If they want to marry first cousins thats fine just do it in a muslim country the British find it disgusting and puts unnecessary pressure on the NHS treating these poor little children
You do realise it is legal in the UK from Henry the 8th time. Whether good or bad it's here. I think he wrote the law to get a male child from a close member of the royal family. More to do with power and consolidation than anything. Which is why certain families encourage it.
I wonder if any of these people in cousin marriages ever considered artificial insemination from a donor within their ethnicity, but genetically unrelated.
I've got a Bangladeshi friend, that married one of his cousins but she ran off when she came here and got Westernised after seeing how women are treated differently here. This mate of mines family has always married into each other. His sister is mute and he has a deformed hand so there is medical truth in this.
If it's an arranged marriage where a British born woman is coerced to marry a cousin from another country, just to get them into Britain that is terrible.
Its not about strengthening the family it is about retaining wealth in the family, I work with a lot of South Asians and that's what they tell me it's all about the land and the gold staying in house
They have asked their cousins within Bradford NHS to come out in support of inbreeding in a weak attempt to cancel the plausible argument of birth defects.
As an American, I am surprised to hear that many or most people did not know this was an issue in the UK. I went to University in England in the 1980’s, and I knew about it then. I had classmates whose parents were first cousins or were being pressured to marry their first cousins. What is not talked about in this reporting is how these marriages are multi-generational. Going back generations my classmates ancestors were first or second cousins. The reasoning was very tribal-one could count on their family in times of crisis. The State (their country)? Not so much. This is why they don’t integrate with society as a whole. The general fear of what may happen in a crisis. An Iranian student said to me she knew that as a Roman Catholic I wasn’t allowed to marry my first cousin. I told her no, that marrying my first cousin was illegal in my state in the US. (24 US states in is illegal-many others have restrictions). I will NEVER forget the shocked look on her face when I said “illegal”. She is the one who came from multiple generations of first cousins (including parents) and was being pressured to marry her first cousin. Edit: This student and her family all lived in England. She was born in England but was of Persian ancestry.
I just asked my fifteen year old son if he would marry one of his 2 female cousins, i used their names, he looked at me with a look of sheer horror and disgust, which says it all really doesnt it? I asked as it would be a reaction from someone who had never heard of it and it would be a natural reqction to the idea
It’s more likely it’s because the very idea of marrying the cousin they spent their childhood calling names and playing Lego and football with is sickening to them!
Another things that I've just though of, if that disabled person has kids with their cousins it was damn further generations of their families to torment as these health issues/deformities will get progressively worse further down the road.
I worked in the Middle East for many years. Quite common to see male friends walking hand in hand. Rear gunners abounded because they were not permitted to socialise with females.
They put sub Sahara with this practice, which is actually frowned upon in most Sub Saharan countries. It’s more of a religious practice rather than cultural.
Mother of God!!! Just when you think it can't get any more mental, it does !!! A totally ridiculous statement, one can reasonably expect better from our NHS 😢😢😢😢
I am from Bradford and see the disabled kids being taken out and about in their wheelchairs by council carers and no it's not alright for cousin marriages.
It’s not just costing the NHS, these children need 1to1s at school. The number in schools that are taking up teachers time and often get private buses to school the council pays for this.
It is horrible. I'm all for people doing what they want to do but not! if someone else will get hurt. Babies don't deserve defects because of some ridiculous cultural normal.
This practice is falling for 2nd/3rd generation immigrant children in the UK..... But because the government opened the borders to all it will go back on the increase
Some Queer theorists are advancing the acceptabilbity of incest. They rejct all boundaries, including the adult child boundary, and the parent child boundary. Ryan Thornycroft, in an academic paper, Cripping Incest, qutes from Judith Butler. He writes, "I am also reminded of Butler’s (2004: 157) comment that: ‘I keep adding this qualification: “when incest is a violation,” suggesting that I think that there may be occasions in which it is not’. If violence does transpire, it is ‘by virtue of the consciousness of social shame’" (Butler 2004: 157). I think that this will be another Woke project!
I agree this needs addressing, as does the huge issue of babies born with foetal alcohol syndrome, hooked on opiates etc. we appear to be a sick and dying society.
but there are people who’ve given birth after the age of 35 and their children have came out completely fine. The comparisons don’t seem to make sense to me 🤷🏼♀️ and in anyways 35 isn’t too old to have your first child. Yes you’ll probably have some complications but that comes with every pregnancy. This is why I’m saying like I don’t get the comparisons because they’re not the same thing.
My daughter had both her children when she was in her late thirties and they are fine. So did a lot of her friends. Girls marry later nowadays. My cousin had a Down's Syndrome child when she was in her early thirties so age does not necessarily have anything to do with it.
@0:20 Yep, then parliament was created so that those in power could create laws to do exactly the same as Henry VIII. Hence the creation of the House of Lords.
Henry viii didn't marry his first cousin. Henry's 5th wife, Catherine Howard, was first cousin to Henry's second wife, Anne Boleyn. The Catholic church made no difference to a blood cousin and a spouse cousin.
In an ideal world this is something than should be stopped. For the health of our own people at the very least. Unfortunately having it as a marriage ban is not going to work as people will still have sex and baby’s will still be made! Education in schools is the only way we can sort this!
If you willingly partake in dangerous pursuits, such as mountaineering, cave exploring etc, then you should be made to pay should you need to be rescued. Likewise, if you know there's a very high risk of having children with serious, life long medical issues by marrying your 1st cousin, you should have to pay for any medical treatment, NOT the taxpayers via the NHS. In short, take responsibility and pay for your own mistakes, in full. 😠
Those doing the comparing might like to compare their current job to the one they should be getting when asked to leave for bringing the service in to disrepute .
There has been a online petition for the banning of cousin marriage running since last year and only about 50 people have signed . Its easy to find why not add your name?
We learned that these marriages are disastrous. There's no future with poor disabled adults ..all trades, caring professionals, shop workers will disappear..as they are unemployable So no
Please can discussions be on topics such as increasing prices, cost of living, living standards, education, tuition fees, illegal immigrants, NHS etc Why can’t we get our priorities right ? 😢 really sad….
If a women waits till she is 36 its normally when she is in a decent financial situation and has a steady job and partner to have children she's doing a sensible thing rather than rushing into a situation No comparison
Everybody have their own choice to marry with someone my parents are cousin but we all are good and healthy I don’t know why peoples are in uk doing that
Stop calling it cousin marriage and call it incest cos that’s what it is
This MP's peers should have stood up an ridiculed him and continue to do so. Marrying and having a child with a first cousin is degenerate.
What's so horrible is that these "cousins" that are being married off are small children so they can be @bused by older men. So gross
It's incest, you don't sleep with your relatives, full stop, shouldn't even be thinking of debating this at all
But not if your a Royal why do you think they are all so stupid?
@tonyhogan6905 that was like 200 years ago. We're talking about the present. Catch up.

I cannot believe that in this day and age we are ACTUALLY discussing this, it's disgusting
We need to address it . Ignoring it would be silent acceptance
When is this lunacy going to end? Why are we expected to tolerate this?
If they want to marry first cousins thats fine just do it in a muslim country the British find it disgusting and puts unnecessary pressure on the NHS treating these poor little children

So many babies disabled at birth due to cousin marriages That leaves the state to care for these people for the rest of heir lives
So, should assortative breeding also be banned?
Here we go again THIS IS NOT OUR CULTURE
I've got a Bangladeshi friend, that married one of his cousins but she ran off when she came here and got Westernised after seeing how women are treated differently here. This mate of mines family has always married into each other. His sister is mute and he has a deformed hand so there is medical truth in this.
My English cousin married his cousin and their eldest child was both mentally and physically disabled. This was over 80 years ago.
Are you a member of the Royal Family? 🙂
No….this should not even being discussed….if these people want to do this then leave and go to a country where they apply this 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Because the NHS has unlimited money, time and resources for these people, right?
It's incest! We grow up with our cousins, we don't sleep with them 🤦🏻♀️
FGM and forced marriage are cultural - are they saying that these will be ok too?
If it's an arranged marriage where a British born woman is coerced to marry a cousin from another country, just to get them into Britain that is terrible.
Probably money crosses palms.
Its disgusting.
They know that Westerners find it repulsive, yet they still do it and openly think its ok 🤢
This shows that they have no shame
It's legal in Sweden too, even brother-sister half-siblings.
The royals and aristocracy still do this
And what's even worse is that they know the genetic health risks, yet do it anyway. It shows they don't truly care about their kids.
If you want to practice this, go to the countries that allow it
A cousin marriage is bad enough, but this is multiple generations of cousin marriages. It should be banned, no question about it.
Its not about strengthening the family it is about retaining wealth in the family, I work with a lot of South Asians and that's what they tell me it's all about the land and the gold staying in house
Any defective results from this disgusting practice should not become a burden on the NHS.
But it will!!!
Disgraceful that this has even been talked about in parliament
Let 1st cousins marry when she's been sterilised & he's had a vasectomy!😅
They have asked their cousins within Bradford NHS to come out in support of inbreeding in a weak attempt to cancel the plausible argument of birth defects.
I'm fed up with being forced to pay for the NHS and BBC.
Where are these MP's coming from? The 12th Century?
Even further back.
The disgust on her face says it all 😂😂

Cousins? That truly is disgusting. We frown on that in the US where it's illegal.
Only in certain states-not all.
Yes and its about keeping the wealth in the family,
1st Cousin marriage is so very bad, why take a risk with your baby.❤
First it starts with
first cousins next it's child marriage.
What you people never hear of lil 6 year old aisha.
What's next child marriages ?
Too late -already here
It used to be " popular " to smoke cigarettes. 😂😂😂😂😂
Ashamed of nothing !!!
Sick disgusting 🤮
Funny how we also had to bring in a law 30 years ago to make FGM a specific offence and also another about forced marriage. I wonder why that was?
I just asked my fifteen year old son if he would marry one of his 2 female cousins, i used their names, he looked at me with a look of sheer horror and disgust, which says it all really doesnt it? It's an innate reaction. And it's meant to ensure genetic diversity for healthy offspring.
Even though its legal, most people don't do it on moral grounds.
It’s more likely it’s because the very idea of marrying the cousin they spent their childhood calling names and playing Lego and football with is sickening to them!
Not all culture are equal. Interested to see the % of that group who work in the NHS.
FGM is quite poppular as well.
No more comparison whatsoever, they're just paving the way to allow it , shocking

Yes ultimately its self-limiting.
@krissymarklewis1793. Its really becoming noticeable now.
I worked in the Middle East for many years. Quite common to see male friends walking hand in hand. Rear gunners abounded because they were not permitted to socialise with females.
The way parents in certain cultures control their children using religion as a reason is very sad .We need to help these people.
@Wrestlingsaveslives. I agree, especially the women and children.
HORRENDOUS

If 1st Cousins are allowed to marry, are half brothers/sisters also allowed to marry as one parent is different?
Interesting. I'm no scientist but I think it would be something to do with how genes are passed down that may cause an issue, morally speaking or not.
obviously no

Yes it would have required a papal dispensation had he still been Catholic but England legalized incest in 1540
