Bob is the only D&D centric youtuber I watch, because he never messes with the WotC drama (or if he does it's just a moment in his otherwise drama free videos). Would love to see Trevor interview Seth Skorkowsky, lol. I think they'd have a lot in common
Glad you guys let us be a fly on the wall for this chat. I really like Bob’s videos showing the reality of various D&D mechanics. To the point about being intimidated to start playing solo RPGs, that tripped me up for a bit before I finally just tried it out and had fun even though I’m not Trevor. To that end, in some of your MM&D videos you played with some unpainted minis, which helped me get over my insistence that I had to have all my minis painted before I got started.
I too am loquacious. Bob is a gem, I found him through his series about how far can he travel in a day trying to meet the D&D speed of travel. P.S. Great interview by the way!
Bob is so nice, I originally found him from his Dragon of Icespire Peak series and have been watching him since then. You making the point of the Mercer effect but on solo reminded me something that happened not too long ago. I managed to convince my friend to watch some of your videos, he is currently on season 2, and I suggested we could play coop instead of traditional since now he semi understood how solo/coop gaming works. He was quite reluctant at first saying that we won't be able to pull off the same as you do but I managed to convince him that it doesn't matter. Currently we are playing Ironsworn together and we are having a blast, its his chance to use some of his creativity since he wanted to GM for a while.
Great interview. I started watching Bob World Builder for his videos on testing the rules for travel. My friends and I used to test like that with our college game group. I continue to watch Bob for his casual approach to games. Also for his weird nemesis of planes and trains as he has many videos outdoors.
Good conversation! Bob looks like a fun person to be around. Also, interesting to know you had the "Mercer effect" for solo play, the "Trevor effect" if you will. I was already interested in solo play when you started your show, but that was something I already had in mind: Trevor is doing a show. It did help me jumpstart my own little games, but I never expected to tell a story to an audience. I'm just taking notes and making funny diaries as I go.
That was indeed super fun. And it felt like it ended right when it was getting _even more_ fun! I bet ya a lot of people let out an "aww..." when you started wrapping up the video. I love this format, by the way, where it's mostly just you guys talking about things you love, your approaches to whatever aspect of RPGs, reminiscing of what's been like playing since you've started... A conversation, really. Love all that stuff. So thanks Trevor and thanks Bob! Oh, oh! Trevor, do you know Runeslinger (of the Casting Shadows blog and RPGaDay)? You should do an interview with him!
For me, when getting into solo, your channel was the opposite of intimidating - There was a small period between making characters and wanting to get started where I was overthinking "...How do I start?" and watching the start of S1 and S3 helped me over that hump.
Regarding the Simulationist games vs Rules Light games - I admit I do enjoy some of the "Rules Light" type of games. However, I do find some issues with them. For example, the D20 might be rolled only a handful of times in a combat situation (say 5 or 6 each player) and a single die with no average can wing radically in either direction, be mostly low rolls, or mostly high. Dice pools do cluster around an average and when the hit roll is directly proportional to how much damage it does this matters and shows competence to the average ability the character has. The other issue is how HP can be reduced to 1 and the character is functioning at 100% as if they are completely unimpeded or injured while the GM describes a grievous wound being made. If functioning as if no injury was impeding the character what is healing really doing when it comes to HP. Is it healing stamina because intuitively its not healing flesh wounds or broken bones....Just my two bits for what that is worth.
This video is a great conjunction for me. Literally the only two Patreons I support. Thankfully I didn't suffer from the Trevor Devall effect... rather the opposite! I found MM&D because of wanting to learn more about Ironsworn. I watched the show and kept saying "Oh! Doing it like that looks fun" to all sorts of aspects of the game. I ended up using a lot of those tools and techniques when I GM more traditional groups. too. Oooh! Chance to be Bob and Runehammer at Pax would be sweet!
I have an embarrassment of riches, in that every one of my regular players is also a GM, so it's never a problem for me if I don't really want to run for a little while
If I may, I prefer a balance between “math rocks” and crunchy hit locations tables. Require the players to announce where they are striking. Don’t ever allow them to ask what is there AC and don’t ever just say roll to hit AC whatever. They must say what they’re PC is actually doing and then they roll. At that point it goes one of two ways. If they miss, you describe. If they hit, you tell them. Then they roll the damage and they describe the outcome.
At a couple of points, you both touch on having used the rules in a modified way and in a minimal way. This is what I experienced with Basic D&D and then into AD&D. It was a simpler system that allowed the DMs to use the system to control the game, not the game being controlled by the rules. 3e was very rules heavy. 5e started out breaking with that and allowing more DM freedom again. But then reverted, and then some.
What I want a game to do? Allow the mechanics to dictate and develop the story. Story driven gaming forces the story upon the mechanics in such a way that the dice rolls are not allowed to get in the way of the story.
Drinking a potion in 6 seconds? Try reloading and shooting even a light crossbow in six seconds. Spoiler: It's impossible if you don't happen to have superhuman strength. Also: good talk!
Personally, I try make DnD do different genres rather than going to a different game is cost. I'm too poor to buy the rule books for different games. So try make the one I do have do different things.
Thanks for having me on Trevor! 😁
Oo! Oo! I know these guys!
They must be famous after all 😛

Onmy goodness its Bod freaking world builder!!! Gonna have to watch later but totally gonna watch this ASAP!
Two of the best people. Most excellent!
Well done Trevor. Love seeing the collaboration crossover videos. Your work highlighting other game systems is awesome.
Great collab. Awesome interview Trevor! Thank you!

I watch Bob's videos often, but I didn't know before now about his background in environmental science. My respect for Bob just jumped a notch.

Found Bob with some older GM tips videos. Like his content!
the two most wholesome dudes of the DND-Sphere in one video: me likey
The One Ring
Yeah, love this content and like Trevor cross pollinating with such positive content creators. Like both of their TH-cam content.

Great stuff good to her how Bob got in to RPG I started in 1976 at my Schools wargames club

Yeah! Bob's great!
Two of my favorite DungeonTubers
Nice to see Bob on the show
I first saw bob with the potions videos 🤣 great conversation guys ✌🏼

Didn't know Bob was a druid IRL

Bob, World Builder. No "the" in World Builder.

Awesome video , hey I know you are tremendously busy … but just curious if Season 4 is going to continue?

@@GrungefolkBoy2010 Even in Latin America, yeah. At least I know it.
@@GrungefolkBoy2010I know it out of sheer nerdiness, but it was never big here in Spain
Grew up with a certain scottish super Granny, though
@@drillerdev4624 Wow Supergran!! My mind is being opened to how naive I am in thinking UK tv doesn't get shown else where lol

Dream blunt rotation.
I love Bob!
great video - I'd love to see a chat between you and @TheGentlemanGamer comparing systems
