    Regarding 5:21, the weight of lead is actually 41% lighter than gold. This is because the density of lead is 11.34 grams per cubic centimeter whereas the density of gold is 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter. In other words, gold is 70.2% heavier than lead.

      Yeah, also there's nothing like the look and sheer majesty of pure gold. As soon as it is mixed, that's gone! 22K gold would be worthless if it couldn't be reverted to 24K gold! 14K is only 58% gold! It doesn't even resemble pure gold imo. It is true that pure gold puts a whole lot more money locked away inside the piece that isn't earning interest or dividends elsewhere. And if the economy is doing well, gold prices are low and dropping so the retail jewelers loses out again-double 'Dem losses! These are where the astronomical prices for jewelry come from. It's all factored into the price. That's why you pay more than double the price of the material even when the manufacturing costs are low.

    This guy is right, I have a much smaller 24k chain that weighs 18 grams and I sleep with it all the time, never broke once. The minor scratch marks aren’t an issue and still has that nice deep yellow shine.

      Light scratches just add character imo. Im still rocking a 3mm mariner link chain(my favorite link) and a 3 or 4mm rope braclet in 14k tho. Looking to upgrade to 24k in the future. Hopefully I can find someome to make me a nice mariner link chain when I have the funds. I have so many 14k pendants tho lol. Got tricked into thinking 14k was best like many others.

    Not only are people scared of buying pure gold bc they think it's too soft, people are also afraid to buy 18k gold for the same reason. In the U.S., 14k gold is the most bought form of gold. It's honestly a shame bc 18k-24k gold looks and feels so much better than 10k-14k gold.

    You are quite right! Keep in mind we Goldsmiths do generally pass on the cost of the materials to the customer, but most are not interested in paying the high prices for 22K and higher. I love 22K and 24K, and I generally use .999 silver (and 22K) for chains and pendants, but for rings I use .925 silver and 10-18k.

    There is an element of truth about the durability. Gold isn't exactly dainty but it can get scuffed easily or small pieces broken. If you ask for 24k the jeweler will just put a higher markup. The masses are generally content with 18k which is often my preference, but 24k does have a unique shine to it.

    Anneal that ring and try to bend it again gold work hardens the final hardness of a piece of 24 karat jewelry is reliant on the jeweler not the material

  • @seashellsonazure
    @seashellsonazure 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    The deal is just like with pure silver, can"t match beauty of pure gold or pure silver but it takes more work.
    Both need to be rolled several times for strenght and arc welded instead of torch soldered.
    A pure silver or gold ring can be casted and hammered or rolled for strength but on a chain you need to arc weld one by one to keep it strong, most jewelers will just torch the metal, that's why they need to use more heavy difficult to wear links to keep the strength, but it can be done confortable and strong with 24k by using arc welding on a well rolled smaller link.

    • @Makermook
      @Makermook 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The arc welding thing is overkill. I flame solder or fuse my pieces. The final step I take is tumbling them in a rock tumbler with soapy water and stainless steel shot. Those millions of tiny impacts effectively work-harden the whole piece.

    I made two 24k rings myself - cause I wanted the true yellow clean color, and I couldn't find any one who made and sold it.
    I then made a thin, and a thick one. The thick one is perfect solid, but I have to say that the smallest one is pretty fragile. I can bend it with my pinky - but it have lasted for about 4 years, and I wear it everyday.
    A lot of jewelry stores, sells 14k rings for the most part even more, than I spent on each 24k ring.

    • @em4703
      @em4703 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its durable because the links are thick. In thinner chains and jewelry that's exposed to wear and forces it just bends all over. 22k is the sweet spot if the color of 18k isn't attractive to you. The jump in stiffness and wear resistance is night and day for smaller pieces.

    They mean it harder to keep looking pristine. 24kt gold scratches and dents easily. Rings and bracelets start to look duller over time because it’s bumping in to shit all day. Then when or if u get it polished u loose a lot of gold trying to get its luster back.

    • @m.a.889
      @m.a.889 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, but 22 K gold has enough alloy to make it solid. 14 K they are trying to make money and sell you 45% of alloy

    • @kvtar
      @kvtar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you buff 24k, you will lose metal. Now if you BURNISH 24k, you won't lose metal. It's too soft to buff like you would lower alloyed gold. Thing is, burnishing takes longer and is harder than buffing. 24k takes a different skill set that lots of western jewelers don't have. A little more labor intensive when polishing plus, it melts at a hotter temperature. You can easily hammer and burnish scratches and dents with zero metal lost.

    Oh, now I understand why alchemists thought they could turn lead into gold, because lead has the same density and softness as 24k gold. I always thought that was a bit random for them to compare lead to gold.

The only thing I'd suggest is get a chain long enough to slip on/off your head because the clasps do wear out over time.

    I like the video and agree with your points about 24k gold and it's superiority, but your last words are a little confusing. You had to give the jeweler double the weight of gold that the piece is made out of? That means you paid him in gold and the jewelers premium was 100% of the gold value. Is that correct?

  • @Greg042869
    @Greg042869 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Jewelers have no problem charging more. It's luxury so there is no shame. Seriously.
    Goldsmiths use solder with the same purity as their piece in order to earn the hallmark stamp. There is no room in .999 gold to add anything to make it melt at a lower temperature. Therefore you will need someone who is experienced in casting or fusing gold together where necessary.
    Sterling is actually higher than .925 (.930-.935) to allow for solders that are less pure.

    Hey I live in Boca Raton area what’s the name of the jeweler that does this?

  • @tasdefeuilles
    @tasdefeuilles 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jewelers say it’s too soft mostly because it scratches really easily. Smaller pieces will be easier to bend/break but on a big chain like this it’s mostly scratching that I’d be worried about.

    • @rolandotillit2867
      @rolandotillit2867 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See how scuffed up it gets? That's weight you're shaving off, that 30g ring after years of wearing it and using your hands with it on will weigh 28g. You're literally disintegrating your stuff. It's not too soft for your skin, it's too soft for the environment you interact with.

    • @krisjones4051
      @krisjones4051 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I doubt you’d lose 2g even after 30 years, but the value of gold in 2050 will definitely outstrip any potential loss of mass.

    Your chain is absolutely beautiful!!! I’m trying to decide between your link style and the Thai aviator pattern all the way through. Would you recommend the alternating aviator and anchor chain, or just the regular aviator or anchor all the way through?
    Also, do you think a 75 gram necklace would still have a substantial weight feel? It’s the most I can afford to buy.
    Thank you so much for your time and your awesome video.

    I totally agree, they are making money taking advantage of the fact that many people dont know about jewelry purity and the hardness of the metals, I have searched lots of info about 24k and all saying the same bullshit “its too soft” they wanted to keeping us ignorant about it.
    How the asian and indian people wears 24k huh? they dont go for 10k or 14k bullshits.
    The lowest I go its 18k cause in this americas I cant get 24k.

      You can get 24K from this company called Mene. Mene.com/invite/lE00Cg
      Most of their inventory are not the heaviest pieces like this guy is showing in his video, but you can get some pretty nice stuff from them. They have a piece called the heavy cable chain that goes up to 61 grams at the longest length or they have a linear link chain that is a massive 320 grams.

    • @csick11
      @csick11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Technically it's TRUE! 24k is soft but that's because a 1k cost 24k gold is much smaller than 18k or 14k chain. So the clasp is very soft! Now if you want durability with 24k gold! You got to spend 4 grand and up

    What about a pendant or ring with stones. Is it still possible to use 24k gold? Or would the stones fall out easily?

    • @ummlittlemuslim
      @ummlittlemuslim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In antique jewlery they used white gold for the prongs because its stronger. i have the same question as you... Different ways to keep stones in. I just bought a 300 yr old ring with a ruby in 18k gold. They used to wrap the gems in gold. If you look back at examples of historical rings in 22k you could find how they worked stones into gold to get an idea.

  • @blackbusinessballin6435

    The reason they say it’s too soft is bcz it is. Most people cannot afford a 150 gram solid 24k chain jewelers make most of their money in the 5 to 30 gram range a lot of the pieces are hollow to give it a bigger look with 24k this becomes a problem due to the softness
