Love this channel. I am the sole caretaker of my 85 yr old husband. My "me time" is 7 to 9 am and you are my go to now with my coffee.. Starting a marathon of all your podcast. It's so much fun to recognize patterns I have sewn (60s and 70s) and my mom had sewn (40s and 50S).
@@StephanieCanada if I’m not mistaken I believe that at one point she says that she has sitting dresses and standing dresses lol and I fully love that.
Love that show! Love your channel! Will never make these. . . apple shape body. . . not great for these style dresses. However, it makes my inner Barbie lover very happy (I was born in 1958).
If you are looking for a paneled/gored circle skirt to get that perfect pattern match stripe look, I highly recommend Charm Patterns Stanwyck skirt. I made it with a white and blue stripe and didn't even have to make an effort to get the stripes to meet.
Thank you. I have never heard of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I don't watch TV. However, I do love most of the garments you showed me. None of them would fit me (or look right on me) at my age. But, I do enjoy remembering how beautiful women's garments were when I was young.
I’m sending a little love as a thank you for inspiring me to crank my sewing machine back up after 7 years of chaos after my fourth kid was born (a surprise!) I’ve already made a couple of dresses, skirts, and a top and I’m in sewing heaven re-learning how to ease a sleeve and install a zipper (properly, for once in my life 😂). I think it was the Walkaway repro video that did it. So - Thank you from a fellow red-headed Orlandoan! ❤️
I have a beautiful Dorothy dress in my closet. I made it for my daughter years ago . It fits me! I don’t know how I managed to make that dress!! I enjoy watching your videos Stephanie. Thank you. You look gorgeous and that green colored top compliments your red hair so well.
Thanks for going through all the effort to find the different patterns to make up the looks! Personally, I’d probably draft a pattern but most people wouldn’t want to do that.
Whilst I have never seen the series (obviously will have to binge watch it now) I have seen numerous iterations of the playsuit/open skirt/shorts/blouse combo sewing patterns. Never been keen but having seen them on an actual human they look gorgeous!
This was such a fantastic video! RIP my vintage pattern WIPs because I want to make so many of these. I also appreciate not having to make the dresses halters for those of us who may prefer halter-adjacent styling.
Stephanie this video is genius! Your knowledge of vintage sewing patterns is second to none. Plus such a fun, upbeat presentation and you look fabulous. I will be watching this over and again 💗💐
Not gonna lie, a little sad there was no dupe for Abe's Catskills romper😂 i might have been able to talk my husband into actually wearing one, i did get him to switch to vintage sean connery bond style shorty shorts for swimming and he loved it, so maybe he'd give the romper a chance too😂
I saw a few dresses with a skirt style that stood out to me, its like a faux version of the pencil skirt peekaboo with the full skirt on top. Rose is wearing one in the scene where shes hypnotized, but i saw it on at least one of midge's dresses too. Id love to find a pattern with that style, although i think i know how its done
I have to say having made the Butterick 6018 reproduction several times, it actually makes a beautiful dress, and it fits really well (except length, I’m 5’2” and I have to shorten it a foot to make it a more flattering length on me other wise it goes to my ankles and looks really weird) so please don’t knock that pattern I think you’d be surprised how well it actually works.
New here, but sympathizing with the hand brace situation! I have had one hand issue in 2022, needed physio and brace. Took 11 months to get better In 11th month, I was trying to spare my just healed L hand, so wrung cloths with R hand extra vigilantly...now dealing with trigger finger for last 6 months. Ugg....getting old is a rotter! I WANT TO SEW AND CUT FABRIC!!!
Ty Stephanie 😊 I haven't seen the show yet but i enjoyed this whole premise. Would love if you did for other popular looks referencing vintage patterns as i really enjoy seeing them! 🩷
Can you help us with Lucille Ball outfits please? I am looking for a day dress idea for a wedding. Goat scream for all of these ideas! Tasha is great but your skill is knowing about vintage fashion patterns. The search is still on for me for a pattern that my mother used in the early 60s, I keep watching and hoping. Birdy
The last one the sailor outfit there is a reproduction of the top it’s simplicity 8645 it is the C one and I think you can alter the triangles to make it longer. I have it.
The whole point of getting a pattern and making your own dresses is to make them fit your body instead of trying to get your body to fit whatever a store is trying to sell you, you don't need to be a particular shape, just get the right pattern
Sorry, but I have to correct you. The pink coat has a shawl collar (or more accurately, shawl lapel), not a rolled collar. A rolled collar is typically used on a dress or blouse without a front closure (though there are exceptions) and stands up a bit. Often, the neck opening is wide, like a boat or bateau neckline. A shawl collar/ lapel is very similar in constructtion to the notched lapel that we're most used to seeing on men's suits.
I haven't seen the show, but that polka dot sheath with the cape detail....the black and white one with roses on? I must know more about that one. How can I make it myself?
Why would her coat be in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History? The Museum of American History is next door has most of the TV memorabilia and the first ladies gowns.
I know you hate recommending repro patterns but B6018 actually isn't too bad, as long as you go by the measurements on the tissue and not the envelope. I have no idea how it compares to the original though!
@trishayamada807: Frequently, fur collars were mounted on other fabric, & made to be removable (for cleaning). Would you like the coat better without fur? A brocade or tapestry fabric over a quilted fabric would also be "dressy". 19:31 CDT, Thursday, 13 July,2023
Hi, i'm new to this channel and vintage fashion, so I'm just wondering what is wrong with reproduction patterns? 😅 i've been worried about not getting the right size vintage patterns so I was thinking of looking into reproduction patterns. Should I not? 😅
🙋🏼♀️I own several repros because a) I’m cheap and can’t pay $20-$30 for a vintage pattern right now (thanks for the $4.99 Vogue sales, Jo-Ann!) and b) I like the ‘50s style in general. I wear the stuff I make, but I do admit it’s tempting to just collect patterns like some people collect Barbies. It doesn’t make as much sense, I think. But it is what it is 😂
Up until the time I retired from working retail, I made and wore reproduction vintage dresses regularly. They were uniformly very flattering and generally fun to buy fabric for. I especially liked the dresses from the 1940's, which, during the War Years, took little yardage but were always comfy and I got many compliments when wearing them.
There is actually a large portion of the sewing community that makes vintage clothes (myself included). So reproductions are how some folks can afford to make them.
You might be surprised where vintage fashions are hiding ... most of them do not look like the pattern art when worn by a real human without girdles and crinolines. I still fit into and wear clothing I purchased in the 1980s and 90s ... since these were classic basics, nobody can even tell how old they are. A circle skirt in a late 1950s color / pattern screams VINTAGE, but the same skirt in white linen looks fresh and very modern. [Must finish the 27 miles of hemming!] Also, some of us get a much better fit with vintage patterns.
@@StephanieCanada I have a friend who teaches costume design at Dalhousie University. It seems that there are basic silhouettes used in time periods and the fabric, decorations and undergarments give it the right look. I wouldn’t be happy wearing a dress with a waist seam since I don’t have a waist.🤷♀️ Buying or sewing clothing from these styles would present a challenge. I enjoy your videos and glad you are back.
Appreciating the crazy amount of effort required to make this compilation of examples and pattern recommendations. I struggle with finding items that I want to make (I know, I'm weird) but this is so inspiring and makes me feel like these outfits are not just ✨movie magic✨ but actual achievable garments. Thank you 🤍
PART TWO PART TWO IMMEDIATELY. Also I agree with the person who said you should do Rose's ensembles!
This was SO GOOD.
Which were you favorite Rose dresses I should spotlight?
Can we take a moment to acknowledge the fact that you did this video on a whim? Because it really shows off your deep knowledge of vintage patterns.

I would love for you to do a video covering some of Rose's outfits in the "Marvelous Ms. Maisel". Her ensembles are also stunning.

The sailor dress would be FAB as a wide legged jumpsuit (reminding me of my mother's hostess pajamas of the early 70s)
Wonderful! A Part 2 would be lovely, please.
The 70s sailer dress was quite the surprise!
What blissful clothes! OMG 😲 Thank you for such a large dollop of fabulousness to start my day! 🙏🥰
Great video, Stephanie!! Her wardrobe is spectacular, I hope the wardrobe person gets an award!!
One of the other fun parts of watching this show was admiring the clothes! You killed it!!! Wonderful job!! ❤❤❤❤❤
I’d love to make the green play suit she’s wearing while playing table tennis in the Catskills.

Is it OK to ask you if you have a certain pattern regarding a 70s top? I am new.
I need to know what lipstick you are wearing
My granma had a green color coat like that but hers was extra fancy and had (sadly) mink fur on the collar. (The pink coat season 1)
Green would’ve been stellar!
