That game instantly gave me an addiction I couldn't satisfy until Borderlands finally came out. I think a new entry into the Hellgate universe could easily fit in to the modern gaming space today.
Enclave on the Xbox was horrible. The controls were incredibly awkward and unresponsive. Came back to the game on PC and finally was able to have fun with it.
Champions of Norrath was an awesome game I wish we would get a re release for that game I was pleasentle suprised when they rereleased kingdoms of Amular Reckoning both these games were a lot of fun
I expected a list of game with just a lazy description narrating it before clicking the video. What a I got is a greatly opinionated reviews with bunch of hidden gem. You just gave me a decent collection to check out on steam deck. didn't even notice that it was 5hrs video till I was in 1hr mark.
Just incase i wasn't understanding it correctly, in Champions of Norrath, you get exactly what Diablo has for returning to the HUB that you were asking for. You use your gate scroll (or whatever it's called), and then use it again from the menu to teleport back to where you were in the dungeon. Granted this is 20 years worth of memory I'm depending on but I'm fairly certain that's how it worked. They're very rare drops but you can pick them up in the stores and again, you use it from the pause menu. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with it, it's truly a fantastic game lost to time. The closest we have to a "remake" is the Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 Dark Alliance games that were made in the same engine at roughly the same time.
Any game that scores 60 percent or above is always worth a try in my experience because some games lose points due to peoples personal bias or the fact that they are comparing it to something much better. My entire game collection starts at 60 percent and occasionally I will go a little lower if the game is something that I like.
6/10 means it is a solid game. People really don't understand that 5/10 is a medium ok game that is also worth a try. Bad games start from 4/10 and only 1-2/10 are not worth a try.
I actually played Dungeon Lords in my childhood. I got it from a Disk from a gaming magazine. Our old weak ass PC back then couldn't quite handle the scenes in the woods haha, but I still played it and loved it, even played it in Multiplayer once with my brother I think. The atmosphere for some reason just had something that sucked you in.. and I remember that real sense of discovery, probably also due to the no-questmarkers-thing. I think I will get it on steam and replay it sometime this year. Thanks for reminding me of this gem, man!
I was looking for Summoner 2 on this list but was doubtful it would be listed since every TH-camr seems to have forgotten about it. IT WAS ON HERE! You have no idea how happy that makes me. It’s in my top 25 of all time list. It would be amazing to see what today’s tech could do with this franchise.
A fellow enjoyer of Summoner 2! It's sad that Volition abandoned Summoner to focus on Saints Row. I feel like the Summoner Series could have become huge if they'd committed or released on PC earlier.
@@Kwaighzo Also, to this day, I think Dragon Age: Origins was influenced by the Summoner series. I kinda look at them as the spiritual sequel that took off. It's still so weird. I just think Summoner 2 had an interesting world, good gameplay well written characters, and then because of bad marketing and a complete lack of interest from Volition, it just died out like a fart in the wind. Always a shame to me.
Legendary video on RPG's, so many unknown games going on my buy list thanks to you! Watching my first time just for entertaibment but I'll have to run through again to add games to my list next time
Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines is some of the best rpg I have played. I really love the 2000s vibe the game gives. The ambience and the music got a special place in my heart.
Fantastic that you stitched these vids together. Some I’ve seen and some are new to me. Great games and information on the forgotten titles. I actually have only five of these already between Xbox 360 and PC. Silver fall is an excellent game. I found another version, Silver Fall Earth Awakening that came out in 2019 as well. Almost the same game but runs better, a whole bunch of game fixes and tweaks, like they undated the original or other version.
Playing the majority of these games even though bad at times, during my playthroughs I actually had fun and happy to get a chance to actually experience them in my lifetime. Thanks for this list mate.
thank you for the good work giving smaller studios a chance even if the games are garbage. as a german i am a huge gothic fan and discovered your channel for your reviews of said games. keep up the amazing work you do for us RPG lovers
Bionic Commando is a hidden gem, original NES game is one of the absolute best of all time, alot of people ragged on this game, but I really enjoyed it on ps3 when it first came out, on pc is amazing of course, a big plus for me is Mike Patton of Faith No More voices the protagonist 😄
To answer your question about Sword Coast Legends, given the game was competing with the legacy of Baldur's Gate, Dark Alliance and Neverwinter Nights, it's not surprising it fell to the wayside.
I recently stumbled onto this channel and subscribed after seeing some of your other vids and I’ve been binging it for the past 3 days. Thank you for a great channel and your hard work. 👍🏾
In the first 5 games, there was only one that looked horrible and made me absolutely sure I will never play it, and you placed it as #1 :D Ok, continuing watching :P
4:05:15 thats golden, Btw, if i may recommend some better RPGs made by Dimitry: - Rise of Mages 1-2 : Visually outdated, but some unique mechanics and good artstyle in general - Konung 1-2 ( you may skip 1, i guess, its more like beta version of whats to come) : Party based hack and slash game with village development mechanic - Space Rangers 1-2: Its pretty popular *here* but i think western players might find it interesting. Its a space rpg with *space ship* as your character. Many game modes and literally a living world ( game can even win itself on easier difficulties ) - Etherlords 2 - you may say its a Kings Bounty clone, but with fights mechainc similar to Magic: The Gathering
Enclave was really something. I've finished it multiple times, that is... finishing each level with multiple characters, in both Light and Dark campaigns
# 5 VENETICA: Back in 2009/ 2010 the game really had been hyped by many Video Game magazines like the GAMESTAR and PC GAMES in Germany THE FIRST TEMPLAR, I agree. Had both titles, thsi one and the follow up one. HUNTED: DEMON SPORES - even though a bit tidiously single handed it still was a lot of fun tome. DEMONICON AND 19:29 YES PLEASE !!! do more videos like this. They are fun watching to. OK we can´t agree on everything but in general you are offering a good overview to beloved and interesting bidopgames on PC and on Console, even though I prefer the PC games.
DEMONICON and the two DRAKENSAN G games are based on the German made DAS SCHWARZE AUGE Tabletop RPG. It was done because back in the Eighties DRAGON&DUNGEONS had been FORBIDDEN in Germany due to it´s bloody content. Ironically the modern DAS SCHWARZE AUGE has been grown to something simialr by now. Even the makers of those computer games came from the DAS SCHWARZE AUGE FANDOM
I rediscovered Blades of time cause of that video. I do vaguely remember playing that game at a friends house almost 10 years ago. Added it to my wishlist, gonna get it as soon as it's on sale.
Anyone remember Soulbringer? It came packaged with Planescape: Torment. Soulbringer was the first RPG i ever completed, and was so happy to see it on GOG. Going to replay it very soon!
"Hard to be a God" is based on book with the same name. It was written by cult Soviet writers Arkadiy and Boris Strugatski. It's very famous book and one of their best work, so no wonder you liked the writing in the game.
Champions was great. Being able to transfer your Champions to the second one was sweet and random dungeons kept it fresh, same with weapons. I kept finding stronger weapons after playing for years. If they ported dark alliance they need to do this. Best couch co op on the ps2 for my friend group at the time. Many all nighters with up to six to eight heads passing the sticks.
You are a bless for rpg lovers. Very concrete opinions, and at the same time your love for games is felt in every video. Even when they are full trash. Best rpg reviewer 🥂
Hey man ! Love the video ! Saw all of it because i am in search of a specific game i was playing when i was old, but i stayed because the video in general was well structured. I am going to post here the same post i wrote at r/tipofmyjoystick in hopes that someone knows it. (it is not Blades of Darkness, but pretty close in terms of presentation) Platform(s): PC Genre: Adventure/Action/3rd Person Estimated year of release: 2000-2007 Graphics/art style: It didn't have very clear textures, you could see some very small polygons. The first stage had a dark sky and a ruined gothic castle. The atmosphere/feel was dark. Notable characters: I was playing as barbarian with one sword in one had. I am not sure, but he wasn't wearing anything at his torso. Notable gameplay mechanics: One of the first things you could do in the first level was go in a underwater canal or you could go to other places in the castle. Also i remember it had red orbs to collect and monsters to kill. Edit: There was a room at some point which had two raised platforms on each side and atop of them where some orbs to collect. I believe there was some kind of trick to get up there. I was very young when i played it so i wasnt all that smart to figure it out. :P Other details: An adventure game i played at my godmother's house. It was a 3rd person game with a guy like a barbarian wielding a sword on one hand. The start of the game is in a gothic style castle and you had to traverse several underwater sections to get through it. I remember it having traps and there were orbs to collect.
I'm sure you already played them, but if not give Binary Domain and Elex a look! Elex II is ok too, but the first one is so much better imho. All three games feature branching narratives too.
Highly recommend Shadowflare an episodic ARPG that's no longer sold anywhere but the internet archive should have a copy, the first episode was originally free.
Game of Thrones is amazing and George RR Martin wasn't just a consultant, he did writing work in there and he actually APPEARS in the game. It is a must play and a hidden gem.
About Dawn of magic 1-2. It is basically same game. Originally in Russia it was called Blood Magic and "second game" was called Blood Magic: Time of shadows which was expansion with smaller campaign. I personally liked time of shadows more because it was less grindy.
Rune 1 was such a great game for me. I liked it's combat a lot. You could move and swing. No modern games have it, they are all optimized for console gamepads. And Rune 1 world felt so mysterious and immersive, maybe because it was silent, similar to Dark Souls. But wasn't empty, it was atmospheric, it's environments told some story. A shame games like that are not made and Rune 2 failed so miserably.
Thank you so much for that video! If you decide to continue the series, you may want to try out older russian rpgs "Evil Islands" and "Golden Land", i remember them to be quite nice! There was also really good hack-and-slash on PSP "Undead knights" with zombie gimmik. PS: what is the music on the background in the last game?
You forgot that Vikings: Wolves of Midgard existed before you played it, meanwhile I totally forgot I already played and finished it years ago and only realized that when I recently found it in my gog library with the intent to install only to see I already got all (or mostly all) achievements. At least it wasn't so bad I remembered it?!
maybe it will be interesting. "Blades of Time"(2012) is a reboot of another game from the same developer "X-Blades"(2007) aka "Oniblade". but "Blades of Time" received greater success through the transition to a different style
Its a real struggle finding any rpg's with decent or even adequate itemization, loot and character progression. Most of these fall well short in those categories. Surprised that Two Worlds wasn't listed here. Quite an obscure rpg with a very unique and satisfying loot and character building system.
for champions of norrath you can use gate scrolls to go to town and back exactly where you use it and only costs 1 scroll, it has a sequel return to arms, I also suggest baldur's gate dark alliance 1 and 2, I go through all 4 of these games once a year since I have physical copies
Fun fact: Requital is a game based on the movie "Volkodav" ( Wolfhound) which was adaptation of the book series with the same name. Book was pretty good actually ( unlike the movie ) and i really liked it in my childhood. Fun fact number two: there was 2 games based on the movie, and second one is closer to your typical diablo-clone. English voiceacting is terrible indeed, which is funny, because russian voieacting was made by pretty good actors.
I can explain the line "they rain arrows on us like pissing cows" in the Cursed Crusade. As i suspected, the devs of this game are French. In french we have an expression that goes "raining like a pissing cow" (il pleut comme vache qui pisse). If you ever seen a cow piss you know why the saying. Of course you're not supposed to translate expressions that don't exist in another language word for word...
Of all the games in this video - I still can't believe we got Rune II lol I LOVE the original Rune, still play it today in fact once in awhile. There's even a community for the MP if you want to play that. But I never thought near 20 years later we'd get a sequel. And yeah, it's a fairly messy game to be fair, but Rune II still has that Rune feel (mostly) and the combat is quite good actually as you mention in the video. I just don't think people were interested in the building mechanics and the gathering stuff (though I didn't mind it much to be fair). And the game was just unfinished, and will obviously never be finished sadly.
I played most of these "obscures" at release, damn I'm getting old (Bionic Commando, Dungeon Siege 3, but I also played dg2 at launch), Beowulf: The Game and Bloodrayne 1(and 2).
I also played Loki and I hated it, the controls are terrible and I hated the design of the game. Nothing in that game really worked well or was actually well-developed.

Hellgate london was ahead of it's time. I missed it dearly. The customization, the classes all feel good to play

Super repetitive and lacking in content. It was fun for a short while. Jessica's cinematic was imo better than the game itself.

Here it is, fellas: the legendary hidden gems hunter giving us more obscure unknown amazing new RPGs to test.
There was a Summoner 2? I remember the first Summoner. I loved that game, it was my first CRPG.
u have the very best niche in all of gaming, thanks for what you do ❤
One game to check out is Legend Hand of God is an obscure ARPG for '07. It is an "offensively average and by the numbers" Diablo clone.
You forgot that Vikings: Wolves of Midgard existed before you played it, meanwhile I totally forgot I already played and finished it years ago and only realized that when I recently found it in my gog library with the intent to install only to see I already got all (or mostly all) achievements. At least it wasn't so bad I remembered it?!
this vid took me back, i still remember playing 12 of these games. Did not know Ascend came back, that game was a decent time waster
maybe it will be interesting. "Blades of Time"(2012) is a reboot of another game from the same developer "X-Blades"(2007) aka "Oniblade". but "Blades of Time" received greater success through the transition to a different style
Main reason I kept playing Demonica was the incest plot line. Shit was hilarious
I have played LOKI a long time ago and it was pretty decent, i liked it. 🙂
Everyone keeps saying how hard it is to make games, yet there are so many of them.
My late wife always talked highly of venetica. I might play this if I can find it.
great video, managed to get through it.. really soft spot for some of these older janky rpgs
btw, 200-oti komentar, samo jako ;)
At least Venetica seems to be finished, unlike Chronicles of Elyria.
Anyone remember Beyond the Beyond 😂 It was so fun and of course Wild Arms and BoF4
5 hours?! I'm in! I might have a few other suggestions depending on what pops up in here
Feel free to post them, mate.
got enclave and severance after watching this video, both seem awesome
If it’s not on the list, I think you should maybe check our Mark of Kri on the PS2! :D
Original Rune is missing my dude. Fantastic game
I will gladly watch every second of this!
Keep Up the good Work Bro 🎉
I really ended up liking Shadows Awakening and played it through with all three characters, the warrior gets much better down the line..
I haven't watched the whole video yet, but if you haven't covered Fate yet then you should.
I also played Loki and I hated it, the controls are terrible and I hated the design of the game. Nothing in that game really worked well or was actually well-developed.
