This is awesome Matt! After extension is it better to swing around your head or just hold out the bat vertically with the left arm if your righty OR is that part a preference thing?
My son is 14 and I’m sure he’s tired of hearing me because we’ve been building his swing for years. He has rarely strikes out but he doesn’t get extension. It’s exhausting.
I am a guy that has no stride I’m trying to develop one I want to know obviously when it’s an outside pitch you wait on it and inside you swing early how are you able to recognize the outside pitch and be able to wait on it do you change your stride when it’s outside do you hold it up longer what do you do? And what’s the secret?
by all mean not a hitting coach but what helps me is imagining i'm hitting the ball with my back hip, this will help you hit the ball deep on outside pitches and at the same time clear your hips for the inside ones
Hey Matt thanks for all your videos. I saw a video, during the quarantine, of you and your son playing catch. It was very impressive. I know he is young and was wondering if you could do a video about teaching tee- ball age kids to catch with their glove. My son just turned 4 this month and I’m basically just working on him grounding the ball, and not catching, because it’s tough for him to close the glove.
A trick I did with my kids was to use a squishy ball. Something that wouldn’t hurt them than take off the glove and have them hold up their hand fingers up. Just throw it to them and they will catch it the proper way almost immediately. Don’t lob it in, put a little zip on it . The problem people have is the lob the ball at them with the glove on and the kid gets in the habit of holding the glove palm up. Hope this helps
i got the phoenix skinny training bat of birch. i love using that thin bat with the tee. my goal is to his the ball with no flap from the tee holder. i do my wind down and I call it and then let it rip. I usually do my wind down swing about 4 times then take the swing on the fifth. sort if like music everything in FOURS.
This isn't what I thought was meant by extension. I noticed something interesting at 1:31 (freeze the frame right there). Look how powerful that looks! This explains why the furthest balls I ever hit were foul to the left (pulled)! I always tried to compensate by closing my stance off more and more (I realize now that didn't do a whole lot, because I just immediately stepped into a square stance).
I'd like to see a series on hitting myths that coaches teach youth players. I get really frustrated with the hitting advice that kids are being given these days.
Matt thank you for all the time that you spend teaching people about this sport even though you’ve already retired. Really unselfish. Thanks 🙏
Awesome stuff Matt, I love listening to you talk baseball and baseball swings.
Great description and well demonstrated topic that gets misunderstood so ofter.
needed this been strugglin

I came here to learn my golf swing. Great video.
And let this be the last word on extension, one of the most misunderstood parts about hitting. Thank you, Matt!

break down YErmin mercedes swing! There is some interesting stuff going on there.
Fantastic! Best explanation I have ever heard of all of these oft used terms. .
Do you think switch hitters have a higher chance at being better or making it farther in their career

Don’t fight or force extension... it is a byproduct of a good swing. Great words of advice on this topic
Michael Brantley is a good one to watch do this. Professional hitter!

Interesting... was talking about this with my coach today- 6 balls worth of extension makes a hall of famer.
Thank you 💕
hi Matt, do snap your hands?
Thanks
Miguel Cabrera always did the palm up method through out his carrer.
Thanks for the video I’m that guy who extends all the way and pulls the ball every time
“You’re holding a pizza on a platter and you are going to slide it across a table.” Sound good for palm up/extension?

Very interesting not only for baseball players but also for any baseball lover like me
