      What’s crazy is that the earthquake that caused the tsunami was live a 7-8. 1964’'s earthquake was 9.2 and that tsunami was only 200m.

    • @MyPlaylists22
      @MyPlaylists22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      the wave was never that high, the highest the wave was was 60 meters, it was over 500 meters "high" because it rolled up another mountain.

    • @MyPlaylists22
      @MyPlaylists22 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @Anon it doesn't no. it Makes it elevated to that height. You don't include the geography of where you live when someone asks you your height, do you? It is maybe technically right, but you cant tell me you can't see how misleading this is. I've seen many posts all over picturing tsunami heights, and they just show it as a massive wave. which it wasn't. This kind of misleading information that is technically not wrong but uses technicalities for sensation purposes is the cause of many misinformation based forums these days. Just look at antivaxxers.

    People don't realize that waves are often measured from the backside (relative to sea level). The face of the wave is often 2-3 times that. These guys were looking at a 100-200 foot wave. On top of that, Alaska has very little light pollution. If the moon was only a crescent, they are looking at a huge wall of nothing. A black abyss hurtling towards them.

    There are stories about how in the fjords of Scandinavia, there have been similar occurrences. One outstanding concern is the islands off Africa. Some of them, it's believed, can have major landslides into the ocean at any time, creating a tsunami that would reach across the Atlantic to our shores. Let's hope that never happens on our watch...

    I’ve heard various descriptions of huge tsunamis over the years. Some describe them as coming in like a giant flash flood, other descriptions depict tsunamis as giant walls of water. The word tsunami means ‘harbor wave’ in Japanese. A common misconception about tsunamis, is that there’s only one wave in a tsunami. In actuality though, tsunamis come in a series of waves called tsunami wave trains. Each individual wave can be a different size, and the first wave is seldom the biggest. Even if a seawall survives one tsunami wave, there’s usually more waves coming. It’s the subsequent waves that come after the first one that can knock down structures that survive the first wave. Those people who were in Lituya Bay that night were extremely lucky they weren’t hit multiple times.

    That ending sounds like a plot line from Final Destination. For those unfamiliar with the movie, people survive what should have killed them only to die tragically at a later date. Or for those familiar with the present day meme...
    Captain: You almost killed me last time, but guess what! I'mmmmm Baaa-aack!
    Heart Attack: Hello...

    To be clear, the wave crest was not 1720 feet. That was the max run up height on land. The wave was most likely closer to 100-200 feet tall

    @ 2:06 last last words he said over the anchor ⚓ "mayday mayday!" I think that was a mistake lol I'm pretty sure the last thing he said wasn't over the ⚓ more like radio..

      @PoloXL 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Credible journalism right there. "Howard dropped the anchor as low as it would go"... Wasn't he already anchored?

    • @megami.x
      @megami.x 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PoloXL1275 This could be a longshot and they simply messed up…… But they could’ve also been referring to the second anchor which would have been faster to drop than to pull up the first one and forgot to add the distinction.

      Matas Gus Lol. Robert Elliott. Look it up. I couldn’t care less if you don’t believe me. It’s the internet. Call lies all you want. Actually I spent closer to 10 years in bed from a motorcycle accident where a broke 2 vertebra and ruptured L5-S1 discs. Sorry if I’ve had a somewhat interesting life compared to you.

      Matas Gus and he didn’t work for NASA. he flew in the two seater for a meteorological experiment. Never said he worked for NASA. My buddy does though! Just boring computer work. Cheers!

    Hey my grandfather saw that tsunami! I live in Elfin Cove, Alaska and my grandfather saw the wave hit. By the time it got to our town it was only like 10 feet high, but still caused some damage on buildings by the shore. We have tsunamis hit here often, last time was in 2011 (Japan tsunami)

    Waves couldn't have broken crests yet, or the boats could not have stayed afloat. Breaks occur when underwater extremes slow while uppers retain speed; that killed the last couple in part.
