An odd entertaining comedic scene that did nothing to move the narrative or had little to do with the plot but that was typical of the entire film. A lot of arbrary moments that were never quite explored to any conclusion. Poor Things was a series of pieced together events that revealed several deep issues yet none of them followed through. Many of them were often contradictions. For one, her character seemed more retarded at first rather than a newborn innocently becoming aware but it was her blunt unfettered naivety I felt was portrayed as too cold & cruel with no sweet innocence or wide-eyed curiosity. She was often emotionally one dimensional, IMO. Later attempts were made to humanize her but by then the story began to drag & the many narrative ideas remained unresolved. Pretty to watch & quirky but far from the best thing since sliced bread. Ended up being mostly just icing without much cake! I find it interesting that people care less about seamless intricate complex storytelling & more about surface decoration.
This will go down as one of the most unexpectedly funny double toasted review of all time. From the world building to monkey bone. I love that Martin antagonizing Julian is pure gold
I'll never trust another movie critic if they don't reference "Monkey Bone" -- FINALLY!!!! But seriously, I went into this movie expecting a cute Wes Andersen comedy (based on the trailers). When the body horror and graphic sex started up, I was kind of upset. Then the story unfolded and Bella's character began to develop and Ruffalo became hilarious. By the end I was all in, and could not predict where it would go. It's like Wes Andersen and Tim Burton and Guillermo del Toro created a nightmare baby that was still somehow loveable. I'm still thinking about the story. Love ya'lls reviews!
Director is genius. He has lolita and girl on girl mysoginistic fantasies and he presented them in a socially sanctioned way. Hope lily gladstone or sandra huller win instead of emma in a year where greta gerwing was snubbed an actress who is playing the harvey weistein game shouldnt win.
You summed it up with that Tim Burton statement in the beginning so well. I was trying to find a way to describe this film to my mother and the best I could with was "it reminds me of Edward Scissorhands... but not really."

Justice for "Monkeybone"! Despite all it's issues, that film had some incredible scenes and visuals. Also, the doctors chasing the dead guy to steal his organs is pure comedic gold.
One of the best movies this year, one of the best feminist movies I've ever seen. Mark Ruffalo doing his "Stella!" yell was hilarious. Emma Stone's about her 2nd Oscar
People are raving about this movie, but it just seems so unappealing to me. As I’ve gotten of older I’ve gotten better about not trying to force myself to like something just because other people like it, or because it’s popular. Some things just ain’t for everybody, and that’s okay.
I love the director but wasn’t going to be swayed because people gush over something. These days people just want to gush. Such short memories when saying this is stronger than the favourite. It’s good though. Not as weird as it seems from the trailers. Thoroughly enjoyable but not a must see imo.
I agree with everything you guys said. I’m more hit or miss on Yorgos’ work from what I’ve seen as I loved The Favourite but was pretty mid on The Lobster and Sacred Deer, but this is my favorite movie of his and one of my favorites of the year though I can get how it won’t be for everybody. Usually I can’t stand movies similar to this where it’s just to weird and artsy fartsy but think what they’re doing is so profound to where they come off as pretentious to me, luckily as you said Yorgos knew when pull back and for a movie as weird and *horny* as this, it actually have heart to it and I saw Chris Herman made this comparison where it’s kind of similar to Barbie in its themes of self discovery and creating your own path. I did get Tim Burton vibes from this, mainly Edward Scissorhands and Frankenweenie, but also a bit of Terry Gilliam like Imagination of Doctor Parnassus. Emma Stone was amazing and it’s a performance that could’ve gone south and at first I was like, “Is this going to be female Simple Jack from Tropic Thunder?” but she brings a lot of nuanced to the character to where she made it work and it’s may be her best performance. And Mark Ruffalo & Willem Dafoe were also excellent as well, and it’s funny as hell. It’s also funny how I saw more people at my screening for Poor Things than I did at my Aquaman 2 screening 😆
A lot of the silliness is actually the story. Obviously the art direction and choreography are original to the movie, but the story and its tone come from the novel, which is a dark, grotesquely comical satire of Victorian literature, including gothic novels like Frankenstein and 'mannered' romance novels such as those of Jane Austen, in which characters comment throughout with observations of how society works. It's a little frustrating that directors tend to get credit for even the stories and characters of their movies even when they don't write the script or the original story if it was not an original script. Poor Things seems to be the most appreciated of Alasdair Gray's novels and he deserves credit for having imagined this unique narrative.
Lathimos is pretty consistent. I dug this more than The Favourite and The Lobster, but less than Dogtooth, Alps and Killing of a Sacred Deer. One of the better films of the year, for sure.
My wife and I thought the preview looked interesting. Last minute, we invited her conservative 70 year old mother and even more conservative aunt to join us. When the nudity, masturbation and sex started, I was like dang... we should have seen that Willy Wonka movie. Good movie though lol
I loved this film. This was also the first movie I've seen where no one in the audience moved or talked during the entire end credits. We were all doe eyed and speechless. Omg, I also laughed at the R word being used only because the phrasing and context was so ridiculous. No audience member should be afraid to laugh at what makes them uncomfortable or surprised

Good world building: Showing two factions of mutants tearing a city apart whilst civilians flee. This leads to the construction of Sentinels by the US government. Bad World Building: Finding out about the intricacies of the US government, military and how the sentinels were constructed. The former sets the stage for a story about Mutants fighting for their right to exist and why people are frightened of them. The latter answers questions that add nothing to the story. no part of me was prepared to click on this video about a movie i've never heard of and learn that it is frankenstein meets lolita meets bioshock with a dash of monkeybone. incredible.
This movie Poor Things is not a good movie. It’s pretty much about her learning the world through sex. Explicit for no reason at many points. I wasted my time on this. Luckily the tickets were 5 bucks a piece. Crazy thing is it’ll be on the Oscars list, which says a lot about the Oscars. 🤦🏾
Its a good movie. But sight unseen I know I wont ever got past the fact thAt a woman with the brain of a baby/toddler/infant is having sex with an adult. I asked on this comment section whether her brain is fully developed when she is having sex and nobody answered.
Weird movie, but so good. Probably my favorite of the year. Solid acting, directing and a cool approach with the themes. Emma Stone deserves another Oscar for it, but I expect some competition with Lily Gladstone. My prediction is it wins best pic and Lanthimos gets best director.
This weird, raunchy, hilarious, inspiring hell of a movie is an instant classic, without a doubt. Most original movie since "Grand Budapest Hotel", but so light-hearted and with positive view to life itself a movie which will never gets old. I was stunned! Anything less than a rain of Oscars would be scandalous.
No, oppenheimwr and killer are better written. Hopefully the only oscar this ped0 movie gets is Emma Stone, and even then lily gladstone still has a chance. I didnt enjoy that she has the brain of a toddler when she has sex.
I feel like there is A LOT of sex & nudity in the movie, but I feel like if you’re watching it at home by yourself or with a significant other or if you’re European, the amount of sex & nudity may not bother you as much as it might in a theater with other people
Europeans don't mind it when middle-aged men have sex with women with the mind of a child? They see it as teaching the woman-child the ways of the world? Then I'm glad I'm not european.
Was in absolute amazement of the set design for the steam boat scenes. The aestheics of the skies and sea felt like something out of a Smashing Pumpkins video. Elements of the fantastical, surrealism, steam punk and antiquated in a motley array of styles. Full Price for me. Eager to see what else this director has in store.
Which black actress will agree to do the sex scenes? Which black actress will agree to star in a weird movie like this? Black actresses don't take roles like this. They always play it safe.
I'm late to this review, I saw the movie a couple weeks ago, but holy crap! JULIEN, man, I laughed at the same part and other moments where no one laughed and I kept feeling like "oh boy, I am the most hated person in this theater."
Question that will probably go unanswered: when Bella Baxter has sex in the movie is her brain fully developed? Because it seems to me she's like a toddler in most scenes and a grown person shouldn't have sex with an undeveloped child.
@@laurellairose9314 sight unseen, going by trailers alone all her scenes she seems mentally too young. I ak not essily offended but as a father of two teen girls it creeps me out. still will watch. Have you seen the movie
Yep it's super fucked up. I think by the time she runs off with the lawyer, she's a teenager mentally, but that only makes it slightly better. Max was perving on her when she was definitely still a toddler mentally, and the movie tried to say he's better. The only decent dude was the black guy on the boat, and even he was cruel. The men were all terrible. Great movie though
@@AirQuotes I saw it. She wasnt a teen, more like a preteen. Honestly the brothel thing was unnecessary and yes Im a dude but i dont enjoy girl on girl gratuitos scenes of characters who dont identify as lesbians. Many male directors try to add such unnecessay scenes like in birdman, poor things, dracula and they get away with forcing their actresses on that without feminists noticing. If i was made to kiss a man in a gratuitous scene that adds nothing to the movie id call out the director. Emma is playing the system and approving it Great movie but sex was gratuitos and emma was exploited.
I wish the director had directed True Blood. Never have I watched a series with so many hot women, and thought, "man, can you keep your clothes on please?" Also, the writers of that series were not nearly as clever as they thought they were.
Poor Things is nothing like Monkeybone Julien, it does have influences with Bioshock and Dishonoured games in terms of world building and universe. This was a near masterpiece, it’s on Disney+ now.
All of Yorgos' movies are pure comedies. Deranged comedies, but, they are that They are right, Tim Burton has lost it and hasn't been weird good since Sleepy Hollow
Julian is taking with women the attitude he criticized from Nolan fans. My wife and I did get the intention, we didn't missed the point, but the director has ped/ ideas and put them all in this movie. This is lolita except lolita is a teen. Bella is a child, maybe even a toddler when she has sex. And wife has very valid points against the story, not the movie as she appreciated the artistry, but the story is a p000do fantasy.
Bella is NOT a child or a toddler. She may have a child's mind, but in the body of a fully grown-up woman, with all the hormonal activity and urges that come with it. So the fact that she's curious about it actually makes sense. Where's the p3d0 fantasy in that? What are your wife's "valid points"?
@user-pq4fc1mc7q grown woman my ass, the mental age is of a child as it's literally the brain of newborn what activates it. It's metaphor of course but the body might be grown but the mind is of a baby. Clever from Yorgos to make people think this is artistic (which it is) so he can deviate the attention of his real dark fantasy. Lilly gladstone lost for representing how women are, Emma won for representing women how many of us would like them: sexually ready for any of us, no standards whatsoever and beautifu.l. If the main actress was fat and bald let's say olivia coleman the movie wouldn't get our attention. But many wanted to see hot emma stone naked...you failed to see the intention but some of us aren't naive.
So does she have an adult sophisticated brain when she has sex? I feel like all reviwers are skipiing over this. Sounds like a toddler is having sex with an adult.
THE MOVIE WALKS A FINE LINE as CLUMSILY as BELLA's first baby steps. I left so let down & feeling like the poor thing was me having gone to see it! I view the mainstream praise as a reflection of our times where superficiality vs substance has become the norm. If there's enough surface glitter, lip filler, butt padding & marketing ferocity then there's a good chance of success. Like a Frankenstein monster, Poor Things was a series of pieced-together events that touched on several deep social issues yet followed through on none of them. Like a Frankenstein who's threads are were loose vs sewn tight., much of her character was just plain contradictory. For one, her performance seemed to be retarded at first rather than a newborn innocently becoming aware while her unrestrained bluntness & unfettered reactions seemed too cold & cruel and lacking any sweet naive childlike innocence or wide-eyed curiosity. She was often emotionally one dimensional & distant, IMO. Later attempts were made to humanize her but by then the story had already begun to drag & the many narrative ideas remained unresolved. SO MANY CRITICS HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME REACTIONS to the film so I know I'm not just being purely subjective. EITHER YOU CAN IGNORE ALL THE BROKEN PIECES of the Story or they stand out like a sore thumb. Maybe the pretty nature on the surface camouflaged the holes in the film or the quirkiness but it was far from the best thing since sliced bread. In fact it ended up being mostly just icing without much cake! I find it interesting that people care less about seamless intricate complex storytelling & more about surface decoration. Some directors can do both. Although there were a few funs scenes, none of them validate the flaws of the overall film. At times her actions are CONTRADICTORY & hypocritical to a Story that was CONVOLUTED in it's exploration of many social themes which were never resolved. Many scenes were pretty but ARBITRARY and did little to progress the narrative! Her FRANKENHOOKER phase was wild & a bit intense but it was mostly contrary to her strong free-willed independent nature. Concepts of misogyny, pedophilia, prostitution, abuse only serve to SHOCK rather than reveal any true insight, empathy or heroic sentiment. For all the men bashing she then freely allows a woman, the Madame Dwarf, to use & abuse her. Saying nothing about contraception and STD's. Often I was just confused to whether or not to laugh or frown. Nevertheless the IMAGERY is stimulating to watch but the STORY just gets SLOW around 3/4 the way through. After all the controversial SEX, when it should become full of intrigue, conflict resolution or drama it stalls when her new found "ENLIGHTENMENT" BOAT TOUR tries to get Political, to no successful conclusion except to END with a GOAT SACRIFICE & sick operation to show REVENGE towards her estranged Father, a stranger to us & her the entire film only to end with a, so far, non-romantic relationship with a FEEBLE wannabe Frankenstein Scientist Husband who unsuccessfully did to that poor girl exactly what was done to Bella. WTF!!! I LEFT UNINSPIRED, unsympathetic, irritated over the whole experiences! > Please GO WATCH any TERRY GILLIAM film * or PIERRE JUENET's "Amelie" or 'City of Lost Children" (in French) or even DEL TORO'S "The Shape of Water" to experience truly strange, VISIONARY, eclectic, quirky, enriched, yet fascinatingly cohesive FAIRYTALE STORYTELLING. Heck you can even rewatch the classic "The WIZARD of OZ" to experience a film of this style, done EXCELLENTLY!

Ah yes, the Euros are more sexually sophisticated old chesnut. There is such a thing as gratuitous sex.
@JDotwill I am also waiting for this movie to come out. I will watch it all by myself without my family. I love Emma Stone. She is a superb actress
As a European that watched it in the cinema it didn't bother me. Frankly it became kinda boring by the end. I don't need 30 minutes of sex scenes.
My favourite film of 2023
Saw this yesterday. Really enjoyed it, but not as much as MonkeyBone😂
This movie is super bad if this movie was bad for everyone else people would hate it but honestly disliked
@@ReesesPrice what? That sentence structure made no sense to me and your point was lost due to the fact.
Lol
I knew you hated world building! Lol
Looks like a family film at times😂 if Salvador Dale's work was for families hahaha
Honestly, I thought it would be more realistic to have a WOC portray this character, given the historical nature. They treated woc like lab animals.
True
My exact thought when completing this movie.
@@christinac.3973 yes women of color alwaya have the short end of the stick
Which black actress will agree to do the sex scenes? Which black actress will agree to star in a weird movie like this?
Black actresses don't take roles like this. They always play it safe.

I recently came across this show.... Great show. U guys hilarious. Thx
Best reviewers. Not as jerkish as Jahns but way funnier.
Imo the debauchery was part of the point the movie was trying to make about humanity.
Mark Ruffalo is basically playing a Terry Thomas character (a brilliant old UK character actor)
I'm late to this review, I saw the movie a couple weeks ago, but holy crap! JULIEN, man, I laughed at the same part and other moments where no one laughed and I kept feeling like "oh boy, I am the most hated person in this theater."
A new Phantom of the opera is here... Yorgos did a gothic , set , film great .
Question that will probably go unanswered: when Bella Baxter has sex in the movie is her brain fully developed? Because it seems to me she's like a toddler in most scenes and a grown person shouldn't have sex with an undeveloped child.
It was after she discovered masturbation
This aspect made me sooo uncomfortable and took me out of the movie tbh
Emma is playing the system and approving it
Great movie but sex was gratuitos and emma was exploited.
I wish the director had directed True Blood. Never have I watched a series with so many hot women, and thought, "man, can you keep your clothes on please?" Also, the writers of that series were not nearly as clever as they thought they were.
So you never watch Game of thrones?
@parareefaelias656 3 seasons. H
It is the weak writing that makes True Blood the lesser of the two.
Poor Things is nothing like Monkeybone Julien, it does have influences with Bioshock and Dishonoured games in terms of world building and universe. This was a near masterpiece, it’s on Disney+ now.
All of Yorgos' movies are pure comedies. Deranged comedies, but, they are that
They are right, Tim Burton has lost it and hasn't been weird good since Sleepy Hollow
miss peregrine, charlie ans the.chocolate factory... Miss peregrine is so underrated
I respect Julian for his Monkeybone comment 🤷♂️
Same, and hopefully his "korey hates worldbuilding" becomes a recurring joke
I kept saying "It's good world building but is it Monkeybone-level world building?"
But many wanted to see hot emma stone naked...you failed to see the intention but some of us aren't naive.
when i first heard about this movie i was like oh yea this one of them types movies got hollyweird written all over it 😂🤦🏾♂️
Loved this movie-for me it's a 4 star film. From its fantasy elements, its call backs to horror to its feminist themes.
Ernest goes to Jail. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Rebel moon was world borrowing!
Ahahaha true
FYI: Mark Rufalo
is like 5'7" Tall.....
No Shit!
all my homies know korey hates worldbuilding
We knew it!
I can definitely say-. I haven't seen that story premise before.😅
Sounds so original
I've heard of this movie but had no idea what it was about it's now the best movie I've seen in years Bella was primitive but also sophisticated
So does she have an adult sophisticated brain when she has sex? I feel like all reviwers are skipiing over this. Sounds like a toddler is having sex with an adult.
Monkeybone. Fuck yes
Why some people in the comments seem to agree with the worldbuilding comment? I never pegged Korey as a worldbuilding hater.
I think they're joking.
@@7thsygn martin and julien maybe, but the comment section took it at heart.

Saltburn is crazier than this movie.
Saltburn was a really good film. Ending didn't need to spell everything out like it did though
Please ask them to post their review of saltburn here
It's definitely better.
i was doing perfectly fine having forgotten 'monkeybone' exists. now i'm not so sure
9:07 Martin nailed it
He always do.
He always does.
This movie felt like an excuse for SAing a child because they look like an adult
It’s not really the born sexy yesterday trope but I can see why you would think that
I couldn’t tel if that was Stephen King or Willem Defoe in the thumbnail
Cruel but I agree
fish eye lense shot vs Snyder's slow mo
Fish eye any day
THE MOVIE WALKS A FINE LINE as CLUMSILY as BELLA's first baby steps.
Visually on how it was shot but still weird.
Can’t wait to see this!
If there's one thing Korey hates more than world building, it's Training Day :)
