A Triumph TR3A to Warm Up a Cold Morning

- This Tuesday morning’s highly caffeinated Morning Coffee original film series serves up a hot-pressed shot of espresso in the form of a sinister 1959 Triumph TR3A.
We find our focused petrolhead protagonist, Stadler Patrick, standing roadside, looking out over one of many idyllic valleys in the French countryside. As the day comes to life in the early morning light, total silence is only interrupted by the singing of birds and cool blowing winds-that is, until Stadler marches with purpose to the driver’s door of his old British roadster.
The crunch of gravel under his soles stops at the metallic click that announces an open entrance into the cockpit, and a deliberate pull of the low-slung door being shut precedes the less-than-sedate drive ahead. Stadler’s demeanor makes it clear he’s on a mission to motor with earnest enthusiasm. Settled into the saddle, he twists the key in the center dash-mounted tumbler and gives the long pedal a jab of throttle, abruptly awaking the inline-four cylinder to a chattering idle.
First gear is engaged, the clutch is released in opposition of throttle application, and forward motion begins as the needle in the rev-counter climbs. Perforated brown leather driving gloves tightly encase the white knuckles within, gripping the intricate black and polished metal steering wheel. The pace quickens.
The Triumph’s sealed-beam eyes spear warm light as the fender-to-fender-wide grille devours the winding rural B-roads of Haut-Rhin in France's greater Alsace area. Banging up and down through the four-speed gearbox, Stadler locks up the front disc brakes, killing the built momentum. Paused at a fork in the road, our driver clenches his hands tighter around the wheel with the distinct sound of distressed leather wrinkling under pressure. He contemplates which path to take.
The snow-embanked route is chosen after brief deliberation, and the spirited sprint continues. After a scenic ascent up the mountainside's ribbon of roadway, the TR3A’s tires squeal out of view. This is driving. This is automotive nirvana. This is better than the very best French roast money can buy.

now that's the way to drive the TR3! Drift into corners like its made to do. One of the quickest in corners in its days. And the tr2 won the first Macau grand prix. Beautiful car!

Filmed in France, great! My country! A super fast daddy! :-)) It's located in "Alsace", near Germany. And, as we say in France for the music (it's working too for video): "If you think it's too fast, maybe you're too old!" :-) But, the man who drives the TR3A is always young! Great video, thank you!
I enjoyed this video and understand what people are saying below. That said, this owner fits the car, just needed an old racing helmet and goggles to complete the look! You could see the intensity in his face, every shift with a purpose, I felt like I was sitting right there in the car. Its all about driving a slow car fast and captured right here, thanks Petrolicious!

This was my father's first car he bought used with his, at the time, life savings, and his was also black. His had a failed 2nd gear syncro and a Kool-Aid bag in the gas tank, that caused many hours of debugging with replaced fuel pumps, and guesses about hydraulic lock. One mechanic working on the car (to find the fueling issue) leaned on the taillamp, and the glass lens popped out of the gasket, smashing on the ground. The cut down doors were great fun, allowing them to drag Coke cans on the road throwing sparks (tin cans back then). When he came back from a break from college (he kept the car at home), he asked my grandfather where his Triumph was. He responded, "I did you a favor and sold that piece of junk and got you a Valiant." :^o

I loved the detail in the sounds of this video... It just needs that sound of the car driving on a crunchy pebble drive.
Nice film. Every video doesn't have to be a ten minute story behind the owner of the car, etc. I suspect the editing was a result of the rough roads leading to an unfortunate amount of shaky cam.

So the TR3 might be slow, the guy driving is using the car as intended and is enjoying every minute.

The best 2:15 of total information for the senses sans the smell from British oil or feel of brisk morning air. Love the style of filming with quick segments filled with detail which lead me into 4:30 of pleasure just to review the smallest details, well done once again.
the Camara work makes the car seem faster and more dynamic then it actual is also stock breaks are really good
both Austin Healey 100/4 and triumph tr3 had big four cylinders with 100hp..
The Healey's unitized construction and superior looks,make the tr3 look like a bottom fish ,in the styling department.And the tr3 as most of the Triumph sports car range had very old school ,separate chassis and body. But both had very torquey Big Fours.

While the visual style of this video is great I don't think it fits the car well at all. A Group B homologation special or an 80s hot hatchback would have been better matches for this.

This is how a sidescreen TR should be driven. Currently restoring two of them, hope they will drive as good as this one.
Great edit and perfect sound design. A lot of work went into this early morning shot of caffeinated goodness.

Having owned a couple of TR3A's it only makes me want to have another one. Buy yeah, a story would have made it better.
....I have been driving mine ('59') for 52 years....well maintained, NOT restored....Still haven't found one of those mirrors that attach to the windscreen frame...Starting to need one due to my age.. Drove through 2 winters in Northern Ontario with no sidecurtains (1970/71).....West coast, Canada (now)

Good video, I was surprised by the style. I love my Triumphs so this was a nice surprise. Liked the sound the most, not sure about the fast and choppy editing, maybe a little longer on each shot.

There needs to be enough time for ones eyes to move across the lines of the body.
I liked the intro and the close ups, but the shakey action shots make it hard to really appreciate the car.
I love Petrolicious but this edit gave me a headache. Too much jerkiness.

Filmed by the UK Top Gear team?, show a little of nothing, half a second per cut, not for me, would rather hear the drivers story, how it came into his hands ect, and detail shots.

Agreed. The story of the car and the current owner aren't done justice this way. And I'd rather have some solid footage of actual driving for a couple of seconds than some engine sounds mashed together with wild cuts and shots.
Are they trying to keep up with the Fast and Furious style filming? I agree, no good.
was thinking the same thing; the editing sucked on this one. what looked like amazing footage chopped up into two second scenes with the audio all over the place never really hearing the music of the Triumph.
Nice car. If you see this kind of editing of someone "dancing" you know they can't dance at all. Chub chub Gwyneth Paltro comes to mind as a guest star on some stupid TV series, that was the last time I attempted to sit through that highly promoted piece of drek. BTW, sound, I'll turn it off next time, but there won't be a next time.
I think the quick cuts were to disguise how slow a 1959 Triumph is.

I feel like I am watching one of those action movies where you just see a bunch of close-ups of fists, shaky cam, and blurry motions, but can't really tell what is happening. I much prefer long, steady, and well planned shots.
