Great video with tons of info! Don't forget the 5.429L(5.5L) M113 that was stuck in the CLK 55's! They made 362hp-367hp(Probably more in the later years where changes were made but the power changes weren't put down on paper completely).
So very true! I got M112 and M272/273 Engine cars, M 112 is so reliable!! I don’t know why Mercedes did not do their homework before coming up with these engines!!
Thankyou very much..just purchased one with the 112 engine..I am working on bringing back to a good state of health after being neglected by previous owner...Your channel has helped alot...again thankyou very much..
I went for the M112 in the W211. Because the M272 have the balance shaft/chain and inlet manifold problems that may occur. Not all have the problem but i did not want to take the risk. The other problem i know besides the valve cover leaks on the M112 is the harmonic balancer. The highest displacement of the M112 is a 3.7 found in the W220 S-Classe as a S350.
You hit the nail on the head in your conclusion. Older are more reliable in general, but newer are better in most every other way. I had a m113 05’ for three yrs and M273 10’ for 1 yrs. Both of their issues are well known. I experienced these well known issues on both engines. My M113 gave me overall less issues, but at 150kmiles it had a slight tick that could be heard when the window was down and it needed a quart of oil between changes. The M273 on the other hand at 150k miles I’m tracking down a code-less misfire (current theory) requiring $$$ in parts with crossed fingers. But when she is running smooth, I’ll take the M273 any day!
Yes, generally more power, less fuel consumption = more complexity and less reliability. There should be a sweet spot. Toyota / lexus might be the only car manufacturer that gets it right these days...
Agreed. Although I’ve been hearing rumblings that even Toyota’s latest products are letting go of reliability to achieve the latest eco/power goals. Time will tell.
Great video thanks! I put 250,000 miles on my 1998 E320 M112, no issues at all. Upgraded years ago to my wife’s 2000 E430 now with 130,000 miles, and my 2001 E430 Sport with 101,000 miles, both with M113 V8 and no issues. All of these had dipsticks, so it must be later years that have no dipstick. The 4.3 liter V8 has 275 horsepower, so smooth and effortless power. I think the M113 is the best V8 Mercedes has made, bullet proof with only routine maintenance needed. One of my best friends just bought a 2014 CLS550 with the M278 twin turbo V8. I told him to watch out for oil wicking that will ruin the CPU, also the cam solenoids. All that power comes at a huge reliability cost…
Thank you so much for this video! You did a fantastic job and made it very clear how different these 4 engines are. I'm thinking about swapping an M273 engine into my 2006 E350 Wagon that had that bad crankshaft issue 😢 All that extra power would be nice!
Hi, it is a good choice, you probably won't have much of issue regarding engine and trans, but bear in mind that W163 chassis is heavy and age is affecting these cars especially the interior. If you can extend your budget to a +2009 W164 might not be a bad choice either.
Thank you for a great video. I own a W211 M272 built 2005. It has done 108,000 km. I’ve had check engine lights three times: to replace catalytic converters, thermostat and the entire intake manifold (tumble flap). Re the defective tempering of the balance shaft’s toothed drive cog; is it your understanding that not all M272 engines in the affected VIN range actually end up failing? My understanding is that about 12 to 20% of “affected” M272 engines actually have their cog fail (the teeth wear smooth causing chain slip and cam timing codes) and require engine-out expensive repair.
Hi thanks for the feedback, by this time most of the M272 either probably have had the issue sorted by replacing the balance shaft or the car or engine is already in the scrap yard. I know this is a very common issue.
Good news is that if you buy a Benz with m272 with 100k+ miles, the balance shaft most probably won't be stock already, so the main problem is fixed :)
Thank you for this Very informative. I am looking to buy soon 2004 thru 2008 Chrysler crossfire they have the M112 engine. It's very good to know they are reliable engines thank you.
The Xfire (M112) used a dipstick in every model year (2004-2008). I was not even aware that some M112-engined cars lacked them. *Does anyone have a list of the M112 cars which didn't have a dipstick?*
I have an m112 supercharged engine in my Chrysler Crossfire SRT6. Great engine which produces 354hp. I heard that it has the air-induction system from a V8 but cannot confirm this.

Hello thank you for the video. I am currently considering purchasing a ml 350 with the 272. Did they fix the problems with the tensioner on the 2011 and up models? I am very familiar with the LS engines and I do the wrenching myself. Never worked on a Benz and I am hesitant to purchase one. Like I mentioned above Id like to get a 2011 and up with 100k-120k miles on it. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.
M112 is probably one of the best, most reliable v6 engines ever produced. Ive never had any issues on them other than my own stupidity (i am a curb magnet lol)
1. Correct tyre pressure. 2. Make sure the spark plugs are replaced. 3. Use correct fuel (octane) 4. Use correct oil viscosity. 5. Highway driving with windows closed. 6. Eco driving habits, higher gears and less unnecessary sudden braking and accelerations.
10:02 Actually the Facelifted CLK500 for the 2005/2006 model years did come with just the 7 speed AND the M113 engine before they changed to the M273 , not sure if the CLK320 received the same treatment... (At least the 320 CDI did come with a 7 speed lol)
Very interesting comparison. My 2006 cubanite silver CLK 280 coupe has the newer four cam shaft M272 engine with a seven speed auto behind it. Love CLK. Main issue I have had with it: is finding a mechanic that really knows older Mercedes and is actually willing to fix it in Canberra. Two ignition coils replaced in past year and I keep a spare in boot for NRMA to fit if another goes. At 139,500 Ks I do not have any cam chain, engine balance shaft issues. My car was made at Bremen, Germany. Where was your M272 engine made? If Mexico or USA that could be the source of the batch of bad balance shafts. Keep up the great content and explanations. Cheers Scott
Hi Scott, thanks for great comment, according to Wikipedia: "M272 engines that were sold between 2004 and 2008 with engine serial numbers below 2729..30 468993 often show early wear of the balance shaft gears," you can find your engine number by putting your VIN number on a website that you can google, I am also making a video on how to test these....
Essential to use a mechanical shop that has actual experience performing all difficult repairs on your engine, transmission, chassis. I’m in Sydney and the shop I use has mature ex MB dealership trained mechanics (mostly during their apprenticeships). It inspires confidence if you can ask: do you have any replaced M272 balance shafts around to show me? Good luck finding an appropriate shop. Btw, my W211 350 was made at the main Sindelfingen factory in 2005-according to the decoded VIN from the site: LastVin
I have a question, maybe someone could help me. I have a M272 engine on an R class, and I would like to install the supercharger of the C32 AMG, that block is a M112, would it be possible? Tanks :)
The whole point of the M272 is a high-capacity naturally aspirated engine with every sophistication (eg: twin-camshaft both banks, multiple valves/ cylinder), optimised fuel injection, aluminum block and NO nasty hot turbos or Kompressors. The joy of the M272 is in the large horsepower (about 275 bhp), capable of extended redline if ever needed, but making for a torquey, supremely UNDER-stressed engine and therefore a trouble-free long-life. They sadly no longer make such engines… now we are force-fed unpleasant tiny stressed-out turbos with an electric motor strapped on from MB, even in AMG guise!
The truth is mercedes Benz are lovely cars but the engines have become a real pain in the last 20 years. You will not believe it but I have had hardly any problems with the Ferrari's I have owned including 12 cylinder. I have run 5 mercedes in the last 20 years for work, always a problem.
