I suppose promises are more important than human lives is it? Should've just let little A-yuan, the wen siblings, granny and the wens die, huh? It was a promise made by a weary teen to soothe another teen.Idk why the fandom fixates on it. It's not wwx's fault JC decided to throw away his morals and betray the people who saved his life. Idk what tragic ending he got bcz he seems to be pretty fine( compared to Jgy and xy) in canon.

And yes I know that JC was wrong and does not think in Wens ppl suffering or they lives but for him (and in the ancient china culture) family was first and their promise was more important than any stranger's life.
That is why WWX words was like "im sorry I didn't keep my promise but not sorry I wanted to pretect them so I did it" at least to me. And I know JC also knows WWX was right and that is why he hands over Chenquing to him and helps in the final battle (and at that moment he actually knew his golden core was WWX's)

@@patriciaespuheque1514 Except that wwx was never really family to JC. From the moment he's entered, JC threatens him with dogs, He's constantly singled out for punishment and whipped by zidian for something as stupid as not wearing a shirt on a hot summer day ( unfortunately Jc and the disciples encourage this behaviour by claiming that he protects them from danger). He has ' scars of old and new on his back' and has his dead parents insulted in front of him. JC never calls him 'brother' or even ' shixiong' and only calls him wwx. After getting whipped and nearly having his hand cut off by madam yu and getting ordered that he should protect JC even if he dies, he gets choked by her son and sacrifices his core for jc. It always bothered me how jgy got a very good social position for killing wen Ruohan, while wwx who practically won like 80% of the war gets NOTHING. JC could've established sworn brotherhood with him but he did'nt. When JYL died saving wwx, instead of keeping wwx close , JC decides to spit on her face by leading a seige against him. This is NOT how u treat family.
And even if it did, is wwx not allowed to have a life other than being jc's servant? Let me ask you, If JFM had forced WC to stay with him instead of marrying the woman he loved, is that in any way right?? No. JC decided to do the exact opposite of his father. Do u know why JC fixates on this promise?
WWX made this promise minutes before madam yu shouted that wwx will always be more powerful than jc and jc can never be higher than wwx.
WWX said that he will be subordinate ( aka servant) to JC just like his father( but WC left the Jiang sect to marry his mom so wwx is'nt breaking any rules by protecting the wens).
The thing is, this promise is the only way JC can ensure that WWX will always be under his control and beneath him.

@@patriciaespuheque1514 i do think Jc cares for wwx, only that this care is extremely conditional and possessive. The moment wwx puts a toe out of line, JC punishes him and even leads a seige against him and innocent people who he knew consisted of a child and old people. The problem is JC will not have WWX as anything but a subordinate. The time when he realises that he was the one in wrong, it's just way too late. JC had already killed the Wens and other innocent people who had *reminded* him of wwx. And he really didn't get the consequences for his actions either.

@kkaradin yup. As much as i like the warm of jiang fengmian and the fierce of yu ziyuan, the one who has big responsibility that makes jc feel inferiority is them. When suddenly your father brought someone, make him share his thing to the other, release your pet, and paid more attention (albeit maybe unintended), to have a bitter and jealous feeling is reasonable. This apply to jzy too. How can she's not furious and jealous when his husband brought his lost love son to the house without saying anything to her. The need to prove that her son (and herself) is better than the son from his lost love is reasonable but at the same time it's put more weight to jc because he too want to prove himself. If only jfm talk and convince his family first before brought wwx to lotus pier, if only yzy choose her words better when talking to jc (blaming him that he can't win to wwx) and realize wwx is not the wrong in here (because the conflict is between jfm-yzy-cangse sanren not their kids), maybe the conection between jc and wwx will not this severe

Aghhhh... what gets me so riled up is its not Jiang Chengs fault or Wei Wuxians fault.
They were kids. They should have never been pitted against one another or compared to one another.
Jiang Cheng is very good. He's a pretty darn good fighter and cultivator. The problem is that Wei Ying just happened to be a prodigy.
It's not fair that they were dragged into the parents shit. Or basically... into any of the grownups shit.
These kids should have been able to grow up together. Train together. Basically make their own way without being compared to one another.
Jiang Fengmian had given Jiang Cheng any bit of attention and praise. If Madam Wu had let go of her petty jealousy of a dead woman, who most likely did not have an affair with her husband, and stopped comparing the two whenever she could They would have been fine.
Uggghhhhhhh sorry just.. another case where if people had just talked so much heartbreak could have been avoided.

it's not as close as jiang cheng or a'cheng, but not as formal as jiang-gongzi or jiang-zongzhu, etc. i think there is one scene when nie huaisang called him wanyin-xiong at the cloud recesses. especially after wei wuxian's death, no one is really in that place to call him by his courtesy name without being disrespectful (like his former classmates). and wei wuxian still calls him by his birth name after his rebirth (unless it's a particularly impactful scene)

I believe when his parents gave him the name, they’re with positive intentions.however same Chinese words can represent different meaning. Actually courtesy names (the 2nd name) can be chosen by oneself aswell once you come of age. The reason why he's not been called that name much is because usually friends or acquaintances of his generation would use it, and since he doesn't have any close friends no one is seen using it. Instead they call him the more polite but distant title of Sect Leader Jiang. Infact to use the birth name if you're not his elder or a close relative would be very rude. WWX uses "Jiang Cheng" because he's used to it and grew up with him. Lan zhan uses "Jiang Wan Yin" once at the end as a way to drop formality and convey seriousness (like I'm not being nice anymore) but he would not go as far as to use jiang Cheng since that would be hella rude and he ain't that type of guy. It's also why it riled lan zhan up so much when WWX calls him "lan zhan" when they were younger since it's openly quite informal, even his older brother calls him wangji and Lans are super formal and respectful.
In ancient chinese times, most people had 2 names : a birth name and then a courtesy name either chosen by themselves or given by an elder/relative once you reach puberty. Prominent people had a title aswell. It also depended how close you were with the person on what you called them.
    Formality order goes like this:
    -Pet names/ nicknames.
E.g A-cheng, A-ling, mian mian. Informal and your close with them. Used in family settings and very close friends
    - birth name
E.g jiang Cheng, wei ying, lan zhan. Also informal and close family and friends/elders.
    - courtesy names
E.g wei wu xian, lan wangji , jiang Wang Yin.- formal/friend/ acquaintances. if you ain't their bestie you'd call them this.
    - titles
E.g Ze Wu Jun, Han Guang Jun, Sect leader Jiang/Nie/Jin, Yiling patriarch. Etc
Utmost formality and respect. All juniors or subordinates would refer you like this otherwise its a bit of a slap in the face.
In Asian cultures how you refer to someone is quite important and that's reflected in honorifics today, infact ommiting that formality can be considered rude by some people.
Although people not using jiang Wang Yin or jiang Cheng doesn't really have much to do with symbolism or story telling it's really interesting to see how people interact and their relationships just by the way they refer to each other.
Some examples that I found super interesting :
    - jiang cheng is the only friend of wwx to call him Wei Wu Xian and not wei xiong or wei ying even though they grew up together. Infront of people he tries to maintain an air of formality even tho they acted like brothers probably because he is the main family and wwx is a subordinate and he'd like to keep it that way. He would've called him wei ying when they were kids but somewhere along the way he would've made the change.
    - Wu(none/ no) Xian (envy). it is my head Canon that wwx choose his own courtesy name to tell the world he is not jealous of anyone, that he is his own unique person and carefree.
    - WWX calls alot of people by their birth names cause he's that kind of easy going, easy to befriend, easy to insult kind of guy.
    - lan zhan is the only person that always calls wwx "wei ying", at first as retaliation for calling him lan zhan or disrespect for his temperament but then later it becomes a sign of closeness and affection.
    - lan zhan calls his own brother Xiong Zhan which is a SUPER formal way to call an elder brother of high social standing. Which shows how significant it is that lan zhan calls wei ying by his birthname. But xichen calls his younger brother by his courtesy name wangji, to show he is one step less formal and more friendly but still respects his formailty.
    - jiang cheng calls jin ling " A-Ling" in the Q series, even though he's strict with jin ling, he only calls him jin ling infront of other people and calls him A-ling when they're alone.
    - xichen calls everyone he's friends with one step less formal name. Like A-yao (jin guangjyao), A-Ling (jin ling), wangji (LWJ) Da Ge (big bro for mingjue). even when most would be calling wwx "yiling patriarch", he calls him "Childe wei" which is less ominous and distant yet still respectful. Shows he's one big step friendlier than his younger brother. But he maintains "sect leader jiang" since they are not close.
    - at the start of the of the series the general public refers to WWX as Wei Wu Xian or Yiling patriarch( a title which is more infamous rather than respectful) but by the end of the series, they are all calling him Childe wei or Mr wei as if to forget about the whole Yiling thing and sweep it under the rug. Now THIS one is symbolic
    - Jiang Feng Mian calls Madam Yu, "Sang Niang", now I don't know what it means but it is a pet name and nobody but him uses it. Which signifies that once upon a time they WERE close and he only drops the full " YU ZI YUAN" when they fight.
    - Wwx family members call him " A-Xian" EXCEPT for Madam Yu, she never saw him as her own and opts for wei ying or wei wu xian infront of others.
    - the Lan sect and other sect juniors always called wwx "senior wei". They were always on his side and never disrespectful like the general public that vilified him.
Sorry BIG tangent, but English subs always tend to drop the multiple names or honorifics for simplicity and help western audiences relate better. But what we lose is a world of relationships and characterisations all conveyed with one word and the way they address each other.

I understood Jiang WanYin 冮 晚吟 as river words spoken too late. wan can mean not just night but, in literary Chinese, also later, like later in life. yin can mean not just recite, in but also to make a sound (generally a loud soft loud soft sound, like groaning, or moaning cicadas or, according to the dictionary, squealing monkeys apparently). So I think wanyin mean “late words” or “words that come too late”. This fits with his character arc. In the books, he lead the first siege of burial mounds and the Jiang and the Jin were the biggest and most important forces. It is mentioned early in the book, in the Dafan mountain arc, that the siege would not have succeeded were it not for Jiang Cheng knowing Wei WuXian’s weaknesses. To plot to charge up with two armed armies of cultivators that killed everyone except an hidden boy, is definitely premeditated murder of not just Wei WuXian but also of the Wen sect refugees that Wei WuXian was trying to protect, whom Jiang Cheng knew to be innocent, old, weak, infirm or a child because he actually visited burial mounds and told Wei WuXian not to be a hero in trying to protect the Wens. (Tangent: I still don’t understand why when Wei WuXian told JC to just tell the rest of the cultivation world that they are broken up, why JC also added that WWX is now an enemy of the cultivation world). Anyways, imagine JC’s absolute horror and guilt when he realizes that he pushed away (*killed) the only person left who was willing to (and did) give up everything for him and his benefit. It’s also sad because at the end of the story, no one else is left who can rightfully call him Jiang Cheng - only Wei WuXian and Jiang Cheng drove him away. It’s so gut-wrenching. 😭 😭

I always wonder why Lan Zhan it's the only one who calls him Jiang Wanyin and at first I thought it was because of Lan Zhan education, you know very well behave and following the etiquette, but now I think it was to mess with him in a quite polite way like: I'm not gonna call you Lider Jiang, Mr Jiang or Jiang Cheng, I will call you by your mess up name

At the end of the second season, as it is ending and Wen Ning reveals what happened to Wei Wuxian's golden core and Jiang Cheng is trying to fight him on the dock - Lan Zhan calls Jiang Cheng by his second name and hits when with his spirit power. It's right as they are getting in the boat to leave; Jiang Cheng comes racing after them to continue the fight and Lan Wangi turns an yells his 2nd name in his face and blast his crown off. The scene just reminded him of who he truly is and that he would never be better than Wei Ying. Now, having the name break down oh my ...this child is really pathetic pitiful. Check it out!!!

The one thing I wanted to see in the novel is wei ying and jiang cheng properly reconciling or at least have a more proper talk to finally let go of all those feelings especially for jiang cheng because after all those years he really had no one beside him. He had to raise jin ling all by himself while rebuilding his clan. If I were in his shoes I would've killed myself already from the stress and pressure. Sure, wei ying and jiang cheng's relationship will not be the same as it was before but MXTX could've at least given them a proper closure. In the end, wei ying has lan zhan who is literally his biggest support in his life, his shoulder to cry on, his soulmate, etc. But jiang cheng literally has no one to be by his side, his support, his shoulder to cry on. He may have jin ling, but what would a teen like him know about jiang cheng's complex feelings after all that shit.

Oof! I wonder if the absence of anyone saying Jiang Wanyin is a nod to that he really doesn't have any of those casual peer relationships with others? Like, as a teen or as the clan leader later on, nobody was familiar enough with him to justify its use. HE'S A LONELY BOY

This is so interesting!!! (and sad 😥)
I find it so nice that his name comes from a poem! And I always love to see the differences between portuguese (my language), english and chinese/mandarin (witch I don't speak, but really want to learn). You can see, just by how they are written a whole world of difference in culture. Like, if I were to write a poem with a single line in portuguese I doubt it would even be considered as such.
I had seen (in fanfics, I think?) that Wanyin would be something like "to chant the night", but it was taken in a sort of romantic way, and definitely did not know the sad part...
As far as I remember, in canon, everyone who calls him Wanyin does so in an insulting way (at least, I think??), either the older sect leaders when he is young and already a sect leader on his own, or Lan Wangji, because of the grudge he holds against him, especially considering LWJ should be calling him Sect Leader Jiang/Sandu Shengshou considering their "society levels".

Now it makes a bit more sense. And in every novel there are two moments when WY fights with JC and calls him Jiang WanYin

I love jiang cheng so much, I feel so sorry for him, but it‘s so hard to love him too, because he has so much anger and pain inside him, especially for wei wuxian and he could never get over it and I think his behaviour towards wwx is not fair… he could never conclude with all this pain and his past but wwx did everything for him and kept his promise to protect him even after death (golden core)… what i‘m trying to say is, that wwx would probably forgive jc if he would just get over his pride and also acknowledge his own mistakes and apologies to him… but this is never gonna happen… and that‘s why I love him but also dislike him for his behaviour towards wwx… because they both had heavy losses and jiang cheng is the one of them who couldn‘t get over all…wwx could move on, he didn‘t 🥲 it hurts so much I could cry again and his name is just as tragic…🥲🥲

So "his name scored the highest out of everyone". You could think of that like him having the most POTENTIAL. But his second name explains why he never reached that potential
[SPOILERS] Jin Yao even tells him (I'm paraphrasing, and it wasn't an official translation I read it off of, so take it with a grain of salt) "You flatter me. My little whispers didn't have the power to turn you against your brother, and I'm not the only one who wanted that outcome. If you and your brother had stood united, NO ONE would have dared whisper. But we all saw the rift... your jealousy and resentment, your brother's arrogance and secrecy... the two of you were responsible for that. The difference between you and your brother is that he learned. He acknowleged his vices, he accepted responsibility for his mistakes, and he grew in oreder to make amends. My little whispers, unfortunately, don't work on him anymore. But you? You're still the same, petty, grieving little boy that lashed out, drew his sword, and ran his own brother through."

But I couldn't find anything close to this text in the 3 independent translations I have (Er non-official, non-English non-official and non-English official). Is my guess correct that this the JGY and JC scene in the Temple after JC hits JGY sore spot related to JGY's mother?
