I saw your plug for salt. My mother-in-law told me years ago to soak new dark/bright clothing items individually in cold salt water, adding a handful or two of salt and leave for 15 to 30 minutes. Then add to the wash and the salt sets the color. Her other daughter-in-law soaked some orange volleyball shorts for her daughter and by the end of the season, those were the only shorts on the team that were the original color.
When I was in primary school (late 60's) we did Tye-dying. In the final rinse of the garment we always used salt to 'set' the colours. Still works even now!
Love your fabric softener idea, was life changing for me. I have been using that from the first time you mentioned in one of your videos. Since then I have convinced my Mom and my brother in law to do so as well. Yes, lavender is the greatest, although during Christmas time I use Christmasy scents. 😊 Thanks
SUCH GREAT IDEAS!!! This was very gratifying and satisfying to watch all your Laundry hacks and solutions! Thank you so very much for sharing your wonderful Ideas and Talents.
For anyone using portable washers - I have the Panda portable (11 lb capacity) and i've found that those things are very finicky when it comes to lint. It will error out all the time if you use liquid detergent. At first i thought it was a manufacturer's defect, but started trying everything i could. On a second floor apartment with no laundry hook-ups, and i DON'T do laundromats. Anyway - white vinegar finally got it back in tip top shape, cleared anytime it would clog, and it works everytime now! I love how much it softens the clothes, too. I use a cup of white vinegar per wash, and 10-15 drops of essential oil (sometimes a blend of half tea-tree, half lavender). If i do use laundry soap, I add about 10 drops of castille soap, and no regular laundry detergent. Sparkly clean every time and the washer now works great. I love using white vinegar, it saved my little Panda portable washer and i like how it softens my clothes. Also, I use a mix of 1c hot water and a few tbsp. of borax for the whites, I like how it works in place of bleach.
love love love your advice - however most of its for folks with their own washer / dryers - any chance you could do a video or two on options for folks using "shared" / "public" laundry machines - thnx
just woke up & washed so of your videos. they inspired me to clean, starting with my pillows lol. btw, not heard the word 'cupboard' since I left Africa 20yrs ago. great & helpful videos :-)
Sweat stains! A new phenomenon in my life. My whole body chemistry changed after menopause. Not underarm stains. I get them around the neckline of my white tees. I've tried everything. I hope u can help. Thanks for your always awesome cleaning tips!
drying sneakers in the dryer is super dangerous! A friend of mine is an insurance inspector for fire damage and a huge amount of fires are caused by the glue used in the shoes igniting.
hi melissa!been watching almost all your videos here on clean my space channel.it really helps me to make my chores easy and saves me more time specially while taking care of my boys a 1yr old and 5yrs old..just imagine how our house get constant mess. My most challenging laundry issue is how can I remove dried rust stains on our clothes??Hope you could help me on this. Thanks!
hello! Thank you for all of your advice! We just bought a he top load washing machine. It doesn't have a place to add detergent (only for bleach, and softener). Since the water doesn't start until after the load of clothes are put in, when would i add the detergent to the drum, before or after the clothes? Thank you!
this is very good, totally helpful thank you.loved watcing these videos..I found I must watch a couple times as I need to write the measurements down and or amounts to use.
Hi Melissa, I have a question regarding the vinegar & baking soda for taking the crunchiness out of towels. If the towel tags say they can be washed at max 40°c, can that count as hot enough water? Also, can i put the vinegar in with the laundry detergent on the first cycle or do I have to do 3 cycles, the first with detergent? I have a lot of clothes and towels that have gotten crunchy and I don't have a dryer so I would like to try this but just want to confirm these things! Thanks!
I LOVE to do laundry! I know it sounds crazy, but I do. I will make the homemade fabric softener you told us about. I shop a lot at thrift stores so I wash those clothes separately the first time and have noticed that most people use either too much laundry detergent or too much softener and the clothes are sometimes very dull. I think there's an art to making clothes look fresh and new and I love doing that. Thanks for the great tips!
It would be great to have hacks to clean out the washer machine and dryer. Sometimes I get nasty moldy smell in my front open washer machine. It would be awesome to have a natural or DIY solutions!
Pour a cup or two of bleach in the bleach compartment and run a regular cycle with the extra rinse option and make sure you use cold water only. Don't have any clothing inside the machine. I do this once every 2 weeks. Before you do the bleach wash, take an old towel or cloth and dip it in vinegar and open the machine door and put the cloth in between the flaps of the seal. Let it sit for a while and when you go to take it out take a clean cloth and wipe down between the seal flaps all the way around the entire circle. Slimey mildew and buildup gets trapped there and will make your clothes start to smell. Vinegar will break it down without you having to scrub it. I also drain the water and clean the filter from the hose at the bottom of the machine about once a month. The SMELL OF THAT WATER IS REVOLTING.
Will this your tricks. Laundry is the chore I hate the most. I hate laundry so much I reuse my dryer sheets for cleaning cloths. They make for great scrubbers without scaring things and you just toss them when you're done. No wash clothe to clean. There great for detail cleaning around the house and in the car.
Stephanie Morson I do! Our floor shares a laundry room and we cannot keep paying each time we need to do extra. I dump everything together and also leave it to soak for 20 minutes. It really helps with the smelly toddler clothes!
My biggest laundry challenge is getting clothes to come out without needing to be ironed (especially button-up shirts)! I've tried hang drying, machine drying at different temps, etc but nothing seems to make much difference! The bottom few inches like to curl up!
All advice good, great video :-) only the sun and whites if you do it in summer when the sun is strong like around the noon - all the whitening elements in washing powders or liquids that usually people wash their whites in will turn the wite clothes to yellow - in the old days it was used and worked miracles the sun /my granny use to do it - but the washing detergents where different those days/ this is my personal experience with sun and white clothes :-) but the tumble dryer idea just perfeeec thank you :-D
Great video! Can you help me ? we don't have an exhaust fan in our kitchen and because of the moisture in the kitchen our ceiling fan gets really dirty due to the dust settling on top. How do we keep this clean without constantly dusting the top of the fan?
I would have to say my biggest challenge with laundry is all those little, annoying balls that are getting all over everything. My washer is new this year, not like yours mine is a top loading washer. I have watched all your videos ( I believe ) on laundry and cleaning the washer and dryer and I've taken your advice on everything. I am beside myself that I mean everything, (especially the black clothing )is coming out literally covered in white balls, black balls etc. I am picking them off, which is not an easy task and takes forever or I'm using scissors to try and cut them off but I must say I've nicked a few holes into my clothing. HELP ME PLEASE!!!! Absolutely am inspired by Clean my Space. It has made me more organized and efficient with so many things around the house. It is overwhelming, however, daily I'm crossing things off my to do list and that feels AMAZING!!! I have you to thank for that. Your fan from Hamilton,Ontario Jodi
Hi Melissa! Love your videos....just wondering what color your fingernail polish is? So pretty! Do you know best way to clean microfiber loveseat? Nan 🍂🎃🍁
Great hacks! :) Thanks for this video! I only have one question - is there any substitution of white vinegar, because in my country (Bulgaria) it's very hard (close to impossible) to find?
(Jen) She didn't do it in the previous video and I complained about it -- that's why I commented and mentioned it again. That's what this joke was about
can you make video about how to clean/ machine wash comforters (polyster fill)at home? Also some drying tips for it..i have a washer with agitator, so is it appropriate to wash such bulky comforters in such washer? please advice.
Does the chalk help remove already grease stained clothes, that have been washed previously? I'm having a hard time removing a few grease stains from a tunic I have. :(
I have a question about adding salt. I usually add baking soda with my detergent, is it ok to put both or do I just skip the baking soda if I need to use the salt ? Also, should it be any specific type of salt...table, course, etc?
Fabric softener stops towels from absorbing water - line drying in a breeze or using a dryer also makes them soft. Living in New Zealand, can't beat a strong southerly for soft towels and clothes
How do you launder your carpet?? I have a rug machine, but I don't have a great homemade detergent. I haven't seen a video on this, but maybe I'm missing something (5 years is a long time!) Love you guys.
I would love to know how to safely clean an old nylon? parka, kind of padded though I don't know what with. I like to use for (@@) shoveling snow. Thanks again for what you do!
can u make a video on how to deep clean furniture specifically sofas. I just finished buying a used vintage shabby chic sofa and I don't know how to tackle cleaning it and disinfecting it without damaging the shabby chic fabric which I love. please help
Another laundry hack: Instead of using dryer sheets to prevent static, you can also use aluminum foil and ball it up, throw it into the dryer and it takes the static out of your clothes
Hi Melissa. I love white sweatshirts and wear them around the house until they fall apart. Mine all have yellow stains I think from the Clorox. I also live in an apartment on the 8th floor. I have a very sunny window. Would your sun trick work Han g ing them indoors with the window in between?
Many of today’s dryers have an air cycle so it is safe to dry sneakers or rubber sandler’s in dryer. If you don,t have this feature there should be a low heat setting to use. You can partially use the dryer, then remove and finish air drying. You actually don’t want to totally dry in dryer because in some brands the padding will come loose. Salt or white vinegar is good for keeping colors from transferring. When you first wash an item do this in a basin. The next way you can do in washing machine with either the salt or white vinegar in wash cycle.
Have you ever tried Epsom salt as softener? Clean my space I use 1 qt (1 ltr) with 20 or 30 drops EO and 1/8 cup or two tablespoons per load. You could use more but that's what I do.
hey guys! love your laundry tips!!! if you have any tips for large families in laundry schedule and also having kids help do laundry. my 9 and 11 yr old help out already its just the folding and putting away that can be challenging for us all. i find that we have lots of clean clothes in large baskets or huge ikea bags. my husband and i work fulltime and we have a cray busy schedule! anyways...thanks for all you do!!
Ghetto drying tip, put the shoes in the car, in the rear window, behind the back seat. The sun will take care of that. Note: if your sneakers are worth stealing, do not do this.
cyoohoos Our shoes always end up on the back porch for sun drying as it helps with any smells that might accumulate. ☺ Never thought about the car. Thanks!
For the two cycles for musty towels, is it hot water, vineager, AND detergent? and then hot water, baking soda, AND detergent? or do those ingredients by themselves clean your towels for regular use?
Please do a, everything you can use white vinegar for, yes I'm new to this cleaning with vinegar, however I've got this white vinegar, cleaned my sink & wow!! Looks amazing, I want to no more.....😁thank you 😁
We are renting due to a job transfer. We (I) have to use the dreaded laundromat. Any tips on getting my clothes clean? I've pretreated stains, but my clothes never come out clean. All washer are front loading. HELP !!!!
Hi Melissa! Would the baking soda or vinegar corrode the metals in your machine? I wanted to try the vinegar or baking soda hacks but im hesitant coz of that. Please enlighten me ☺
I like your idea with the chalk. But I would like to know what to do when going to laundromat. I go once a week. How do I deal with grease stains? Yhank you for your help.
I notice oil stains after I wash my clothes. I've changed detergents, spot clean, I've tried adding vinegar/lemon juice. still no luck. going to try chalk and see if that works. thanks for the video:)
I just love that unit at the back of the room. Can you show it in more detail as I want to copy it. please. Especially how it stays up against the wall. thanks
How long have you had your washer and dryer? Which model lg washer and dryer do you have? Does it clean your clothes good the first wash cycle or do you have to was more than once to get your clothes clean? Have you had any problems with your washer and dryer at all from the day you bought it to now? I have a HE top load washer and am hearing that a front load washer is better at cleaning clothes. Sometimes I have to wash my clothes more than once Thank you in advance 😊
Hi i like your videos and the are very useful. I want your advice ...is it ok if i use white vinegar which we use in our salads...coz thats what i get here or else if you could help put a picture of the product details it would help me buy the right product. Many thanks
My question has to do with fabric stains, so it's kinda related to this laundry post. I'm making my first quilt by hand embroidering about 25% of the blocks. Upon ironing them I noticed a few spots on some of the blocks (quilters cotton fabric). Looking at the soleplate of my iron I see that many of the holes are clogged with mineral deposits, so I assume this is what has stained my fabric. Any ideas on what would remove them from the fabric? Perhaps vinegar?
Hi Melissa! Thank you so much for your tips! I find them soooo usuful! I have a problem with white towels, some of them became grey where we used them the most and I really can't get rid of that greyish ring in the middle! I tried to wash them at 90 degrees but nothing! Second problem...how can you get rid of yellow rings under arms? I think it's deodorant that caused them in a few blouses and t-shirts of mine!
I need your help! Can you make a video on how to maintain the washing machine and dryer? My washing machine is starting to have this odor and it is not cool. What should i use to clean the outer plastic lining around the washing machine?
Melissa, what are some great and safe ways to clean baby clothes? Especially with food stains like sweet peas, baby spit ups and of course stinky poop stains. How can I get rid of the stains? Thanks!
•Washing with cold water helps to prevent fading and keeps colour bright. •Be careful with what you use fabric softener/dryer sheets with. Fabric softener/dryer sheets make athletic clothing into just normal clothing; meaning, if it has any breathable, moisture-wicking, etc. properties, they fabric softener/dryer sheets will take those properties away. Further, fabric softener/dryer sheets makes flame retardant items no longer flame retardant (some examples of flame retardant clothings are Halloween costumes, you children's clothing, etc.). •Fold/hang up your clothing as soon as your dryer is finished and while the laundry is still hot/warm; this helps to drastically reduce wrinkles. If you forget about your clothes in the dryer and the clothes grow cold, just turn the dryer back on for a couple minutes to "refresh" your laundry so that you can fold/hang it up.
Hi Melissa, do you have any suggestions on how to remove underarm deodorant stains on my black sweaters and t-shirts? I've stopped using deodorant and antiperspirants, I use a salt ball.
Heads up on this product which took me forever to find- something that works and makes for fresh smelling clothes without even using Fabric Softener! ●Bio Enzyme Power Arm & Hammer Biodegradable Detergent● I love it#!!##!#! btw love your vids too Thx for all the help😀
Hi Melisa, Love your channel and organization of your home. I am struggling with some washing machine issue that maybe you will have some solution: my washing machine have got massive "black" cover all over the rubber parts, i tryed cicles with vinegar and washed every other parts of the machine , tried with Baking Soda , but nothing helps, Maybe you have some tip how to get rid of it as it makes horrible smell (it is like yeast i guess) and makes laundry much less smell pleasant. thanks a lot Yulya
Hi Melissa, Love love love your videos. Here are a few questions. Did you add venigar to the soap dish in your video or softener bin? Also, if I have to add borax and baking soda, can I combine both and where do I put them? And heard vinegar actually damages the machine and its parts when we add to the dish tray. So can we add it to the drum directly instead. Would love to hear from you.
I saw your plug for salt. My mother-in-law told me years ago to soak new dark/bright clothing items individually in cold salt water, adding a handful or two of salt and leave for 15 to 30 minutes. Then add to the wash and the salt sets the color. Gail Mariage thank you for the tip!
Hello :) Can iodized salt be used or must it be rock salt?
I love my crispy towels. Excellent exfoliation!
Charlene Ackimenko 😄😄😄😁
Never put conditioner on your towels. They won’t dry as well if you do!
Not if you have a health condition with pain it doesn't; nor does it help those with sensory issues.
That is a genius way to dry shoes! Thanks for sharing
Great video as always! Loved the shoe drying hack...why didn't I think of that? I've been having shoes bang around for years...lol
Lol
My husband and our children and I loved Sedona, AZ. And all the other towns. I want to go back and live there. Thanks for the video.
Love your fabric softener idea, was life changing for me. I have been using that from the first time you mentioned in one of your videos. Since then I have convinced my Mom and my brother in law to do so as well. Yes, lavender is the greatest, although during Christmas time I use Christmasy scents. 😊
Thanks
SUCH GREAT IDEAS!!! This was very gratifying and satisfying to watch all your Laundry hacks and solutions! Thank you so very much for sharing your wonderful Ideas and Talents.
For anyone using portable washers - I have the Panda portable (11 lb capacity) and i've found that those things are very finicky when it comes to lint. It will error out all the time if you use liquid detergent. At first i thought it was a manufacturer's defect, but started trying everything i could. Elizabeth Johnston I agree! Please help those of us who use laundromats/apartment laundry rooms! We have huge front loading machines.
Melissa thank you so much for making every household chore easier. I almost feel excited to do them after seeing your videos.
just woke up & washed so of your videos. they inspired me to clean, starting with my pillows lol. btw, not heard the word 'cupboard' since I left Africa 20yrs ago. great & helpful videos :-)
I'm doing laundry right now. I actually really enjoy it. The only part I don't like is folding the clothes afterwards,
Ron Martinez That's my favourite part! Haha :)
Ron Martinez Did you try the konmari folding?
same
Me neither! :)
Ron Martinez I enjoy folding the clothes tbh, maybe we should team up 😂
Sweat stains! A new phenomenon in my life. My whole body chemistry changed after menopause. Not underarm stains. I get them around the neckline of my white tees. I've tried everything. I hope u can help. Thanks for your always awesome cleaning tips!
I love watching your videos. My biggest problem is measuring detergent. How much should I use?
drying sneakers in the dryer is super dangerous! A friend of mine is an insurance inspector for fire damage and a huge amount of fires are caused by the glue used in the shoes igniting.
thanks for the warning :)
Yes thanks for the warning. I don’t use the dryer but some of my neighbors do. Will let the owner know.
And I can't imagine that heat is good for the rubber parts of the shoes.
Eva Bittner, True. I’ve never dried my shoes n a dryer & I’m talking ab many moons. Never thought it was necessary.
I agree, I air dry my shoes much safer.
The sneakers in the dryer tip? Mind. Blown.
Love your videos! 😊
Question - what do I do about lint on my clothing? It's happening every wash now. Thank you in advance!

hey, another tip for oil stains is to soak the area in dish soap, rub it in, before tossing the item into the washer
Ahhh Suke Suke ~I add a drop of dawn dish soap to the stain
Ahhh Suke Suke
KD Rikess, me too for many yrs. 😬
this worked last week on my light blue scrub top when chocolate melted in the pocket
This is great about the laundry. Getting it done is my problem. Lol. Thanks. Really enjoy this program.

Biggest laundry challenge- keeping up with the sheer volume of it!

Thanks!
Well, it's just girls over here. So I could see where some funky man sneakers would need to be dried OUTSIDE....

Looks amazing, I want to no more.....😁thank you 😁
Hi Melissa is there something you can put in your iron so when the steam comes out the water smells good and the clothes come out smelling fresh.
Please enlighten me ☺
Hi Malissa, where do you buy your spray bottles and any plain bottles you use for your recipes?
I like your idea with the chalk. But I would like to know what to do when going to laundromat. I go once a week. How do I deal with grease stains? Yhank you for your help.
Our dryer came with a rack for shoes and such. Do newer dryers (last 5 years or so) no longer include this?
I notice oil stains after I wash my clothes. I've changed detergents, spot clean, I've tried adding vinegar/lemon juice. still no luck. going to try chalk and see if that works. thanks for the video:)
Can you use vinegar and baking soda method with clothes as well?
will these work for regular efficiancy washers? We don't have high efficiancy. Hoe do i get rid of a ranberry stain?
Does the 1/2 cup salt to luck in the colors work with 100% cotton clothes, as it does with your plastic clothes?
Love it!! Thanks for all your great videos!
ADDICTED to your videos. How about grease stains that you didn't notice and have already been washed & dried without being treated?
Thanks!
thanks for the tips on towels!
Do you use the steam function on the dryer? Does it actually reduce the need for ironing? or another gimmick?
I hear the best fabric softener to use is Vinegar
I love your laundry hacks! A couple of weeks ago I ended up buying those hedgehog dryer balls you talked about in a previous video!
I double rinse my laundry. When the water fills, I put 5 drops of tea tree oil in it, and let it run it's cycle...I have no complaints!!!!
Hi Melissa, do you have any suggestions on how to remove underarm deodorant stains on my black sweaters and t-shirts? I've stopped using deodorant and antiperspirants, I use a salt ball.
Never used vingar for my towels b4 trying it now sick off them feeling so rough thanks
Heads up on this product which took me forever to find- something that works and makes for fresh smelling clothes without even using Fabric Softener!

Arm & Hammer Biodegradable Detergent●
I love it#!!##!#!
btw love your vids too Thx for all the help😀
I'm so glad I found this channel, can't wait to see all your videos ❤️️
Hi Melisa, Love your channel and organization of your home.
I am struggling with some washing machine issue that maybe you will have some solution:
my washing machine have got massive "black" cover all over the rubber parts, i tryed cicles with vinegar and washed every other parts of the machine , tried with Baking Soda , but nothing helps,
Maybe you have some tip how to get rid of it as it makes horrible smell (it is like yeast i guess) and makes laundry much less smell pleasant.
thanks a lot
Yulya
Hi Melissa, Love love love your videos. Here are a few questions. Did you add venigar to the soap dish in your video or softener bin? Also, if I have to add borax and baking soda, can I combine both and where do I put them? And heard vinegar actually damages the machine and its parts when we add to the dish tray. So can we add it to the drum directly instead. Would love to hear from you.
