The big things about the modern Mario Party games that many people fail to realize is that NDcube (the people behind Mario parties 9-jamboree) are former Hudson devs. The director of Mario party 6 is the same director for 9 and 10. It almost puts the modern Mario parties in a depressing light since it’s clear the devs wanted to make something different, but didn’t know how to properly evolve the series until they basically just put their hands up and brought back the old formula. Also every Mario party has a bad Metacritic score, Mario party 6 has a lower score than 9, so bringing those up means nothing.
When I was younger I assumed the in-game Canon reason Haunted Trail and Airship Central weren't in Bowser Party was because the boards didn't have enough space to fit Bowser in.
That's a better explanation that what Nintendo did lol. Though it still would've been cool if for Airship Central, Bowser rides his Clown Car or even just the Airship itself and it extends that big claw thingy from New Mario U to abduct Team Mario for a Bowser Mini-Game.
I think that the Boo mechanic is what would make the Bowser Party version of Haunted Trail messed up, since it wouldn't make sense of whether Boo has any ability to hinder the group now that they are co-op, or having Bowser stomping on his literal minion. But yes, you're right.

You have no idea how refreshing it is to see someone giving this era of Mario Party an honest, GENUINE chance. Mario Party 9 in particular is actually one of my favorite games in the series so it's nice to see someone else who likes it too ^^
So the other languages are at least honest that it's just a collection of 100 mini-games while in America, it's the Top 100 Mini-Games according to an unpaid intern at Nintendo named Jason, got it.

lol I haven’t even touched 8dx since wave 6 came out please I already own 8 WiiU and I’m just really for a new Mario kart it’s been 10 years without a new Mario Kart. So I just went back to playing some of my other games that I hardly played or touched here lately.

If there’s one thing the Dark Age has going for it, it’s the sound design; underrated aspect in my opinion. It says a lot that voice clips recorded specifically for MP10 and/or MK8 weren’t mostly replaced until Jamboree. Same with the point sound effects in mini-games (+1, +2, +3, +4, and +5).
I'm just glad the series is now truly back to its routes. Shouldn't have taken Nintendo Cube as long as it did to get it right though. Also its nice to see you're a fellow Panty and Stocking enjoyer.

The worst crime that the Top 100 did wasn’t the botched anniversary of the series, not the lackluster content, not even the laughable handling of a mini game selection with party mode, but the fact that Track n Yield uses the WRONG song Jazzy a MP6 song therefore we we’ll never get official remastered version of the banger of Keep It Up😢
MP9 and Island Tour were actually the first MParty games I played, so I never really had an issue with them in particular. (And yeah, this did mean that I never played the Hudson era stuff.) I also played Wii Party (which came from the same developers IIRC), which was pretty fun as well. Personally I think that NDCube does have potential when it comes to MParty game development, which we've already seen with the latest entries such as Jamboree. A rough start doesn't mean total doom.
I'm one of those people who prefers Island Tour to Super Mario Party and Mario Party 10, not that the latter is a high bar to cross but I think Island Tour has just as much passion put into it as Mario Party 9.
I actually really like Super Mario Party. It was the first game in the series that I had any exposure to, and I like how it handled the formula. I don’t care that the stars were cheaper or that there were only four boards (all of which I quite like) or that the characters were “too slow”; it was still a lot of fun. There are some older Mario Parties that outright bully the player and make them loose because of a random occurrence over any actual skill, hence why I enjoy the more sedate ones that let you learn what to do to win rather than letting the CPUs control your fate.
Hard disagree on bowser party being rigged in bowsers favor, in my many games bowser lost more often than not. A skilled player can easily avoid most damage in many of the minigames, and players get extra hearts all the time. Players that are knocked out get powerful items for the team, and they'll usually get revived before long. Taking out the final surviving player can be very hard. The reason bowser gets a lot of broken abilities like rerolling is that he need them to have a fighting chance. I'd say its a decently balanced mode overall, but the players have an advantage over bowser unless they get bad luck.
it's worth noting that someone really, really liked the choicest voice and made a fan game based on that side mode specifically because of how silly it is
Good video! I also played the 3DS games for the first time recently before Jamboree came out just to see how they were like, and uh, yeah, they weren't good. Star Rush is actually alright, but nothing really remarkable either. Out of these games the one I never played is MP10 and I honestly don't feel like ever playing it. If I had to complain about something in the video it'd be just the nonstop barrage of memes. You know how to express well your points in a fun and informative way, but dropping a meme every 10 seconds gets pretty annoying, you really don't need to be so reliant on those.
I actually like Star Rush. If Nintendo focused on Toad Scramble and Coinathlon instead of like 5 other modes then it could have been an unique and great Mario Party.

I felt dissappointed by all these games EXCEPT Star Rush. That one is actually great but it released sandwiched between lackluster titles, so nobody played it. Super gets credit for introducing character dice blocks and free roam boards when it was Super Rush, which proves that nobody played it, and it makes me sad.
I really love Mario Party 9! Island Tour is a weird case for me because of the boards. I can see potential in Star-Crossed Skyway (9 without the car), and also Kamek’s Carpet Ride and Shy Guy’s Shuffle City (cards to move). Maybe if the boards weren’t linear and the mechanics were combined to give strategy to the player? The other boards were either whatever or bad. 10 is also a weird case for me. The Mario Party mode is 9 again but with changes that make it either better or worse (you can ask me which ones), Bowser Party being fine but doesn’t use its potential enough, and amiibo Party is just a sin. Star Rush is less weird because of its two main boards. Yeah, I like Toad Scramble and Balloon Bash. I’m also glad Coinatholon came back in Jamboree. And the rest of the modes range from a joke to alright. (Also the character roster is almost perfect.) … Don’t bother with Top 100. I regret getting a copy.
I'm gonna be completely honest here, i personally think Super Mario Party is just as flawed, if not more than some of the "Dark Age Mario Party games", the main party mode being especially bad in this aspect: - the maps are extremely lackluster. they're all linear, tiny, and bland, the map design doesn't get more interesting than four smaller circles inside of a bigger circle and some of the gimmicks can rarely impactful enough to make them feel interesting. (also only having 4 maps, the least amount in the series, also doesn't help with the variety problems) - Lucky spaces being everywhere, Red/Unlucky spaces not being punishing nor common enough, items being very cheap, minigames giving coins to 2nd and 3rd as well, map gimmicks tied to coins not being nearly impactful enough, and stars being 10 coins instead of 20 just absolutely destroys the coin balance and leads to some predicable consequences strategy can feel a bit neutered since you don't have to think about coins at all that much for 90% of the game, the coins you get from minigames matter less than ever, people can rush to steal stars almost immediately, and people can just rush for golden pipes with little to no consequences, especially since items at shops remain largely static. - Only having 1-6 dice instead of 1-10 can make the game pacing feel very slow, even with the decreased board size, you can feel like you're not making much of any progress at all another thing that can make the game speed feel slow, are the many long, unskippable animations that can inflate game time, like the toadette slowly floating to the next star location every time someone gets the star (I especially hate how toad tips are shoved upon you every time you open the map for the first time) - Allies are stupidly broken, and can easily snowball into someone taking over the game by storm you can have up to 4 allies that all add onto your already existing roll ON TOP OF ITEMS which can give you a much higher chance of getting the star since you roll so far, allies also help you in minigames which can sometimes effectively guarantee you a win, there are also two bonus stars linked to allies (and since you're going super far with allies anyways, you're pretty much guaranteed to get the "rolling the farthest" bonus star anyways), AND you get their character specific dice as a cherry on top. the only downside is the fact that you can no longer roll a 0. that's literally it. genuinely ridiculous mechanic, even for mario party standards. To clarify, you can certainly still have fun with the game (just like 9, 10 and many others), it's just that I ultimately find it to be an overall very flawed mario party experience, which is disappointing since it was supposed to be "Back to Basics" thank you for listening to my Ted Talk
Honestly, I do really like Super Mario Party. I love the huge roster of characters, the wholesome feel and theme that it had, the side modes were really good and the mini games were top notch. That said, there's definitely no denying that it was really flawed. There were only 4 boards of play, which didn't give you a lot of variety or content. Allies were absolutely busted, and you could pretty much just buy and spam Golden Pipes to win, especially since items were so cheap. Though one could argue that being broken in itself isn't bad. Like fighting games, broken things can often be fun....until you're on the receiving end of it hehe XD.
I definitely don't disagree at all. I think Super was at least hopeful for people as it showed that NDcube was at least trying to figure out how to Mario that party but it was... A fumble. With a major lack of content issue. Like it felt like a game meant for free dlc that literally just never got it and that really damaged the game. And I think the overall minimalist style does the game a disservice. At least jamboree fixed most of the issues. I think it needs time to simmer before people form opinions, but it at least shaved a lot of the issues away

I think *Toad Scramble* is a little underrated. It can be really hard to come back from losing if someone gets ahead, and the minigame variety is extremely limited compared to literally every other _Mario Party_ (even the first game), but it's fun to race to the boss spaces while picking up resources and Allies along the way. I love the way you can get a massive crowd following you and boosting your dice rolls, especially the way they help out _in_ the boss battles. For all that they made _Super Mario Party_ an incredibly unbalanced mess, I will always have a soft spot for the way Allies were implemented. Shame that Partner Party was a less interesting take on Toad Scramble, in my opinion. Oh well. At least *Coinathlon* got to come back in _Jamboree, _*_and_* finally let you play it online. It was the only other mode from _Star Rush_ worth anyone's time.
I think new modes are fine as long as you add them as an option right to the boards for the traditional rules. Not necesarily they have to stick to one mode for the entire game. If some people just prefer the other, don't play that mode, but at least allow us to choose.
The real reason why fans say “3ds/wii u era was bad for Mario”, because outside of this,paper Mario,NSMB,and ultra smash, everything else coming from that era were still quality Mario games
Personally I like mp10 because it actually gave the car a purpose and that's to go against bowser and race to the finish without losing the entire team, plus I find it decently balanced, does it have it issues, yeah but personally I think every mario party has it's issues, plus even i like super and superstars but even they are flawed and superstars felt very experimental considering how little it offered
While Mario Party Advance may be guilty of doing the Car thing first, it's not *as* bad as Mario Party 9 and 10 for doing so. For one thing, it's a game focusing on a One-Player Campaign mode, similar to Mini-Game Island from Mario Party 1, Mini-Game Coaster from Mario Party 2, and Solo Mode from Mario Party 6; no other players, just you and the adventure. I mean, it may be flawed, but at least you don't have the share the embarassment with your friends. Not to mention, Mario Party DS would be the REAL last Mario Party game, at least for Hudson Soft. And to be perfectly honest on my opinion, if you're gonna make the players share the same car, Bowser Party would've been the most logical upgrade for how stupid and cryptic the standard mode was for both 9 and 10.

I've played all but top 100 so my thoughts: 9, main mode is a bit boring but i love the mini games they are great Island, main mode is also boring but the stranger mini games are interesting. 10, Bowser mode is fun but very unbalanced if you know even a bit of mp strategy Toad, the variety is great for a 3Ds game but its a very repetitive 48:57 yeah that's a perfect expectation of those 3 modes
This is an extremely well made video! Personally, I still think the series is in a dark age, though. It doesn't know what it wants to be anymore. Super started the trend of each game on the Switch having a horrid economy. Yes it was classic Mario Party gameplay but was also Mario Party at its very worst (yes, even worse than 9, not 10 though 10 just sucks). So many of the issues that got introduced in super are STILL a problem with Jamboree, despite their attempts to make their bad ideas work. Allies do not work with classic Mario Party. Jamboree Buddies are just Allies at their absolute worst, with broken bonuses that completely ruin the balance of the game. Superstars, while a good game on its own merits, is pure and simple nostalgia bait. The game has only 5 boards, and only ONE of those boards is from 3. So many of Superstars' issues stem from the fact that the game wants to be Mario Party 1 so bad instead of taking inspiration from the actual good N64 title (which is 3. No hate to 2 but it's overrated.) It sucks to see that the issue of pandering to N64 fans is still an issue in Jamboree, with no love for 3 in the slightest. Jamboree tries to mash up all of the best parts from the Hudson games and the early NDCube games and kind of just doesn't do well with any of them imo? Traps are back but they are at their absolute worst, allies are back but they are at their absolute worst, story mode is back but it's a nothingburger, minigame sidemodes are back but they neglect to add in the series staples (decathalon). I wanted to like Jamboree and I wanted to like this new era of Mario Party. I really did. But the only title I truly enjoyed my time with was Superstars (despite its flaws). I want to say Mario Party is back, but I simply cannot say that while maintaining a good conscience. I hope NintendoCube gets their shit together. Fix the economy for one maybe?

You don’t even fucking bother elaborating or explaining WHY traps are at “their absolute worst” in Jamboree. Also, no the ally mechanic isn’t worse in Jamboree than it is in SMP, that’s just flat out bullshit because Jamboree literally gives out multiple nerfs to the allies by making them last only 3 turns both on the board and with you, another player can take them away from you by simply passing by, you can only get one at a time, and you get double the negatives when you land on a bad space with an ally, all of this unlike SMP where you could literally get multiple allies that break the boards. I personally hope Nintendo Cube never listens to “fans” like you because you just hate literally every fucking new game to come out without slightest hint of remorse.

To me, all of those games are the best mario parties, mostly because i grew up playing them and not the hudson games(besides ds, my faborite mario party). It also made me not really care about the board gameplay, only minigame modes(and toad scramble. I love toad scramble)

Well considering the NDCude is made up of former Hudson Soft devs, It's pretty easy to see that they just wanted to do something different and experiment. Making the same game over and over again will surely not get exhausting or depressing.

Yeah, the reason super Mario party is so bad is probably just because it doesn’t try to do anything different.

The hate towards island tour is insane, I’m such a huge fan of the game
I felt dissappointed by all these games EXCEPT Star Rush. That one is actually great but it released sandwiched between lackluster titles, so nobody played it. Super gets credit for introducing character dice blocks and free roam boards when it was Super Rush, which proves that nobody played it, and it makes me sad.
Super did it in a Home console, while SR is barely known

Island Tour is a weird case for me because of the boards. I can see potential in Star-Crossed Skyway (9 without the car), and also Kamek’s Carpet Ride and Shy Guy’s Shuffle City (cards to move). Maybe if the boards weren’t linear and the mechanics were combined to give strategy to the player? The other boards were either whatever or bad.
10 is also a weird case for me. The Mario Party mode is 9 again but with changes that make it either better or worse (you can ask me which ones), Bowser Party being fine but doesn’t use its potential enough, and amiibo Party is just a sin.
Star Rush is less weird because of its two main boards. Yeah, I like Toad Scramble and Balloon Bash. I’m also glad Coinatholon came back in Jamboree. And the rest of the modes range from a joke to alright.
(Also the character roster is almost perfect.)

I'm gonna be completely honest here, i personally think Super Mario Party is just as flawed, if not more than some of the "Dark Age Mario Party games", the main party mode being especially bad in this aspect:
- the maps are extremely lackluster. they're all linear, tiny, and bland, the map design doesn't get more interesting than four smaller circles inside of a bigger circle and some of the gimmicks can rarely impactful enough to make them feel interesting. (also only having 4 maps, the least amount in the series, also doesn't help with the variety problems)
- Lucky spaces being everywhere, Red/Unlucky spaces not being punishing nor common enough, items being very cheap, minigames giving coins to 2nd and 3rd as well, map gimmicks tied to coins not being nearly impactful enough, and stars being 10 coins instead of 20 just absolutely destroys the coin balance and leads to some predicable consequences
strategy can feel a bit neutered since you don't have to think about coins at all that much for 90% of the game, the coins you get from minigames matter less than ever, people can rush to steal stars almost immediately, and people can just rush for golden pipes with little to no consequences, especially since items at shops remain largely static.
- Only having 1-6 dice instead of 1-10 can make the game pacing feel very slow, even with the decreased board size, you can feel like you're not making much of any progress at all
another thing that can make the game speed feel slow, are the many long, unskippable animations that can inflate game time, like the toadette slowly floating to the next star location every time someone gets the star (I especially hate how toad tips are shoved upon you every time you open the map for the first time)
- Allies are stupidly broken, and can easily snowball into someone taking over the game by storm
you can have up to 4 allies that all add onto your already existing roll ON TOP OF ITEMS which can give you a much higher chance of getting the star since you roll so far, allies also help you in minigames which can sometimes effectively guarantee you a win, there are also two bonus stars linked to allies (and since you're going super far with allies anyways, you're pretty much guaranteed to get the "rolling the farthest" bonus star anyways), AND you get their character specific dice as a cherry on top.
the only downside is the fact that you can no longer roll a 0. that's literally it.
genuinely ridiculous mechanic, even for mario party standards.
To clarify, you can certainly still have fun with the game (just like 9, 10 and many others), it's just that I ultimately find it to be an overall very flawed mario party experience, which is disappointing since it was supposed to be "Back to Basics"

Honestly, I do really like Super Mario Party. I love the huge roster of characters, the wholesome feel and theme that it had, the side modes were really good and the mini games were top notch. That said, there's definitely no denying that it was really flawed. There were only 4 boards of play, which didn't give you a lot of variety or content. Allies were absolutely busted, and you could pretty much just buy and spam Golden Pipes to win, especially since items were so cheap. Though one could argue that being broken in itself isn't bad. Like fighting games, broken things can often be fun....until you're on the receiving end of it hehe XD.
I definitely don't disagree at all. I think Super was at least hopeful for people as it showed that NDcube was at least trying to figure out how to Mario that party but it was... A fumble. With a major lack of content issue. Like it felt like a game meant for free dlc that literally just never got it and that really damaged the game. And I think the overall minimalist style does the game a disservice.
At least jamboree fixed most of the issues. I think it needs time to simmer before people form opinions, but it at least shaved a lot of the issues away
To be fair, Jamboree is also pretty slow, especially the mall map

I think *Toad Scramble* is a little underrated. It can be really hard to come back from losing if someone gets ahead, and the minigame variety is extremely limited compared to literally every other _Mario Party_ (even the first game), but it's fun to race to the boss spaces while picking up resources and Allies along the way. I love the way you can get a massive crowd following you and boosting your dice rolls, especially the way they help out _in_ the boss battles. For all that they made _Super Mario Party_ an incredibly unbalanced mess, I will always have a soft spot for the way Allies were implemented.
Shame that Partner Party was a less interesting take on Toad Scramble, in my opinion.
Oh well. At least *Coinathlon* got to come back in _Jamboree, _*_and_* finally let you play it online. It was the only other mode from _Star Rush_ worth anyone's time.

I think new modes are fine as long as you add them as an option right to the boards for the traditional rules. Not necesarily they have to stick to one mode for the entire game. If some people just prefer the other, don't play that mode, but at least allow us to choose.

Personally I like mp10 because it actually gave the car a purpose and that's to go against bowser and race to the finish without losing the entire team, plus I find it decently balanced, does it have it issues, yeah but personally I think every mario party has it's issues, plus even i like super and superstars but even they are flawed and superstars felt very experimental considering how little it offered
While Mario Party Advance may be guilty of doing the Car thing first, it's not *as* bad as Mario Party 9 and 10 for doing so. For one thing, it's a game focusing on a One-Player Campaign mode, similar to Mini-Game Island from Mario Party 1, Mini-Game Coaster from Mario Party 2, and Solo Mode from Mario Party 6; no other players, just you and the adventure. I mean, it may be flawed, but at least you don't have the share the embarassment with your friends. Not to mention, Mario Party DS would be the REAL last Mario Party game, at least for Hudson Soft. And to be perfectly honest on my opinion, if you're gonna make the players share the same car, Bowser Party would've been the most logical upgrade for how stupid and cryptic the standard mode was for both 9 and 10.

I've played all but top 100 so my thoughts:
9, main mode is a bit boring but i love the mini games they are great
Island, main mode is also boring but the stranger mini games are interesting.
10, Bowser mode is fun but very unbalanced if you know even a bit of mp strategy
Toad, the variety is great for a 3Ds game but its a very repetitive

This is an extremely well made video! Personally, I still think the series is in a dark age, though. It doesn't know what it wants to be anymore.
Super started the trend of each game on the Switch having a horrid economy. Yes it was classic Mario Party gameplay but was also Mario Party at its very worst (yes, even worse than 9, not 10 though 10 just sucks). So many of the issues that got introduced in super are STILL a problem with Jamboree, despite their attempts to make their bad ideas work. Allies do not work with classic Mario Party. Jamboree Buddies are just Allies at their absolute worst, with broken bonuses that completely ruin the balance of the game.
Superstars, while a good game on its own merits, is pure and simple nostalgia bait. The game has only 5 boards, and only ONE of those boards is from 3. So many of Superstars' issues stem from the fact that the game wants to be Mario Party 1 so bad instead of taking inspiration from the actual good N64 title (which is 3. No hate to 2 but it's overrated.) It sucks to see that the issue of pandering to N64 fans is still an issue in Jamboree, with no love for 3 in the slightest.
Jamboree tries to mash up all of the best parts from the Hudson games and the early NDCube games and kind of just doesn't do well with any of them imo? Traps are back but they are at their absolute worst, allies are back but they are at their absolute worst, story mode is back but it's a nothingburger, minigame sidemodes are back but they neglect to add in the series staples (decathalon).
I wanted to like Jamboree and I wanted to like this new era of Mario Party. I really did. But the only title I truly enjoyed my time with was Superstars (despite its flaws). I want to say Mario Party is back, but I simply cannot say that while maintaining a good conscience. I hope NintendoCube gets their shit together. Fix the economy for one maybe?

You don’t even fucking bother elaborating or explaining WHY traps are at “their absolute worst” in Jamboree. Also, no the ally mechanic isn’t worse in Jamboree than it is in SMP, that’s just flat out bullshit because Jamboree literally gives out multiple nerfs to the allies by making them last only 3 turns both on the board and with you, another player can take them away from you by simply passing by, you can only get one at a time, and you get double the negatives when you land on a bad space with an ally, all of this unlike SMP where you could literally get multiple allies that break the boards.
I personally hope Nintendo Cube never listens to “fans” like you because you just hate literally every fucking new game to come out without slightest hint of remorse.

To me, all of those games are the best mario parties, mostly because i grew up playing them and not the hudson games(besides ds, my faborite mario party). It also made me not really care about the board gameplay, only minigame modes(and toad scramble. I love toad scramble)
