Ok, first and foremost. In my expereince you have, by far, THE best video production and presentation of your content I have ever expereinced. It's such a "comfortable" pleasure to watch your videos. You speak well, you are professional, you don't have a bunch of intro crap with music and funky logos. You look professional, clean, polished and again, you speak very clearly and very well.
I don't do video, I don't know much about doing video, but what I do know is that it's so nice when the audio of your speaking is so well done. It's clear, it's not full of cheap sounding echo, you're not screaming into the microphone, it just sounds very pleasing.
When you break things down it's very simple and to the point, it's just all so good. As you know, there's a LOT of photography educator channels here. I only wish you would do more of the photo breakdowns. :)
The parts where you allow the live video on location are good for the context. You even call out the screaming and yelling part LOL! Maybe not include so much of that because your other voice and talk is much more pleasing to hear. I get it though and I also think the live audio needs to be there just maybe not quite as much... LOL!

This is so similar to the way I shoot! I love my 85 because I can find one good tree and blur out everything else that isn't so pretty. It great. Definitely hard to get a good shot of the little baby though with things falling on her face :(

I love how you broke that down to bring out all the elements. I have a question about your using your 85mm here. So you said the background wouldn't have been as creamy with your 24-70 or 20-70, and I get that. What about using a 70-200mm lenstho? Is the 70-200 lens as creamy at 85mm as the 85mm lens? Thanks!
Good tips. Thank you. I changed my focusing to the back button and have reassigned some of the buttons so I am practicing and trying to figure out how I can best work with the custom settings. Sometimes I forget to focus.

VERY HELPFUL TIPS! I'm a Nikon guy, and although my most used lens is the 24-70mm zoom lens, I also have a 55mm macro lens that I use for portraits by
cropping it down to 1.2x, effectively making it an 85mm perspective! Whatever works is whatever works! LOL Thanks for this video! HG

Love the idea! Thank you for the good explaination and tips. Can you share what kind of lens filter youre using for your 85mm?
2:27 in this image you are at F1.6 with the whole family in the photo, I’m assuming you did this to isolate the little girl with her father instead of having them all in focus with a higher F stop? I’m asking because I don’t do this professionally and while the photo looks great I don’t know what a typical customer would want in a situation like this. For practice I’ve offered to take family photos of my neighbors family in the fall and just trying to get a better understanding of how to approach things. They older kids that are in their early to mid teenage years.
Oh and by the way I finally bought the RF 70-200 F2.8 and it’s awesome….I haven’t owned many lenses in my life because as I said I’m not a pro I’m any way, shape or form BUT wanted to say thank you for your previous replies to my comments and helping in my decision making for this lens! My wife doesn’t quite understand they why for wanting different lenses so this is probably it for me with lenses for the next few years along with my EF 24-70 F4 and EF nifty fifty. I hope this doesn’t make my wife sound bad or controlling because she isn’t in any way 😂.

Katelyn, I love that you leave the imperfections and bloops in your videos. You don't have to but you let us see your mistakes and it's so human. I just love it and I love you! Also, yes, family photographers look/sound like idiots all the time but we get the shots and so it's all worth it!

Beautiful work! Katelyn, I see you were shooting at 1.6 and 2.0...does the distance required with the 85mm ensure on some level that all people in the image will be in focus? That is just scary to me, shooting at that F stop! (Oh, and don't worry, I make those sounds, too, when trying to get little ones to look! HAHA!)
You are right Pam. The further away the better but it makes more sense to get the framing right and then use a narrower aperture to get the subject in focus. check out www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html - Pick any full frame camera, enter 85mm f2 and 4 meters to calculate 0.26m depth. At f1.2 that becomes only 0.15m. At 5m away the depth increases to 0.41 - hope that helps some
Can I ask what time of the morning you shot this? I have a 9 AM shoot mid August here on Saturday because my evening is booked and I can’t do an evening shoot. It’s a senior boy any tips greatly appreciate it, I really wanna nail the lighting
Heyy katelyn. i wanted to see the RAW pictures in lightroom. the thing is u have shot the pics at f2.0 , i wanted to see whether the subjects have sharp focus or not. i have asked the same thing in ur past vidoes too :)

Hi great video. Just wondering why is the iso set at 250? Wouldn't 100 give you just a little less noise whilst keeping a high enough shutter time? Or are there clear benefits in keeping such a high shuttertime? Thanks
(obviously I am not KJ but here are my thoughts): Noise at ISO 250 would be negligible on this camera body. Sometimes bumping your ISO a touch can allow you to shoot in aperture priority without having to worry about the camera selecting an inappropriate shutter speed. Or you may shoot in manual with auto-ISO and it may jump around a bit as the light changes slightly. If you've exposed correctly with your aperture and shutter speed the ISO often isn't a concern and can allow for more flexibility without having to adjust your settings every frame or two. As long as the light hasn't changed dramatically it isn't like the camera would go to ISO 6400 or something without you noticing.
Not sure if she intended or if coincidence, but the ISO 250 actually has an advantage vs lower ISO on the R6. It has something to do with how the newer body manages it. Just search ISO settings in TH-cam for more.
Why did you keep changing the aperture in the beginning?
Why not use the 28-70 all the way in? Trying to decide if I should also get an 85mm. Is that extra 10mm going to make that big of a difference? Great work as always!

How is it that you can shoot so wide open and still get everyone in focus? Someone please explain this to me. I took my three kids out yesterday to practice and even getting them aligned, one of them was still slightly out of focus so then I just end up stopping down on my aperature.
Finally finished this video……trying to watch bits and pieces of this video since yesterday and actually listen to what you’re saying with a 2.5 year old is….well you know….🤦. 😂

Nice video Katelyn. Since you’ve clearly shown the superiority of the RF 85 f/1.2 over the 28-70 f/2 and 70-200 f/2.8, I’m wondering if you can do another comparison, pitting the RF 85 f/1.2 against the EF 85 f/1.4L IS and Samyang/Rokinon RF 85 f/1.4. I ask because someone like myself doesn’t want to spend $2500 on an 85, but the EF version is a more palatable $1500, and the Samyang is a relative bargain (or is it?) at $899. Since you have an eye for the aesthetics of the 85, your insights into these cheaper options would be very helpful.
