Bless you sir. I have an old 318 that was my father's that means a lot to me. I've been trying to figure out to change the starter forever. I'm about 99% certain the starter is the problem at least... I had it running last year
This was very helpful - I have a 420 that needed a starter replacement, I set up my ipad and watched this video step by step while i took the engine out. Couldn't have done it without this. Thank you!
You can remove the 4 bolts holding the drive shaft on and raise one side of the engine up to remove the starter. Also the shroud that you removed does not have to be removed. What you didn't show is that you will have to remove the seat and fenders to get the drive shaft back in the position that it belongs. I have had the enging out of my 318 5 times with replacing the starter and the ignition module. If you buy a starter that is cheap off of Amazon BUy BUY BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY BECAUSE YOU WILL BE TO REPEAT THIS IN ABOUT 15 MONTHS. The 1st starter i replace it took me about 5 hours and now i can do it in about 2 hours.
Thanks so much man I've been looking for a video like this all over what all over what a bummer I've got one too and I've got to replace the starter taking the whole motor out as a lot of work, on but I guess I gotta do it but it does look like the bolts come in from the front of the engine that hold the starters at correct thanks. Do you know what size and length of the 2 bolts holding starter ??? time frame 13:60 to 15:00
Most of the time, you can dress the solenoid contacts and contact ring to allow current flow. If the windings are bad, you can replace just the solenoid
Hi JC. Have a 318 '87 P218G. The previous owner replaced the starter. Noticed a strange sound at start up. Looked closer and the fly wheel and starter are not lined up properly. The flywheel gears are slightly nipped at the side. A filing will fix that but do I need to replace the starter for one that lines up properly? The bolts look tight. " I think the Bendix starter has an open end but the solenoid style I have has the end enclosed. After reading posts in other forums on this same problem, it sounds like the gear end can get clogged with crap and make the sliding part sticky such that it makes it hard to fully extend and engage the flywheel." Found this comment on My Tractor Forum. Could this work too or would it only work with the other type of starter? Other suggestion to resolve the issue? Thanks in advance.
I always pull the engine out with the driveshaft attached. Lining up the driveshaft yoke with the splines on the pump shaft isn't too difficult to do when it comes time to put everything back together. Be careful leaning the engine on its side like that, those Onan oil pans are notorious for breaking the mounting feet off.
Quick question, I pulled off one of those gas lines and the plastic tip broke off of it. What is that part called that the line in and out are coming in from
great video. You showed all the important steps without unnecessary commentary, Thanks for taking the time to film and share.
Thanks for watching

What size battery is that?

The fuel pump that’s on the back of the engine?
so did you change the entire starter, or just the solenoid?
Whole starter
ummm, you dont have to remove the engine. I just did mine, just lifted the engine a few inches gives room for starter removal.
Fair enough. It just allowed easy access for all the other tasks, such as new firewall insulation etc.
Needs a hard start kit from John deere
Thanks for watching
