    Nice video but you seem to forgot a bit of a FUN FACT that the first Gradius game for the Famicom/NES was the first game to have the classic Konami Code: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A and Start
    The Konami Code was created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto, who was developing the home port of the 1985 arcade game Gradius for the NES. Finding the game too difficult to play through during testing, he created the cheat code, which gives the player a full set of power-ups (normally attained gradually throughout the game). After entering the sequence using the controller when the game was paused the player received all available power-ups. The code was meant to be removed prior to publishing, but this was overlooked and only discovered as the game was being prepared for mass production. The developers decided to leave it there, as removing it could result in new bugs and glitches. The sequence was easy enough to remember for testers and simultaneously sufficiently hard to enter accidentally during the gameplay for unsuspecting users.

    • @RewindArcade
      @RewindArcade  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, not all the facts I researched made it into the video to keep things flowing better. I didn’t dive too far into ports, but I do regret not mentioning the Konami Code making its first appearance here. So many people think Contra was where it initially showed up.
      In later videos I talk about facts that didn’t get included, either during the credits or in a separate bonus video, but this was the first full scale documentary I had ever made so I was still working things out.
      Appreciate the facts though and hope you enjoyed watching. 👍

      While Gradius V seems to be the pinnacle of the series, in the terms of length, Gradius III, particularly its Arcade, PS2, PSP, and OG Xbox ports, is the longest game overall in the series. Now if Gradius VI was a reality, it should honestly be a blend of both games. Moreover, I would also like to see some new weapons as well, including one that will take out obstacles that cannot be taken out otherwise, as well as can kill those Bit snatching ships, and maybe some homing lasers in the vein of the giant homing beam in the Raiden video game series.

    • @RewindArcade
      @RewindArcade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s really funny you brought this up because I was just having a conversation with someone yesterday about how Gradius III was the longest game in the series. Gaiden actually might be longer in terms of content/play time but III definitely has the most stages. I’m not expecting a Gradius VI honestly and at this point I’m not even sure who would even make it, but I’d love for it to happen.

      @@RewindArcade , I have one word for you about that and it is WayForward. Look at how awesome Contra IV/4 was under their watch, as well as their other games. WayForward has NEVER made a horrible game and they ALWAYS get positive reviews, which is pretty unheard of for a two decade plus video game studio, let alone an indie one.

    • @paxhumana2015
      @paxhumana2015 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RewindArcade , why not make it a blend of all three games, as well as add sub-bosses in the game, and make an actually challenging final boss for once? I would also double the amount of Options in the sequel, too. Gradius V was really overwhelming for those four Options.

      Funnily enough, Konami currently has a contest going on for indie studios where they can make a prototype remake or sequel to some of their older series with the potential of it becoming a full-on game later on. Since the real gradius series was ended on 2008, it just sucks. Because konami is passioning with pachinko or just published crap gradius spin off games like otomedius series "cringiest-dius". Also made unfinished remastered salamander 1 game that it can't be played on mobile, cuz this game was supposed to be mobile game.

    Thank God that channels like yours exist. You are not only making a digital museum for video games, but describing things in a way for the younger generations to understand how new and exciting these games were when they released. I think it’s hard to picture for people that grew up with video games in 1080 and 4K with beautiful graphics, how blown away we were when these games released. I felt the same way about the early video games, like Pong, when I was a kid. How could anyone be excited to play this stupid game? It is so basic and repetitive. But I also thought that games like Excitebike looked so realistic and mind blowing. It’s one thing to show the story of these games, but allowing people to experience the story of these games through your storytelling is something you just don’t expect anymore these days. So congrats on making such amazing content, and please please please, keep doing what your doing. 🙏🏼❤️

    • @RewindArcade
      @RewindArcade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much, that really means a lot!! I'm really happy you understood the ideas I'm trying to get across and why I go to such lengths to make the story as interesting to watch as it is to listen to. It's a lot of work, but I have fun doing it (most of the time haha). I do agree that it's very hard to get across to newer generations why these older games are so important to what they play nowadays and how impressive they were when they first released.
      Interestingly, there was a job opening last year for talking to kids about the inner workings of games like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox. I applied for it, but instead pitched the concept of instead talking to them about the history of video games and how it inspired and helped build the foundation for the games they play today. Needless to say, I didn't hear back from anyone about the job, haha.
      Thanks again for the kind words and I appreciate you watching!

    I'm glad you compared Xevious to Scramble, as it dawned on me a while ago that while they look very different, Xevious was just a vertical version of Scramble, the main mechanic being bomb drops that you need to time correctly to hit ground units. Nobody ever makes this obvious comaparison! To me Gradius (and Scramble as its father) is without doubt the most important and influential shoot-em-up game ever, it came out the gate fully-formed in 1985 with so many new and unique innovations and creative descisions, and to this day modern 2d horizontal shmups are really just variations on Gradius, some very cool ones of course, but even the R-Type creators admit that Gradius was their benchmark. It's what Super Mario Bros was to platformers, it may have not been the first one ever but it was the biggest leap in the genre (no pun intended) so far. And the icing on the cake for me is the musical legacy, some of the best video game music ever made throughout all its sequels and spin-offs.

    • @RewindArcade
      @RewindArcade  ปีที่แล้ว

      It always upsets me that Scramble doesn’t get more credit in the shmup community because it was such a huge part of its evolution. Gradius obviously kicked down the doors and became the gold standard for the genre, but Scramble is really what laid its foundation. Konami in the 1980s was a juggernaut when it came to innovation with video games as a whole. Breaks my heart to see what they’ve become these days…

    • @TheRestartPoint
      @TheRestartPoint ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RewindArcade Yeah it's a shame they haven't respected their legacy more and managed to maintain some of their credability like Capcom have for instance. Maybe one day things will improve if they employ more talent from the likes of M2 and Treasure and other veterans, hopefully. At least the company still exists though, unlike most from the classic period.

    Great video. One thing you missed though about GRADIUS/NEMESIS is that it was one of the first games if not the first that actively alters the difficulty of play depending on how "POWERED UP" you are. If you get "Laser, Missile and 4 Options/Multiples" the difficulty goes up, more bullets, more enemy's.
    This is my fave SEU series of all time, thank you for compiling this gaming history into one place :)

    I have only played the NES and SNES titles and have not played them for a very long time, but Gradius has a very special place in my heart (especially the soundtrack.) In your case, it looks like it also has very special places in your arms as well - those Gradius and Moai tattoos are wicked sick! Thank you for the information-dense video of the history of Gradius. 54 minutes of video went by so fast. This was a wonderful treat to watch. Please keep up the good work. :)

    Excellent video! I was never really a Gradius player (the most I played of a game was Life Force on the NES), but I was aware of the series, and you really did an amazing job of going over the games in the series and explaining the overall history. It was very fun to watch!

      Thanks, I appreciate the kind words! It’s definitely not always a very easy series to get into since most of the games can be pretty difficult. The Gradius series is very near and dear to my heart. When we got our SNES when I was still a toddler, we got Gradius 3 and Zelda a Link to the Past with it, and it was the first time I was allowed to play video games myself instead of just watching my parents and older brother play. While I can't beat most Gradius games without cheating or savestates, I can reliably clear Gradius 3 SNES on easy, which doesn't show the short ending cutscene. I've also legitimately beaten (on easy when available) Gradius 2 Famicom, Nemesis 2 Gameboy, and Gradius Galaxies (GBA). I have so much I want to say about this series so I will make multiple comments instead of having a huge wall of text.

    Awesome video, know better the development history of Gradius! Thank you for uploading it!
    Gradius series is one of my favourite franchise all the time, it is the series that I started to collect retro games.
    I spent 4 years to collect all the physical versions of the entire Gradius, Parodius and Salamander series also including all the compilations contain one or more games from the series like Konami GB Collection and Konami Arcade Collection DS, also the 3 compilations on PSP and the Konami MSX Collection on Sega Saturn and PS1.
    I think the sharp x1 and pc-8801 versions are the rarest versions to collect, but luckily, after 4 years' searching I got them both in a day!

    Wow. I can't believe you only have 2.38K subscribers. Only 3 minutes into the video and I learned something new. If you use the Konami code for Gradius III, you get all the power-ups... as long as you use the L + R buttons. If you use the D-pad, you die instantly. The slowdown on the SNES (Z80 chip @ 3.58Mhz) is welcome.
    I'll beat these games once I'm retired. Anyways, keep up the great work. SUBSCRIBED.

    Apologies for the wall of text, but there’s so much to appreciate from this video. The amount of work that you put into your videos is amazing, it really is impressive and I know in my heart that you do this out of two things that work in unison: Passion and Love for what you do.
    Bro, I know the very basics of video editing and producing, I mean the bare minimum, and even I can appreciate so many details that you put into every minute (sometimes a second has so much detail). This shows how much you invest into it and it shows, it really shows to even those who are not attentive because the end product is just a beauty of documentary.
    I sincerely hope you continue to do this for as long as you want to, I also watch The Gaming Historian, who does a phenomenal job as well, but there’s a quality and dedication easily discernable in what you do, the narration and the story are captivating. So much talent dude, I really mean it. So this is my very limited and truncated way of expressing my gratitude for this work, from a gamer to another gamer.
    Also! It was awesome to see that you are a fan of the game, the tattoos really cemented that haha! I love those endings that you do talking about the video in front of the camera, it adds value and a nice conclusion to a great job. Keep it up brother!

      Thanks so much for the kind words! They really do mean a lot and keep me going. I put so many tiny details in my work which often go unnoticed so it’s nice when people actually point them out. TH-cam is now a platform that is incredibly soul crushing and each week is a challenge to keep moving forward. Still though, it’s people like you that help me pick myself back up and continue forward. I seriously cannot thank you enough!

    • @GaiaAwakens
      @GaiaAwakens 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RewindArcade Nothing goes unnoticed, some of us take in the details, like when we look at a landscape and we make out certain features of the view and others simply sit down and gaze at it taking it all in; both enjoy the landscape equally and are inspired by it, and it's because of the same details that make up the image. I know what you mean by TH-cam being the way it is, I've been maintaining a series myself for over a year and funny enough we have almost the same amount of subscribers. In the end, I'm just glad to leave my content there for those who will find it valuable, but you my friend I just know you will grow greatly, give it time and don't stop doing what you love ❤️ I promise you at the very least I'll be watching every single second of your videos!

    You forgot to mention that "Vic" is also a shortcut for "Victoria", as second player is mentioned as Lord British.
    It is can also be recalled in the Intro of every level in Gradius, in musical fare. There is a part of the song seems inspired by the style often heard in British musicals... I was in denial for many years, but I can truly sense the British influence at the second phrase of the intro tune once you enter a new level.
    Seems that the empire that owns the Victoria Viper has it's origins British! That gives me a very strong remarkable thrill while I think about it!!! ^_^'

      Appreciate it, glad you enjoyed the video! I’m hoping someday we do get Gradius VI myself, but who even knows if it’s even a possibility with what Konami’s been doing lately. Fingers crossed though! Thanks for watching!

    That is the exact pattern in Ikaruga which was made by Treasure which has a previous Konami Devs 😳
    Mind blown 🤯

      Treasure had a lot of ex-Konami devs so I’m sure they enjoyed putting little nods to some of their previous works.

    Another interesting observation: Before this video, I had not previously heard about Konami wanting Gradius V to have an arcade release as well. Knowing this, it is honestly shocking they didn't get it out considering the game was made for PlayStation 2 and Konami had a PS2 based arcade board (with an actual PS2 console in it) called the Python. Porting from one platform to the other would have been seamless. I suppose they really just didn't have the time or resources to do it.

      Yeah, it’s pretty strange. Shmups were also performing poorly in arcades around that time too which probably didn’t help matters. Here’s an interview with the Gradius V producer that goes into more detail about it if you’re interested: th-cam.com/video/PRupB0C_zJ4/w-d-xo.html

    Used to bunk off school to play these in the arcade. However, like has been stated, the games had different titles in the U.K
    1st: Nemesis
    2nd: Salamander
    3rd: Vulcan Venture
    Loved them all, however, I was addicted to playing Vulcan Venture, I absolutely adored that game, it's a masterpiece.
    Incidentally, the knowledge of the poster is amazing. The quality & obvious hard work gone into this video is phenomenal, too -- KUDOS!!!

      Vulcan Venture/Gradius II has always been one of my favorites! Great stage and enemy design, amazing music, and really challenging gameplay. I especially loved the introduction of the boss rush stage. Definitely one of the peaks for the series!
      Thank you so much for the kind words, glad you enjoyed the video!!
