Yo I remember feeling scared when I was nearing the end of the novel and NHS machinations were revealed. I was so sure they were going to say he was villian all along and I could not handle that. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the plot twist. It makes me laugh everytime a character bashes NHS

Like the whole main romance between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji seems really happy, but once you get into the plot it's just depressing as heck. You have no idea how many times I cried lol

No questions, but just to warn you (even though you've almost certainly figured it out by now) there is no recovering from the Yi City Arc. Xue Yang's entire character can be summed up as "can't have nice things."

I don't care how fucked up Xue Yang is, I love him with my entire being. He just has trauma, holds grudges and doesn't know how to express love. I also slightly feel like he doesn't think he deserves a happy life and happy ending and either purposefully or subconciously destroys his chances at happiness.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
like when his actions result in XXC's death and then is completely heartbroken by it and tries for so long to get him back, going as far as trying to get WWX to bring him back but couldn't because XXC's death was a su*c*de and he doesn't want to come back. I also feel like that is a turning point for XY and it sends him further down a negative path. I think he could've managed to hold himself back and have a happy life with XXC and A-Qing like he did for years, imo he was a redeemable character and his downfall was because of self-destructive tendencies. When your childhood is fucked up it affects you for a long time, so maybe him feeling unwanted as a child lead to him feeling unwanted as an adult and that people would leave him. idk tho, it's just a guess

Xue Yang's portrayal in the drama is milder than in the book. It doesn't help that the actor is devilishly handsome as well!! However, i never considered shipping him with Xiao. XY was far too gone to deserve anything good at that point.

Lil Apple's name in Chinese as you said is Xiao Ping Guo which literally translates to Little Apple, and is the name of a really popular Chinese song that came out in 2014. It's a really good song too, you should check it out! The kpop group T-ara did a cover of it, and the Chinese pop group SNH48 did a mashup of it with Psy's Gentleman too that's also really good.

Am I the only one who doesn't like Xue Yang at all? His character is very interesting but I despise what he did to the other three
I don't think you're the only one. I didn't really like him that much either, but I have to say, I did pity him, especially when he tried to bring Xiao Xingchen back as a fierce corpse. Even though he despised him, Xiao Xingchen was the only friend he had ever had, and losing him sent him over the edge. He was a really complex character, and I think that's what people liked about him, not so much his deeds, because I think anyone would agree that he was seriously messed up.
Me: wow I can’t wait until they talk about the yi city arc!!
Also me, the moment yi city is mentioned: wait no I didn’t want to actually remember it, go back-
We all know someone was gonna do this, and today it gonna be me, here's 'i like Xue Yang' the rant comment:
1. It's okay that you hate him, people should respect your opinion but respect ours because some people like him and commenting you hate him will ruin someone's day so if you hate him, keep it to yourself and people who agree with you for less arguments.
2. His past is NOT an excuse it's the cause, people who like Xue Yang just genuinely think that you know instead of blaming the kid, who no one cared for, only wanted sweets, and was very nice, just blame the one who ran over his hand. He wouldn't have gone psycho if SOMEONE just gave him his promised candy. It was either a whole sect and many families die or none at all. I mean like the kid wasn't always psycho and he didn't kill the whole sect because he was petty about his 1 lost finger, the moment his hand was ran over was just his breaking point. He had been suffering from no food, no parents, no one to teach him what's right and what's wrong, no one to care for, and he must've suffered for months because of that lost finger because no doctor would help, the moment his hand was ran over was the moment he realized that there was no light in the world. He wasn't psycho since birth.
3. He's like Qi rong, he just wants someone to care for the REAL him and if he cares for someone he'd be terrible at showing it. Like during those three years at the coffin house he made Xiao Xingchen kill people not for fun but because those people talked bad about Xiao Xingchen (that's not an excuse, it's the thought that counts), he made him kill Song Lan because he and XXC were basically living the perfect life from his perspective and SL would've ruined it (which he did and again, I'm not saying what he did was right, I'm just stating his original intentions), it was literally canon that he was happily cooking for XXC moments after their fight thinking he was tired and was just sleeping, Bro did you see the way he smiled at XXC in the drama, he literally wanted to bring him back, if he had SL as a walking corpse he control why would he be desperate to bring him back even though he KNEW it was impossible? It's also canon that the moment XXC died he realized he was the only person who would ever care for him, and he literally died holding the rotten last piece of candy XXC gave him.
4. Analogy: Here's a person who lit fire in the forest unintentionally but it was still his fault, he has to put water in it, instead he doesn't, he puts gasoline instead thinking it would calm it down, it doesn't and the fire burns the entire forest. Small fire = angry kid xue yang, Dumb person = that clan leader, water = giving him candy, gasoline = running him over intentionally, burning the entire forest = killing his entire sect.
5. Let's compare him to Xie Lian, if Xie Lian really did become the next "White no face" and kill millions would you still be like "his past doesn't excuse his actions" or are you biased towards him because he's the protagonist and you actually saw through his eyes. You will say "but he suffered more and all thats happened to xue yang was a lost finger" well THAT'S not an excuse because Xue Yang was younger which means his mind is easily manipulated he may have suffered less but what he experienced wasn't just a lost finger. I'll repeat, 1. He has no parents which meant not a single warmth or care, 2. Nobody, not a single soul helped him because if someone did show him an act of kindness they would definitely be memorable, 3. That was one lost finger but the entire hand was ran over and remember he's a child with no money which means he suffered with a broken hand for months and that broken hand made him go psychotic (like again we should blame him for going psycho instead of the man who could've just gave him at least 1 piece of candy and you know... Stop the carriage when the child was in the way). Xie Lian was lucky, there was someone who showed him kindness that street performer, that water vendor, Hua Cheng but Xue Yang wasn't so lucky to find a person who was actually good. Also if Xie Lian really did become the white no face he would slaughter dozens of kingdoms and kill more people than xue yang ever would.
6. Okay, someone might say "How was the Sect leader supposed to know the kid would go psycho" like excuse me, you don't have to know that a kid will go psycho to not run him over with your carriage, it's just basic human decency.
7. Lastly, can we just talk about his talent?! Like seriously, he is homeless and has no master yet he manages to become the second greatest Demonic cultivator with only Wei Wuxian above him? Just wow.
(P. S. This comment's intention isn't "YOU HAVE TO LIKE XUE YANG OR ELSE" it's just an explanation on why most people like him)

hey, I suggest you to watch the donghua first, then the live action one (cuz obviously the donghua isn't finish yet but I think it's fun to get to know about them a little, then you kinda understand the half of it, but you don't get the full story line, so you'll excited to watch and finish the drama version) after that you could read the novel to know how much they've changed the story line there (so you won't feel bored because all of the version are somewhat different, they all have their own way to portrait the main characters) and yeah, last but not least you could read the manhua version, That's how I got to know MDZS and will forever be a fandom :")
the reason to read the manhua after the novel is bcs there aren't many differences and you can finally see your imagination all those times you read the novel :> every day is every day

I wish I had followed this order when I got into MDZS. I started with the manhua, then went to the donghua, then went to the drama, then back to the manhua, then I went to the novel, then back to the drama, then back to the donghua. Once you've read the novel, it's hard to watch the drama since they really changed things around so much. I got so frustrated with how they changed things. The novel got famous for a reason. If something's not broke, don't fix it. Well, that's how I feel about it anyway.
