I watched it in the theatre and got the VHS. I never knew why it didn't get a sequel... And then you just told me. Way over budget and not enough attention was paid to it. Damn. And I never made the connection between the Prince and Eddington! He looked so different on DS9. Mostly because he lost the 70s haircut and beard. Krull was really good to 8 to 13 year old me. I'd probably pick it to death if I watched it today. Still, I'll keep the good memories of it.

@@GiantFreakinRobot Well, I seem to remember from the commmentary that it was a deliberate choice _not_ to make it look like a very real or gritty world. The actor who plays Torquil, leader of the Bandits, is Alun Armstrong, who was at school with my Dad, and they acted together in school productions of Hamlet with Alun playing Hamlet and my Dad playing Claudus, his stepfather (though my Dad was the younger of the two). Alun was kind enough to call me personally, when I passed on news to him that my father pased away last year. An absolute gentleman.

who doesn't love a ship with boobs 🤣 being a magnificent 7/ shichinin no samurai ripoff the story was very predicable and the effects were not stellar but the camp was strong with this one. For me Krull suffered from having a number of barely-named characters in the group that were seemingly present only to get killed off, they should have condensed these into one better developed character played by Sean Bean 😋
it got a shout out in "Spaced" where Bill Baily references it. I paraphrase - "I once punched a man for saying Hawk The Slayer was Rubbish, I should have said Dad, you're right, but lets give Krull a try and talk about it later"
Watching Krull is a joy to watch over and over again for the last 40 years. A great cast of Brits, the Glaive, Bernard Bresslaw as a cyclops, crystal spider, The Beast, and beautiful Lysette Anthony. What's not to love? Great to watch with Hawk the Slayer. Bless the 80s and disturbing imagery in PG films 😂
Krull wasn’t really unknown. It found its footing on VHS and non stop cycles on premium cable movie channels. Before becoming a common fixture on some of the Turner networks I think. It largely dropped off the radar in the late 90’s. It sometimes gets confused with the Robert Urich Ice Pirates in people’s memory.
Brilliant film. Part of the problem was it was up against strong competition like ROTJ, Octopussy and Supermen 3. But its a great film and a great soundtrack. And who can forget the lovely Lysette Anthony😍
I was born in '75 and remember this movie clearly. I thought the scene with the Clydesdale's in the latter half was the coolest thing ever, well besides the cyclops. I cannot even remember when I watched this last, but so many scenes started popping right into my head. The soundtrack was great too.
As politely as I can: I remember Krull, sir. I will remember the Glaive-that-isn’t-a-Glaive, Your Friendly Neighborhood Cyclops, and the sublimely ridiculous The Beast’s Moving Castle (“Minions! Time to march on the capitol of Whatitsnamia! To battle!” “I regret to inform you, oh dread Lord, after this sunrise’s totally random castle re-location, we are on the opposite side of the planet from that country!” “Well shit.”) long after trash like Rebel Moon(to underscore its forgetability, I had to look up that movie’s name).
Krull was one of those formative movies for me, core memories galore, like Conan and Sword and the Sorcerer. It had some of the flavor of Star Wars but was totally its own dish, loved it then and still love it today :)
Horner was likely not that expensive in 82-83. He was still a young kid and had mostly been doing B movie schlock and Roger Corman work. His only real A list big budget project was Wrath of Khan the year before. Ok 48 hours. But everybody remembers the music nobody remembers the score. And Horner had made his bones doing Star Wars ripoffs. Battle Beyond the Stars anyone? Wrath of Khan was what put him on the map as acceptable for larger A list projects. But he was still on the cheaper end of acceptable. We’re not talking John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, or other industry legends numbers yet. 1983 was the year that solidified him as a solid dependable film composer. Krull, Brainstorm, Something Wicked this way comes and Uncommon Valor.
Liam Neeson was a fan of Blazing Saddles. He wanted to recreate the scene where the guy punches the horse. He found out too late that the scene was a trick and the horse wasn't really knocked out. Liam was determined to knock that horse out. The director thought Liam beating up the horse was too gruesome and only left in the first hit. There's another twenty minutes of film with Liam's hands dripping in horse blood. One of my childhood favorites, loved watching this with my dad. The Slayers, the Seer, the Cyclops, the Fire Mares, and the Glave. When I was deployed to Afghanistan my Dad sent me a box of stuff from home, and he had made a Glave for me... Laughed and cried. Good memories.
Jesus put on the Neo shades and threw the Glaive in the Hairclub For Men episode. St. Peter was a rabbit! Hippetus hoppetus! Trey and Matt were definitely 80s kids.
Loved Krull! Saw it in the theater as a kid... the crystal spider & that scene in the swamp where the creatures dies & sinks into the ground are my favorites & I was literally writing this as you're mentioning them. Will never forget the sound that thing made!
When *Krull* came out, I did not go see it because I had the impression it wasn't very good. Thank you for confirming that. Judging by what you have put up here, I can't imagine what you like about this. Give me *Battle Beyond the Stars* any day.
I loved this movie when I was younger. I still find that theme tune jump into my mind every now and again, completely by random. I have watched it a few times over the years, and still enjoy it. 😊
They had a tie-in for Krull at my summer camp when I was a kid. All I remember is we had posters around and some themed games one day during the camp session, with at least one being some kind of Frisbee game with black Frisbees with a picture of the Glave on them. Really wish I had snagged one of those Frisbees. It did work, as I saw the movie in the theater later, after I was back from camp. Have fond memories of it.
You forgot to mention a very young Robbie Coltrane was also in the film! (He was in the Clip being pulled out of the Quicksand). And Thank You! This is the first time that I realized Space Jean Valjean played Prince Corwyn in this movie. :) Also in response to the comment about James Horner, I would counter he was more than a young unknown by the time of Krull because he did the score for ST: Wrath of Khan the year before.
Saw it on either VCD or VHS back in the early 00s, when my family would have movie nights way back when. Forgotten the broad strokes, but the Glaive and the narrator's punchline, "Our world of KRULL", never left me. Also I think I got traumatized by that one guy who slowly dies to spikes. Underrated film.
I remember Krull quite well. Seen it several times. I had it on a CED video disc. Still have the 2600 game and the comics. Although I never came across the Arcade cab back then I've played it since through MAME and it's really good. Damn shame the movie didn't go over well. I still like it and am pleased to see others do as well. Had no idea it might get a reboot. That might be nice. Guess we'll see.
4:30 As a kid, I always found stuff like that hilarious for some reason. The various melting faces, exploding heads, and people rotting while they're still alive in Indiana Jones. The meltdown scenes from 'Street Trash' and other "melt movies." Emil's toxic waste meltdown scene from 'RoboCop'. Maybe I'm a sociopath, but I can't help getting the chortles. 🤣 4:44 It shows up in 'Ready Player One'. 5:39 I know that voice! 7:30 False. He should totally watch 'Krull' back to back with 'The Ice Pirates'! 7:32 Why does everyone misuse the word "decimate?" It means "to reduce by one-tenth." When referring to the Roman method of sadistic "discipline," it means "to kill every tenth man." 7:40 This is one of those movies that might benefit from a remake/reboot. Also, we're still waiting for a sequel to 'Innerspace'.
Not forgotten by me. Love Krull. One of my faves. Glorious Horner score and a great supporting cast of British character actors including a young Liam Neeson. Oh and one of my all time crushes - Lysette Anthony as Lyssa 😍
I remember bits and pieces of this film having watched it with my late father as a child. I remember the spider, the quick sand and the cyclops getting crushed by the door and my Dad explaining the meaning of it relating some old story about trying to escape death can lead to a painful one rather than accepting reality. Other than those things I can't remember anything else so can't have made much of an impression
I constantly have this soundtrack in my head. Probably the best part of a movie I love. The first movie I was exposed to that had a mix of sci Fi and medieval fantasy. The only thing i could have liked changed would be a greater influence on the fantasy elements. Have the slayers shoot green fireballs or something instead of blaster bolts. Just a stellar movie, really set my imagination on fire as a child. Really don't want J.J.Abrams doing the reboot though. He ain't dark enough.
If you watched it as a kid in the cinema when it came out, you enjoyed it like starwars, galactica, star crash…..back then you were happy when stuff like that was shown 😎
as a kid I loved sci fi, fantasy, and horror movies, and Krull was no exception, I even have a prop replica of the glaive, my only disappointment is that it was only used once, it struck the beast in the chest killing it then the Black Fortress got sucked in to space taking the glaive with it.
I'm old enough to have seen Krull in the theaters. Though my parents were confused because they couldn't figure out if it was a fantasy or science fiction, my teenage brain loved it. I still don't get all the hate. It was different for its time and still is.
A creative try on the grand scale that stumbled out of the gate and lost the big race, but remains a magnificent (pardon me) beast to behold for its particular poetry in motion. Annis and Anthony are gourmet chocolates among eye candy, the Black Fortress is a nightmare come to life, the Glaive is unforgettable and Master Horner's score is one of his most Wagnerian in the best sense of the term (and a personal favorite). Let us hope that if it ever does return from the pasture, it won't have to undergo unnecessary enhancement shot into its veins - it is _still_ a bona fide trophy-winner. 😎
I remember seeing Krull in the theater and bought the novelization. The primary thing I remember about it is that sometimes the makeup and special effects were so bad they completely destroyed my suspension of disbelief.
I saw KRULL when I lived out in LA when it first came out, but I didn't like it. Some of the visuals were good, but I thought it was kinda silly. I remember reading about the film in CINEFANTASTIQUE.
Love the movie Krull! The only gripe I can even find with this movie is that as a film it kind of just goes from point a to point b . The big bad is established, the quest, and then the defeat of the big bad, it’s all paint by numbers. This isn’t to say I didn’t like the film it’s just it’s exactly what you think it would be which I find to be refreshing. The cinematography and music score, and glaive are what I would say are the main stars of this film.
I saw it in the theater when I was a kid. I didn't much like it but the arcade game seemed to be everywhere for a while so I think I remember it mainly because of seeing the game around for the next couple years.
It had potential but it was like Lord of the Rings with magic and some tech. It was messy even for the 80s when I watched it in the theater. The villain was rough and the weapon was nothing more than a fancy throwing star with boomerang action. Michael Eddington!! - Captain Sisko 😂
So many videos claiming Krull is unknown or forgotten but the fact is everyone has seen it. I think maybe no one remembers it beat for beat. Is that what makes it forgotten?
Mmm...I think almost everyone knew about krull by seeing the case at vhs rental shops. Even people who never saw it will remember the short strange name and the epic picture on the front. Probably looked at a montage pf smaller images on the back while reading the intro.
Star wars is my favorite movies and TV shows and I'm still a big fan but Krull I will never forget this movie I still see this movie till today and I still have the DVD as well
It's a film with a big heart, and the actors gave it their all. For that, I can forgive its cheesiness. As a youngster I actively enjoyed the darker moments, but then I enjoyed Dragonslayer, too.

Dragonslayer was a masterpiece.

I will never forget krull not even possible
4:30 As a kid, I always found stuff like that hilarious for some reason. The various melting faces, exploding heads, and people rotting while they're still alive in Indiana Jones. The meltdown scenes from 'Street Trash' and other "melt movies." Emil's toxic waste meltdown scene from 'RoboCop'. Maybe I'm a sociopath, but I can't help getting the chortles. 🤣
4:44 It shows up in 'Ready Player One'.
5:39 I know that voice!
7:30 False. He should totally watch 'Krull' back to back with 'The Ice Pirates'!
7:32 Why does everyone misuse the word "decimate?" It means "to reduce by one-tenth." When referring to the Roman method of sadistic "discipline," it means "to kill every tenth man."
7:40 This is one of those movies that might benefit from a remake/reboot. Also, we're still waiting for a sequel to 'Innerspace'.
Krull will never be forgotten....
Not forgotten by me. Love Krull. One of my faves. Glorious Horner score and a great supporting cast of British character actors including a young Liam Neeson. Oh and one of my all time crushes - Lysette Anthony as Lyssa 😍
I had this on beta max when I was a kid. Great film, awesome soundtrack
I loved Krull as a teenager, I haven't seen it in decades though.
Saw the movie as a kid, good memories, excellent score btw 🔥
If you watched it as a kid in the cinema when it came out, you enjoyed it like starwars, galactica, star crash…..back then you were happy when stuff like that was shown 😎
as a kid I loved sci fi, fantasy, and horror movies, and Krull was no exception, I even have a prop replica of the glaive, my only disappointment is that it was only used once, it struck the beast in the chest killing it then the Black Fortress got sucked in to space taking the glaive with it.
I saw Krull in the theater and watched it later on TV. It’s one of my favorite 80’s sword and sorcery movies
I still love this movie. Saw it on VHS when I was a kid. Don't know why it didn't do better.
Krull is awesome - it is not forgotten
Krull is one of those films I watched as a kid and got hyped up to play so D&D
Love the movie Krull! The only gripe I can even find with this movie is that as a film it kind of just goes from point a to point b . The big bad is established, the quest, and then the defeat of the big bad, it’s all paint by numbers.
This isn’t to say I didn’t like the film it’s just it’s exactly what you think it would be which I find to be refreshing.
The cinematography and music score, and glaive are what I would say are the main stars of this film.
This movie is vastly underrated. I turned it into a setting for my dnd campaign. I even found slayer miniatures
"Star Wars" is a rip-off, uh, tribute to "Flash Gordon" & "Buck Rogers"
Don't forget Dune, The Hidden Fortress and The Dam Busters.
I love Krull. Watch it once or twice a year. Made my own glave out of cardboard as a kid.
Krull has a very small, but very dedicated fan base. VERY dedicated.
Worth a watch? what is it like to other films?
7:17 ahhhh 1980's chicken mcnuggets! They were so different to the cruddy offerings of today...... Now that does take me back!
I do vaguely remember this.
So many videos claiming Krull is unknown or forgotten but the fact is everyone has seen it. I think maybe no one remembers it beat for beat. Is that what makes it forgotten?
Honestly, this movie’s opening goes incredibly hard
Haven't seen Krull in years.
I was just watching your clips and kept going, is that Todd Carty, Robbie Coltrane...
Slayers as Stormtroopers? The Slayers actually hit their targets. 3:33
I saw Krull in the movie theater in 1983. It was okay. I haven't forgotten about it.
KRULL
Wow maybe it’s time I give this one a rewatch?? I never knew he went on to be a Star Trek villain either
Mmm...I think almost everyone knew about krull by seeing the case at vhs rental shops.
Even people who never saw it will remember the short strange name and the epic picture on the front.
Probably looked at a montage pf smaller images on the back while reading the intro.
Star wars is my favorite movies and TV shows and I'm still a big fan but Krull I will never forget this movie I still see this movie till today and I still have the DVD as well
I loved Krull. 🤠👍
I remember Krull. I even had the StarLog magazine that featured it.
Krull was amazing, and needs to rise again!
It's a film with a big heart, and the actors gave it their all. For that, I can forgive its cheesiness. As a youngster I actively enjoyed the darker moments, but then I enjoyed Dragonslayer, too.
