  • The newest reproduction vintage sewing patterns for fall 2023, are ones no one asked for. Sewing patterns from the 1980's and 1990's are being reproduced, but NOT the ones you would think!
Let me know if there are any particular ones you want me to do another "Vintage vs. Reproduction" on in the comments!

The vogue 1968 evening gown did indeed have a flat train. That's the pattern my mother used for her wedding dress !

I sewed that 80s blouse pattern and I actually love it! It’s not as weird 80s when you use great fabric and modern styling… it’s cute!

TBH, 80s blouses are still really nice with modern fabric and a few adjustments. They're designed to be comfortably loose and drapey while still giving a nice shape. One of my most favorite patterns is a 1982 Butterick blouse with the shoulders taken in slightly and the tie-front collar swapped for a collar off a late 70s pattern.

It would almost be reasonable if they would release them in a larger size range. If they are going to remake the pattern anyway, it would makes sense to me to carry larger than what it came in originally, or like you say, you might as well buy it resale and actually authentic. I would be tempted by a couple of the 70s ones if they came in my size.

I literally just bought 3 shakets from Maurice's. They're very popular. I also prefer the pleated pants from the 90's. A lot of the thrifters I know buy those. I also can see those 80's blouses being sought after. That doleman high neckline is fashionable right now. I think that you have to imagine them all in modern, contemporary fabrics and patterns. Although I liked the rayon material of the old pleated slacks I owned in the 90s.
Watching this video clinched in my mind how much I do not want to sew more than a repair seam or tear. I'm grateful and full of respect for the folks out there who do, and I will pay handsomely for their work.

I literally have at least three 90s blazer patterns and even more front pleated pants in my stash because they came in $3 bags of patterns at Goodwill mixed in with one I actually wanted. I'm sure if someone actually wants size 18 blazer patterns from the 90s, someone out there is willing to donate it just to get it out of their stash. 😂

I think it's interesting that you're excited about a gathered circle skirt attached to a strapless princess bodice that looks like something anyone who can sew could generate on their own from basic blocks, but not only blazé about a blazer that would be very difficult to pattern on one's own, but actively disparaging based on your experience. I totally believe you when you say that endless permutations on fitted bodices and gathered or pleated circle skirts sell better than patterns for items with more steps, pieces, and complex assembly, but I still find it fascinating. There's such a huge gulf between the European diaspora sewing community and the rest of the sewing community when it comes to using commercial patterns vs. making one's own.

I may the odd person out, but I've had better luck getting the reproduction patterns to fit me than vintage (full disclosure; I've never had both an original and reproduction of the same pattern so not a true apple to apple comparison) I can't afford the prices the companies charge for patterns nowadays, and even eBay is out of my budget. My local thrift store charges a quarter for sewing patterns, and while it takes some time, I have had luck finding ones I've really liked.

  • @EdieBird
    @EdieBird 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I saw a vintage 80s blouse yesterday that I would sew the hell out of if I could find a pattern like it. (it was many, many sizes too small, and even too small for the quite petite shop owner) GIANT shoulder pads in a fitted bodice with a peplum, which was hip length in back with long tails in front, long sleeves, pointed collar, long, not-too billowy sleeves, in a lush metallic gold silky fabric. It had major soap-opera-heroine-in-the-80s vibes.
And the companies give us just a loose boxy blouse. Give me the INTERESTING shapes and the parts that shouldn't go together but somehow do form a cohesive piece!

I crack up at " Shacket " trend, they are just what we have called shirt jackets since I was a kid, I'm 60 now. I have always had long sleeve somewhat heavier weight shirts that could be worn as shirt by itself or over another shirt as shirt jackets. Nothing new here it's a classic with a new name, personally I think shirt jacket is a more accurate and clearer description than Shacket. Obviously I'm not getting paid to come up with Fad marketing, or I'm old enough to know what it's been called for decades.😊

I like what the nightgowns/home coat from the 70's looked like: the long versions made the legs look long up to there. Also the Simplicity 9739 wrap dresses for misses. Vogue 1963 looks very elegant: quite perfect for a wedding dress, just like the other dresses, if made in the right fabric.
Also, the blonde model wearing the black "fancy pillow case" dress has an impressive hairstyle. And i like that dress version.
In any case, we don't need patterns for clothes that look ridiculous to us now, like those 90s pleated pants... or men's overalls for leisure wearing.

I think pattern preferences depend on a person's lifestyle. I rarely wear or own a dress. I live on a sailboat and have had to sneak of my boat and up the dock so people who know me as the boat woman wouldn't laugh at me. When I lived in Hawaii I wore beautiful dresses most of the time. Here in the PNW it's usually jeans, pants, shorts, sweatshirts, flannel shirts, camp shirts, etc. dressy blouses, scarfs for more professional look. I generally dress in more of a classic look rather than trendy.

Unless a person is a skin and bones hanger pleated pants just make us look fatter than we are. 80' blazers with shoulder pads made me look like linebacker, I have broad shoulders. A lot of 80's fashion should stay in the 80's. I do keep an eye out for my favorite camp shirt pattern from late 70's, think it was a Butterick they fitted me well then. Basic shirt with a yoke, pleat in middle of back, set in collar, set in sleeves and a shirt tail hem.
I find the new patterns are short cutted, no yokes, set in collar or set in sleeves. They look okay on a hanger but do nothing for real body.

I wonder if Vogue vintage-styles are more accurate since they are called "reissue" rather than "reproduction" patterns. That V1964 may have been resurrected because so many of us have a bit of avoirdupois around the waist. I can think of a lot of gals who could use that tuck above the waist. I would be a candidate to buy V1966 as I always want shirt/jackets with all the pattern pieces for collar band and button plackets.

There is one vintage 80's/90's 'mom blazer' pattern I purchased on Etsy and then tried to upsize to plus because I remember when I made it from new that it wasn't very business-y, felt youthful on (well, when i WAS youthful haha) and was super easy to sew. Now why can't they reproduce that and recreate it in a plus size? Hmm? Hmm? (Insert Lucy Van Pelt voice here) And sorry that in the hell-that-is-my-vintage-pattern-cabinet I can't find the actual pattern to tell you the number. (Edit: just had to look at my Etsy history! Butterick Sew & Sew 3814!) But I did find two patterns I wish they'd create in larger sizes! Simplicity 9074 (groovy robe), and Easy McCalls 8565 the super-smart designed cap sleeved top. I sewed the hell outta that one when I was young, so easy! Bought the vintage in the largest size but still need to draft it larger. PS...would it be too nit picky to ask you to give us a second or two longer on your cute insert items? They go by so fast that I have to stop, rewind you, slow the playback and then pause to read the inserts. Apparently, my Evelyn Woodhead Speed Readin' Comprenshun (que up Cheech and Chong Los Cochinos) is failing. Thank you for the very fun video despite my slowness. Hugs from this vintage lady.

Simplicity pattern 4019 - This is a pattern worth re issuing. The original was one that had the tissue pattern with only holes and no printing to show darts, etc. I don't know how anyone used them. Anyway, this is an absolutely beautiful dress with "criss-cross" pockets and a FRONT zipper!

Do you REALLY need a pattern to do an oversized bag with a few cutouts, and "maybe" a turtleneck or other finish. I am far from a professional sewist and I can do that! Just NO!!! (I do hope you got at least a little chuckle out of my little written tirade!) Have a blessed day, folks!

I just think it's funny they are marketing these as "90's". These blazers and pleated tapered pants, are mid to late 80's. Not 90's. I know, because I was in high school in the late 80, in college in the early 90's, the height of my young lady fashion era. We were getting into flat front pants in the early 90's. Grunge was in.

See how the one girl looks like Farrah and the other K? The Laura Ashley dress at 3:50 - what is up with that bodice? The busy print kind of disguises it, but it's pulling like CRAZY under the bust. Is it the fault of the pattern, the sewist, or does it just not fit the model?
Yes, more fun 1930's patterns, please! It's my favourite fashion decade and the originals are expensive and/or rare! ...and the one they have is something I already patterned myself. AUGH.
