To those not in the know, Ikaruga is also on Steam. If you got a laptop like I do, play it in vertical mode and flip your laptop 90 degrees. The best way to play it.

Also be sure to have good iron, otherwise you won't be able to register your scores. My previous laptop did not meet the game's standards, but this one does.

Ikaruga's soundtrack is one of THE most stunning OSTs i've ever listened to and the way it seems to specifically be talking to Radiant Silvergun fans is a wonderful nod to its predecessor.
The way it conveys increasing despair through the simple act of reusing the "chorus" notes off the first level's theme in each track with less intensity gets across the increasingly dangerous odds you're fighting through and the idea that maybe this is a losing battle.
    And then, in that moment.
When you see the final boss is the same one from RS. The chorus kicks back in, with full intensity.
If you played RS, you couldn't beat it the first time because it had grown too strong.
But here it was now, out in the open, having had its powers siphoned to power this empire's weapons and machinery.
This was your chance to end it.

I was FLOORED to see the Origin, again as the final obstacle, to the end of Ikaruga.
The re-occurring theme from the first stage, subtly implemented thought the rest of the game's stages music was a masterful use of a score, to help progress a narration in a game...a feat not routinely achievable even across other mediums. This sort of story narration though the power of music...a constantly recurring musical theme is technique called Leitmotif.
More recently, another OST, equally effective in delivering an emotional payload as the story progressed was available in the title, UNDERTALE. This game got a Limited Edition physical release that included an actual locket (an item also present within the game) and it played the musical theme found throughout most of the other tracks of that game.
Getting back to Trasure, the OST to Radiant was amazing, Hitoshi Sakimoto is among the most revered composers in gaming music, but Hiroshi Iuchi's score for Ikaruga is a marvel, when you take into account that he is a graphic designer by trade, yet is talented enough to have created such an emotionally charged soundtrack.

They're most definitely related. The Stone-like from Radiant Silvergun shows up at the end of Ikaruga. It even has the same final sequence of being unable to shoot. The only difference is that Ikaruga actually ends up destroying the Stone-like. So maybe it stopped the cycle of resets?

You can't really do a complete history of Cave without a history of Toaplan because they are the predecessor to Cave. When Toaplan disbanded the employees formed Cave along with Raizing and Gazelle which were later absorbed into Cave. Cave's "house style" was a continuation of what Toaplan was doing before they went out of business and their final game Batsugun was the progenitor of the bullet hell genre and the direct ancestor of basically all of Cave's lineup.

I wonder if Hiroshi Iuchi watched Top Gun or Independence Day while developing Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga? Especially considering the finale of Top Gun: Maverick is literally like the final boss of both games.

Nier Automata takes a lot of inspiration from Ikaruga, from the art direction to the music that syncs with the action. 2B looks a little like Kagari, the pilot of the 2P ship

It's odd how I even learned about Ikaruga's existence. I played this old Mega Man flash game called "Mega Man Polarity" and it was basically Mega Man with Ikaruga's color switching mechanic. It also used some music from Ikaruga which was one thing I really remember from that flash game. Years later, I heard the music "Ideal" (Ikaruga's first level theme) from this video talking about Ikaruga, and here I am now. The soundtrack is what sticks with me the most because of all of this.

Do an episode on the Raizing 'Battle' series; Battle Garegga, Armed Police Batrider and Battle Bakraid. There's a lot of incredible creative and technical detail to these games beyond their infamously subversive scoring and design mechanics. Armed Police Batrider in particular is a carnival of Grade A visual artistry and sonic excellence which needs more exposure and people asking quite loudly why M2 or Hamster or someone else hasn't blessed this masterpiece with a home port.

Ikaruga was one of the first games I bought for my Xbox360 when I saw it on XBoxLive. Funnily enough I beat the first level on the Dot Eater rank and now own a broken/easter egg replay on save. (it's stage 1 but the player never spawns yet the game proceeds anyways.) Also beating the game on Xbox 360 unlocks the "prototype mode", which lets players start with 100 shots and just like the prototype you spoke about, make you absorb bullets to be able to shoot them.
    Thanks for another great video.

According to an article by Gematsu in August 2019, it's still in development. They said it will be coming out near the end of the console's life-cycle. Here's to hoping it actually does.

  • @VanArtic
    @VanArtic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That "project RS3" (Ubusuna is the name of the game, a nod to Ikaruga's Ubusunagami Okinokai, a power discovered by that game's villain) is on the works by Hiroshi Iuchi, announced formally in 2014, the director of both RS and Ikaruga teased a game about a "50 year war", with no other info.
Fast forward to 2019, Iuchi got in touch with M2 to put this project in motion. It's basically ready and playable, it just needs some touches on the graphics, according to them in a 2020 Q&A livestream. The chapter 1 song was also teased, along with some vague title screen screenshots. The only confirmed platform so far is PS4. No release date.

Why would you say it was a challenge for Treasure to get Radiant Silvergun to run smoothly on the Saturn? The arcade version runs on the Sega ST-V arcade board, which is the literally the exact same hardware as the Saturn, except a cart instead of a CD. They would have no challenge in getting it to run on the Saturn, which explains why it took only 2 months to release the Saturn version with the added videos and difficulty settings.

Both games are truly works of art!The soundtrack for both are EPIC(especially Ikaruga,it has the best music of ANY game imo)the graphics for R’S’gun were stunning & some of the finest for any console at the time of release,my first play of the game(Jap’import for my 50hz/60hz switchable SATURN)was mind blowing at the time, they were outstanding, both games still look amazing, especially the hd update for xbla which are the only versions I’ve got now.I sold my R’S’gun Japanese import for peanuts once I had collected all the must have SATURN import games. If only I knew how much my games like R’S’gun would end up selling for!..IF ONLY🙁

The game was developed on the ST-V board which the Saturn is based off...it was an easy conversion. Satrun mode from start to finish is about 2.5 hours. Arcade mode lets you pick stage 2 or stage 4 so you wont go thru the whole game

After having been a proud owner and addicted to the Gamecube version since day one of its release, I finally got a close friend of mine to sell me his PAL Dreamcast some months ago after trying to convince him to do so for ages.
After some time, having had to solve several issues, such as having to adjust the laser to get the system running again, buying a pound hdmi cable for a initial cheap solution on getting a decent signal transmitted to a 'modern' TV, an finally finding the right boot cd able to fake a VGA routine on most non VGA games (I finally went for Code Breaker, since it works on almost all games), I decided to get a japanese release of Ikaruga for the system. And I went for a as-new-condition offer from a former collector at 90€ on ebay.
When I got this by mail, I was as happy as never before on buying a game since doing so since the mid eighties, when I initially started doing so.
This game, aside all the hype and worshipping by others, and in majority ones that never even got to actually play and enjoy this beyond the first stage, is the ultimate game for those who really got to start an honest relation with it.
Both versions of the game are 100% identical, gameplay wise.
But finally being able to play it on original hardware is a whole new experience.

    • @alanladdseinekatze859
      @alanladdseinekatze859 5 ปีที่แล้ว

And sorry to have forgotten to mention, I am obviously talking Ikaruga, not Radiant Silvergun, which I, most sadly, never have gotten the chance to play.
And, if you are new to these two games and have grown up with what is commonly known as 'bullet hell', these two seem to be of that kind, but are so far from it.
The bullet hell branch in the shmup world might, most likely, not even exist without these two, but sadly, this is due to players and developers not actually understood, what the envolved in development employees at Treasure had in mind implementing the unique chain and, in case of Ikaruga, absorb based system.
Here in this video, during the second half of it, we see gameplay of Ikaruga.
And, in contrary of what is truly stated before it being shown, the person playing it is playing it leaving the aspect of chaining aside, since only keeping up absorbing by changing polarity is the less stressful way to try to master it.
But this way of playing will not get one even close on mastering the game.
A depth of gameplay of this degree has never been reached before or after this uncomparable game came into being.
Not even modern, somewhat comparable, releases, such as the Souls series, gets even close.

After so long, Tiago Pereira dos Santos Silva just feels like a part of the outro itself rather than a name mention.
The videos would feel weird without it.
That said, this game/series looks both fun and like it would melt my brain to even try playing. Though the puzzle aspect with the shoot X and not Y to combo reminds me of Super Killer Hornet, in which damage dealt and score modifiers were handled by...shooting math. As you were fighting the alien menace, numbers would fall down the screen and you would have to create and solve math problems, with the answer going toward your points. The game itself was so-so as far as shooters go, but the mechanic was pretty nifty.

Interesting that Gonzo would be brought up in this video, as they made my all-time favorite anime, Rosario+Vampire, and this video is released on the birthday of my favorite character from said anime, Mizore Shirayuki. I am a total nerd. :P

Just bought ikaruga on steam during black Friday for $5. Can get both and other great shmups decently cheap on Steam sales.
Shmups skill test was $4 during sale as well.

Daniel Ibbertson oh I'm sure they will be again during the holiday sale.
They actually got a lot of nice shmups on Steam, Raiden 1-3, furious angels, hurricane of vastray, bullet souls, dariusburst CS, many others.
Edit: the steam releases of radiant silvergun and ikaruga are the HD remaster XBox releases that you mentioned

EE-KshortA-RshortUH-GA which is due to devoicing certain vowel sounds when certain kana interact. Or something.

Another great video ! While they’re good games I think part of it has to do with name dropping and being in the inner circle of unknown cool. Which isn’t a bad thing

It's best to play Ikaruga on the Sega Dreamcast, if you have the money for it...or you burn a .ISO file to a blank CD. If you want a suggestion for a complete history episode, DO ALIEN SOLDIER!

Man it sucks how late everyone is in this video. I was fortunate to buy Radiant Silvergun in 1999 for less than $60. I didnt even know what it was I had a 4in1 Converter cart and I just wanted some good games. Took me almost a year to get it right and learn the pattern and find the doggy

in terms of the pronunciation of "IKARUGA", the "U" in japanese names, when between syllables, tend to be mostly silent.
that said, it's not incorrect to say [EE-KAH-ROO-GAH], for when you take the kana for ikaruga (いかるが), that is how
    it is spoken.
EDIT: there is something that been bugging me, though... is it a facet of british humor to be awful at pronouncing
japanese or eastern asian words and names? i find that this seems to be a constant from the various british and
    english content creators i watch.

Interesting that you started the video with footage from Touhou Eiyashou ~ Imperishable Night. It makes me wonder if a Complete History of Touhou is being considered. If you or your patrons decide to do so I recommend that it be done sooner rather than later. Touhou is a huge series to cover at 26 official games, 17 official print works, 9 story related original music CDs, and countless fan works with more being made every year.

I have a strange relationship with Ikaruga. I am not sure if I actually like the game, but I always have a great time playing it. There are a bunch of details I clearly do not like about it. Yet, I am still enjoying the game overall.
