  • A look at Yamaha's new DXS12 MKII active subwoofer. Having owned a pair of V1 DXS12s for over 5 years - I know the value vs. performance ratio of these is excellent and that they are very reliable and sound great for most mobile DJ and even band applications - especially considering they are a 12" active sub. My go to system for weddings over 150 people is a pair of DXR8s over DXS12s and with the new MKIIs, Yamaha has lowered the weight by 7lbs, added variable hi-passed outputs, cardioid mode, available casters and covers as well as locking IEC power cables, not to mention more power, 3DBs more headroom and of course the 7 year warranty. Can't go wrong for the very reasonable asking price of 799$ US or 999$ canadian. Need more bass? DXS15 MKII and DXS18 might be what you're looking for...

      Hi there Alex. The problem with a sound test on a TH-cam review is that it is pretty much worthless. What YOU would be hearing would be mostly dependant on the quality of your computer speakers in combination with the quality of my camera's internal microphone, not to mention its placement etc. It is simply not a reliable way to get any kind of realistic idea of a speaker or subwoofer's sound quality or output capability etc. I cover the basics and features and talk about my personal experience with the products I test, but sound tests are simply worthless on TH-cam IMO, not to mention TH-cam sends you a notice of copyright infringement if you use any popular tracks . Going to a dealer and properly testing out products is always the best way to know if a given product will meet your needs. Al

    You already said no big difference in sound quality ....but what about loudness does it sound louder then the older version or not?

    • @alpoulin1

      Yes, sound quality is almost identical (to my ears anyway), but as for output - because of the way the limiting/processing works in these subs is very hard to compare. At one point, it just seems that while you feed more signal - the output simply remains the same, and it takes a lot to actually get the limit light to blink, and by that point the woofer is audibly at its limits. I might set them both on the groud with a DB meter at some point to see how much SPL I can get out of them before they are audibly at their limits. The Yamaha specs indicate a 3DB increase from the first DXS12 to the MKII which - to most ears - translates into a roughly 30% increase, so yes noticeable BUT not twice as loud (which requires a 10DB increase in perceived loudness). To me, this simply translates as a little more headroom overall. The V1 of the DXS12 compared favourably to my older Yorkville LS720P (which was a 15") although it didn't quite extend as low, though pretty close. I have rarely ever seen the limit lights activate when using a pair - for wedding type applications (up to 250 people or so), so to me that says they do very well for most typical mobile DJ applications. If you need more bass, the DXS15 or especially DXS18s might be the ticket!

      @@alpoulin1 Thanks but my goal is to get more volume out off small enclosure with little weight so the 15 and 18s are to big for me to carry ....I'm thinking in the direction of Bose F1 sub dual 10" seems like another option to DXS12mkii they are only 55lbs......did you hear them?

    • @alpoulin1

      @@giancarlohernandez1967 I did indeed hear the F1 subs and they are excellent, as are the F1 812 tops. The F1 subs are very musical and extend surprisingly low as well. Warranty is not great and price is up there, but the performance is excellent. I was surprised for a pair of 10s to be honest.

      I have the DXS12 MK1 speaker. I am quite satisfied of them. I understand some limitations of band-pass design, but for 95% situation it is more important to have higher SPL from small/light cabinet. Honestly I was blown away about their SPL in comparison to only 12" speaker built in. Amount of bass from single speaker is enormous and it is not possible to achieve even similar results from a typical bass reflex 12" woofer. Please take a look on new Yamaha's DXS 15 XLF. It is 15" speaker with 4" coil speaker. It has bigger coil size than DSR118 speaker (3" coil) and have higher SPL, but from bass-reflex design! The sound quality must be amazing from that speaker.

    Al, newbie here, would you recommend dxs12 or dxs15 sub to match my 2 dsr115? Im doing live band and Djing. No heavy music. Thank you and more power : )

    • @alpoulin1
      @alpoulin1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The DSR115s are VERY VERY capable (and loud) tops. I would recommend a pair of DXS18s to properly keep up with them :) (probably not what you want to hear lol). A single DXS12 or DXS15 is not going to work well with such big tops in my opinion. A PAIR of the DXS12s of 15s might do OK if you just want some lower frequencies added to your sound - or to better be able to feel the kick drum, but they will not keep up with high passed DSR115s at full volume - just so you know. A pair of hi-passed DSR115s could hang easily with 2 pairs of DXS12s or DXS15s and likely still have a little headroom left - they ARE that loud :)

    Ps12s or these? What do you think

    • @alpoulin1
      @alpoulin1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question... I like the size of the PS12, but prefer the features and 7 year warranty on the Yamaha. I have a feeling the Yamaha will hit harder as well because of the bigger box. If size is a prority, the Yorkville looks great for its dimensions. Will have to rent one to test and compare to the Yamaha.

      @@alpoulin1 I've yet to test the Yamaha Sub 12" but from what I've seen, no other 12 inch subwoofer hits close to the PS12S. You should also take a look at the ES12P Subwoofer from Elite, that will hit harder than many 15" subs in the market.

      @@elishasoussan798 I will have to rent the PS12S soon and review it, I have read many good reviews on it and certainly like the size and weight. There should be a half price rental day coming soon :) I tested the pair of DXS12 MKIIs last weekend for a graduation and noticed some small pieces of ceiling tiles had fallen on my table cloth and equipment, so there was definitely plenty of bass with a pair of these lol
