I recently had the most extreme neck pour experience with a lagavulin 16 than I'd ever had before. It was almost all alcohol. No smoke, really no flavors but alcohol. By the third dram (on another day) all the flavors were there in spades. I've experienced a poor neck pour many many times, but i didn't think anything that extreme was even possible. Congrats on the growth of your channel and happy new year. - Cheers
Thanks for this Erik, more and more whisky drinkers need to learn and know that time will affect our experiences. Some whiskies need a few months to open up and some will do it in much shorter time. Cheers!
Great video, I tell people these tips in the store I work at. Too many times I here I didn't like X or Y after one drink and I have to explain all this. I've have had a few people come back and thank me because they ended up liking the bottle after either finding a way they like to drink it (ie water or ice) or just giving it time to open up in the glass and the bottle. Love the videos as always!
After my grandpa passed away ,I sampled a bunch of whiskeys he had in his collection, all opened bottles ranging 30 to 40 years old and they were all fine. One heart breaking incident when my Uncle lived in France and gifted me a 60 year old bottle of cognac.... it was totally like cooking wine.. the cork had gone bad :(😪
Health and happiness to you Erik! You have been an influential part of my whiskey journey that started in 2020 during Covid when I decided to really get into scotch and exploring whiskey beyond what I was drinking occasionally at the time prior to 2020 which was basically Bushmills, Jameson, Kilbeggan, Evan Williams , Old Grand Dad, and Old Forester products. I have learned a ton from you and have discovered all my current favorites watching your reviews! Hope you enjoy your impressive collection through out 2025! I never thought I would be a peat head, but boy do I enjoy Islay heavily peated single malts. I currently have a collection of 20 bottles of scotch for 2025 that i don't have to worry if they are duds because you have reviewed them and scored them 85 to 90 pts!!
Erik, like the concept of comparing a freshly opened to a long opened bottle. I've been researching this topic but there doesn't seem to be definitive answers. I guess it's subjective just like tasting whiskey. Also, love the Oa Ardbeg expression - it doesn't get as much love as the Ten, Wee Beastie, Corry but I really enjoy this one! Have a Happy New Year!
Dam! Great party trick turning the empty into a new full bottle Erik. On a side note i like the practical advice and opinion of the dregs of the bottle and I agree. Have a happy prosperous new year.
Happy New Year Erik ! I enjoy the An Oa too, it's a lovely drop. I find blends moreso than Single Malts seem to lose a lot their punch if they are left too long to oxygenate in the bottle. The worst I think was a Macleans Nose. Absolutely lovely whisky, but I reckon I had around a third of a bottle sit for around 12 months & it was flat having lost a bit of it's oomph.
Red Breast 12 has dropped its richness past half way in the bottle on the two bottles I have had. I did try the spray gas to stop the issue but like you said it didn't work
It is difficult for most of us to properly judge neck pour vs shoulder pour vs tail pour because it takes three open bottles of each whisk(e)y to properly evaluate the differences. However, several years ago, we (me and 2 others) were able to judge a tail pour vs a neck pour of the same whisk(e)y and we all agreed that the tail pour, although still very drinkable, was considerably duller than the neck pour of the new bottle.
Happy New Year. I just broke my Bunnahabhain 2021 cask strength cork. I think I'm gonna invest in some synthetic replacement corks. I was curious as to how the bottle held up all the way down to the end.
Merry New Year. I never thought of the An Oa as being more rich and sweet than the 10. Very interesting. I have a tendency to decant off 100ml to a small bottle once I get way past the middle or when o think the oxygenation is optimal and stash the sample. Then I could try to kill the heal without regrets. I'm limited for space.
What are your thoughts on putting the last 4Oz in a Boston round's or proper liquid storing jar? I've taken this approach and its saved me a lot of space in the long run. Also just got a bottle of An Oa on auction for ~$50, been enjoying it.
Peated bottles hold up better that's for sure I had a ardbeg 10 that held up really well but peated and any other ones will eventually oxidize and go flat that's a fact if you gas them it will stall the oxidation and preserve more flavors in my opinion.

Funny you should mention the corks, because the only bottle among hundreds of mine to ever break a cork WAS the An Oa! Haha Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! 🥂
Happy New Year, Erik

Ardbeg An OA is my favorite Ardbeg. I always top it up with the gas after every drink.
Is removing air from a whisky bottle a better way of preserving it? Hope you can do a video on this.
Nope. Just make sure the cork doesn't go bad.
What are your thoughts on putting the last 4Oz in a Boston round's or proper liquid storing jar? I've taken this approach and its saved me a lot of space in the long run. Also just got a bottle of An Oa on auction for ~$50, been enjoying it.
I would just use sample bottles or Tabasco bottles. You can buy them on Amazon.
I’ve been looking for a scotch with that bbq smoke. I’m not a fan of the ashy smoke either
Try Highland Park 12-year-old or cast strength

Hahaha nice editing not to fudgey .😉
First! All the best for 2025!
Thanks for watching! 🥃
