“Enjoy the Silence” is one of the greatest tracks of all time. So cool seeing you hear that for the first time. The thing is BANGER. Snare is probably a Oberheim DMX with some processing. :)
Enjoy the Silence is one of the best songs ever written of all time. I'm 42 and listen to everything from Depeche Mode to Cradle of Filth and Enjoy the Silence gives me goosebumps every single time.
Enjoy the Silence and Personal Jesus were huge when I was a teenager I got so sick of them, I never wanted to hear them again and I maintained that feeling for decades until about 6 years ago I decided on a whim to listen to the whole album again, for the next week or so I could listen to nothing else, I must have listened to it with no song skipping about 50 times. I finally decided to give it a rest but came away from that experience convinced that it is one of the very few perfect all the way through albums that I've ever heard.

You need to check out Black Celebration, Music For The Masses and Some Great Reward personally my favourites. You’d probably like them too so many 80s classics.
They have always been ahead of their time and a huge influence for a lot of bands. I am a German devotee since 1984 and still go to their concerts (together with my son, 16, now...). When Violator came out I was around 16 years old myself - a very important age for a young girl while falling in love with these dark huge electronic and hypnotic sounds, Daves voice and these sensual lyrics or bdsm topics 😅. But DM also have always had a great sense of humour. Here, they named the album "Violator" because they found this would be much more a perfect titel for a massive heavy metal album. Not for a record full of synths. They liked that idea. Thank you for this!
I'm so glad you got to experience this masterpiece. It's one of the most immaculately produced albums of all time and I love how it envelops you in its tender but full sound. Definitely my go to album for testing out new headphones. Also, I see this album as a perfect bridge between the massive and catchy sounds of 80s synthpop/new wave and the dark and introspective industrial music of the 90s ie NIN. Both eras embraced sexuality but in very different ways that I think this album balances well. And imo this is an album that heavily rewards relistens so you can better appreciate every individual sound and how they come together to create something so great. Great video as always king 👑
Great reaction! Enjoy the Silence is my favorite DM song (and top song of the 90s) Remember when Personal Jesus came out - preceding the album - sounded like nothing else out there. Also, gotta give props to Halo, still a banger, and always listen to that one on repeat
I’m so glad to see this video man. I’ve been following the channel since the King Crimson stuff and I love all of these reactions. Fr I appreciate your channel so much. Depeche Mode is one of the best bands of all time in my opinion. They made so much great music, I’d STRONGLY recommend the album after this, Songs of Faith and Devotion because it’s even better imo. It was written when the band was falling apart and the lead singer (Dave Gahan) had almost died twice from his heroine addiction. It’s so dark but beautiful at the same time and I’d love to see your reaction
Great review.. Great album. Songs of Faith and Devotion by DM is definitely worth your time. it's the follow up but completely different. my personal favourite
I remember hearing this album once and not enjoying it that much, but re-listening to it along with you has completely changed my mind. A total 180 Great work as always, Smags!
I live in Dallas in totality. The clouds parted just in time and I saw the total eclipse. It was spectacular. Also Depeche Mode is my all time favorite band and this is one of my favorite albums.
I've seen Depeche Mode live twice, and they are one of the most amazing live bands I've seen. Dave Gahan has the most insane stamina I've ever seen in a performer. He never stops dancing and singing. He's in his 60's, and he's still got all the sexy moves. I love watching him. Enjoy the Silence will always stand the test of time. It's one of the greatest 80's synthpop songs ever written. This album is one of the best synthpop albums ever written, along with The Pleasure Principle, and Replicas by Gary Numan. I've really been enjoying your channel lately. Keep it up. ♥
There is a decent chance you have heard track 3 before (Personal Jesus) - it was a MASSIVE hit and still shows up in TV shows etc. 6 and 7 were also hits.
played this constantly in high school back in the day - a classic that never gets old. hardly a wasted moment and probably still in my top 20. glad you like it too 😀
Even though I have moved on from 80's 90's synth, I think Depeche Mode and this album stand up over time. I would give Black Celebration by Depeche Mode a listen. I loved it in its day.
Absolute banger of an album! Definitely a big one for synthpop music. I definitely feel you in that it has a more modern feel to it. Sounds and production are really on point. It's so weird how they handled the bonus tracks though. My favs off of here are my World In My Eyes, Halo, Enjoy the Silence and Policy of Truth. I really hope to see you do more albums like this in the future!
This album changed my life back in 1990. I also went to 3 dates on the World Violation Tour. Still quite possibly my favourite synthpop album along with ‘Pet Shop Boys - Actually’, and ‘Erasure - The Innocents’
Please listen to ”The Decline of British Sea Power” by Sea Power (formerly British Sea Power). It’s honestly my favorite album of all time, and the band is one of the most interesting rock groups from the last 20 years. Even though there’s lots of other indie rock there is NOTHING like them. Their sound just feels really intentionally nostalgic and connected to nature while also feeling electronic. Their vocals are very interesting with many things you can interpret in different ways due to the odd vocabulary of the two singers. I would start with their first album which I named before, and it’s probably the best starting point since it’s their first and probably best. But they have lot of other great ones like “Do You Like Rock Music”, which is just lots of pure rock mixed with slower post-rock and folk tunes, or the soundtrack “Disco Elysium”, a pure ambient/post-rock album which is probably their highest rated on RateYourMusic with over 4.0 in rating (very rare). To summarize I would love if you dedicated even a small video to them. Me and my lovely dad loves Sea Power very much and I’ve listened to them ever since childhood, so it would make me and my father very happy if someone gave them a shot, and just said what they thought about it. Much love from Sweden❤️
Ahhhhh, that would be amazing to see! Can't say I saw this suggestion coming, but I wholeheartedly approve. I unfortunately missed out on seeing them during the tour for that first album, but got to see them during their tour for "Do You Like Rock Music?" They were excellent!
@@ijustneedmyself Aaaah haha feels nice that I’m not the only one here who’s listened to them. Unfortunately, I’ve never gotten to see them live due to the fact that I live in Scandinavia and not the UK, but I hope I’ll get to see them some day.
Watching someone listen to “Enjoy the Silence” for the first time is insanely satisfying. Glad you liked the album. I’d love to see you react to their album “Some Great Reward.” Ps, your shirt with the black and red background matching the album cover… *chef’s kiss*
I've been a DM fan for a long time (Shout out to KROQ 106.7) and saw them live at Dodger Stadium under a full moon with Nitzer Ebb opening. IMO Violator is their best album along with Music for the masses. They also did a good amount of remixes.
One of the best albums ever made. The production is top top. The sounds were half self made and half sampled, the quality is just mind blowing for it`s time 1990 release, 1989 produced.
Hey Smags - thanx a lot! I didn't even expect this legend to come up! I love the underrated Exciter album from them, you can compare how Depeche Mode sound like in 2001.
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) OIL OF EVERY PEARLS UN-INSIDES - SOPHIE (experimental electronic) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Martin Gore, who's the main writer + the main vocalist for songs "Sweetest perfection" and "Blue dress" said that Violator was supposed to be a joke title, the most "extreme, ridiculously Heavy Metal title" they could come up with. You def should check out their entire discography, but I'd start with Black Celebration, since it's their final and most polished album from the Berlin trilogy.
This album is so amazing and way ahead of its time tells a full story over great electronica music. It reminds me of the knife “silent shout” album. Def one you should check out
it is funny how Martin the writer wanted Enjoy the Silence to be slower , more of a ballad , but Alan & Flood wanted it more dance like, and this is the track that usually hooks everyone.
the album was released in 1990!! hahaha not 2005, at the time it was so innovative and clean sounding. I think no one had that sound so crisp, dark and sexy. All the songs here have something special. Halo and Enjoy are my faves. If you liked this listen to the following album, especially IN YOUR ROOM (album version), thats my fvourite track ever.
I really really think you'd El Jardín de los Presentes by Invisible, its (personally) the best album in Spanish of all time its a beautiful piece of Art Rock and Prog ❤❤
Depeche Mode has my consent to Violate my ears whenever they want 😩 If you want more DM, I heavily recommend their follow up album Songs About Faith And Devotion. I also wanna recommend a hugely influential synth pop band I love very much called Japan (yes there’s a band called Japan). You wouldn’t believe that their best albums Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum came out a decade before Violator.
If you want to review an album that’s so underrated and truly is unbelievable with EVERY SOUND and beat you’ve ever heard then listen to Moodswings Moodfood…. Early 90s and the album takes you on a journey….. they also use MLKs famous speech and put it to music. No one else has reviewed it and once you hear it you will wonder why.
Clean - Not that clean really if you notice the ominous music and the different invading sounds. It's more like a song sung by someone that just keeps repeating that he is clean to himself or someone he knows in hope that he is convincing. But the vibe of the song is that he isn't clean or he thinks he is, but the relapse is just around the corner. And even if he is at the moment, things definitely don't feel completely OK. Gahan, the lead singer, struggled with addiction for years after this, even attempted suicide in the mid 90s, and got clean eventually in the late 90s. I don't know about Martin Gore's (the main songwriter) drug history, but he also used, and also after this song. So history also suggests that the boys were not all that clean. And Enjoy the Silence - what a pop masterpiece!
please i fucking hope stuff like this (needle drop and brads whatever the hell) doesn’t bring fake ass posers to depeche mode. I already gotta deal with that with The Cure and Nine Inch Nails i can’t do it with Depeche Mode
Enjoy the Silence is one of the best songs ever made, glad u got to experience it
And policy of truth and world in My eyes are My favorite songs of the album
But on the scale of DM songs, imo, it is the most overrated.
“Enjoy the Silence” is one of the greatest tracks of all time. So cool seeing you hear that for the first time. The thing is BANGER. Snare is probably a Oberheim DMX with some processing. :)
Correction, it's a Roland 909. They sound similar. DMX you'll hear on a lot of the older New Order stuff including Blue Monday.
Yes, 909 kicks and snares were typical for house music of the period.
Enjoy the Silence is one of the best songs ever written of all time. I'm 42 and listen to everything from Depeche Mode to Cradle of Filth and Enjoy the Silence gives me goosebumps every single time.

Gretsch and synth.
