  • Fuzz can be a bit of a minefield. Where do you even start?!
    Disclaimer: I wanted the intro jam to have a bit of a Deep Purple feel but in retrospect, it ended up sounding a bit like a pirate metal band...apologies!

    One of Hendrix’s main use of a fuzz was to set it fairly high, into a driven amp and then dial back the guitar volume to clean it up. Gives an amazing clean tone that is impossible to get straight to the amp.

    • @ultimadum7785
      @ultimadum7785 3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @50Something

    A very tasteful display of the use of fuzz. Some of the magic occurs when you lower the volume knob on the guitar, especially with the Fuzz face. The jams are mesmerizing!

    • @ultimadum7785
      @ultimadum7785 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! I think most people just turn their guitar volume to ten and when it sounds bad, they say they hate fuzz.

  • @fishypaw

    Keith Richards said in an interview that the fuzz track on "Satisfaction" was meant to be a placeholder for some horns that he wanted to be included, but the record company in a rush to get a single out, released it with the fuzz instead of horns. Keith only found out when he heard the song on the radio. So it was a lucky "accident" that changed guitar history.
    I'm a big Hendrix fan, so I love the Fuzz Face (the blue silicon transistor one), but I also have a reissue Octavio, and have read that Jimi's tech would mod the Octavio fuzz circuit and put them in Fuzz Face enclosures. I recently did the same mod to my Octavio, and it sounds amazing, when it's just in fuzz mode (minus the octave effect). Both the Fuzz Face and modded Octavio do a great job of recreating a Jimi fuzz tone. Big Muff is a great pedal too, and always on my practice pedal board. One of these days I'll get a Tone Bender, then I'll have the "set".
    P.S. The outro tune. "I Want You (she's so heavy)" was the perfect choice for this subject. :)

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve been saving for the Ramble FX Twin Bender V3, as it just has the options I want in a Tone Bender.
      I’ve used a JHF1 from 2008ish, for my Fuzz Face, even after trying a myriad of others. I just can’t get the same cleanup and feel from others, not to mention how it stacks with the OD’s I use.
      If I only had one dirt pedal to use, it would be the one. I’m just so used to it.
      If I had the disposable income, I’d definitely try out the new Vemuram Myriad made with Josh Smith, but it’s a $500 pedal new, and I just don’t do a Wet/Dry setup that would justify it. I got to play a buddy’s basic version(the $300 one), and it sounded excellent, so maybe I’ll try it again one day. It has a Germanium and Silicon circuits, and it’s cleanup was sweet, with all the gain as well. But every Germanium transistor Fuzz pedal I’ve owned, even with a bias knob, still get weird depending on temperature. Sometimes the bias can get it back to normal, but then it will change again the longer it’s played.
      Wonder if Chris will get one of those new ones from Benson?

    Without the Chris Buck module, I'm out! What a great intro/overview into the fun, crazy world of fuzz. I've dallied for nearly 40 years with them and only in the last 10 or so when I eschewed my 80s roots did I star to get it. Chris is spot on, its a deep hole and can get rather overwhelming but this was a great high level idea of the origin and tone possibilities that make fuzz so unique. Well done Chris!

    new player here and before hearing elsewhere I came to using my fuzz with the guitar volume rolled back as I have a Deville 410 at home and have small kids, Its a special sound to my ear having that volume rolled back cleaning that sputter up and smoothing out the tone. I prefer it with my tele too over my Les Paul where I find it more difficult to deminish the wollyness. Cheers, see you again next Friday.

    Chris, thanks for that great breakdown of fuzz pedals. I have been fighting the battle for quite some time now and have been through a bucket load of fuzz pedals trying to find the right one for my board setup, my amplifier choice and even the guitar/pickups I choose. Fuzz is truly an untamed animal that needs much research to come to the best conclusion for your gear and style. I myself have planted firmly on the Tone Bender style (for germanium), whereas I tried desperately to make the Fuzz Face work, but it just keeps coming out behind for me. As for non-Ge, I have gone with an Op-Amp Muff which has (in my opinion) the widest range of tonality of all of the choices of BM.
    Your playing is so tasteful and well thought out that I put you in a Bonamassa class for originality and flavor.
    Keep up the good fight... Your knowledge and talent is well appreciated!
    Cheers!!!

    The Big Muff story illustrates how incestuous early fuzz design was. ☺️ Mike Matthews was initially contracted in 1968 to make a fuzz using the Mosrite Fuzzrite circuit. Mosrite had just gone bankrupt, and so Mike took over production. The Fuzzrite was a two-knobber based on…the Maestro Fuzz Tone! The first generation Guild Foxey Lady was simply a rebranded Fuzzrite. There are pics of Jimi Hendrix in the studio with a two-knob Foxey Lady sitting on the floor nearby.
    Matthews and Bob Myer soon decided to take their idea for a clean sustain pedal and combine it with fuzz-style clipping , and the Big Muff Pi was born. The three-knob Foxey Lady is really just a v1 Big Muff with Guild branding. Hendrix is supposed to have owned an early one, whether branded Big Muff or Foxey Lady, but there’s no photographic evidence of it.
