He said the core issue with ads in beginning of the speech. If click through rate is 0.44%, average person needs to watch 227 ads to find 1 relevant one. Ads somehow became way less relevant despite companies now knowing everything about you. This entire system is broken, clearly annoying for users, and very likely unprofitable for companies purchasing ads.
Ads are noise. It doesn't matter if ad is relevant to me because even if it is and even if my ad block doesnt block it I would scroll past it out of habit.
hmmm yes im sure the 500 billion dollar industry is just throwing away money and totally isn't insanely fucking profitable. mate, it's not about you clicking and buying, it's about manipulating you into choosing their product when you go to the store or otherwise want to buy. They're paying to imprint a memory of their brand on you.
Yeah i'm with nicholas on that, .44 is for stuff in very niche areas and it's considered a super click rate. Just consider that you probably get 140 ads in 6 hours and you rarely ever buy stuff from ads.
I don't think they really know all that much. It's talked about that way, and yeah, they have massive amounts of data, but how accurate is that? I use Facebook a lot, and they have this ability to see how your interests have been categorized. They had a long list of interests logged in my account details, and out of curiosity I tried to estimate how much they really know. Estimated about 25% was in the category "I don't know if I like it or not, because I don't know what it is". Then about 25% in the category "I hate this". Again 25% in the category "I'm indifferent or it's ok". Only about 25% were true interests of mine. I guess this perfectly explains why I get ads like for a christian dating app, when I'm an atheist who has been married for over 20 years.

They succeeded in advertising for decades before the internet and data mining. The advertisers were so successful they were able to sponsor shows on radio and tv and even have naming rights for the shows. So if data mining went away tomorrow and privacy advocates won, advertising would survive and thrive with no more data than you could get by word of mouth with no electronics at all.
Adblock isn't just a QoL issue. It's a security/safety issue. Until ad companies step up and offer compensation for any and all damage that their malicious ads cause, then the adblock stays on.
I don't think the average person doesn't have adblock. Yep, just checked it: about 42.7 % of users have adblock. Are you telling me that a person not using it would see about 10.000 ads?
That number appears to be one of those easily quotable myths. There's an article on it from the Drum, though it's largely inconclusive; the main indication is just that the number was made up rhetoric, as far as it can be traced. More telling is the part where the advertising agency representatives don't want to give a real number. Remember, they're selling the ads, not whatever the ads are for. Also notable, that article remarked on an ad every 3 minutes as being a frightening, overblown and scary proposition. Cable TV, Tiktok and TH-cam easily surpass that. 😮
It's official. Wanting privacy, wanting to not be robbed, and not supporting child abuser makes you an extremist. Extremist has now become one of the kindest and most respectable titles you can work to achieve.

I'm extremely annoyed by ads. So i suppose i'm an extremist.. So many websites are almost unusable because of them, local news sites especially. 45% of my screen gets covered by ads while i attempt to read an article, and then theres an autoplaying ad video every 6 lines of text that i often end up clicking by accident, half way through i realise that this whole article was just clickbait.
It's even more infuriating if you're reading on a phone on 4g and have a net quota and the fucking video loads on 720p with the highest bitrate available, that's almost r*pe.
I won't even look at news sites anymore because of it. They are the worst. How are you supposed to read an article while the text is constantly jumping up and down the page because of ads loading?
A big cheese of the ad industry having a meltdown like this is absolutely brilliant. Prelude to total implosion. However, having looked around a bit, a lot of the digital ad industry pushed back, or condemned his remarks, or simply distanced themselves from him. So sadly, it seems unlikely that this man will drag the industry with him on his descent into madness.
Of course they'd push back. They don't want to start an all out battle that may end up with new regulations in the online ad space. It's because the ones of us who just block their stuff and carry on with our day that they can get to make money from people pushing malware and scams into old, less tech-savvy, people's computers with no consequence. If we were not allowed to block them, the government may want to actually scrutinize the content, while nowadays they hide behind "install bl-cker for security" so it's your fault when you get scammed.
I am an extremist too! Extremely unwilling to be subjected poorly regulated ads , sideloading malware, or worse, the crap ads for things i dont want made by these people.
Advertisers are literally just trying to make their own jobs relevant. They shove so much advertising down and rely on the law of averages to show "hey look at how much attention we brought" without ever showing return on investment or how much revenue they actually generate vs how much they actually cost. Yeah, I love paying for a service, being bombarded by ads, tracked, profiles built on my without my consent, and information being sold to anyone with some money, regardless of their intent.
Being an extremist never felt so much more simple than coming to a closed convention to only hear gaslighting wrapped in political speech style. But most of all, it never felt so right in comparison.
In germany, the definition of an extremist calls for the person to condemn or otherwise move against the constitution, right to privacy or rather right to not have my human dignity challenged by the greed of others is well within my rights, making these who call out and condemn my usage of adblock the extremist here in germany.
Ads were regulated on the TV to not be allowed to exceed some decible threshold, _because_ ads then would maliciously make their volume twice as loud as the show you were watching, _because_ people would get up and walk away during commercials, _because_ people *don't want to be advertised to.* Ads on the internet need to hindered and regulated, they are out of control. Actively preventing you from doing the thing you are trying to do should be a digital crime.
Ah yes, moments like this when getting called an extremist actually makes me want munch on popcorn even harder, as I enjoy the drama and tantrum of my acuser as they roll themselves on the ground, scream and yell, whilst I mostly silently enjoy teh show of someone making a fool out of themselves!
Among ALL the ads I have seen in my life, TWICE i had been actually interested in the product. And that with the "targeted" settings enabled. More often than not, ads try to sell me stuff that i just bought and don't need anymore, but otherwise they are even more useless. And when i disable targeting they still somehow know what i bought recently which is just creepy.
My dad runs a advertising agency ironically so I know some of the terms they use, when they say "digital" they almost always mean digital marketing not as in digital as in computers etc.
Nothing is more hilarious to me than a conference of advertisers getting their own ad techniques used on them by someone giving a speech… if only they weren’t so stupid as to fight us all because of it
There was once a time when advertising was used to help support the free and open internet. Today content is used to push advertising. Big ad companies have purchased a lot of mainstream websites, or they've created websites like BuzzFeed. They use clickbait articles to push ads. When less than 10% of my screen is content and most of it is advertising and it's full motion video, then you realize the content actually was not really any content. It was just there to get you to click through. That's the problem. They want the max headroom world where having an off switch on a TV was considered illegal.....
@@fss1704 yeah. It's disgusting for multiple reasons. They're going to be pushing advertising to people who can't afford a $500 TV. Web searches have been made far less usable by floods of computer generated content to get you to see ads. Try searching for food recipes. You'll come across hundreds of sites rambling on many things only tangentially related to a recipe for a few pages worth of text before you actually come across the ingredients so that you have to scroll past more ads.
The online ad industry destroyed itself with greed. Likely 99.99999% of on like ads are effectively trying to cheat people out of money, mislead, or scam them. Even when they are unimpeded in their tracking, they still show bad ads. For example, if I am looking for 140mm fans with higher RPMs and static pressure to replace the fans on my NH-D15 heatsink, then show me ads for fans that offer more airflow and static pressure than the stock fans. I have tried disabling all ad blocking and all privacy and even with insane amount of tracking, (tons of CPU time spent on tracking scripts), none of the ads had anything to do with 140mm fans. Instead much of it was for scam products and overpriced junk from shady sites offering the junk at higher prices than amazon and Newegg. Aside from that, there is no accountability for ad networks, thus there is no motivation for them to deal with scammers and malvertising. The people in my neighborhood who used to constantly get their systems infected, stopped having those issues when ads were blocked on all of their browsers. If you look at sites like bleeping computer, you will see reports covering boilerplate no apologies from a wide range of major sites when they get caught serving ads that also run a large exploit toolkit and result in tens tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people getting their systems infected with malware that steals their passwords and encrypts their files for ransom. Far fewer people would block ads if the ad companies were treated like how certificate authorities are treated, where a breach of trust, allowing fraudulent or malicious abuse of the system, will often get every major browser and OS maker to blacklist that certificate authority, thus effectively putting them out of business. This forces then to be more proactive in dealing with abuse.
that would be one step in the right direction honestly i want bodies of advertisement firm leaders to start turning up with the words "Ad Blocked" carved into their porcine hide see if they get the message then
Oh yeah. I've been an extremist ever since I realized who it is Every Single Time. I'll gladly be labeled an extremist for not wanting them to surveil me 24/7.
They try to stigmatize the common disdain for their parasitic endeavors. It's best to collectively come out and refuse supporting brands that work with marketing firms like this.
I'm an extremist because I'm literally immune to advertising. I run adblockers religiously, and I have no money for impulsive purchases anyway. So the only way their ads will ever convert to my purchases is if they are advertising ramen noodles and processed deli meat.
What's funny is that they're using valid arguments to defend their position, like preserving a free internet, but then it all crumbles when you remember that these advertising agents will fold over to any big corporation or government if it means getting more money.
No no no, this is the issue with English only having the 1 word "free" for multiple different meanings. They mean free like free beer. Google assistant is free as in free beer and it's shitware spying garbage. The only thing you should ever concern yourself over is the free as in freedom internet. Ads threaten this, not the other way around.
What advertisers seem to not understand is that people don't hate ads. They hate intrusive, loud, manipulating, experience-distruptive ads. I am anything they want to call me so long as it means preserving my rights to not have myself constantly bombed with ads designed specifically to prevent me to use the very service I'm trying to access.
20:42 "I'd rather pay 3 dollars for an email service". Exactly why I switched from gmail to protonmail. I wish I could switch from youtube to protontube, but that doesn't exist yet.
I don't remember the last time I have bought something based on advertising. Practically everything I buy is either from researching what I need or someone doing that for me when I have no idea where to start.
19:27 That means that fully 1/3 of users are NOT comfortable being bombarded with advertising, instead of just paying a fair price for a service. It implies that fully 1/3 of users would want to opt out of invasive tracking used to facilitate real-time bidding based advertising. Edit: the Traditional broadcast model is ad supported. Does not rely on tracking everybody.
Early experience as a child taught me the unfortunate lesson that tv style adverts were likely a few minutes of being lied to to part you from cash or influence... I've gone out of my way to stop them from influencing me. Word of mouth, related experiences, even what I see on a shelf and the such, play a far more important role for me, Pros and Cons, with a dash of research if it's required... Maybe that is just me🤷♀
A huge part you missed is even when we pay for services they still sell our info. Twitter still sells and tracks your info. Same with TH-cam red, spotify, and Amazon. Amazon sells and tracks your AWS info. Google tracks you every time you buy a phone. You're paying for the OS. Even blizzard sells your info when you play their games, including wow which is a monthly fee. We're long past just paying for stuff. Even if we paid companies would keep selling our info like they are now. Nevermind we can't own software anymore. Even when renting software they are still selling your info.
Today's would-be tyrants can't lock up people they don't like for just existing. First they have to gradually normalize the idea that everything they do is extremist and dangerous. Frankly this fact should be ringing alarm bells in everyone's heads. Indulging these politicians' slimy use of language is how our concept of freedom and justice will end.
I was thrilled to pay for Hulu when it first came out then they STILL decided to waste my time with ads eventually. Stopped using them, canceled service immediately and never looked back I am happy to pay for an ad free experience, advertising does absolutely nothing but piss me off and make me completely avoid the product for trying to shove their shit in my face.
Labeling people who oppose you as "extremists" has become pretty common because it allows people to just decide "well, they're extremists; they're irrational and not worth listening to" rather than incentivizing anyone to sit down and listen to what "the other side" has to say. Sometimes people actually ARE extremists. Sometimes they're not. But regardless of the issue (tech, advertising, abortion, religion, civil rights, gun ownership, etc), it's so easy to just label EVERYONE who disagrees with you as extremists (and, to be fair, there are extremists on both ends of the spectrum for a lot of these issues) than to try to listen to someone who disagrees with you but ISN'T ACTUALLY an extremist and hold a conversation. A lot of issues (not all of them, but a lot of them) where there are two major schools of thought can be discussed with a certain amount of nuance in terms of legitimate concerns that people on both sides of the issue have. But that has to start with people on both sides being willing to start by asking people who don't like them "what are your concerns and how can I address them in a way that we can both be happy with" instead of just saying "I'm objectively right and anyone who disagrees is an extremist."
Some extremists are extremely worth listening to. For instance, RMS holds the position that software should all be fully user respecting, which he branded as "free software". I think, like the patent system, there could be a more moderate position; e.g. video games could have a window of time when they're not freely reproducible, for rewarding the developers, much like the patent system was intended. Some corporations like Disney and Nintendo hold views at the opposite extreme, that the populace should not have the choice to even maintain their purchased games, let alone share them.

I've been dubbed an extremist and terrorist many times by several organizations for having a working brain. At this point, if somebody as chill as me is getting called names like that, I'd say it's good to be someone that they don't like.
Terrorism is using intimidation and violence as means to an end.
By this definition, all governments are terrorist organizations. And everyone that works for a terrorist organization is by definition a terrorist.

Once you remove accidental clicks the actual click through date is probably 0.0044%.
hmmm yes im sure the 500 billion dollar industry is just throwing away money and totally isn't insanely fucking profitable. mate, it's not about you clicking and buying, it's about manipulating you into choosing their product when you go to the store or otherwise want to buy.

One of the honest on the internet, thank you sharing and carrying about privacy, right to repair etc.

Spot on, as always! Thank you good sir!
Some corporations like Disney and Nintendo hold views at the opposite extreme, that the populace should not have the choice to even maintain their purchased games, let alone share them.
abortion is not an 'issue', it is a fundamental human right as healthcare service
@@sayonaragoodbye9818 I'm pro-abortion but I'm anti-"replying to a four month old post on youtube to try to start an argument with a stranger when you clearly understood the point they were making"
I seriously hope Louis isn’t “suicidal”.
John McAfee moment
I love life
@@rossmanngroupSo did John McAfee...
The advertisers know where you live... and they know where you die.
Rossman will be fine. thinking someone will delete him for speaking his mind is a bit, may I say, extreme?
