I attached wet dry sandpaper to a plastic clipboard to make an inktense palette. I can scribble the inktense on it then pick up or mix with a wet brush
When I saw those BIG globs of paint I thought I hope that’s the new set of Maimarieblu - I ordered those immediately while watching the Christmas video and I’m waiting patiently for January’s delivery. Very nice artwork!! Thank you.
I have these inktense pencils, too, and they just sit on the shelf. How you use them is inspiring, thank you so much! I guess if we let ourselves just TRY some of our supplies, we might decide we LIKE them! lol
This is terrific! 🤩 A fresh technique to make the best use of some materials I hadn't considered using together. Very much enjoyed watching you show us your creative approach. Please do another subject for us using this technique if you are inclined.🙏
Love that I found this video. I have used Inktense pencils a fair bit but have only just really got into watercolour so this is a fantastic way to use both. Thanks
WOW!!! Fantastic!! Thank you so much for this video! I need to get my Inktense out again and you showed me a different approach with them! Happy holidays
I love this. I’ve been doing watercolors for several years now trying to loosen up. I love the loose look but still I’m drawn back to adding some detail. I’ve been using my intense pencils for journaling, but think I’m gonna start combining the two techniques, in my larger pieces. You always inspire me.
Thanks once again Steve, somehow your channel always excites me and make me want to take my pencils out again. Having the Inktense wooden box set myself, your line and wash technique gives me some nice ideas for the holidays. Although I myself would stop after the misting, being affraid to mess things up. Keep it up and enjoy the holidays sir, thanks for already many years of inspiring tubes.
Happy Holidays!!! I love all your work and all your videos!!! I love Inktense pencils!!! My grandson used to call them Grandma's magic pencils :) I mostly used them in a couple of different ways: to draw & sketch .. then leave as is without activating or to activate the colors with a waterbrush. I also have the original full set of Inktense blocks (and the paint pains) and/or to use my Inktense blocks the way you use watercolors to create paintings while sketching things in with the pencils. I am currently learning to use Daniel Smith watercolors! I love their sticks!!! I am looking forward to seeing how you use them with your plan to create under drawings along with watercolors!!!
I use the two electrics shown in my Amazon Store (link in the description listed in miscellaneous). The Schools Smart is great for all standard pencils and the Xacto is good for oversize or odd sizes.
@@mindofwatercolor Thanks so much. I just learned a new feature of Amazon - didn't realize I could see products you recommend like that. Meanwhile, those products do not ship to Australia. Perhaps because of the different electric plug? Good to know such products exist though & I'll look for similar. I've been getting some pleasing results since following your spontaneous painting tutorials & recommended you to many artistic friends! Thanks again.
Love the combination technique. Looking forward to more with Inktense. Was wondering if you could talk about/ share your ideas on choosing colors for an adult coloring book page. I did watch your previous videos on adult coloring books. But wanted to know more about your thought process of how you would go about completing a page. Ty.
Excellent! I love your videos! I recently purchased some intense pencils and I’ve been wondering if they could go ok with watercolour, and you’ve certainly shown an excellent pairing of them. Out of interest, have you tried heat setting them at all, and, if so, did it help minimise that small amount of feathering?
Heat setting is a fabric technique so it probably would work very well on the already activated pigment (paper is 100% cotton after all). Good suggestion. But the other problem is unactivated pigment. It's a challenge for line work especially to get it all completely activated.
Loving your way of explanations, I decide to try wc. But I need an easel as I am not toll I wii chose one which have this part I can adjust lower than level of table.[ Following your link on Amazon.] Than I sow the butterfly screws! I better prefer yours which does better job and not hurt my fingers. Did you replaced them or you get new easel?
It's probably better stated as adding some tone or shading using pigment from the line (at time stamp 2:10 for example). Setting in the line is just activating it without any shading.
hi, great sketch of this Revolutionary soldier, do you have a download pic of sketch? Is it on Patreon? I cant draw as great as you do! thank you and Reese
@ I am one of your patreon members, I would appreciate if you have time that would be grreat! I love all your work and great info for beginners like me. I rarely see your type of art out there, very nice, I am so glad you and ypur family survived hurricane helene , I lived in northeastern TN in Jonesboro for 10 years and people are still missing, But I believe western North Carolina got the worse of it, maybe next time “they” will let the people know before opening the dams, whoops once awake you never go back to sheep. Blessings to you and Merry Christmas to you as well, keep up the great work.
Do you always spray the paper first when you’re using watercolors? I’ve never done that. I just wet small sections with my brush - so this is something new to me.
I use the two electrics shown in my Amazon Store (link in the description listed in miscellaneous). The Schools Smart is great for all standard pencils and the Xacto is good for oversize or odd sizes.
Steve, I have a technical question for you. More than a year ago I purchased your M Graham watercolor set. On the color wheel I have Quinacridone Rose at the 8 O’clock position (primary red). Dioxazine Purple is barely on the red side of the 6 O’Clock position. I’m trying to find a suitable color to place at or very near to the 7 O’Clock position (the Tertiary color Magenta). In M Graham’s selection I think Quinacridone Violet 158 is the nearest but slightly bluer than Magenta apparently. I guess a simpler way to ask my question is, what pigment is 1/2 way between Quinacridone Rose and Dioxazine Purple? I’d like to stick with M Graham but I’d be happy with a different manufacturer. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.
Quin Violet would be a good choice. I tend to go more by what I'm likely to use rather than a perfect halfway point. If I need the reddish leaning hues more often then I would lean that way. In actuality you don't even need a halfway point since a simple pool of each brought out on your palette (Quin Rose and Diox) would easily allow you to mix between the two.
Thank you Steve for this video and a different take on L. & W. I recently updated my Inktense pencil set from 12 to 36. The package arrived okay but inside the mostly plain brown box was not one set of 36 pencils but two. Oh my, what to do. Obviously the shelver and the picker at the warehouse didn't read the small label on the box that said TWO. I didn't mean to steal from Amazon but the truth is that at 75 years of age I don't have the energy and/or desire to correct the mistakes of others. I'm on the hunt for someone to gift this extra 36 Inktense pencil set to as I doubt I'll live long enough to use them up myself. Say a prayer for me that God will put some deserving person in my path so that I can unburden myself from my guilty conscience. Enjoy your channel very much. Love the Bible quotes at the end of the videos. Merry Christmas to you and yours and your followers too. Cheers from Toronto, Ontario 🇨🇦
At the end, the hat and coat still look "white"...was that your intention? I ask because often when I watch you paint these examples, your chosen range of values differ widely from how "I" would have done it from the chosen reference. Artist license, I suppose.
Yes, intended. Line and wash sometimes takes this approach to feature the line and drawing more. Granted it's not strictly realistic as light and color is concerned.
“I paid for it didn’t I ?” It amazes me how many times you and Reese give us a laugh. Not to mention while we learn artistry. Happy Holidays 🎁
Thanks Essie. 🤣
I've seen TH-cam artists use Inktense in so many ways, but this is all new and so impressive! Thanks.
It's a fun combination for sure.
Steve, you are amazing! Thank you for sharing your talent with us who can't afford a "proper" teacher.
You’re very welcome!

I'm so glad you ended up liking the inktense. I love working with them.
I love inktense. They are so versatile! Thank you for featuring them.
you have inspired me to dust off my inktense set, just beautiful colors, very suddle colors.
Glad to hear it!
Ditto!!
I’ve been using Inktense since 2002 and absolutely love them! I do a lot of watercolor painting with them. And thy last for a long long time!

@@ooman56 exactly. I waited too long.
Stunning. I have the inktense but hadn't thought to use them in this fashion. Thank you for this video and new inspiration for my inktense.

It really works well, thanks for sharing
Absolutely amazing! I do like the effect of the inktense on dry paper. Thank you! And thank you for glorifying God. ❤
Thanks. I appreciate the kind words.
Love it! Line and wash is why I wanted to learn watercolor in the first place. Thank you for making this one!
You are welcome, glad I could help.
Merry Christmas. Please keep these illustration type videos coming!

That was quite interesting, a lot of detail, with a nice finished picture.
Whoa...Steve! I have to try this now. Never heard of Inktense. Thanks for the demo.
I love this painting, can't wait to try my Inktense pencils like this
I love the palette color combination you are using. I may have to invest in that set.
Very nice. I like inktense and want to try it.
Ill have to show this to my husband! Recently laundered the cotton parts of his uniform (costume) after his latest thing at Ft. Morris, Sunbury.
Really loved this tutorial. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Incredibly beautiful. Love your thoughts also.

I loved it. Not sure why I let it sit so long.

It's all about how colors interact with each other in light and shadow. A LOT of preference there.
Can you do a video about choosing a limited pallet with colors / paints, for different types of paintings?
Excellent! I love your videos! I recently purchased some intense pencils and I’ve been wondering if they could go ok with watercolour, and you’ve certainly shown an excellent pairing of them. Beginner here. Could you explain the meaning of "toning the line?" Is it just setting it? Thank you and I love your work!
It's probably better stated as adding some tone or shading using pigment from the line (at time stamp 2:10 for example). Setting in the line is just activating it without any shading.
@mindofwatercolor thank you!
I usually draw without tracing or using a grid. Do you have any tips for maintaining accuracy with a subject like this? Thanks.
Compare constantly. Alignment of features, size of positive shapes and negative space, plum lines, parallel alignments. Relationships basically.
@ thank you

I do either. Wet in wet gives a different effect than wet on dry. Both are useful.
What do you use to sharpen? I seem to always have issues
