Yeah, this is a fast track to the US system of a for profit health system due to pre-existing conditions. NHS is for all. I think a better thing here, is that if you are a foreigner and marry your cousin after the law comes into practice, then it's prison or depotation as it's a criminal act at that point.

Unfortunately you cannot say that cousin marriages WILL result in children with birth defects, all we can say is that they MAY have problems.
It's the same with people who play sports, let's say rugby, you run unto the pitch knowing you may get injured and hope you don't, but if you do you want the NHS to treat you, so why shouldn't people expect the NHS to treat the unfortunate results of their close family marriages?
Blair once said education, education education. As his government sent out feelers across the third world inviting people to chance their arms in coming to Britain so should this government send out education on the risks of cousin marriages, and hope the young girls get to hear that there is a strong chance they will be loaded with badly disabled children to cope with.

Screening for birth defects should be at the expense of the parents if this involves First Cousin Marriages in the UK.
The MP stated that Saudi Arabia screens however this is a very wealthy nation . In Asian and Middle Eastern countries most likely it is the wealthy couples that can afford it. The poor and illiterate do not have that advantage and live with superstition or blind faith.
I live NZ and my ancestors came from Ireland, Scotland, England and Canada in the 1860s and 1870s.
Their intermarriage meant they could create a new life for themselves not forgetting where they born but starting new blood ties away from their village, towns and cities in the British Isles.

There is a major difference between the occasional cousin marriage in a family and between to the cultural insistence that family members should intermarry. There are genetic reasons why this should discouraged. Anyone who breeds animals knows that inbreeding will eventually lead to a terminal blood line. Any inherited issues are double and doubled so that a whole large family becomes blighted. There is a wider incidence of heart, kidney and eye problems in groups who regularly intermarry and that is ignoring the incidence of mental disability. It means that resource in the NHS and the benefit system are sucked up but groups whose children suffer because of this particular practice.

There are a lot of obscure recessive genes that cause various debilitating syndromes, being carried in families. They can be random, but marrying your cousin means you are more likely to get that genetic match (you need a pair to show up the recessive gene)

I don't think the state should have any say on who you marry, but if you're intentionally having children through incest, there should be penalties. What those penalties are is of course debateable as you don't want to by proxy punish the child. People are too afraid to say it; disabled children are a burden to the state and peers.
