CORRECTION: China is not funding the new Phnom Penh airport. It's funded by local OCIC and other local companies like ABA, Acleda Bank etc. China was originally supposed to fund it but they withdrew from the deal.
Still a lot cheaper than US build or any nation for that matter. US build will be delayed and will be 10X the price. 55 years is not that long, before you know it, Cambodia will have sole ownership of the airport. It's the only way for Cambodia and other developing nations to grow. Building these airports and infrastructure also helps the locals build skills for future infrastructure projects, it's a win/win for both countries.
Thanks for sharing this. I’m not concerned who is financing or building these infrastructure projects. What matters is whether or not Srok Khmer got a good deal. I think the country did. These projects are huge and few countries can do them better than China let alone at a comparable price. I hope I live long enough to see a direct to Srok Khmer from North America.
Thanks for sharing your video RYAN please enjoy your time with your family 👪 in my beautiful country Cambodia today Tuesday March 5 in Toronto Canada the weather in Toronto today is 17 degrees very nice ok take care bye from milton Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Years ago.. 2009 my ex and I visited Siem Reap and the drive from the old airport had dozens of multi million dollar resorts, and when we went to the temples.. everyone seemed to be bussed in and out.. very few people went into Siem Reap township at all.. I felt that the wealth that they brought in was not going to the people themselves.
China is amazing the way it supports infrastructure in the region and much further afield. Very forward thinking of Kampuchea govt to work with China on this. I hope they help us with a water recycling plant for all the tourists.
Locally it is known as Kampuchea by the people who were born here and live here. What anyone else wants to call it probably isn’t important to Khmer people.
You were in Sihanoukville. I'm certain you saw the number of partially-constructed buildings abandoned by the Chinese due to the pandemic. To my knowledge, the Chinese have NO plans to ever finish those structures. Cambodia's caution regarding the Chinese building infrastructure is certainly well-founded!
I believe American and foreign aid did helped South Korea rebuild their country after the Korean War and many wars really, as the country was under Japanese occupation too. Korea is now rich and no longer depends on foreign aid. Japan also got foreign aid from the US after WW2, and even Thailand got economic assistance in building of infrastructure, to facilities to military aid from the US. We’re all in it together everyone can’t go alone lol, especially Cambodia who suffered a tragedy. Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc. are assisting too with aid and loans but China just rich right now lol so they got 💰 to throw. Honestly it wouldn’t take Cambodia this long to rebuild if they were just in a normal war but the KR era wiped out a significant number of intellectual people which makes it very hard to replace each and everyone of those skill set quick enough I guess. Rest their souls though. Hopefully 🙏🏼 they will be less dependent on foreign aid and be upper middle class in the near future.
I doubt people can fly in from outside Cambodia to day trip to Angkor, especially when the highlights are sunrise and sunset. It's a long flight from China's largest cities and even Bangkok. Perhaps people day trip out of Phnom Penh instead?
As someone who was born in Cambodia and living in the united states and vists Cambodia almost every year, I feel like my home country is doing better than ever, sure theres obliviously alot of corruption and shady deals but the lives of the normal population seems to get better. Our economy also seems to be doing better and with new roads and highways built by china which increase tourism around Kampong Som and those areas. Sure Chinese companies owns it for a couple of decade but in those decades the khmer economey will prosper alongside it. I would rather have my country have roads, freeways/highways, airports, be built by china and be own by china than wait decades for western countries to "provide a hand". Feel free to disagree, I want to hear the other sides opinions aswell.
LOL the Chinese airport. Indeed. I have lived in Cambodia for years and ‘most’ Cambodians I talk to literally hate the Chinese. Look at Sihanoukville… used to be a lovely beach town. Now… Chinese skyscrapers, casinos, Chinese people and stores and signs everywhere in Chinese. In Siem Reap, the Chinese go about in large groups, ignoring traffic as they just walk across streets en masse. Of course they don’t tip and most of them eat cup of noodles in their hotel rooms. They flood Angkor Park in large diesel buses kept running for however long the group stops, leaving the air conditioning on and polluting the air with diesel fumes. Oh, and did I mention how famously rude they are? And before you go bashing me, I lived in China for nearly a decade, my daughter is half Chinese, and I have and love many Chinese friends. Just all facts folks.
Well, it's true it's China's airport but it's also true that this brand new airport, which is impossiable for Cambodia to construct on their own, will help the local people a lot...
Great video, but to say that Cambodia wouldnt't be able to afford an airport is kinda disrespectful, there are a lot of local companies that can develop and finance the infrastructure too. The new phnom penh airport is now developed by the local company OCIC. Chip Mong is worth billions and it is local and so are many other Cambodian companies. Sometimes the west focuses so much on the negative of China but TBH they are doing way more than the Americans did. (Americans bombed Cambodia during Vietnam war and instigated the Khmer Rouge) Although China can be shady with business, I'd rather have them develop highways and buildings rather than the Americans develop weapons and war machines. Other than that rant, great video and I respect you visiting Cambodia.
I agree with you. I'm working on a video now about Chip Mong. China has been doing a lot for Cambodia, but the US has provided a lot of support too. Over the last 30 years they've donated $3 billion.
@@itchyfeetonthecheap Thanks for the response! Yeah thats true, but the only reason why they are trying to help is because they want to gain some influence over China in Cambodia. Since they've been losing in that region. It's all political, but it is a matter of which side you are choosing. Not saying China is good, but there isnt any "good" powerful nations. Its just that China has a strong history with Cambodia going back thousands of years where they settled. On the contrary Europeans and westerns always have the mindset of colonialism during that era while the Chinese adapted with the culture over converting. An example would be Singapore and Malaysia where there are a lot of Chinese and see what they did in Singapore and how rich they became because of the cultural mindset.
As much as I like the architecture, I wonder if this is a huge chinese miscalculation. When does an airport at an end destination need 15 gates? With the recession in China now, only the rich can afford to travel abroad. It is very much different to the situation before the pandemic when charter tourism out of China to Siem Reap was growing each year. But now and in the near future ???🤔🤔
😭You woke me up to show me an airport and road build by the CCP…..🥱Going back to 🛌🤣🤣😡 At least a watched the vlog while soaking my feet in an Epsom Salt bath.
Hi, May I share the most important news you will ever hear? God the Father sent His holy Son Jesus Christ(Y'shua Ha' Mashiach) from heaven to earth, to be born of a virgin. He grew up and died on the cross for our sins. He was put into a tomb for 3 days, and then Abba Father raised Jesus to life and He appeared to people and went back to Heaven. We must all sincerely receive Jesus to be a true child of God. It says in John 1:12 "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." Will you genuinely believe on Christ Jesus and truly receive Him today, before it is too late?

Yep was about to comment the same thing 👍
Also, the picture is the video was also wrong.
Sorry, I didn't realize things had changed for the new Phnom Penh airport. Thanks for correcting this!
correct!
@itchyfeetonthecheap if you gonna say that this is china then next time pls call Dubai New York or shanghai
Thank you so much...🙏 That was FUN ! Made me feel even more committed to retiring at least half time in Siem Reap... 💪

Totally agree 👍
Indeed. Good to go Cambodia.
A bit overly optimistic IMHO, as they use Chinese workers in building.
55 years is a lifetime!
Nice to see your mom and aunt visit Cambodia. As a Khmer with Canadian citizen it's nice having Canadians visit and enjoy Cambodia.
I’m looking forward to visiting the new airport in Phnom Penh.
Me too. It looks pretty amazing. I was thinking about heading over there to see how the construction is coming.
Thanks…. Good information.
Looks fab!
Very nice airports.

not long after pp airport got finished will it come true I think, just hold on 3 or 4 more years plz🤣
Just flew from Hanoi to the new Siam reap airport Lovely airport but horrendous queues / delays at immigration!
Fun fact, actually American and Australian make the most tourist visit to Cambodia in 2024.
the new Siem Reap airport is a long way from the city, i go via boat but used to fly when the airport was closer,

very detailed and curated presentation.
I bet you guys are going to meet up with For Riels. :)
I can neither confirm or deny drinking cold beers with them.

It's sad it's so far out of town and Singapore Airlines only fly's out in the morning now

Kampuchea name has been outdated. Cambodia 🇰🇭 is the proper term for today. Future name will be announcing when Cambodia is economically stable.
Locally it is known as Kampuchea by the people who were born here and live here. What anyone else wants to call it probably isn’t important to Khmer people.
This looks way better than than the 9 hour bus ride i took from PP. Bus broke down a few times lol

It looks better than Tan Son Nhat Airport in Sai Gon I must say

Well stated and reasonable statements
Misleading the title. Research before making an assumption.

I noticed that there’s no light on the bottom of the bridge at the end of this video. Just the sprinklers.
Take care, comb your hair. No change to spare, for the grizzly bear.
Get first aid care, at the night fair.
❤❤❤
How much is a flight from Phnom Penm to Siem Reap?
1 way... Like $90

It's great to fly in to this airport don't go by bus and avoid the scammers at the border

I hope you are correct.... I want to see the old/present Siem Reap before it becomes another Thailand...
Marcy needs to get her feet off the seats.
Yes, the westerners are always concerned if something is built by the Chinese. haha
Phnom Penh New International Airport ( Techo International Airport ) owned by OCIC ( Khmer ) and Cambodian government. Not china , Thanks
Thank you for correcting that.
55 years china will operate that airport? 55 YEARS????!!! OHH NOOO.. why cambodia agreed to it?
No, it's not true.
What’s up with the thumbnail man
Do not trust an airplane with a propeller Ryan
And what’s wrong with the thumbnail? So misleading 😂

I didn't wake you up, your phone woke you up. Toss that thing in your foot bath.
China is too busy new road in Serbia to EU... Cambodia is old news not interested anymore...
Cheaper for Cambodia to deal with China than the US who would never leave.
China own toll road in America lol

Let’s wait and see till the heavy rains and storms season, then we’ll know how the Chinese built airport is safe to use or not.🙏
America would not have the technical skills to plan, manage and build the airport.
You’re right, it’s China’s new airport, not Cambodian. And soon, China’s new naval base in the GULF OF CAMBODIA. (formerly Gulf of Thailand)!!!!🤬🤬🤬😡😡😡
and US has over 750 military bases around the world, remember?
