Boss were considered the absolute business in the 80s and 90s. And then everyone wanted retro styled stuff with silly names and Boss were looked down on. People were spending a small fortune on pedals to replicate sounds that were probably recorded with Boss pedals in the first place. Nice to see people have come back around to how good they are. And bulletproof as well.

Sick intro solo. Blues driver has always been that do it all sleeper pedal for me. I like to mess around with different tones a lot I’m always on the road so I have to travel light can’t bring my whole board. This one blues driver pedal covers almost everything it’s one of those people take for granted 100%. Glad someone in the world sees what I see!

    • @michael1

Nah tone's in the fingers. To prove it I set up my guitar and played along with Chris in his video. I put my pick down. No difference in tone. Then I removed my pedals. No difference in tone. I took the strings off my guitar. No difference in tone. I removed the pickups. No difference in tone. I removed the lead from the guitar. No difference in tone. I put the guitar down. Still I could hear the same tone as I moved my fingers Then I realised I had the pod xt set to 'tuner' and it was Chris's guitar that I could hear.

Boss, MXR, Electro Harmonics are all in the house of Iconic pedal enclosures. And almost equally. They all kind of came in a wave in the 70s. At least if you lived in America can't speak for the UK or elsewhere. Very interesting that both MXR and EH are from New York state. Rochester and NYC. The MXR distortion Plus was the first big od pedal everyone wanted in my world. Boss was an "economy" brand from Japan like the first cars from there. And like the cars, proved to be well worth it. May the precision and clarity of Japan never succumb to cultural rot.

I cannot comment for Brother Nelson, but my impression was/is: Prince was not a gear-hound; he'd be the first one to admit to it: so...he used a lot of BOSS pedals...not due to a lot of A/B comparisons....I think he just grabbed whatever was popular; readily available. He was far more into creativity, than seeking some glorious...difficult to find guitar tone; he didn't even like to disclose what he was using because he wanted fans/guitar players to find their own sound and not copy him. That's my take on it, as a long-time fan, but certainly not a knock on BOSS; "iconic" indeed. Bless you and thank you, Chris, for the musical inspiration.

Vintage snobs piss me off. They act like only gear made before 1970 is capable of delivering great tone. Chris, you are an inspiration to players who are trying to realize their voice without spending loads of cash on their tone. We all want cool amps and guitars, but knowing how much comes from the player's mind and hands is made more evident by using readily accessible gear.

Love your playing and I never comment but I just wanted to address that intro tone. Your tone is always great and instantly recognizable. Not sure what pedals give you that creamy, mid-focused tone that you usually dial in on these videos. Maybe it's just a by-product of using a tone to cut through the mix in your shows. This tone, though, is the most different I've heard from you in a while. It's open and clear. Really dig it.

For an example of how John Mayer used the BD2: During the JM Trio era, on the official video of WDYTIW, JM used the Keeley BD-2 for the rhythm tone of "Who Did You Think I Was"; you can actually hear in the official video of the song that there is more definition to the notes, as well as more bass compared to a TS based overdriven rhythm sound (he then adds the TS808 for the solo parts). There are also a couple of videos of some TV shows performances where you can see JM stepping on the BD-2 before starting playing the song live. It is 100% the Keeley BD-2. Having said that, it is true that in live performances after the Trio era JM used a TS for the rhythm parts of WDYTIW. The BD-2 is actually an amazing pedal for pushing a clean sound a bit, and it stacks incredibly well with a TS.
