Hey Canon, that's Two dot ZERO... I guess there's a narrative that says: "if you buy something, don't expect it to improve over time." But I think that only flew in the '90s. Today, we live in a world where there is *absolutely* an expection for "smart" items to improve over time: from your car to your TV to your phone. Perhaps back when cameras were "consumer items" a manufacturer could get away with expecting their customers to just keep refreshing the hardware to get new features, but a Canon R5 is by no means "consumer" - it's an investment (certainly in my case!) that I expect to get use of for years. It's only the very lucky few who get the new thing every time it launches (Jan ;-) ). Consider me once bitten twice shy: why would I buy the R5 II knowing for sure that Canon will only give it the lamest of lame updates? Clearly, Canon are doing this to push folks to the R5 II when it launches, but the reality is I am absolutely not selling a camera I paid ~$5000 AU for, just to lose thousands when paying for the next $5000 (or more...) version that will be equally badly supported. Poor show, Canon.

I had an R5 and now I have the Z8... I like more the color in the Z8, according me they look closer to the reality and I have to work less in LR to fix them. Before to buy the Z8, I noticed that the Red and Yellow were very different (I shot the same image with both cameras), not sure if you have noticed that too. Even I used Canon for about 20 years, now I am happy with Nikon and the wider choices of lenses I have.

The Canon R5 2.0 fix for GPS is a very positive fix for those of us who use GP-E2 (GPS) with the R5 (one of the "minor issues"). For me, in a recent trip, it activated every 3-5K photos (about every other day) in bird photography, so not so minor for me.

Hi Jan, nice video as usual. Thr Z6iii rumours spec about no Bird detect should not be misinterpreted. The early firmware versions of the Z8 and Z9 did not have that setting as well, it was just called Animal detect. My Zf has the same setting, but I can assure you that the Animal subject detection detects the birds AND it’s eyes perfectly! The special Bird subject detect mode in the Z8/9 later firmwares is just a small step better than it used to be.

I always format my drives in APFS since I don't ever use windows these days. I have several of those Sandisk pro and extreme pro SSDs and so far I haven't had any problems. That being said, due to the issue reports I've started using them for less critical data and switched to Samsung shields for RAWs and VIdeo. Downside of the Samsung drives is the odd physical shape that makes them hard to label. Upside is the Samsung drives seem a little faster.

Thanks for the great summary Jan!
It is now obvious that Canon is holding back any substantial features in their Firmware updates in order to have enough for the Mark II. Hopefully not at the expense of often repeated and overdue improvements like stacked sensor, readout speed, etc...
On the other hand, they will certainly show less restraint in the pricing of the MKII. Even if not on par with the Z8. But because I'm still happy with my original R5, I will do it as alway and wait until the price drops...

  • @eric00214

The Nikon color science is so good, 2nd to none really.
You edit your images more on the yellow bias, so that makes sense you prefer the Canon. What's of though is Canon is known to learn to more red with skin tones. Curious if you're importing into lightroom with camera profiles and the picture control is causing the bias to yellow?

  • @charlestemkin270

I shoot Nikon, and I often find that small birds surrounded by leaves come out too green. I realize that reflections may be causing a green cast, but the camera seems to emphasize it. Using levels in Photoshop, 7:56 I set the green channel to between 85-95; that takes care of the issue.
I also find that Colorchecker software can be quite helpful. Periodically I shoot their card and have Colorchecker create a profile. Sometimes this profile makes quire a difference, usually coming a lot closer to the colors as I remember them.

Is it me or is the colour on Canon's mirrorless systems not as good as the DSLR colours. I often find my images to look too magenta, and the greens are often very flat and too warm. That's my experience with the R3, but with my old 6D the colours always looked great.

I do find it misses the colours, but mostly with certain lenses that give all photos the same shift which makes it easy to edit to something I like. Editing is definitly alot easier than on my old canon files but I do agree that the unedited raw doesnt look as good.

No hope for improvement in AF for z6ii, but I have used it for nearly 2 years now and it works. But z6ii is also misunderstood when it comes to bif. Set the AF to Animal small, and not put in that box for animal eye.The tracking for flying birds is then really good and I have many more bif keepers with my z6ii then my old D500. The biggest problem with z6ii for bif is not tracking, it´s rolling shutter. But switch to mechanical shutter and it works better. The rather new Nikon zf has eye tracking for birds that works well if not on same level as z8/z9, according to some users on youtube. But overall an improvement for z6ii/z7ii users.

YESS! Those Nikon green tones are driving me mad as well! I compared it with Sony though and found that their RAW files are actually very similar. Just when the respective standard picture profiles get applied, things get out of wack. I dislike the blueish greens of the Nikon profile so much that I actually consider switching systems (to Panasonic). When even spring meadows look like boreal forrests, things are going just a bit wrong. That and because I want access to those small Sigma primes 😬

With regard to RAW files, it's important to realise that what you're looking at before you make any changes, is how the software interprets things. If you shoot RAW and want the Nikon files to look as Nikon intended, there's only one way, and that is to use Nikon's own software. There you can choose the different styles, which Nikon calls "Picture controls". And the same is true for Canon. I use Capture One, and they implemented approximations of those Nikon Picture controls. But these are still just approximations.
Before I switched to Capture One, I used Lightroom. With Pentax files, that looked good. It usually did require a fair amount of work to get the images to pop, but it was fine otherwise. Then I switched to Nikon and got a D7100. I could not get the images to look how I wanted. This actually prompted me to try Capture One, and that looked much, much better.
So, yeah, the moral of the story is that the software has a great amount of influence as well. Which... is kind of also why I don't understand pro-sets. I mean, if the starting point can already vary wildly, who's to say if the pro-sets will even have the effect you intended? Or am I missing something here?
I had a SanDisk drive just like yours. And yeah, it failed as well. It was recognized as a USB device, but not even as a drive I think. So I could not format it. I now have a 1TB Kingston thumb drive that can achieve similar speeds.

    • @jan_wegener

Hi Jan, the R5 fw should rather have been called 1.10.0, because now one could expect to need fw 4.0.0 to make use of all 4TB of such CFxB card, because fw 2.0.0 at least allows the usage of half that space ;-)
But I do look forward to the fixes regarding startup speed and also error 70 or freeze, which happened to me like every 40k images.
Regarding the Z6iii, you just might be misreading the rumor: it could come with the innovative "No Bird AF" meaning that your portrait or real estate shots will no longer be distracted by the camera focusing on a sudden bird in flight instead of on the intended subject 😛 Sounds like something similar to Duade's request to get "No Grass AF" option where the focus should stick on the bird instead of jumping on the grass in front of the bird ..
Another oddball in the Z6iii rumors is that it would have higher res EVF compared to Z8/9.
You should have applied the Log Look from 6:25 at the beginning of the video to make us believe your room was so foggy due to your rain. We've had too much rain the past half year, ensuring the water supplies were the highest ever this millennium, after some summers without enough water ..

Jan, you know the appearance of the files depends on the RAWconverter? I don’t know what converter and profiles you’re using but I think your comments are deceptive. In one RAW converter I use there are minimal differences between the Canon and Nikon profiles whereas the Sony are much more yellow-green. Canon tends to be a bit more red, though all of this is easily mitigated in post. I do notice that my Nikon cameras produce more accurate AWB compared to my Canon gear.

Unfortunately the failing Sandisk SSDs is about a part that comes of on the disk itself. It's a design flaw in the material itself, not just a issue of formating.
To sleep with a peace of mind it is best to use Samsung or just build your own for now.
As for the disk using data on Mac:
I have to do the repair disk thing you talked about for colleagues that use Mac a lot in the past year. Strangely enough it just works on windows and when you "repair" it on a Windows machine it works again in Mac, so no data lost at least.

Regarding Nikon and the Z6 mkiii. Every time I raise the topic of stacked sensor and faster and reliable AF on Nikon rumors the tread gets mocked by Nikon fanboys how stupid of me to expect something like that from a $2000+ camera. I found that the OM system OM-1 mkii for approx $2300 ticks most of my boxes. Stacked sensor, bird AF, 20 MP (as I can not afford the exponential storage capacity and processing power for those high res pictures) and to my surprise even more: Affordable, compact, lightweight, very fast and long reach zoom lenses, that I could never afford from Nikon. I know the sensor is smaller and it has a higher noise level at higher ISO, but that is compensated by the affordable faster lenses. Then there is the shallower depth of field. Again in MFT I can afford the faster lenses which compensates a lot. And furthermore I don’t have to worry about too much of my subject being out of focus.

I continue to be disappointed in the R5 firmware updates. Where is Canon in 2024? Unless you want to buy the 200-800 lens, nothing is on offer for the amateur Canon photographers. As the R5MkII seems to be just a rumour, why won’t Canon give us bird eye focus? It seems that Canon have either adopted a ‘don’t care’ attitude towards their customers, or have given up as a serious photographic company…

Hopefully Nikon will add the the new AI detaction modes to their newer non pro cameras. [Z6 series] Fuji seem to roll down their features to most of their line and does not harm their sales it seems.
