Bought Radiant Silvergun recently on xbox first time playing it....its awesome the music, sounds gameplay all click and hit immediately can't believe I passed on saturn back in the day, made it up with ikaruga on dreamcast tho
This video deserves more views, especially with Radiant Silvergun finally got ported to Nintendo Switch. It also has to be mentioned that Radiant Silvergun’s achilles heel is the weapon level system. Unlike Ikaruga where your DPS is fixed / doubled when the opposite color is used, in RS your DPS is directly tied to score. If you don’t score at all, your DPS will be so weak you’ll have better luck timing the bosses out than beating them. It makes Radiant Silvergun more painful to play casually with continues.
Not many know this because their company was not directly credited, but they were also responsible for the design and development of Gradius V as well! In certain difficulties and loops, that really starts to show with how hellish the patterns get.
an absolutely brilliant video on not only Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun, but the legacy of Treasure itself. this is an a treat and i can’t thank you enough for putting all the effort into such a wonderful video.
This video made me smile from beginning to end. I love Treasure as a dev so much, from beginning with Gunstar Heroes, to Sin and Punishment, to my diehard love of shmups which RS and Ikaruga greatly contributed to. Great video sir.
Oh hell yes!!! A TREASURE VIDEO??? you the Goat for this bro I love treasure I just purchased ikaruga Special edition for ps4 and let me tell you it's that epic Great video keep this up!!!!
Thanks so much for watching! I almost bought that version too, but already have it on GameCube, Steam and Xbox. The extras in that Special Edition look awesome though, so I will probably buy....
I own both games on their original respective consoles but enjoy Ikaruga a bit more. Its something about the music in Ikaruga that makes it feel, epic. You did a great job putting this vid together. Congrats!
Very detailed and informative analysis. Thanks for all the work! Imo, what makes Ikaruga so special is not only the precision but also a timeless sense of elegance. It somehow transcends the usual anime inspired mecha and world designs. Edit: One little thing though - it may be my pc setup but the music, especially in the Ikaruga part, is probably a bit too loud compared to your voice.
Absolutly great video, a great in depth view on this games and its development. I hope you blow up in some time, we need people like you that have such a passion and want to bring such quality content to youtube :D. One little thing would be nice when you say "thanks for watching" in the end. Everybody does that and in the end it felt something missing xD.
Well here's a personal thank you for watching and commenting! It is much appreciated and I'm glad you liked. You know, I am always feeling like I missed something at the end of a video and maybe that's just it.
You're not giving other shmups enough credit, which is fine because I realize the deeper end of the shmup genre is very niche. The scoring systems are where the depth is added and bullet hell games like Cave's library require intense precision, brute force will just have you credit feeding through the game without engaging with its gameplay systems (I'd even call Ikaruga less precise than a lot of games in some ways, like not having an option to slow your movement for finer bullet dodging). Something like Battle Garegga for instance is a hundred times more complicated than Ikaruga in learning how to manage the rank system, Ikaruga just wears its gimmick on its sleeve. Many other shmups have shielding systems or other bullet erasing gimmicks or hitbox size modifiers to save yourself from death so Ikaruga is really no different there when it comes to deaths being on the player in any well balanced game. I'm not trying to slag in Ikaruga, it's a great game, one of the best and it got many people interested in the genre due to its novel polarity switching. It's just that saying other games aren't as balanced or fair is false. Ikaruga would definitely hold a spot in the top ten best shmups of all time but games like Ketsui or Garegga are held in higher regard by enthusiasts. I'd recommend The Electric Underground's "Ikaruga is not a puzzle game" video where he goes into much better detail than I could.
This is a great video it’s nicely paced. I remember buying this game at the time I did t know who treasure was as I never played any of their games. I loved gradius and was itching for something in the genre on GameCube. So I picked ikaruga up as well as another shooter called chaos field and played them for a month. I tried to like ikaruga but Honestly I hated it to the point where I gave it away. It was my first time playing a bullet hell game and was my last I hate the genre with every fiber of my being. To me gradius and einhander are hands down the best shooters with a excellent difficulty curve. So if you haven’t guessed games like dark souls or even ninja gaiden on the original Xbox can kiss my ass for kicking my ass in the first 5 minutes of gameplay ugh!
Some of the dev quotes are puzzling in the sense that they suggest that they don’t really grasp the STP genre. Few STGs have ever been about reflex dodging, but about of memorisation, routing and execution. The dev quotes suggesting that Ikaruga is unique in its departure from reflex-centric gameplay in favour of careful strategising suggests one of two things: a) They understood the genre and their quotes are purely marketing or that b) In their development of Ikaruga (and RS as well) they stumbled upon and implemented what every great shmup is about while remaining believing oblivious to what made other standout titles of the genre great.
I bought Ikaruga for DC back in 2002 or whenever that was, lol. I thought the game’s gimmick was a little too much for my taste. This game pretty much ended my shooters purchasing. I didnt get Gradius V or RType Final until recently.
Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga aren't any more like puzzle games than any other shmup. They're just more up-front about the fact that maximizing your score requires puzzling out what to do. "IT'S LIKE DARK SOULS BECAUSE YOU DIE A LOT" Aaaaand I'm out
Radiant Silvergun is a Rare game because: - Nobody wanted it - Nobody even asked for it - It was even RARE in JAPAN! - It was free for gold on Xbox... Nobody is playing it or acknowledging that... It's also $15 i think, & people STILL don't give a shit lmao - No real, sane, normal, human being is going to spend real, hard earned MONEY, on this chaotic mess for some old ass console nobody even remembers... - If this game was sold on Playstation, you know, like any good OG game did, It would've been a massive success like G Darius, Einhander, Gradius Gaiden... You get it. - Nobody had a Saturn... People were smart back then & knew better, Thus, they bought a Playstation, Windows 95, or a N64 instead. People ACTUALLY remember the Dreamcast because that had Crazy Taxi & Code V, Those games still kick the shit out of the Saturn & is enough of a reason to never go back to it. Also, Treasure fucking sucked. - These are the ONLY 2 games people remember from them - These 2 games don't last long & get old, VERY, fucking quickly - I have seen people develop buyers remorse after playing Radiant Silvergun & laugh every fucking time. - The shmup genre has been dead & gone for over a decade - The intense difficulty & gameplay will definitely turn off gamers today - I could've sworn some people had seizures and/or felt dizziness after a session with these games & that's why you should purchase Radiant Silvergun...

What is DPS?
Damage per, second I assume
I thought about making a video about Treasure but I see someone has already made a great one! As always, be attitude for gains…
Thanks so much! Plenty of space on TH-cam - I am sure you can take another angle with a Treasure video too.
Not many know this because their company was not directly credited, but they were also responsible for the design and development of Gradius V as well! In certain difficulties and loops, that really starts to show with how hellish the patterns get.
Outstanding documentary. Love this developer.

I have purchased Ikaruga on the Xbox One today.
Check the top replays for strategy. The top from X 360 days even had room for improvement.

Ikaruga is the best shooting game ever created ! thank you so much for the detail information ^^

Thanks for the comment and feedback on the sound! I am self-taught and still very much learning, so that is very helpful to hear. Glad you enjoyed.
Amazing video, really well put together and really fun to watch through!
23:37 JUST LIKE EVERY SHMUP!?!?!?!?!
dodonpachi deadass dropped with the tagline "dying is good"

This is a great channel.
i hope Ubusuna will be good
斑鸠 是我游戏榜单中和ICO并列的no 1,两款游戏的理念都是极简的,但内核非常深遂,造就了一种无与伦比的美感
3:18 Wow. Could you imagine if EVERY modern company started believing that…..

Yes I think it's quite a difficult game to get into Shmups with, something like Musihimesama is more playable or Dodonpachi
