Thanks for letting me know that it is ok to fix even large tears yourself. I tore up my 5M Mantis last summer in the shore break- over 3 feet of tears. I bought some Fayme 5CMx5M Windsurfing Sail Sailboard Kite Tent Repair Patch Waterproof Tape from Amazon for $7 US and it arrived the next day. It does not have backing and it is very sticky and so you only get one chance - no pulling up and redoing. It came out great and because it is transparent, you hardly see the repair. I don't notice any difference in the wing and even in freezing conditions (Canada) with a coat of ice forming on my wing, there have been no problems.
Great video. At the 15min mark where u are using the flat of your nail to “iron” the creases out, I do that over all the tape but obviously it’s hard on the nails!…so what I do is get a piece of the backing tape that I peeled off, then use a hard rounded object ( I use the scissor handles ) a rub over whole tape area. I find it really binds the tape to the sail and irons out any tiny little creases and works well when working over the leach edge. I also keep a roll in my gear I take to beach, I’ve saved a few sessions by going back to beach, dry as best I can with a T-shirt, whack some tape on, hit the water again, then tape up properly after session. Great content as usual guys.
Foil finally stabbed my wing yesterday (twice, in fact). C'est la vie! Nice to have these reference vids to double check one's work. Any tips on foil sanding/filling? Most people seem to just live with scratches and edge divots, but it's nice to have options. Cheers!
Great training video! If you never damage gear, you are not advancing. A second person makes for a much better repair. I'll use tape on the day that I damage my kite, but take it to my local sail loft for a proper repair later that week. They usually charge $50 for a basic patch. It is amazing how damaged a kite can be and still be repaired and function well.
Great instruction! Question ... how did you tear the wing? I use my Naish, Slingshot and SEAPanel wings with a mountain board, Snakeboard and powerder surfer, and I ride some rough conditions, never torn a wing.
Good video... do you not apply a bit of heat (e.g hair dryer) to ensure it sticks properly? Please could you provide a link to where I can buy the 15ft dacron tape ?
Fantastic content, as always! I’ve been winging for about 5 months now. I experienced today my first wing tear-foil punctured the wing canopy. I just switched to an Armstrong waist leash and am wondering if there is a correlation between wing leash type and the likelihood of wing tear. With the wing leash attached to the wrist, there appears to be more overhead clearance in the water, even in the surf-that is, by being able to elevate your arm above the water line while you’re trying to surface and reorient. With the wing leash attached to the waist, it appears to prevent the wing from flapping in the wind and otherwise avoid an uncontrollable board and foil (which could be flipped over by the surf). I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide any input to this end. Thank you, Damien and Gwen!
Make sure you don't get the colored nylon ripstop tape from west marine. Didn't last 5 minutes! Haven't tried the dacron tape from west marine. Got PSP dacron repair patch from amazon, and had no problems.
CRITICAL VIDEO! Wings get order of magnitudes more abuse than kites, like 100X more. I have kited for 20+ years w/at least 100 sessions/year and go >99% of sessions without getting my kite wet or abused in anyway. My wing however gets drenched every session, hits the board all the time, get poked by the foil, and get crushed by waves and shorebreak regularly. Damage is inevitable and home repair is the way to go!
You can also use a Credit Card to push out bubbles For small tears I use TUCK (blue) Drywall tape - both sides. Holds up well, found at most Hardware stores.

Thank you for your info!

Great thank you for sharing!

Great idea we will add it to the list. Glad we could help!
So well done! Thank you!

It's coming buddy! You wait... Usually when the foil wing, penetrates the wing!

We do not, but maybe a solution that is better. Works fine with out in all my repairs.
NICE!! Well done ..
Thank you Christoph!

they should have colours in the tapes so a light green tape would be better Nice video guys
Do they break easily? Arent they strong?
They are strong 100% but Carbon fiber foil wings are very strong as well! It happens.
@@DamienLeroyTH-cam I just bought mine yesterday from adventure sports,im excited 😊
@@DamienLeroyTH-cam thanks
@@jorgeroman6723 yewwwww!
@@DamienLeroyTH-cam it took me a while after comparing with other wings.
