I found that engaging all inner brakes on works best. The dial seems backwards to most reels. I had boocoo backlashes until I figured out that the dial was opposite of most reels. Once I figured that out all seems good. I really like the reel since I figured out what makes it tick.
Just got the STX today. Back lashed the heck out of it just adjusting it for the weight (one quarter ounce) of the bait and let it hit the ground. Lol. I had all the breaks off and left just a hair play in the spool. I sit there and watched it back lash for about 5 seconds like a big dummy. I'm hoping I can get 50 or 60 ft casts with it towards the bank while slowly trolling on my kayak.
I am deliberating between the Abu Garcia REVO STX Gen 4 Casting Reel and the Abu Garcia REVO MGX2-HS-L Casting Reel. I like the Gull Wing attached side plate design for the STX Gen 4, but I am worried about what I've read regarding the MGX2 side plates flying off the reel for many users. Do you think the MGX2 has a design flaw? Or, do you feel complaints about the MGX2 side plate is attributable to user error??? Do you think the MGX2 is worth the step up in price?????

Dont take this wrong... Since your reviews i purchased revo premier gen 3, and premier gen 4, revo stx gen4, curado 70 and Curado k.... But my stx i can bomb casts with two brakes... What rod you use a broom stick? My theory is if throw light bait want whippy rod.

Never had problems with the thumb bar, hardly ever backlash and if I do it’s usually my fault and and they are my smoothest reeling and casting reels. I love shimano spinning reels but don’t like any of there new casting reels but the older models are great. I think one reason you may be backlashing so much is because of that line. I don’t know what kind it is but it looks like it has lots of memory. Love you vids and keep up the great work.

I got one with for 100€ shipped and it doesnt have any issues. the brakes are finicky, but once theyre set i rarely change the settings. Also mine doesnt have any issues with the thumb bar, maybe they have bad quality control?
I just opened it up and the mechanism looks solid, the stx has many metal parts and the delrin pinion holder, while the x only has delrin parts. In this case i think you just got unlucky with yours. :/
What reel test said. EVERY single one of my Abu Garcia feels Ive owned have had the thumb bar break on me. Other than that they are alright, Im a shimano reel/daiwa rod kinda guy though

Doyo is the one who makes Abu Garcia Revo and their other low profile reels, Lews and other brands too. So with the exception of the brakes and spool, everything else on these reels is Doyo tech.

Bad job comparing the equipment. Everyone knows that rods play a difference in casting. Doesn't matter if the rods are the same length and action. Rods between different manufacturers are going to be different. Preload is extremely important in a cast. If your comparing any reels, not just these two, you need to use the same lure, same line and same rod.
Finally found a weight for the Revo Premier Gen 4 spool... th-cam.com/video/xzQy4TNg6So/w-d-xo.html at around 6:33 mark. 11 grams with bearing is pretty good. Think that even has the Zillion SV TW beat. I wonder if or how much that lighter spool will improve the ABU, bums me out though because the STX seems tougher with an aluminum sideplate and brass gears. Keep the great equipment review coming!!! you really shouldn't be trying to teach people how to cast unless you're talking to extreme novice. i have no internal breaks i leave my external on almost free at 2clicks open and the clutch basically free as well and i never have these problems casting any lure size and i never have to adjust anything. I'm not trying to be a jerk but i wasn't aware that people depended on breaks for casting because my break is basically just my thumb. it seems like if you're that dependent on them you may as well just use a spinning reel. the point of a bait caster is control you really should be able to cast back handed one handed into the wind if you really know how to use the reel.again not trying to be a jerk just seems like allot of misinformation here.

The distances looked to be about even with the topwater, and slightly farther for the STX on the crankbait from my observations.

the thumbar functions but feels like its fragile and going to break, Revo X the same way but not as bad. Brakes are OK after you wipe the brake ring

Seems to be a common theme amongst Abu products. They are usually really good about replacing stuff though.

I never had the gen 3 STX, but if the thumbar doesnt go bad it should be a great reel, dual brakes and all
