  • If you want to know about German Shepherds, you want to talk to an expert. In Germany this is called a Körmeister. This person is an authority on breeding. Johannes Grewe is a Körmeister and Avi and I ask some tough questions on the topic of showline and working line German Shepherds.
    The questions of what makes for a good German Shepherd and what dogs should we be breeding is always at the top of everyone's list. Talking with Johannes is talking to one of the foremost experts on the breed. Johannes has bred, trained, judged and lived with German Shepherds for most of his life.
    Avi and I get down to the serious issues. It's a long podcast but we cover a lot of topics including the evolution of the angulated German Shepherd, the sports of IPO, IGP, Schutzhund... and so much more.

    This is by far my favorite podcast to date. I truly believe Mr. Cabral that these podcasts are just as valuable for German Shepards themselves as reputable breeders. The information coming from these podcasts are gold! I am new to German Shepards. I have done 3 years of research before buying my guy, but have learned more watching your podcasts than I did with independent research for 3 years. They are great to listen to in the car!!!!

    I love seeing you continue to bring Avi and Johannes onto your podcast and channel! Hearing about Johannes’ medical situation, it made me wonder if he would benefit from a customized wheelchair. Although we don’t have the same conditions, my conditions can cause very similar difficulties with mobility, holding or grasping items (like a leash), and balance difficulties (I have constant vertigo and perception issues). If he still wanted to work with dogs, at least to some degree, this could potentially allow him to heel the dog and not have to hold the leash, but, still be able to supply corrections.
    Although I don’t have a wheelchair fitted to me, we were able to find one for sale that was a better fit, compared to the standard hospital wheelchairs I’ve been in. On SSI, I’m saving up for a custom wheelchair, as insurance will not cover it. Wheelchairs give me enough independence to work with animals and be outside again (I’ve been 90-100% bedridden since 13-14 years of age, and I’m 21 currently). A custom wheelchair goes a much longer way at providing that independence. I don’t know if it would work for his situation, because what benefits us are all different, but, I thought it may be worth mentioning, if it could allow him to hold onto his passion for a little longer.

Thank you to both of your guests not only for sharing their knowledge but for also having the integrity to be honest about how they see things. I hope for improved health for Johannes. Im not sure what the odds are in America for sourcing a successful GSD. Here in AUSTRALIA the breed is absolutely destroyed. Between back yard breeding huge HD RATES there barely capable of being a pet let alone a working dog. They are driverless, nervey, and very weak temperaments.
    I really enjoyed listening to you guys talk. Such an informative watch. Literally confirmed everything I think about the GSD.

    I “went local” to a German shepherd breeder, but they seem quite ethical, and have sourced quality animals. I drove and met the mother, the father, (sire/dam) played with all the sibling puppies for an hour. I asked the breeder for advice, he liked the second most dominant pup at that time, I did too. I wasn’t looking for the biggest and most savage, (regular residential w large yard, Intermountain west area, access to wilderness) I’m going to train to the dog’s abilities and happiness and mine too. I’ve been looking at pics of my pup’s grandparents and other relatives and maybe I’m falling victim to “pretty” dogs, but they all seem fairly accomplished at various show and events. My boy at about 15 weeks is a naughty little pill, training w pros also, good food motivated sit, down, touch, place, stay, good greeting strange dogs and ppl, but I’m taking the long view as the work is an investment for a companion for the future.

    • @johncspine2787
      @johncspine2787 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not understanding the “dissing” of the show line dogs, I mean, aren’t these the ones we see winning at the Schutzen events? My boy has national champions in Serbia and Argentina in his ancestors, at 15 weeks he seems great at meeting new dogs and ppl, energetic, wants to do the tug/biting stuff (I’m not trying to do that though myself, especially as he’s getting ready to teethe and I want a pro I’m already training with to help me..definitely don’t want to screw that up..) maybe it’s because I have no “true working dog” to compare him to..

    Great podcast, Avi is always great to listen to. My question for Avi and Johannes, Have the German Shepherds improved for police dogs as much as they have for the sport? I have found it really hard to find one for police work, as the environmental soundness is not very strong. Yes, I have had pups from 8 weeks up getting the exposures, but still find some major issues. I have tried pups from some of the "top" sport kennels and people you mentioned in this podcast, and not much luck. This is not a breed specific problem, just wondered if you could steer me in the right direction for certain bloodlines to look for.

    jetzt habt ihr mal über den Rücken der DSH's gesprochen. Könnt ihr bei nächster Gelegenheit über DDR bzw. ostdeutsche Schäferhunde sprechen?
    Auf den Meisterschaften sehe ich tatsächlich nur die Westdeutschen. Ich würde gerne von euch hören, ob es nur Politik und Geschmack ist, oder ob es eurer Meinung nach tatsächlich andere Gründe hat, warum man nur Westdeutsche auf den Meisterschaften sieht. Mein Stand ist, dass die DDR Schäferhunde grundsätzlich robuster sind. Daher find ich es zumindest fragwürdig warum nicht mehr der erfolgreichen Wettkämpfer auf solche Linien zurückgreifen.

    Genetics can only succeed in the right hands and correct environment. I was personally told by the breeder, "Don't take that dog, he's too friendly" So called "soft" He has become the most powerful personal protector. In certain conditions, genetics can be awakened by perfect union. Science is part of life: vision is what guides science. The perfect dog doesn't exist. The perfect relationship, and ability is key. I remember Avi saying one day, "He tried to breed with one top rated bitch in the world, unfortunately the off spring had hip problems" Genetics without sensing the bitch's emotions can give an unstable litter. Our neighbour purchased a top dog from a reputable breeder. That dog is highly reactive. He thought it was protection, until I came in front of her and worked her. She became tame. Knowledge and intuition goes hand in hand.

    Years ago, I was once kindly asked to leave a dog store in LA. I had a German working breed with me but was told that it was giving an Auschwitz survivor a panic attack. I immediately complied but felt bad...as if I was being looked at as a Nazi simply for having a German dog.

    Johannes is my ex father in-law. It's heartbreaking to me, to see his health condition. If you can read this comment Johannes, I encourage you to study the bible for yourself and remove anything you've been taught. Revelation 14:12 keep the commandments of Yah and have faith in the Messiah.
