Thanks for the effort and clever commentary.
This is an older video in 2024 but that RCF sub is still current and being sold.
The main point that would be helpful in future videos is to use a wide bandwidth test song.
That particular song has one musical note centered at 55Hz (an A1 note) which then repeats.
One note doesn't tell us much about the response or power handling above or below that point.
In order to test a sub for clarity, accuracy or extension we need a variety of notes.
55Hz is also close to the center of it's max output, the mid-range peaky point of output.
There is also an occasional G1 note at 49Hz in the test track (at reduced volume) and that one is also not very challenging for a sub. We can tell the output is already dropping at 49Hz so we need a test track that does
    80Hz, 70, 60, 55, 50, 45, 40, 35, 30 etc whether it's music or test tones.
The only reason to include 60, 70Hz at all is to see how exaggerated those notes are vs the others since small subs tend to be peaky with only a few prominent notes.
My clock radio and computer speakers play a lot lower and more accurate than those subs, since small subs are tuned for output, not accuracy.
Some background on why 40Hz or 31Hz.
A regular 4-string bass guitar has a low note of 41Hz on the open E1 string.
That's not particularly low but it's a useful benchmark since guitars are present in a ton of music.
Subs with their output down by 6 - 12dB at 40 or 50Hz are obviously missing a lot, especially if they have a ton more output above that at 60-70Hz making the other notes dissapear or get masked
Neither of those subs hit a low E much at all relative to their output at 65-70Hz.
That is the industry norm in that size and price point since it's far easier to design a sub to get loud at 60Hz than it is to be flat and accurate across a range of notes.
The bandpass design by Yamaha is loud for it's size but can't hit many notes due to being a bandpass cabinet.
It can literally can hit about 8 notes total.
It's not a one note wonder since it can do 8 notes. Gee.
If you look at the output chart it's mostly doing 4 notes well. 55 - 80 or so.
Much less at G1 (49Hz) or anything past that.
The bandpass design is loud but peaky due to physics where it's very efficient within a narrow pass range.
That works fine for some people who don't care or don't know what their missing.
The RCF is a better choice in most settings with a flatter and more musical response with a ported design.
It's still tuned rather high in order to get loud but it's flatter and more useful than the bandpass cabinet.
I play bass and keyboards and have plenty of songs with notes down to a low A0 at 27Hz, Bb or B0 at 31Hz.
That is a full octave past what those 2 small subs can do.
My other subs hit those extra notes very well with a ton of output making a nice effect which is quite audible whether the bass guitar is playing or not since I'm well below what the bass guitar is typically doing. I'm careful with it though to avoid stepping on toes but I do add some massive low-end power at some spots in certain songs for effect.

It takes a lot of power and displacement to do that but it works well and you can always find your place since no one else is playing any content in the sub 30-35Hz range.
I'm familiar with subs that are flat to 18 and 22Hz by design and have many custom designs but usually I tune well above that based on what kind of music will it be used for. 32-34Hz is plenty for nearly all conventional music, assuming it really does do those notes well.
Finding commercial designs that are fairly neutral and flat in their response is quite hard to find until we get into the big, heavy stuff. That's why I run custom 15" subs since they can be built to hit whatever note we need.
We get powerful active subs under 60lbs that are flat to 27Hz with 1.5" throw to do it.
We don't need to hit 20Hz in music but we do need to hit a low A sometimes or at least a B0 (B-zero) at 31Hz since 5 string bass guitars play that note. Kick drums play quite low also depending how they are tuned.
Subs that are missing 27 - 40Hz such as the 2 subs being tested are missing 1 octave.
    A0 (27Hz)
    B0 (31Hz)
    C1 (33Hz)
    D1 (37Hz)
    E1 etc
Yes, I know. They call it "punch" at 60-70Hz.
But, having an earthquake impact "move" the dance floor or the building at 30Hz is a lot more convincing than loud punchy things.
We don't need to take it too far if it's not helping the music,
plus the cost of efficiency and extra displacement have to be considered.
If playing a regular 6-string guitar we don't need to hit much past 82Hz, E2 since that is the fundamental of the open E string. 4-string bass guitar goes another octave to around 41Hz or 31HZ on a 5 string so we size the subs based on what content the instruments will be doing.
If a sub is already starting to drop down by -3dB or -6dB at 49Hz then it's missing many common notes and even more on a 5-string bass or synth.
    Other subs:
Folks who haven't tested them and don't really know tend to give Bose shit such as the Bose Sub2.
However. that is one of the few, (the only) lightweight sub that plays loudly and cleanly way down at 34Hz in actual testing with clearly audible output even at 31Hz. I suspect that is slightly out of phase since it's below the port frequency but I didn't measure it since it sounds good.
Those can play louder than I can stand indoors within 25feet and I haven't bottomed it out outdoors in small/medium sized shows of 200 people or so. The Sub1 however is too small for a live band IF kick drum are ran through it.
They work well for bass tones but not for drums.
The Sub2 at double the displacement, size and power is big enough to handle most settings, but not for outdoor street dances at 200+ feet long. Leave that for double 15' /18" subs which are sized for the job.
Otherwise at around 50lbs, I don't see anything else commercially made that is flat or accurate as those.
A pair of Sub2 at 50lbs each closely stacked or in cardiode mode may be the lightest, deepest, high ouput sub combo around. There are reviews around but most talk the whole time or play a song with no musical value so we can't tell much. IF we could put photos on here I'd add the response and max output curves to compare to the other subs.
Most subs need to be an 18" to even come close to that.
So even though prices are a bit high on a Sub2, there is a reason in that they are hitting notes that few subs can do and they're doing it with long throw woofers w Neodymium magnets to cut down the weight, which are expensive components. None of the common JBL, QSC, Peavy, EV etc subs are putting in that much effort while using cheap, heavy ferrite magnets in their designs.
A few high end RCF /dB Tech subs have lightweight Neo magnets and a lot of output per size, but those are at a higer price point of $2200 -3500 each.
Anyway, thanks for listening and try some wide bandwidth test songs in the future.
    Something with a kick drum,
blues on 4 and 5 string bass,
or jazz with an upright acoustic bass that hits all notes from 31 up to 100Hz.
Then we'll find out what notes it can really hit vs a 1-note test song.
I have many original test tracks and songs with full output at 40, 32, 27, 20 or even 10Hz if someone needs it.
Actual music with deep fundamentals on pipe organ, drums and rock songs with deep synth tones that give any speaker a full test and a workout. My equipment can run down to 1Hz or DC but we don't need those notes.
It seems like there is a shortage of quality test songs intended for testing subs so maybe I'll drop some out there sometime.
Thanks again, that was a good comparison.

there is no replacement for size and weight when it comes to subs. The RCF's cabinet walls will flex if its lighter weight, you loose a a db or so due to cabinet walls flexing as the the energy is converted into movement instead of sound. The best subs are the ones where you knock on the side and you don't hear a hollow sound solid multi birch ply with tons of bracing. Manufacturers have started allowing flexing to reduce the weight. That said, the RCF is as good as it gets for that price point and weight.

Great video. I actually took your advice earlier this summer and got an RCF 705as II. It's exactly what I need in a sub. Light enough to carry around myself but still beefy and loud enough to satisfy. I use Yamaha tops, too...dxr 12s...and that probably explains why I took your advice seriously....Yamaha DXR tops are absolutely fantastic but j experimented with a Yamaha 15" sub for a day and it was way too heavy.

Agreed...that's a good assessment of them. The DSP does a great job on the Yamaha's. My only caveat is that the Yamaha's have a tough time keeping that up all night. Partly due to the size (12 vs 15) and partly due to the DSP on the 12 pushing the speaker beyond what it should be capable of doing. The Yamaha will limit way before the RCF and won't hold the lowest frequencies all night. Just my observations..YMMV

YOWWWWW Mr. P! This is by far one of the BEST reviews I have ever seen on TH-cam!!!!! I have been on the fence about which subs to get when i upgrade. I am a much bigger guy than you and i am running from those heavy subs too. Lastly were you playing Courtney Melody or the Golden Hen Riddim? I could not tell. Great Review!!!!!

@Scott 1I agree with you there. I play all kinds of music, but I have been getting a lot more pop and hip hop and Latin party playlists. I am currently caught between the QSC K12.2 and the Yamaha DXR12 as mains. The K12.2s have a great amount of bass for 40-60 guest dance floors. Have not been able to listen to the Dxr12 because no one keeps them in stock in here. However i know the Yamahas have a brighter top end (which I love being a current EV speaker owner) I just listened to the Dxr10s and I liked the brighter top end better than the k12.2s.

      Hey Scott,
Been doing this a long time bro. The best sound reinforcement is your bass speakers on the floor near a wall if possible and your mids/highs in the air where the sound can travel. This is an indisputable fact.
Low Freq's do best on the ground and near walls. This is the most efficient way to deliver bass. Putting only 2-ways or 3-ways in the air means you are wasting that low freq using the least efficient method possible. Put those mains on the floor and you waste the highs.
Your statement that you don't need a Sub is factually correct, but in reality makes no sense.
Keep in mind that as a mobile DJ, there is no answer to the question you just asked. We play everything. When I do club work I can pick a genre and people pay to come here that style of music. When you are mobile you are paid to play multiple styles of music.
My video was to help people who understand this and are interested in these products. There are other videos where you can argue the merits of passive vs active, 2 way vs 3 way, amp vs bi-amp or LPF/HPF vs X-over.

Seriously check the Yamaha's The DXR can't be beat. The new K12.2 sounds much more like it but the Yamaha is still brighter with a nice LF. Add the longer warranty and cheaper price. It's a better Value. I run the DXR 12's and 8"s

Man you can't compare 15" to 12" and by far Yamaha beats the RCF in what ever you want "Sound quality , Durability , Quality of the Amps and circuits etc" you can compare Yamaha to the Kv2 audio or daneley speakers but RCF "toys" i dont think so

You need to add a V next to your C's.

Hey! Sorry on late reply on your comment from a few weeks ago. I actually just run my sub off my booth output channel, separately from my tops. I hook up the master outs to my top PA speakers left and right and run one quarter inch to XLR cable to my one RCF sub. I set the top speakers to regular full range, but turn off the "D" countour that boosts bass and highs on it, if I"m using the subs. I've always preferred the sound of the full range of the tops even if using with a sub. Since I can easily adjust the sub volume with the booth output volume knob, I can control the levels of the mix easily. I don't think this is really the typical "normal" way to do things, but I find it works pretty well and gives me more control than doing it otherwise.

    Dxs15 mk2 1399 dollars here in canada 135 spl 79 lbs
    Rcf 705 mk3 2100 dollars here in Canada 131spl 61 lbs
My money is going to the yamaha dxs15 mk2 with that 7 year amazing guaranty and that 20 pounds Will translate to better Bass i cannot justify paying 1400 extra for that rcf double 705 mk3 instead of that double dxs15 setup.
    2800 total for a brand New dual dxs15 mk2
4200 total for a brand new
    Dual 705mk3 setup.
Sorry but Thats alot of Cash Just for lugging an Extra 40 pounds.
Plus that yamaha dxs15 mk2 side by side pounds the rcf Although the rcf has a bigger voice coil
2.5 vs 3 on the rcf if im not mistaking.
Wish money was not an issue my art 312-a would look best with the r f but ohhhh well

People are fooled with the name, RCF contains low quality amplifiers, low quality DSP. YAMAHA uses much highe quality amplifier, Much powerful DSP, In addition to the build quality, you cannot compare RCF to YAMAHA. I would go to the YAMAHA for sure.
