    Thank you so much for watching! All clothing donations have gone to the Scope Charity shops around Brighton (UK) so if you’re a vintage/retro fan I suggest heading to one soon! Let me know if you pick up anything of mine…

      I was just about to comment that everyone your size is wondering what charity shop received your non joyful clothes!
      If I did this I’d keep all my special occasion clothes and throw out everything else. But what I actually need is lots of pyjamas. Are you now missing useful items? Do you end up with lots of pretty summer dresses and no jumpers?!

      Thrift stores in the US...not so great for clothes. You have to spend hours searching for a single item that isn’t stained or full of holes. Then most things are WalMart or cheap label brands anyway. I would love to come look at yours👀❣️

    One of the really amazing things Marie Kondo has said about getting rid of clothes you have never worn is that everything you buy teaches you something. So if you never wore it then the item taunt you that you don't like wearing clothes like that.
    And hearing that made me feel a lot less guilty about the getting rid of things I never wore, or used, or read.

    • @chellybelle77

      I also like to think of the item having a new life, a better life where it will see more use and bring someone else joy. Then it actually makes me feel good to let it go, and know it’s going to a good home. Just think, every time they use it and it brings them joy, you made that possible!

      I go to a lot of clothing swaps, and it is really fun when ya actually see the person find that one item you struggled to let go of and be super excited about it. Or when an item made its way through multiple swaps and you see someone wearing it to a large event.

    I actually accidentally started preemptively doing the Kon Marie when /buying'/ clothes. Before I buy them I /really/ think about if I will wear it, how many times I would wear it, how I feel when wearing it (both does it make me feel good about myself and is it physically comfortable to wear). I hardly by anything anymore and now my closet is full of stuff I am excited to wear. Would recommend doing this - especially if you just cleaned up all your stuff.

  • @jimmerhoft
    @jimmerhoft 5 ปีที่แล้ว +300

    Like Claudia said there is something about certain pieces of clothing that can give you memory flashes. It's something that made getting rid of my "male wardrobe" after I transitioned a lot harder than I expected it to be. In the end I held on to some "commemorative" tshirts that are way too big, because they're all I really have to remember/prove I was there. That said my wardrobe is getting a bit out of hand so maybe I should take a good look at the pieces I'm not sentimental about.

      Some tshirts make for nice, soft, but kinda interesting pillows too! I used to take old tshirts I didn't wear anymore and cut the sleeves and all and then sew it up so only the neck area was still open and stuff it with soft machine washable fluffy material and then sew it all the way up and voila! New fun pillow! It's another option for repurposing things

    I'm breaking down the konmari method into very small pieces so it's more manageable and I have a higher likelihood of finishing the process. It took me a few weeks just to do all of my tops, but breaking things down into 20 minutes intervals followed by 10 minutes of rest (like the UFYH system of cleaning) has kept me moving. As Marie says, even if you go really slow you're doing fine as long as you're moving forward.

    I move a lot. A lot a lot. Like about twice a year if not more. So I've been doing KonMari style decluttering for years without realizing it and honestly? It doesn't last. If you're like me and you like collecting things you're always going to have too much. BUT it does make it so much easier to purge again. And again.... And again and again and again. It also helps you know what your priorities are! For example I have a set number of bins I use to move and I want all of my possessions to fit in them so every time I'm going to move I know what I want to give space in my boxes and what can go. I love everything I own now and that's the best part.
    Also yes I've been tidying recently too (in preparation for my first move of 2019!) and it feels amazing

  • @kizzyneetyan
    @kizzyneetyan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    Got rid of 5 bags' worth of clothes, shoes, and accessories doing my own KonMari-ing. It actually makes getting dressed in the morning a lot more pleasant, because I'm not constantly being confronted with stuff I don't really like, or that doesn't fit me. And it has made shopping really interesting - I really only go clothes shopping when I've noticed something missing from my wardrobe, and I just go and get that one thing, instead of a bunch of stuff.
    Scared to move on to the other categories though, especially papers... I have so much paperwork and old writing and essays and stuff...

      kizzyneetyan a good way for going through papers is to scan/take photographs of them so you keep them if you need them but get rid of the rest except ones that benefit from having hard copies. It’s a pain but I find taking photographs of things I need to get rid of really helps.

    I went through this, and highly urge others out there to take an extra step to find a really good outlet where your donations will do the most good! In the US people default to Goodwill but there are much better places. Homeless shelters, abused women shelters, stores that help people get back on their feet and sell clothes cheap for interviews and work, or an org helping disaster victims.

    Seeing everything folded and hung up at the end is so lovely! Also, I did this process a few years ago and have found that it does last because I now know what is necessary for me and my life, and I understand what it feels like when things do get piled up and overwhelming. I'm far more inclined to keep up my general organization rather than go back to having way too much!

    This (both the KonMari method and getting rid of things) is something my mom and I _need_ to do, but considering how sick we are we've made exactly zero progress. We have juuuust enough physical energy for keeping things clean (cluttered is something else entirely) but that's it. Our tax return this year should be big enough to hire someone to actually help us. I know it's going to be very hard for both of us, in different ways. In the last 14 years, we've been homeless twice. We put everything in storage both times, but the first time we ended up falling so far behind on payment we had no chance of getting our stuff back, which was devastating. One of reasons this was extra hard was because while I had insurance, from being poor, I wasn't yet on disability. I was able to get on it, which helped, though things were still tough So we had to start over, which we did, with a lot of inexpensive second-hand stuff (and we're both darn good at finding fantastic quality things)... until one day, the owner of the storage company called. He forgave the entire debt and let us have our stuff back! See, he had very recently become a father to a baby girl. When he looked at her, it made him think about how my mom had given up everything to take care of me (he knew about all my health problems) even though I was now technically an adult. And that he wanted to truly embody his Christian values as an example for his daughter, not just say he did. It meant we ended up with quite a bit of stuff, though we had room at the time. I won't go much into the second time we were homeless, though we were able to pay for storage the _fear_ was still there because of what happened. Honestly, a lot of what we have we could keep, it just hasn't been properly sorted through and organized. My mom leans more towards having things we definitely don't _actually_ need, but she uses (or did use, before she got sick too) for artistic things. _That_ got out of hand when I was a teenager, after she had cancer, but I help wrangle that now.
    Once again, I've written a long comment without writing about some of the things in the video and since I have a swiss cheese brain, I no longer remember any of it. That's the downside of only having a phone and not watching on a computer. Fingers crossed, I may actually be able to afford an inexpensive laptop after that tax return as well (though it's at the bottom of the list, I'm still hopeful). I'll watch again later and remember to take notes this time. 😂 I can't wait to see the next few videos on this! (OH, remembered a thing! That dress that had the lovely open back, but wouldn't work with a bra? Would a camisole still work under something like that? Not saying you should keep that specific dress, just an idea for other things like it.)

      Thank you for sharing your story. When we moved here, we made a lovely house. Then, we had a fire and I had not paid the insurance. It was too high. I didn't have the money. So, we lost our house and had to go live with relatives for three months. We were able to keep my dog there and one of my cats; but two of them went to boarding and our Labrador went to live with his sire. So, we moved three times that year and we now have two storage unit stuffed with stuff! The problem is that we could qualify for "Hoarders" and it sucks because all of my nice things are in the storage units!

    I tried this method and I focused on the small amount of storage space I have (I live in a single room, as a 29 year old. A little hard) I basically have to consider getting rid of something every time I buy things to keep it from getting cluttered, so it’s not easy. I would say that with my usual level of work-week entropy, it’s still better, since everything has a rightful place now, vs needing to be strategically fitted in somewhere. AND I have an empty cabinet I am still deciding what to put inside :) it helped motivate me to keep it somewhat tidy because it would actually appear clean if I did it, whereas before there was stuff everywhere, even when I spent hours tidying.

      Hope you are having a better day today. It is hard when one has pain fatigue and flares ect. There isn't alot of tips on how to declutter become more minimal when this is part of our lives. You sound like you are doing fantastic with the declutter, I find I have to also do little bits at a time. Sending hugs to you and everyone who is reading.

    I did konmari 1.5 months ago and my room is still 100% neat and clutter free. This is a game changer for me as it usually lasts 3-5 business days. Kidding, 3-5 any days at the most. I can imagine it will stay like this for years, I keep just doing a little more and a little more and it's even getting better. Incredible!

    I went de-cluttering like crazy over Christmas break, and got rid of 6 big bags of stuff (some trash, some donated clothes) and I felt great about it. I have hard wood floors in my bedroom, so I made it a personal mission to get everything off the floor so cleaning wouldn't be such a hassle anymore. And I do believe I've stuck to keeping my room cleaner than ever. I organized my vanity and dresser (which I keep things on daily) and got rid of so much stuff I didn't need/want. And I feel so much better about it. Keeping everything clean takes barely any time at all. Sweeping took maybe 5-6 min in total now from corner to corner! I want to tackle more things with this method, including getting rid of more extraneous clothes and items that I never use. This video was so uplifting and funny. Very happy!

    I decluttered my clothes two years ago (over the course of a month, it was too emotionally taxing to do in one day) and I've managed to keep my closet tidy and full of only things I love ever since! It was a really helpful exercise, and now when I'm out shopping, I find it easier to distinguish whether or not something really needs to be in my life. I hope you find the same happens for you! :) Thank you for sharing this experience with us, if there's one thing in the world I know will spark joy in my heart, it's your videos! :)

    I read both of Marie Kondo's books and I really liked implementing her method into my life. The first time I did it was, maybe, in 2016 or 2017...? And I actually influenced my hole family to join, that was so cool! In terms of keeping everything tidy afterwards, I do tend to loose the organizations in stressful or busy times (like the end of semester in college, things like that) but, what I think is the best part is, when I do the big organization (that I try to do once or twice a year depending on my schedule) I never have piles and piles to give away. The awesome thing about the Konmari method is that, unconsciously when you're buying things for yourself, you tend to only buy things that really give you joy, so when you go see If you don't want something, the piles get smaller and smaller. Is really nice

  • @Ikilintu

    WOW that's a whole lot of dresses! I've done the konmari method for only my closet, and after months its still the tidyest part of my apartment! I think it helped me see what kind of things i actually use and love to wear, and made me examine what kind of things i should avoid buying.
    The folding also really helps me w my built-in closet with weird shelves! I can see all my clothes and dont have to dig through everything!!!

  • @alexreywils
    @alexreywils 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've been doing this for years without noticing it. Every season I go through my wardrobe to find things I didn't wear or just didn't make me feel good about my body. Now that I've got a toddler and I don't work in retail, I noticed my all black wardrobe of undergrad is now comprising of black, white, grey,and a dusty muted pink. And it makes me happy.
    I now plan on incorporating vintage and handmade items in my wardrobe, which will mean another purging of clothing is to come.

    I watched a handful of minimalist videos mid last year and went through all my clothes then. The minimalists I watched spoke of things giving you joy or not and mentioning the Konmari method, but I had literally no idea what or who that was until I saw her show on Netflix. So yeah, I got rid of 3 bags full of clothes last year, but I could definitely go through all my stuff again. I really want to get rid of all the clothes that don't spark me joy, but then I'd have almost nothing to wear lol. I need to go shopping for clothes that brings me joy first so I don't end up naked!

    I'm loving videos on this konmari method! And I looove clear outs. It is definitely upsetting to see things that don't look "good" on you or suit you, or wish you still fit into (I mean you as in EVERYONE!) But let's be honest - once those items are gone, they'll probably be forgotten about pretty quickly! So it's sooo worth it to remove things from your life which make you feel negatively. Bye bye clutter and shitty feelings.
    As for items that remind us of a place in time or a certain feeling... I personally really don't mind letting go of dresses I've worn to a sister's wedding or ball etc... We have pictures and memories, though I know those feelings are different when you see the item in the wardrobe. If it's taking up space (and will never be worn again, cause ya know, "fashion"), someone else can make memories in it.

    Brilliant video I LOVE Marie Kondo! I’m a bit of a neat freak. I konmari’ed my entire flat a few years ago when I was looking to pay off an overdraft, since then I’ve embraced a minimalist lifestyle, but I was never very materialistic, so I guess that worked in my favour. It was really hard to let go of my cd collection though, even though I already had all the same music on digital! Can’t wait to see you “konmari” other parts of your home! 👍💜☺️

    Well done on starting the decluttering before you move house. May I suggest as you pack you check you want each item, then do the same as you unpack.
    I have been systematically decluttering for two years. It's been brilliant. My home is so much tidier, and I am more creative. Recently, I've been reading Ms Kondo's books, and have picked up several tips I have been able to use.
    My most recent decluttering has been to say goodbye to the every day, mis-matched ones, and to use the beautiful set we received as a wedding gift. I've taken it up to 8 place settings. Each time I open the cutlery drawer I smile.

    Marie did an AMA when her book was released in English - 2015 , and at the time I was getting into minimalism and researching traveling light - it was really refreshing going through it, and the tidyness didn't last for me at that time (I skimped over the 'home for each item's thing - but the life changing philosophy and values shift stayed with me and as strong as ever

    So i have actually started using the KonMarie method and it works well! But it’s also a matter of having the energy to keep it up. The method makes it easier for when you have low energy but i have gone weeks with just letting my clothes sit on the floor. It also helps to get the WHOLE household doing it because my mother has a habit of doing my laundry and putting it away; since i’m trying my hardest to stick to this method it gives me extra work if taking things that i normally fold but she normally hangs up off hangers and refolding. My mother also doesn’t fold the same way i do now which means i have to unfold and refold so the clothes fit in my drawers.

      maybe it would be easier to split the cloths up and sort tshirts, then shorts another day, ect that way you don't have to do as much at once. also have you told your mum what your doing? it might help to work something out so she doesnt wash the clothes that are being sorted

      I have a hard time keeping my clothes organized, let alone folded. I have taken to embracing the ‘designated buckets’ method for pretty much anything I can. I don’t fold underwear or socks, but they have a bucket that I can throw them in so they are organized. Also if I have too much stuff to fit in the drawer when it is just piled in, I probably have too much of that thing. Every few months I go through and reorganize all my clothes, get them folded and what not. But by recognizing that it will not stay folded and tidy, I limit what I have to what can still look tidy when disorganized.
