    I feel like the point of the KonMari method is more about getting rid of things if they bother you, like, I might be bothered by having too many clothes or useless knickknack, so I'd get rid of them, but I'd NEVER be bothered by having too many books!

      Exactly. I wouldn't be happy getting rid of my books. I love my books too much and I reread them normally so getting rid of them doesn't make sense and would do more damage then good.

    At the last count I had well over 1000 books. Probably more by now. I have kon mari'd them. I got rid of two books, they were duplicates.
    Every time I start to run out of space, I put up more bookshelves. I will eventually run out of space entirely, and that is the day I buy a garage to turn into a library.
    I essentially ran the school library as a teenager. It shows.

      please please please start using libraries because buying that many books is really bad for the environment

    • @rachelcookie321
      @rachelcookie321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sanians5685 I mean the paper from them probably comes from a tree farm not a random rainforest so it’s not killing a forest for the books. And it feels so much nicer owning your own copy of the book and being able to look back at it whenever you want. Books honestly are nowhere near the worse thing for the environment. I think something this is really bad is fast fashion.

    I'm not done with the Netflix special but most people took multiple days if not multiple weeks to completely konmari the house. I feel like your expectations on how long it would take was unrealistically harsh for yourselves. I think your full attic before / current / potential future is still going swimmingly! Don't give up on yourselves!! You're doing amazing! 😉😊 Sending love and encouragement from California. 💙💙💙

    I'm *seriously* in need of a KonMari (again) I already did my books though - many years ago and it was *extremely stressful* I just love my books but the feeling of minimalism is well worth it! I actually now have *three rooms* in my house that are your loft (sigh)

    I think you should always be decluttering, like clothes at the end of winter and end of summer, holiday stuff in January/February, etc. You’ll first get rid of things that are trash, junk, or you hate. Then eventually you’ll get rid of everything that you don’t like or use. Plus it gives you a chance to look at a thing you bought during the year between decluttering that section of stuff and be like “should I have bought this?”. Also it makes the decluttering go faster instead of if you did it every 5-10 years or even longer.

    I bought Kondo's book for my mom's birthday tomorrow, I hope she does better than you with her books, mostly her magazines, because she has a whole table covered by piles of them. Weirdly the rest of the house is spotless, I guess we all have some kind of uncontrollable, hobby related, mess

    I become quickly overwhelmed when I declutter. My solution is to work on a particular area and totally clean that area afterwards. My whole house is problematic, but I have succeeded in building bookcases and consolidating some books. The calm generated by this is worth the time. Must do more!

    I think you are doing a fantastic job. Ever hour you put in now is two hours saved after the move. (I might have made up that statistic, but it feels right.) Keep at it, group by group, chunk by chunk.
    Well done for labelling each box. My suggestion is to have labels on the top and at least two sides. Then when things are stacked one on top of another, you will still know what is in the boxes.

    • @veronicamassey1694
      @veronicamassey1694 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, top and side labeling is key! It helps so much when moving.

    • @04beni04
      @04beni04 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Related tip? If labeling is time prohibitive or you suffer from hand/wrist issues, use coloured tape to sort your boxes by destination/room. I've used both novelty duct tape and craft tape. Line of tape on all sides and top, and it will save you a ton of time writing everything else, be highly visible no matter where you are, and act as a sort of security. (Vs cataloguing your expensive and portable valuables in large black marker lol).

    I’m extremely proud of you both!! My hubby & I don’t DARE take Marie on because we both have hobbies which involve small items...(i.e., Golf Balls from EVERY COURSE HE HAS PLAYED) among all of his office papers & huge boxes filled with items displaying his company logo to give to clients. Since we share the office, I have a FEW things like my Scrapbook paper which is all compact in 12x12 containers, as well as a Cricut, many different die-cuts I may use later, adhesive, markers, chalks, stamps, plus jewelry making materials with multiple types of wire, beads, gems, pendants, tools, books on both scrapbooking & jewelry making, unfinished projects, etc. If he would just get another holder & put his extra golf balls onto it so they were up on the wall vs. a box on the floor, it would be SOOOO much better...🤣! What...🤷🏼‍♀️, it’s not like I have double what he has!! I might have ..ummm....4-5x’s?🙈 So you can see why HE needs to Kondo his things, right?!.....RIGHT??!!! 🤦🏼‍♀️ FELLOW CLUBBIES & SPOONIES... PRAY FOR ME AS WE DECLUTTER TO MOVE AS WELL PLEASE 🙏🏻 Love to all 🤗💜😘!!!

    I'd love to see a house tour! You two would appreciate it later when you're in your new house. I wish I did that for my old house!

    Your progress is going about as well as mine. I have boxes from moving in my living room and kitchen and I'm just going through them as I unpack.

    Love your vintage look. Saw your 2017 video a few minutes ago and this, and not much has changed. Except for your beautiful personality and your skill in communicating, they're both better than before if not slightly better 👍

    I think it’s adorable how naive Claud is about what goes into your attic. Lol. Wait til you guys have kids. The Kon Marie method definitely will not work then. Also mad props to you both for going up that rickety ladder. It gave me palpitations just looking at It. I really can’t do heights. Also I am intensely jealous of all your lovely Christmas stuff. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    I feel you Jessica. We're going through the same thing in my household right now. We're moving house in 2 months. While packing we're doing the downsizing as well.

    When I moved house, we had 15 years of accumulated stuff in our loft. EVERYTHING went to the recycling centre. So now my motto is, if I haven't used it in 3 years, then it's not worth keeping. I'm trying a similar approach to books, if it's going to be read again, simply beautiful or collectable, then it's a keeper :)

    I down-sized my Christmas boxes to 5 of the giant Really Useful Boxes this year. I was exceedingly impressed with myself.

    It’s official. You are my favorite TH-camr ever! I’m only sorry I’m old and won’t get to watch all of your adventures. Fly out flags proudly, youngster!

    I can really relate to caring way too much about small bits of paper, stuff I've written and making cute labels for boxes (that are still empty!). Seeing someone be the same way is a relief haha.

    Only keep 30 books? no just no I get too much joy from them to do that. Though you do sort/tidy the way I do start off eager and then get distracted by the little stuff. ❤👍

      I think you may have missed the part about Marie Kondo wanting to only have 30 books in HER OWN house. She doesn’t think that other people should only have 30 books! It’s just her personal preference. Her whole method is about keeping things that bring you joy, so if you get joy from having lots of books then you should keep them!

      Generally speaking Japanese apartment is not big. And she's not that into books I guess. That sounds understandable but they have a lot of MANGA books. So, she just rents MANGA? 30 is a figure even a lot of Japanese unable to achieve I think.

    They bring me joy, damnit, I'm not getting rid of my mugs 😂

    I love my books far too much to give Any away! I can look at a series sitting on the shelf and just be taken back to the time I read them and the world I visited

    I would first like to say "Hello!" It's my first time commenting because I just discovered your wonderful TH-cam page. Anyway, I have used this method to cull my useless knick knacks and text books from college. I think you've done a great job so far. Just try not to get too stressed about clearing out items. Moving is stressful enough and I would know. I've managed it four times.

    We all mistakes, it's how we truly learn things. You're doing great! We... Did not do this, despite gouse hunting forever. There are boxes of things untouched from two moves ago taking up my closet atm. Hard lesson.
