't! But you can pick the ones you think will have the better confirmation, maybe. Certainly you can pick the prettier colors. So much more I won't add to this comment. I can't be a fan of this trainer.

Dont take your dog to a dog park. My dog doesnt get to play with other dogs either except for two other dogs I know really well, and that's just once month or so. I like my dog to be neutral around other dogs.
I take my dog to the local park where there is a group of people, the same people and their dogs. I’ve been taking her (Jack Russell Terrier) since she was about 4 months old and had all her shots. She got to meet all the dogs and this became her “pack”. There are sometimes other dogs that come that are new or strangers. She has a great temperament i.e. knows her place in the pack, very friendly and I would say non confrontational. Doesn’t care if another dog gets her ball. Is not possessive over it. Would like to hold onto it but doesn’t care if another dog gets it. Doesn’t even care about other dogs balls. There are other dogs she plays with, wrestling and chasing and very respectful equal play. I have built a great relationship with her in terms of engagement. We go to the park mornings and evenings at the same time, same pack of dogs but she really is focused on me and the play. We arrive and do a perimeter walk around the park, off leash, she follows me and not going into the pack. We then go to the pack but she really want to hang out with me and play. So we are around the other dogs, she can ignore them and prefers to be with me playing, but she gets along with them all and I love that. Has great recall as I used the family whistle with her since she came home and she comes right away. Now I rarely have to use it because she just follow me. If I walk away to throw trash out or recycle the coffee cup she follows. And I reinforce this by walking around the park in all directions. I think engagement is so important and I have learned these basic things from watching videos of Robert training dogs and some of Cesar Milan’s philosophies about dogs. It’s been great this time around. Made a lot of mistakes with my first Jack Rascal
Talking about how Hollywood destroys so many dogs, my breed is the Australian Cattle Dog. Most people could not imagine just how bad the cartoon 'Bluey' has been for this breed. It's just horrible. These morons think it's a good idea to get a dog with the nickname "heeler" and bring it into their house with their small children. Then, they call the 5 month old puppy aggressive when it nips at their heels. And by a year old, the dog is at the shelter because the humans never even try to actually teach it any better, not effectively anyway.
The ACD is also another breed who is beginning to suffer more and more due to the idea of show lines vs working lines. The most important thing for an ACD is balance and moderation, above all else. Show line heelers these days have these huge blocky Rottweiler-like heads and these short, stubby little legs...and these breeders just keep breeding them more and more exaggerated. It's already so bad that many show-line ACDs can't stand in the sun for more than 30 minutes without literally overheating...it just blows my mind that people who are supposed to be experts on the breed actually think this is what they should look like.
