When travelling by air especially in small aircraft, I wear a jacket with very large pockets, most of my gear apart from a big heavy lens or two goes in my jacket pockets , weigh the bag , when you get past the X-rays , reload all the gear back into your bag, they never check the weight again.

I don't know who's going to be buying these new canon cameras. Our disposable income has been slaughtered and not sure how many people have the sort of money required to upgrade....
Professionals will be fine.
But casual consumers will struggle.
I still like canon to be honest. IF you can put aside money, the cameras from canon with their L glass are a world-class combination and second to none for their respective class.
Certainly opening up the RF mount would help some
but if you're after the best lens anyways it doesn't matter. That's cuz canon's current lens line up caters to all budgets from 150 to 3000 dollar.

Hey Jan, I’m darn curious to see what they do with the R5 and how hard they apply the crippling hammer! I’ve been shooting R5 100-500 going on 3 years now. I process in Lightroom only. I bought the prosets a while back. I’m just recently getting better at processing. I have to tell you, I’m just realizing the real power of the prosets. I shoot craw and auto white balance. In processing, I change the white balance, then apply the prosets Vibrant with more contrast first. There is a slider there that you can control the strength of that. That is literally 95% right there. Crop and maybe a mask if needed. Just learning when to apply the proset is a game changer for me!!! Thanks!

Hi Jan, sounds like people expecting the R5ii release next month will be disappointed, but patience will be rewarded with insanely capable new tech ;-) Personally, I'll try to resist getting the R5ii for another 2 years anyway ;-)
I was also teasing my Nikon-friend the high-end Nikon cameras would use RF mount .. but he already picked up the RED takeover so he didn't get fooled. But you raised an interesting point in Nikon not having any Cinema glass .. they may not be able to get rid of RF in the short term !
These Nya-evo backbacks looks interesting indeed: they just seem to miss one feature I love about my current cheap non-organized backback has: around the height of the Nya-evo logo on the front of the straps, I'd need a strong loop just large enough to slide in the tripod foot (+arca swiss plate) from either 100-500 or 200-800. That trick makes it a lot easier to hike longer distances with those larger zooms. The images on the website show something on the top of the strap, but I'm not sure they are suitable to lift a zoom/extender/body combo ??

From nya-evo the 36 would be great and you can pack a bunch more stuff. Otherwise I have also been using an fstop guru UL for that combo

Nya Evo - my choice for a couple of years now, and I still wouldn't swap! I never ever had problems flying with the 60l one.

Canon should have built in memory for pre-capture or burst mode say 32GB which always transfers to your memory card when images are not being taken and remains empty for these modes. Canon yes I'm available for design work

I think R5mk2 is not coming in a while because Canon just started a discount campaign of R5 until May 7th in Japan. I dont think they disclose information during the campaign, except R1.

I own both the current R5 and Sony A1 and trying to decide what I may do to move forward. Really need think about limiting my RF or FE lens collection. Interested in your thoughts. Take care.

I was excited about the R5 mkII. The more rumours were spread, the less excited I've become though. With the current suggested specs the 8K is going to have to be pretty spectacular to entice me. Things such as DGO and a large increase in dynamic range, CLOG2, 8K 60p, 4K 160p without softness and full-size HDMI are the sort of things that would make it worth while considering this camera. Otherwise the proposed photo specs aren't enough for me.
I'm hoping to see the Z6iii soon. As for Nikon buying Red I think it's a good move. We'll see Red technology filter down to Nikon stills cameras but I don't think we will see anything like Red switching to the Z mount. At least not exclusively. Nikon doesn't have the cine glass yet.

Fingers crossed the R5II specs will be impressive, fast readout speed and 14bit would be great. On an unrelated note, I noticed that DxO PureRAW uses the neural engine by default now. If I'm not mistaken, it used the GPU before. In any case, version 4 is noticeably faster on my M1 Max.

First new camera in my wish list is the R7ii - why? I already have the R6 with the 100mm to 500mm lens with battery grip, SmallRig Frame and Sennheiser MKE440 stereo mic. I use this set up for both wildlife stills and wildlife video (much more time spent filming). I am filming in low light regularly, where the R6 really shines. I'm using this camera/lens set to film for our TH-cam Wildlife Moments. All are filmed on our property (we have so many native birds and animals on our rewilded property). Unfortunately the R6 set up is too big to carry in a waist pack (bum bag) on me all the time.
The R7 would work really well as a secondary (carry around all the time) camera/lens set up, with the RF 100mm to 400mm and Sennheiser MKE440 mic (I can get really close to our wildlife plus the APS-C sensor will help with reach). I would always prefer to use the 100mm to 500mm on the R6, but it is often not on me being a little bulky.. I also have the 1.4 teleconverter.
I'm hoping the R7ii will be much improved over the R7 and am more than happy to wait for its release.
The other body I would dearly love is the R3, but at the moment that is on the distant wait list due to its price.
Unless you do a lot of 4k 120, the R6 II could also be an excellent camera for what you wanna do and cheaper than R3

Wow. Nikon and Red. Canon missed a trick there.
I just use F-Stop ICUs and put them in real hiking backpacks.
They are way more comfortable than any regular photo backpack, as they are designed for carrying heavy weights over a long time.
Which size icu and backpack do you use?
@@bladerealm124 I have several ones depending on what I want to carry.
For overnight sleeping in the woods with tarp and all I use a 90L backpack, but for smaller things I use a 40L one, in Summer I have one with a mesh back and so on.
I suggest giving different brands a try, they are all different fits for different bodys and different heights.
The good thing is hiking backpacks are usually even cheaper than photo ones and they have more features.
You can start at decathlon with cheaper ones that are already way better than anything I have ever tried for a photo pack.

Traveling with your big lens and camera connected; bad move. I have a friend who did that, and the bag was dropped inadvertently, while traveling, and it destroyed both the camera and lens mounts. actually, he had his 1.4x on it too, and both ends of it were damaged too. he was able to get it all fixed upon his return home, but since it happened at the beginning of his trip, it really rained on his parade big time. Don't do that! On the other hand, just waking about in the field with it in the pack and connected, i don't see as much of a problem, but anywhere where other people have access to moving it, even if just across the lobby, seems risky.

I'm always terrified to have my tele lens attached on my camera and where the camera is at the bottom in the backpack. I'll always try to put the camera at the top. In long travels I always have them separated. Maybe I'm just being too paranoid.
These R5 ii specs look totally legit since its the path Sony and Nikon have already taken.

@@jan_wegener ouch! 🏋♂ But there is no way to skip that with that aperture and zoom in addition. I believe primes could be lightweight today. I think it is possible to make 600 mm f4 less than 2,5 kg.
What I was thinking is that if it is stacked then who would like to buy R3 anymore? 😀 Even now R5 is already very competitive with R3..
I have an R5 and it will be my last Canon camera unless they drop their restriction on 3rd party lenses.

Oh wow from Canon with a possible 200-500 f4. I just bought the 500mm f4 FL Nikon lens for a bargain 3k. Wonder what that will cost? I still rather have the 400 2.8 tc or 600 tc over 200-500 f4 but it will definitely give the 180-400 TC from nikon a run for its money. Though this ends up being such a small niche. Hell the 500 I picked up is supposedly only one of 4000 which seems crazy to me to have

This cam must have 60 mp at least, better skin tones, ethernet cable support for tethering, articulating screen like Sony, better ISO performance and AI features.
My thoughts are what will this do to the R3 ? Devaluation and maybe Kill it.
If the R1 is 30mp it would definitely make the R3 obsolete pretty much. I’m mainly using mine for video work, so I’d keep doing that, but it would be strange for sure
I think Canon view their flagship in a similar way they did with 1dx series. Like something better than A9 III. If R1 was super fast (like
30Mp is plenty when paired with the RF 200-800, even 24Mp is more than enough: just bought this lens and it works great with my R6ii
@@noelchignell1048 If 24Mpix is plenty for that lens this does not mean that low Mpix is an advantage. It just mean that this lens is mediocre. And it is. It is soft. Even on R5 it resolves, let alone on R7. Anyone who will be able to afford R1, will also be able to afford much better optics with which 30Mpix of R1 would actually be very limiting.
@@przybylskipawel not sure where you got the idea that the RF200-800 is soft: I own this lens and it's plenty sharp, just as sharp as my Great White primes . In fact I'm thinking of selling them off now. Jan Wegener and Duade Paton are both happy with it's sharpness. Also if a photographer can afford an R1 then they'll be using lenses like the RF 600 f/4 plus extenders so they don't need more Mp.
@@noelchignell1048 Neither Jan nor Duade has ever said it is sharp just that they are happy with the results they obtain, which is a huge difference, as they postprocess their pictures very heavily. Tests by Christopher Frosts shows that this lens is OK-ish in terms of sharpnes. Similar story with on digitalcameraworld who complain about IQ @800mm presenting close up's. Phil Thatch also claims that this lens in not sharp enough to be used on R7. Internet is full of evasive on unsubstantiated claims about this lens optical performance. But on Digital Picture we have the same story as Chris Frost showed at 800mm which, let's be honest, is most important feature and selling point of that lens. Also DP provide side by side comparative test of this lens and one can clearly see it is softer @800mm that Canon's 800mm f11 STM. It is also not sharper than most of 200-600mm class zooms with 1.4xTC.
If you claim this lens is as sharp as big white primes, which is frankly speaking crazy, one of the following can be explanation:
1. You are lying
2. You have so much buyers bias that it blinds you
3. You have problems with your eyesight
4. You perform sharpness assessment with completely inappropriate methods
5. You are talking about most ancient white primes there exist or they are malfunctioning
Either way untill you provide RAW pictures from the same body taken with Canon 200-800mm and any of these "great white primes" in controlled environment, I treat your claims as no more credible than claims that someon had seen Yeti.
sadly the nya evo fjord 60 backpack has a really bad carrying system - at least for me. Its stiff on the shoulder straps and way too soft on the hips so the hip belt doesn't really lift much weight off your shoulders and it keeps tilting away from your back. Very sad because other than that it would be my favorite backpack out there!! It has some great features. Now I own the shimoda action x50 and x70 and they have the absolute best carrying system I ever saw in a backpack and can highly recommend them, although there are some features they definitly miss in comparison to the fjord 60.

This camera is a disaster and it seriously needs to be updated , today I took 300 shots of Birds in flight only 10 of them were in focus that is how bad it is .

I have watched a TON of videos about the R5 II and the R1 for things that actually make sense. A lot of the rumored "specs" are just fabricated stories that don't even fit together. You're the only one I've seen who has done a logic check on things like the internal buffer. Even at "just" 45mp, high frame rates plus a pre-buffer are going to put a lot of strain on the internal buffer and the data channel to the permanent storage. And in a camera of the level of these two, nobody is going to be happy if Canon is imposing a crop in exchange for frame rates.
I have never thought that it made any sense to bring out the R1 at 30mp, but people keep insisting that since the 1DX III and the R3 were both sports/action shooters, an R1 with 30mp is sort of generous. It's not. And that rumored version of an R1 would be very, very disappointing in 2024. But the fact that we can't totally rule it out says that Canon has developed a reputation problem. They really need to get this right.
The other big thing, to me at least, is that high resolution plus high frame rates is a case for the faster storage. A CFexpress Type A slot, even as a "backup" just doesn't make sense at all. Not only do these cameras need two CFexpress B slots, they need to be Gen 4. Sadly, if the R1 really does come in at 30mp, it would make the Type A slot feasible. So we can't totally rule 30mp out either.
My big fear is that Canon is going to claim to have algorithms that will make 4K look "just as good" as 8K oversampled 4K - or even native 8K. Or that they are going to use AI to make 30mp photos look "just as good" as 60mp photos (even when printed large). And I know a lot of people got excited about the rumor of a DGO sensor going into the R1, because that sensor claims 16 stops of dynamic range. None of the comments I've read seem to be aware that that dynamic range is only for video, and only if you're shooting CLog2.
Yes, always a difference between hype and reality, especially when it comes to flashy specs.

this would be very disappointing. 45 MP isn't competitive. While megapixels aren't everything, there are other players in the market which make it hard to pick a canon. For years canon was at the top, but now, for some reason, they are taking a less aggressive approach and losing to Sony and the like. Nikon's acquisition of RED will also pressure canon to hopefully innovate more.
There is a reason why the R3 is lower MP than R5. Look on the sidelines of any major sporting event. Canon is #1 for a reason. The people that pay the bills need to transfer to their employers quickly. They also need the new camera to feel like the old camera for fast learning curve. Unless you print large prints why do you need such a high MP Count?
@@charlesjames9783 yes, cannon is really big in the sports market. I live in NYC and go to NFL and NHL games and there are A LOT of canons. But a fair bit has to do with the really great telephoto lenses that canon makes. More and more, I'm seeing pro sports photogs on Nikon systems. Again, it's not ALL about the megapixels, but in a world where a 65 or 85 mp sensor is achievable, As far as transfer rates at sporting events, the stadiums I go to have a dedicated room for photographers to quickly transfer the media via internet, USB or hard drive. Why not blow the competition out of the water? Canon is the biggest company I believe with everything from copiers to cameras to heavy goods. It will be interesting to see the final version but I'm predicting a mediocre reception. Especially for those already in a system.
In terms of the need for higher mp count, it's nice to have a little room to digitally push in.
Why bother about the R5ii? Every time I see something like confirmed spec it is a joke, it is still rumour. 45mp, 61mp, stacked sensor, it is guessing. I would like a 61mp sensor, improved AF but I will have to wait. I do not see why Canon won't increase mp count, they did on the R6ii, and Sony is over 60. Of course once it is announced, and everyone pre-order it will be 6 months before anyone gets one!
Agree 100% about the flagship having only 30mpx. This is 2024 and they already released the R3 which fits the low mpx sports/photojournalist model. They should have a worthy competitor to the Z9!

With Canon still not allowing 3rd party lens sport with AF on RF mount, and Sony producing a global shutter, why would anyone in their right mind buy a Canon Camera. I think the R3 was their R1 but Sony was so far ahead, the R3 could not be their flag ship camera. Canon has been behind ever since and sony is smoking them. Every camera they talk about producing is move back and all are behind. Is this the end of Canon. Possibly because Sony has the money to move ahead while canon is telling customers you cannot buy 3rd party RF AF lenses. Bad business and it is going to hurt them. I wish I would have invested in Sony lenses instead of Canon.
As usual, Canon is dropping the ball with that 200-500mm lens, everybody and their momma knows this lens should be a 200-600mm. All Canon had to do was look at how popular the 200-600mm lens is with Sony shooters or the new Nikon 180-600mm is with Nikon shooters. Canon just can't help themselves, they have to constantly short change us someway, somehow...SMDH

Very underwhealming firmware for us Nikon users. At this point I'll be selling z9 for whatever comes with 4k240p video as a bird videographer that's the only thing I want/need 🥴

The same phone is used to listen to Matt Granger, Nikon Europe, for the same Z9 firmware update 5.0 videos today itself. I have not asked you to poke your finger to advise me. Sounds fine on my phone. I don’t even have volume at 50% at it’s plenty loud.

@@jan_wegener There’s a TH-cam pre-roll, a TH-cam midroll, a promotion for your editing presets, and a 3-minute sponsor for backpacks, so it isn’t just TH-cam’s own ads. I get it, it’s hard to make a living on TH-cam, but I also get why this other person is annoyed
Edit: I just scrolled back to see how long the editing preset segment was and got another TH-cam ad. I have to watch an ad to watch another ad!

@@erikwahlgren7309well mine is the RF one that ha dessen orally the adapater on it. It’s a tight fit, but that allows it to stay carry on size
