William Dun (1792-1861) was a Scottish minister and mathematician. Born on July 22, 1792, in Scotland, he became known for his contributions to the Church of Scotland and his work in mathematics. Dun served as a minister in various parishes and was noted for his scholarly pursuits, including mathematical research and education. He passed away on May 5, 1861. His contributions, particularly in mathematics, were significant during his time, though detailed specifics about his works may require further historical research.

The fact that the floor lid to that grave was open, means someone other than yourself has explored there before, sad state of decay and forgotten

The hand holding the key is the Dun family crest. Their motto is Mecum habita which means Dwell with me. The Dun-Waters family eventually moved to England and settled in the Okanagan, British Columbia. There is a Fintry blog from October, 2022 that explains a bit about the family. In the blog, the writer states: This estate was owned in the 18th century by William Dun, J.C. Dun-Waters’ father. He built a castle (Craigton House)…….. with extensive stables but never lived in it, preferring to live closer to the village in a smaller house. The castle has since been demolished and the stables now converted into a beautiful house in which (an) eccentric gentleman lives with his five cocker spaniels.

Thanks for the information! It amazes me how many wealthy people build things then just abandon them…..only the extreme wealthy have this privilege. He wanted to live closer to the village? Well…..I think it’s ironic that he (now) is abandoned!

Can you imagine being one of the builders of that tomb.
Getting the materials out there and then living there day after day building it.
No hot shower or soft bed after a long days work

This is a great find ! I managed to find pics of Craigton House which was built by William Dun in 1860 but sadly demolished in 1946. It seems he was a local land owner but I haven't found any info on the symbols on his tomb. What an interesting mystery, thanks to you both .

Look into the emblem. Find out what special meaning the knights helmet hand and key means. It should also tell you what family that crest is registered to. Look under heraldry. Lots of families have a crest and shield. When looking into my family I was given a long list of important people that were in my family.

The Macdonald family became tenants of Craigton, also known as Craighouse or Castle Craig, in 1762. The final Macdonald in Craigton, the retired Donald Macdonald, died in 1900.

James Coltard Waters- married Mary Susan ShAnd Waters 1852 at Glasgow. She died in 1857 aged 30 in Dorset. James born 1828 in Craigton Stirling. His mother was Janet Dunn. The chap in the tomb must be his father.

Were he a knight we'd see the prefix Sir to his name. There's a pic of the Dun family house from that era in the Craigton archive. The hand on the helmet with a key in heraldry denotes religiosity. He was a devout believer in the resurrection, further evidenced by the money spent on the preservation of his mortal remains. Cast Iron artisans were ten a penny back then. The Dun family of Craigton were considered to be regular middle class. If they lived in London they couldn't have afforded a tomb like that.

Often, such huge sarcophagus would be built in place with the tomb built around it and the coffin, usually wooden, put in last, the iron inner sarcophagus and ornate lid suspended above until afterward, then lowered and sealed. The people in the floor may have been put in anytime after the tomb was built, even before the main tenet was interred. I assume that that is not a graveyard or cemetery but the grounds of a Great House, there seem to be no other graves in the area and Laurels were quite popular with landscapers of the 18th century for Great House scenery. I can't believe William Dun would be forgotten like that, but it appears he did make plans for that eventuality.

Damn but I'm good! as soon as I saw the fence, and then the entry gate into the mausoleum, I guessed mid Victorian. . . And yes that is a stunning bit of castiron, I agree it probably was painted when new, most likely the same colour as the stone work of the tomb. You are doing your ancestors a bit of a disservice though, mid to late Victorian was the epitome of the foundryman's skill, they had the tools, I don't think we could do work like that today, at least not in a timely manner. And gawd when I saw the ring I was yelling at you not to touch it . . .

This has to be one of the most unique mesmerizing Explores I've ever watched! ❤️
My mind was just blown & racing wondering how you two found this awesome find!!
He had to be of high importance. I can't believe there's nothing to be found about him!!?

Says "William Dun of Creighton" Died 1861. Check local or area church, etc. Records. Perhaps "Dun" was part of the "Knights of the Round Table." The "key" emblem & knight symbol is significance. Perhaps he was a Duke or the like. The placards at the front should be restored for more unfo. The "ribbon lettering latin like"-- maybe can be deciphered.

What a fantastic find. I believe the symbolism of a hand holding a key on a tomb represents holding the key to heaven. In other words, being able to enter heaven. There might be other meanings though!

Absolutely mind boggling!!! Definitely Bram Stoker vibes🧛🏼‍♂️🧟‍♂️🧌, or JRR Tolkien even. The sarcophagus is beyond description. The empty crypt is kinda disturbing I must say (sorry but I think I’ve read too many vampire stories lol). I think the key on top of the helmet is some sort of heraldic symbol. The presence of “mantles” surrounding the helmet suggests that it’s associated with a family crest or possibly a professional guild. Love, love, love these types of explores. I used to do paranormal investigations at abandoned cemeteries and I don’t need to tell you the kind of vibes those places have lol! Thanks to you both for a beautiful and eerie video❤

Omg, it's beautiful. I am disappointed that you didn't look in the hole that was in the floor. I wanted to know what was in there. For someone to be laid to rest in something that grand is unreal. I bet when it was first done, it was gorgeous. Great find guys, so cool. Stay safe you two and watch for ticks.

Unusually for a Mausoleum, William Dun chose to put windows in it. Before his death he apparently joked: “Won’t it be fine to look out on resurrection day and see all you poor Fintry folk trooping by”

I've researched everywhere I can think of and have had no luck. In many instances a key being held in an outstretched hand like that, or even two keys, one crossed over the other, symbolizes the key(s) of knowledge. In all honesty Dale, either you or Lisa should reach out a chapter of The Knights Templar in England. Yes, you read that right. The Knights Templar do exist to this day, contrary to stories from "history", the Templars never ceased to exist and there are chapters now worldwide. They may not have the exact answer, but should be able to help guide you in the right direction! 😉
Please let us know how it goes!

This mausoleum is so steeped in Victorianism, revivalism of a then, 150 odd years ago, romanticised past! It speaks of vanity, decay and yet persisting to exist and rot for many decades, if not centuries. The stone (marble) tablets become unreadable, the pompous tomb is covered in rust. As I mentioned below or above, this William Dun is difficult to fathom, while his remains obstinately loom in the thickest of woods and his newspaper still is being issued daily under the name it has had in his day.
And the crypt beneath appears to be empty. W. D. designated it to the burial of descendants of whom no-one went. I wonder whether any descendant has visited the place or cared for it for a century or more.
    Very strange.

This looks like the Knights of the round table. I was told stories that there is a tunnel under ground that led to a castle. The castle itself if it is still standing had a doorway they could open and go into. It was also used an escape route. Although it looks like some rebuild the structure. There is supposed to be stairs that they would ride on a horse or carriage down into it.
