- In this episode we cover the genus Strophurus. We cover a handful of the species that are kept in captivity and the species that I've found in the wild. These geckos have gained popularity over the years, and it's obvious why! They're epic! Lets do it!

The wild part is great as always... But it's also nice to see your captive setups. We all do it differently, but the method you use, is how simple it can be! keep them video's commin. :-)

@@reptiliandiaries hey mate just out of curiosity where do you get your Stroph cages? Do you make them? Haven't seen anything like them around here in Europe.
The terrariums are super old man, I think they’re some junk from China but they work well! If you look in the larger acrylic spider cages they sell, they’re similar
@@reptiliandiaries thanks for getting back to me, I know its an old vid but meh always worth a shot. Yeah Ill take a look into those. I've been trying to find some decent cheap options as its been tiring trying to make my own. Good functional retrofits though man, I like them. Cheap is better than blowing the bank for a whole rack of $250 tanks. I like how the acrylic keeps heat and is light.

Houssam is a really great mutual friend and we sometimes catch up geeking out about reptiles, especially the aussie ones 😉. The Strophurus ciliaris in the video at 13:50 onwards are Strophurus ciliaris aberrans, which are a sub species/locality (separate sub species at least, I think). When you compare the two Strophurus ciliaris ciliaris and ciliaris aberrans there are very clear differences. I currently work with Strophurus ciliaris ciliaris katherine form (High black markings, stunning!), and I was finally, after almost a decade of waiting able to grab a pair of aberrans from Hamm. Another dream come true for me. The aberrans have always been one right at the top for me 😀. I love your setups, I think sometimes I am over complicating the creative process with my own.

Thanks dude! This area where the ciliaris were found is kind of right in the line of distribution. Both have been found in this area so I wasn’t sure which it was. Epic geckos though for sure! My set ups are pretty basic for easy maintenance but I try to at least make them a little pleasing to look at:) thanks for the kind words!

So they are geckos that try to mimic chameleons. In Europe Strophurus ciliaris is the most common. It seems a little convergent with the crested gecko.
I think the most common in captivity here in the states is williamsi. Very nice geckos!

good old Spinifex. had many motor bike crashes into that stuff and it is not fun 😂 great video mate and not overly different to how i keep / incubate my Northerns.

Awesome video and very informative. Do you have any experience/knowledge on Strophurus Rankini?
I don’t have any personal experience with rankini, and we were going to go see them when we were in WA but ended up going elsewhere. That being said, rankini are a typical strophurus and therefore can be kept like the ones we cover in the video. The habitat is very similar to where you’d find Strophurus strophurus and also some locations of spinigerus. Tall cage, vertical and diagonal branches and twigs, small basking spot, background temps in the low 80s. Easy peasy!

I don’t know the brand anymore but you can get them in three and five packs I think at Home Depot.

Thank you sir! Substrate is a mix of 75% normal hardware store play sand and 25% coco fiber. Lay boxes are not elevated. These geckos will come down to the base of the bush or small tree to lay at ground level in the wild, so I’ve never though to use an elevated lay box.
So the lay box mix is more soil to sand mix than the substrate as i m getting a pair of williamsi and the current owner can t get them to lay in the box and has missed so many eggs ,the 2 that he hatched 1 had deformed tail 🤔so when i get them i want the 100% success ,thanks mate
The mix in the lay boxes is 50/50 of the stuff I mentioned above. I’ve never had a single clutch laid outside of the nest box. Wet the medium, squeeze it in your fist until no water drips out and that’s a good moisture content. Keep it at that level of moisture, make sure there is a lid with a decent sized opening and you should be good to go.

Hey Frank ! Bri here again man. I have a Ciliaris coming in the mail tomorrow. How do you keep the little guys warm while you’re housing them in the deli cups man? I also want to thank you from our previous conversation I went full blown and pulled the trigger on buying one, all thanks to this awesome video.
Yo! Congrats! It’s definitely nothing professional. I either keep the cups in a large incubator or I keep them on a shelf in my reptile room which has a background temp of about 84f. So you can keep your enclosure wherever the temps are appropriate
@@reptiliandiaries thanks man! I just got home with it and it’s beautiful ! I have 12x12x18 enclosures that I want to use as it’s final set up. I have all the lights and everything from previous reptiles used in that enclosure. Think I can house the baby in the tall deli cup like you and just put it in the enclosure under the lights ? It would keep the temp of the tank which is about the same as yours
@@Stacker_Actual that should work fine. I use the tall del cups with two tiny little branches and lightly mist the cup every two days
How many times a week or day do u feed them???
I have recently got one and am not sure when to feed them
I feed three times a week for adults. Babies every day or every other day
