Hey Buddy: I worked with C/A's (cyanocrylates) for many years, in repairing and restoring pianos. I got the worst burn ever, and unimaginable pain, when I tried to soak up some spilled super thin C/A in a rag, and the rag and glue stuck to my finger. In my 50's, I was diagnosed with COPD, and I credit a great part of my lung damage to using the C/A's and the accelerators that used with it. If you ever see a stream of vapor coming off the setting mixture, get away! Those vapors contain cyanide gas! Get yourself a NOSH respirator, and charcoal filters for organic vapors, and even with that, position a fan to blow the vapors away from your mask, and don't ever let that glue/soda mixture stick to your fingers, unless you want a hell of a burn. Same thing for the plastic fumes, different poisons, but same result! About your method--if you are protected (hands, too with rubber gloves) put a thin layer of soda on 1st (no more than 1/8th"), level it out nice and even, then drip thin C/A along the edges. It will run into the middle, and you get a nice even job with no filing or sanding (when it matters). You can also use metal screen (like rebar in a concrete pad) with soda on each side for high stress repairs. The local hardware guys call old retired me MacGyver-'cause I'm always fixing things and looking for weird things to repair things with. Another reason, besides saving money, is to get the maximum value of things we have taken from the earth to make things (raw materials don't last forever) but landfills will last forever, and we're keeping stuff out of them! Good on ya! Take care!

What he said! I am constantly seeking work-arounds, tricks and cheap or free fixes to common modern component failures and sounds like you, Sir, are a fountain of quality tips and insights. Consider documenting your wisdom for the benefit of posterity and to offset the cost to your health. I appreciate it even if it is just in the comments of another video.

Some say Apple's Steve Jobs got pancreatic cancer from inhaling the fumes of lead, flux, acetone as he worked soldering motherboards as a young tech. These fumes may kill/ cripple you. Plastic soldering may be even worst! If you dont have fan+ good ventilation, then dont mess with soldering. Peace.

I was thinking the same thing specifically about putting the iron on a cyanoacrylate glue joint. Cyanoacrylate and burning plastic are bad enough, but burning CA is terrible.

If you have to explain frugality, resourcefulness and a repair technique demonstration to some people, then they may be too far gone to educate. For the rest of us, we really appreciate your efforts to teach how to do things around our homesteads that would otherwise bleed us of our hard-earned money. Thanks for taking the time to enlighten us.

I've been using super glue and baking soda for awhile. I put the baking soda in a plastic squeeze bottle with a narrow tip, 3 for $2 at Harbor Freight. Allows you to apply it more accurately. Also, you don't have to put it on so thickly. Build it up in layers just where it's needed.

I used the plastic weld method that you used on your hair dryer on two items. I welded a speaker onto its plastic cover like it was from the factory. Also, I have a Craftsman edger with a plastic gas tank, which is mounted with screws into it. It had 2 long cracks in it and was leaking gas when it ran. I welded all of those cracks up and had no leaks. It saved me $65 on that tank. Thank you for the videos.

Brother you are so right... today we have become a throw away society... instead of being inventive and resourceful we simply become consumers. And you are right... a penny saved is a penny earned... Now if you are a mega wealthy person or part of the 1 percent then I guess you would not be watching this video anyways. I have an old saw that works perfectly but the ratcheting knob has a knurled or geared portion that tightens the angle adjustment .. the single lever handle turns but you can pull the handle out and twist or rotate the handle so you don't need to worry about hitting other parts of the saw. Well the geared section is plastic and seems to have snapped so I will try to repair with your system... Failing that I will replace with a metal ratcheting handle from amazon. Hey you have over 200K people who have seen this video so disregard the haters bro.

Back in 1970 I was i a remote area in the Philippines for the first time and saw an old man fix a cracked plastic bucket buy using a strong wire and a fire as his solder gun. He made holes on ether side of the crack. Then melted a bread bags in an old can and filled in the holes and wire like stitches. It was just as good as before it broke. Weird but he changed my life as I could fix many things after watching him fix the bucket.

Your video was very helpful. The plastic water dispenser lever in my Samsung fridge broke. The manufacturer stopped manufacturing this $5 part and none of online parts shop has it. Since this was a lever where some pressure was put, I was going nuts fixing it. Also there was not much room to hold my band-aided supports. The super glue + baking soda compound is like a rock. Thank you so much for posting this video to share your knowledge. Really appreciate it.

great video, I’ve used the baking soda trick numerous times and it does what you say it does. I’ve heard that fiberglass reacts much like the ‘super glues’ to baking soda BUT I’ve yet to try it. Fiberglass cloth then adding a superglue to it is worth a test (for me) it might give the part some added mechanical stability (both are EXOTHERMIC reactions which can give off A LOT of heat) or even carbon fiber cloth(??). Note, I ALWAYS have some parchment paper around the shop because NOTHING sticks to it (just steal it from your wife or grocery store). Also, a sanded/rough surface gives you better results...it gives the adhesive something to grab onto

Thanks for the baking soda tip. One thing that can be acheived is to take some small band of tissu & put it around the piece to be repaired & then put the glue. It does the same exothermic reaction, u can even see sometimes smoke getting from it. after that ! As a matter fact, I repaired the plastic piece, which was litterally splited in 3 pieces & which is joining the motor to the middle axe stick in my washing machine, with some '' Scott Towel '' bands & instant glue. As you said strong as concrete! Any how, I' m now gonna look for ur other vids! Thanks again!

A little advice on the fumes when touching super glue with the soldering iron are pretty toxic, its better to do first the plastic weld n then the superglue/baking soda, but actually both ways work great.
You can even reinforce the plastic weld with pieces of wire or paperclip perpendicular to the crack pushing the wire inside the plastic.

This baking soda and super glue technique is used frequently on guitar necks, especially in cigar box guitar building. It works very well. I have a Craftsman powder coat gun that is made of plastic and is broken in half at the handle area. I plan to try out this technique to try to put it back together and stiffen the handle so I can salvage the gun. I am not so sure that the soldering iron would work so well on my broken gun, as the plastic is so very thin in that area which is broken. Since I really do not care as to how nasty the final produce may look as long as it works to effectively put the parts back together, and hold them rigidly, I don't mind the glob look of the baking soda and super glue technique.
Thanks for posting this video as I had almost forgotten about this technique. On my project, duct tape just won't do to fix it and the Gorilla Glue or other glues probably would not hold up to the strength necessary for the gun to be put back into service. This may not either, but I won't know until I try and the gun is essentially useless as is. I wanted to cut a piece of 1`/14" pvc pipe into a section and then split is so it could be pushed around the handle and glued in place to make it into a brace for the gun. I may still do that after applying the super glue and baking soda trick though.
I believe there is a weed eater spindle laying on your work bench in your video. Can you take some of that plastic weed eater string and melt it into the channel you in the cracked plastic part you showed in your video. Would it act as a fill agent by doing that?

    • @ricktipton9563
      @ricktipton9563 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not sure if weed eater line works but I know a lot of people use zip ties as filler plastic. My best results are when I can use a little bit of plastic from the item I'm repairing. Same types of plastics mend together well. Also, for a stress crack I try to use staples across the crack, melted into the plastic. Or, window screen laid across the entire seam and heated until it sinks slightly into the plastic.

About to do a superglue baking soda combo on my Sony Home Theatre style headphones (usage torsion crack on the camber angle right speaker arms). Done this before years ago for other things. And you're right about the exothermic reaction. BTW plastic fumes are up there with second hand smoke so avoid that stuff. I usually use chlorine bleach instead of isopropyl alcohol when I prepare to work with plastic. I find the chlorine slightly scars the outer surface of plastic making it better to work with compared to alcohol.
For those attempting this with lighters, you could burn what you're working on. You need to use an iron like method so if you have to use a lighter to heat up a piece of metal into a makeshift iron, that makes it significantly safer and easier.

Great work! Thanks for the tips! Learned a lot.
Not a waste of time at all in my opinion. It would take about 10 minutes saves you some money and variable costs for buying new one is more than fixing one if its just 10 minutes generally for most of us.

That's great man! Good info. I'd always rather fix an expensive part than buying a new item or expensive part that can be repaired.

Use a plastic cable tie/zip tie to weld and fill in the void.

I thought he was going to use a spool of weed wacker material. Would that work? Kind of like plastic solder?

Yup, whenever I use a zip tie and cut it shorter I always keep the part I cut off to use as a plastic filler rod... Also whenever you buy tools like a ratchet socket they almost always have some kind of antitheft device made of black plastic, keep that plastic too for plastic welding.

This is really cool. I wonder if I can apply this on a super small scale. Like game controllers, children's toys and what not. Hmmm. Gonna try it.

That was pretty slick lol, I'm gonna use the technique with more attention to aesthetics lol I'm gonna control the glue and backing soda more with barriers and forms to mold the shape of the fix :) Thanks for posting.

Used this video's recommendation and repaired the very thin plastic liner on the inside of our old (28 years) refrigerator where I had cracked the screw holes all around it. Now the door closes firmly and stays!

I don't think you wasted any time fixing the dryer. Thanks for explaining the save money concept. We are in such a throw away society. It's just wasting money and resources left and right.

This is awesome. Im going to try both ways of repairing....that is, superglue and BS or soldering iron. I have a shallow plastic pool which I purchased for my ducks (its a kids paddling pool shaped like a scallop shell). Somehow, when I emptied the pool I cracked it when I lifted it full of water. Its quite hard plastic, but quite thin, so I need to build up upon the crack rather than try and solder it together. Thanks for this. Very helpful.

I think you sound like Kevin Costner. Seems like most items have a weak part - which breaks making the consumer go out and buy another one - for it, also, to break. Always good to learn how to bet the system. Thanks, DW6.

I like this dude. He kind of sounds like Thomas Hayden Church. I didn't see the other video but I'm assuming the commenters were young people that grew up in the disposable era. I will be using this on a $500 Thule Cargo box. So just going out an buying a new one wouldn't be an option. Plus I like fixing things.

Where you went to welding with your soldering iron, Bondic would have worked nicely as an alternative. If you decide to give it a shot, would love to see a video.
