3-4 years is the typical schedule for our dude (most recent Silk sonic 2021), and Lady Gaga just dropped a duet with our king so...sooner or later he's gonna drop something. cream of the crop takes time to cook is worth the wait than regular frequent drops imo.
I think Harry styles (when he’s active) has a massive grip on society and social media. I think “As it Was” is the third most streamed song on Spotify. He def has a spot at the table of male pop stars
I think we're excluding the enormous rise of K-pop and male popstars. I feel like teens mostly have posters of those bands rather than the American artists.
Another thing about kpop, beyond just liking a specific member, fans can also feel invested in the dynamics between the members themselves. I don't even mean it in the sense of shipping (although that does happen) but just the different interactions that happen between members
I was going to comment the same. Kpop is designed to fill those parasocial relationships and those crazy standards, and you have groups that fit the likings of every age range. And also the shows, kpop performances are insane.
What happened to Male pop stars? imo *1.The impact of Hip-Hop. 2. "Pop" being a dirty word to male acts (& their male fanbases). 3. Male pop stars trying their best to sell to a (straight) male listenership and not be labelled "for the girls".* Rappers were already seen as cooler and more masculine than singers, and had bigger male fanbases, so once the rappers started singing themselves, it altered the game. Many singers in the 2010's fused a Hip-Hop/Urban aesthetic into their Pop music, or marketed themselves with Hip-Hop production or styling, while male pop stars going the conventional route were labelled "corny" & "for the girls" - which is how many young men & boys dismiss K-pop today for clinging to dated Pop formulas. Two of the biggest popstars of the last decade: The Weeknd & Post Malone, both used hip-hop as an ingredient in their pop music. Post Malone has the most diamond selling singles : 20x Platinum “Sunflower", “White Iverson,” “Congratulations,” “I Fall Apart,” “rockstar,” “Psycho,” “Better Now,” and “Circles” with a huge (straight) *male* fanbase. He's undoubtedly a massive pop star, but people don't think of Posty as "the quintessential male popstar" because they don't realise how much artists like him and The Weeknd have reshaped male pop stardom to make it work _for them._ The fact imuRgency didn't mention Post Malone by name in this video, proves my point. Maybe he doesn't even think of PM as a male pop star, and that's by design. There aren't as many male pop stars, because they don't wish to be labelled "Pop" in the first place, and when you do, it's almost taken as a pejorative. This leads into other conversations about Pop being coded as 'feminine', while Hip-Hop, Rock, Blues & Country are coded as 'masculine', but this comment is already getting too long!😅
@@Tarriq I agree about Drake, he’s pretty much equal parts rapper, equal parts Pop star. He literally had a song called “Pop Star”. And once Drake slow jam melodic raps became a viable alternative to listening to r&b crooners, male R&B vocalists took a hit. Why listen to an actual male r&B vocalist when you can just put on some Drake - two birds one stone. That did a lot of damage to r&b’s commerical viability in the 2010’s imo and they tried to compensate by adopting more hip-hop aesthetics themselves and delving into trap production, which meant r&b became indistinguishable from melodic hip-hop and lost its identity.
@@nameisamineIs that why I feel like we don’t have, especially Black R&B young up and coming singer dancer guys really out there in the mainstream? This really struck me watching the Usher tribute at the BET awards with almost all women performing (and Childish Gambino, to your point about the rappers being the singers). I feel like for a tribute you want younger acts that would have been looking up to the person being tributed. When I tried to think of guys who could do an Usher type act to one of his songs that would be good and that people want to see perform at the BET awards, the people I could name are more Ushers contemporaries than his heirs.
The key is that with current Pop being mostly marketed towards straight women and gay men, the standard for Pop girls is to be aspirational/relatable while Pop boys have to be desirable. Except atm, relatable is the name of the game in the arts industry in general, so the Pop girl marketing tactic just works a lot better. Also explains why Ed Sheeran is never seen as a big culture force despite being very popular/influential. He doesnt really fit the typical desirable pop boy archetype.
His voice doesn't match his face/body. Also British. His pronunciation on some words in his songs is horrible. Sounds American except for a few words. Ruins the effect. Can't listen to him for that reason alone.
Generally speaking, tides change all the time. Right now, the music industry is definitely at a point where there aren't a lot of popular male pop artists. But times will change and it'll eventually even out
Just coz u make noise doesn't mean u are not there Unfortunately ppl assume that to be the case Male artists don't make controversies or noise or come out on camera to say ohh I'm so tired of this celebrity lifestyle to generate fake sympathy. Male artists don't do all these bs hence ppl assume there are no Male artists
Omar Apollo, Conan Gray, and Steve Lacy have the potential to be huge male popstars. I feel like Harry Styles is already one. These are just my opinions.
@@KP-2004 Are you also ok with white and Hispanic gay men using aave? Aave like “chile” and “tea”. It seems like you’re ok with Omar using aave. He ain’t black
@Dolphinboi I do have a slight problem when non-black people use it, especially when they use it wrong. At the same time, though, I can't tell people how to talk. I would hope they don't use aave, especially when they use it wrong .
I’m surprised Ed Sheeran wasn’t mentioned his sales and tour numbers are pretty big. I think he is definitely a main pop boy. Also Justin Bieber was a main pop boy at one point.
@@jadacampbell9331 Ed is a gigantic popstar but y'all are too thrown off by the guitar and scruffy hair to realise his music is pure pop, and think he's this alternative singer-songwriter. He's actually hated in those circles for being "too Pop", and the singer-songwriter crowd largely dismiss his discography. Ed acknowledged this a long time ago, and accepted that he'll never be cool enough for them so he stopped trying. Have you not listened to "Bad Habits" it's straight-up four--on-the-floor Dance-Pop.😆
I think Bruno Mars just balances it the way he wants to, like he already has a great discography and is famous enough if he wants to make a comeback with a banger he can but at his own time, like maybe he's just chilling and carefully crafting masterpieces... he's not the in your faces famous, and it's nice, u have something to look forward to
Ppl underestimate his discography He has 150 million sales 15 grammys in just 51 songs Nobody has that kind of insane song to sales ratio. he's selling 3m copies for every song and winning a Grammy for every 3rd song
Bruno is truly a master of his craft, and I think that’s why he takes his time on all his projects, he doesn’t want to rush anything because he truly cares about putting out the best he possibly can
justin bieber is definitely this century’s/generation’s main pop boy. i think purpose era especially was definitely a learning experience for everyone, in terms of what success to aim for but also what limits to set as an artist and a person. i think he’s definitely earned his right to slow down his career after all he has accomplished but even when he has been active in the past few years, he has still been breaking and setting records. he is still someone who can influence the pop landscape and i think it’s crazy that a lot of people wouldn’t consider him a current male pop boy
@@UNSAMU3L i disagree because he's big for sure, but he's not definingly massive. he's on the same level as tate mcrae, utterly massive, but not "you cannot escape him on the internet" levels yk
@@jenjoestar. 😂😂 we don’t have any western male pop stars who girls completely fan girl over like that anymore. Maybe we have to wait a few years for that to happen again
Seeing Omar on here is such a surprise to me. In my head he’s still a small indie artist. I saw him for the first time in 2018 and the tickets were only like $20 at a small venue. I don’t think he makes conventional pop music but I can see how his newer stuff would appeal to a wider audience. I’m happy for him though and can definitely see him getting bigger!
Idk BTS is criticized so much by stans and they are really dominating the charts even by their own individual members are on top of the pop idol boys specially when it comes to Jungkook and Jimin who are really getting up there with the best of the best and actually competing on the charts, but Americans seem to dismiss their success just because they are from Asia
I think Conan Gray has the potential to rise up, but probably will be one of those artists with a cult following that slowly grows with each release. I became a stan of his this year after his most recent release. He has similar music in style to people like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift (Singer/songwriter, diaristic "relatable" lyrics), and more recently Dua Lipa and The Weekend (80s revival), and has proven that he can and will change up his musical style to fit what he's interested in to grow as an artist. He has the distinct eras thematically and visually, changes his personal look (not drastically but he still does) with every era, and has been adding in more in terms of dancing and performance as well. And has been relatively open about his life and struggles both in his music and publicly given that he basically grew up on TH-cam similarly to Troye Sivan. I do agree though that the ability for male stars to keep their privacy a bit more means less people know about them, they aren't in headlines as often for "controversy" which unfortunately does drive the attention economy. Beiber and Harry Styles remain relevant generally because their personal life is constantly being speculated and talked about. For Conan, he hasn't had any big controversies and he hasn't publically dated anyone high profile (he continues to go out of his way to not reveal the other famous person who he did date last year). Additionally, while he is queer, he very adamantly refuses to label himself, and makes everything he says and writes about in relation to romance/relationships gender neutral. So unlike Harry Styles, who is often put on blast for "queerbaiting", Conan maintains a loyal queer audience and avoids the speculation, but at the same time he isn't so blatantly open about his queerness that it draws the shock value like Lil Nas X or Sam Smith or to a lesser extent, Chappell. He generally only ends up in headlines if it's in relation to Olivia Rodrigo since they're close friends, but at the same time he also refuses to piggy-back off his friends fame by collabing. He's often not included in the pop dialogue (as a whole or for the men in general) but I do think in some ways that may be purposeful. After having your whole life online since you were 9, I think he values not being as big as some other main pop acts because he wants to maintain a level of privacy and autonomy not afforded to larger acts (we all know how hard it's been for Chappell and many others). Hell, I only learned about him/his music outside of his Met Gala looks because my irl friend recommended one of his newer singles to me, and then his new album knocked my socks off when it dropped. He has a loyal and dedicated fan base that sell out arenas like MSG and the Kia Forum for him, and he definitely has the talent in spades, but I RARELY see people talking about him online outside of his niche small fan circles on Twitter and Reddit (maybe it's on purpose, maybe his fans want to gatekeep, idk). So, I see him getting bigger, but maybe not so big. Sorry for the essay, I just rarely see Conan talked about anywhere and this is my way of spreading the message :)
As a Conan Stan I feel like his current state is optimum where he is able to sell out 20k+ venues like MSG and maintaining a level of privacy and not much of the weird fame disadvantages. I do see him rise up in like 5 years when the GP wants to catch up to the lore or feel FOMO for the tight knit audience he has, sort of like how Taylor Swift shot to even higher levels post folklore and able to maintain that level of fame because of the lore and how her fandom is kind of "if you know you know" and GP was eventually sucked into being deep Swifties.
Female artists have simply raised our expectations across different levels & created a formula that most male artists can't replicate. In particular, I feel like theres 3 main factors pop girls posses that only certain male artists have: a dedicated fandom, an interesting artistic image (i.e eras), & strong music that fans & non-fans can both enjoy. The only male artist I feel checks off all those boxes is the Weeknd. I consider Bruno Mars to be a rare exception bc everyone love his music (so basically he's the Adele of male artists). Also I can kinda imagine certain pop boys with cult followings (i.e Troye & Conan)experiancing a similar career trajectory as Charli & Sabrina in the next few years, just give them time to cook.
@dorino9057 He can barely sing. The same old yelling vocal all indie male artists do. And he has no incentive to improve because young woman fans stan him for being cute.
You so right about the Weeknd. That’s why he’s been my fave artists for so long. Justin Bieber was hated on and Bruno mars became too mainstream for me to deep into even though I was a fan.
did you just say the pop girls are creating strong songs? most female pop stars don't even write or produce their own hit records. Plus, these aren't unanimous hit singles, they're just touted by their extremely small, but dedicated fan bases. Y'all live in echo chambers/bubbles. Most of the world aren't listening to Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift or even Billie Eilish. They're artists that just have loyal and rabid fan bases.
@@saintkevinofficial I kinda agree & disagree. Stan culuture can definitly help the sucess of a song/album but that doesn't guarentee if a song is a hit (depending on how you classify what makes a hit). For example, Ariana Grande's "Yes and?" might've done well on the charts but many fans & non-fans alike consider it to be one of her worst songs. By contrast, we're seeing some artists who've been in the industry for years despite being praised by music critics finally experiancing sucsess. Sabrina, for example, has been in the industry for over a decade but Espresso is her first real hit & is considered "the song of the summer" in several countries. Considering how Sabrina used to have a very small fandom & was even the victim of a hate train, it's a huge 180 for her. Perosnally, I'm not a fan of the song & consider myself to be a casual listener of Sabrina but I can see this song being on a "greatest hits of the 2020s" in a few years. As for the songwriting, I think we're starting to see a bit of a shift there. There's a larger expectation for singers to contribute to the songwriting & some have become well known for being very invovled in it like Billie, who very rarely works with other writers & producers (besides her brother).
@imurgency i do recommend a deeper dive into the J-pop and K-pop artist experience as you will see the most equalized application of these standards. Guys and girls are expected to maintain weight, have parasocial relationships of international scale (see Weverse,Bubble) and have a new era every 6mos-1yr. The next Western King of Pop will follow this playbook.
@1607Adi_Manz I'm also more into Kpop, but my favorite Japanese artists are Vaundy, Fujii Kaze, and Sirup. Ateez made a great song ("Hush-Hush") with Jpop group Be:First. For groups, I also like Ballistik Boyz, Fantastics, Wolf Howl Harmony, Yoasobi, Lucky Tapes, and One OK Rock.
Problem with j-pop, if aren't independent, there is a good chance you won't be global because of how prideful japan is and how they don't make distribution easy, it's better now but 10 years ago, you would have to look through every corner to be able to download jpop music you liked
i think there are plenty of major male pop stars but because they are men not extremely young like prime JB we don't consider them pop stars. expamples: JB, the weekend, bruno mars, harry styles, Jungkook, Ed Sheeran (formally drake)9 these are still major heavy hitters but not considered pop stars, also i dont think male pop stars had to follow the pop star arcs that female pop stars had to, for example that stupid ass color theory, or hair theory
I literally was just thinking today how weird it is I’ve never seen a breakdown of a famous male celeb ✨in his colour season✨but every female celeb has everyone and their grandma talking about her colour theories 😭
@@horribledevilgirl exactly and they never have to stick to one aesthetic, style or even if they do its not criticized or called lazy or inconsistent, they are able to just BE but pop girls can never catch a break
Michael Jackson’s shadow is so big that no male star can exist without being a cheap version of him. I think only Theweeknd/Bruno stand on their own. The same happens with Madonna and the rest. If someone thinks my opinion is wrong I would advise to listen more and watch madonna and Mj videos. You’ll see it for yourlself
Personally, I'm a big fan of the pop boys, especially the queer pop boys, and have found myself following a lot of their careers consistently for years, even going on a decade now for a few of them. Troye's album was one of the best western pop releases last year, Conan's album has been on infinite repeat this year, Lil Nas X always kills it, and Lauv has a super catchy discography. I recently got into Omar Apollo's recent album this year too though I personally don't know if I would classify his style of music as "pop" but that's neither here nor there. And don't even get me started on BTS (who I also consider queer pop boys but that's another nuanced convo for another time). They have been, are, and will remain un-fucking-stoppable and I don't think the pop scene will be prepared for their inevitable takeover once they make their comeback in late 2025/early 2026.
@@MaraMara89 This is gonna be super oversimplified, but for some context: S. Korea is still a largely conservative Christian country, gay marriage is still illegal and openly queer people are often stealthily blacklisted in Korea media, so you will not find any direct evidence of them coming out not will they likely do so any time soon considering they're in the military which will imprison people for same sex activity. That being said: RM- has used male and female pronouns when referring to romantic partners in his music, constantly is highlighting queer artists on his socials, has been the most outspoken about his support of the community and is speculated to have had an ex-boyfriend sometime in the past. Suga- most likely bi/pan, has probably come the closest to openly stating it. Is very blatant even back in 2014 that he does not care about the gender of his partner but that the vibe is right. Also describes romantic partners in his music with male and female pronouns. Jin- Nothing as big as some of the others, however he is pretty open about his love for traditionally feminine clothes, colors and more. J-Hope- also not much for him, however he has a lot of friends and connections in SK's queer and trans community Jimin- has talked openly about how he doesn't align with traditional male gender presentation and although he uses he/him pronouns a lot of his works heavily suggest a preference for androgyny and gender-nonconformance. He also has openly expressed attraction towards men and women though has not stated directly. Taehyung- is also heavily involved in the SK queer community as well as queer communities abroad. Has also expressed attraction towards men and women and is often seen sporting clothing and jewelry and art specifically from queer designers, etc. Jungkook- also not as blatant as some of the other members, however he's expressed attraction towards men and women (and has been open about once having a crush on Namjoon(RM) when they were trainees) and also chooses to express himself physically in gender noncoforming ways as well. RM also stated in an English interview that none of the members had a gf or a bf at the time, which implies that at least a few of the members would not mind dating men or nb folx. Now I realize none of this can really be taken as "proof" nor should it be used to qualify whether or not they can make queer art however BTS has a massive queer fanbase for a reason and I think that's because many queer ARMY identify with the way they've chosen to express queerness throughout their career.
Kpop idols often do some same-sex flirty stuff as "fanservice" ("kpop idols being gay" will probably deliver some compilations demonstrating what I mean) but it also wouldn't shock me if half of BTS was actually queer. Their "love yourself" era (2017/2018) is the most queer-coded in my opinion (title tracks: DNA, Fake Love, Idol). But considering how conservative the Asian market is and that they are still their company's main cash cow despite being on military service hiatus: We might not find out for the next 5+ years or something.
@@shinycheyenne thanks for the long answer :) I also feel like BTS member(s) might be queer, simple statistic and at least one of them would fall into ;) Their openness about supporting queer people and talking about artist they like (Jungkook talking many times about Troye Sivan early in career come to my mind first) seems like they at least are open minded (really hope it isn't calculated publicity stunt). Seeing how close members are I wouldn't be surprised if one/some of them is queer and others talk about support also for them to know they are there for them (hope that make sense as it is early Monday morning, I am commuting to work and my English is more than little rusty) I sometimes think about interview where Namjoon said he wanted to be a father and Suga told him "you still can" - it did't seemed like simple "time passes, I am getting old", but more: I haven't found right guy to raise child together yet and in SK that might be hard. I really hope that when all of them will be out of military and they will successfully come back at stage and maintain their status they will also have space to openly be who they want to be (of course if they will want to). I would die with "Shocking news - all members of BTS came out as queer"
Though people may only sort of know a few songs from Troye Sivan in America (I'm also American), I've seen him have a LOT of international recognition. His name pops up in the Kpop and Thai BL community often. I've been a Troye fan since his early TH-camr days and I just love that people around the world know his name and body of work 🥰
He is famous enough to be mentioned by BTS' Jungkook as favourite singer/one he wanted to met for long time and they actually collaborated on some songs. I am Polish and was at Troye concert at music festival this June - many people seem to come mainly for him :)
As a shawn mendes stan (i was here for the latter half of his peak in like 2018/2019) I've been in and out of SO MANY music phases (K-pop, only female artists for like ages, etc.) . Lately though, I've been obsessed with a lot of male artists like Hozier, Benson Boone, Noah Kahan, Shawn Mendes (again because our boy is coming back!!!), Myles Smith, David Kushner, etc. etc. I noticed that despite the absolute BANGERS these guys are pushing out, they really aren't getting as talked about as alot of other great female artists! And while I do ofc love to see women on top, I can't help but feel a little sad that the male artists i really like aren't getting the same recognition. I do definitely agree that a big part of it is that women are analyzed more in the public eye, and therefore more likely to have "scandals" and be pressured to be the face of EVERYTHING, while people kinda only care about male artists for their music and not personal life (usually). It'd be nice if we could find a balance that'd give female artists more privacy and maybe some more visibility to the male artists coming up with great music!
hard pill to swallow: jimin or jungkook (of bts) (or any member atp) are #1 on billboard and million sellers but non-fans dont care about asian artists. lots of xenophobia still going on..but there is a reason why the bts fanbase is so huge. people just love to ignore their talent and want to dismiss the success bc „the fans are toxic“.. like okay? if MJ stan’s had twitter in the 80s they would’ve been toxic aswell😭😂
no offense, but i struggle to see heterosexual men, en masse, going out of their way to listen to him… that’s what’s holding him back in the american market.
The new intros are EVERYTHING!! ❤️🔥I’m hoping singers like Shawn Mendes and Ruel will be in the Pop charts 📊 I wonder every once in a while what male singers are doing. Love the Pop girlies right now can’t complain
THANK YOU for recognising how kpop is literally doing the same levels as the western pop girlies 😭like yess, kpop boy groups cannot get away with the things straight pop boys be doing, like girl the SCANDAL that would envelope the group 💀💀. like in general, pop girlies, pop queers, and kpop acts are just... held to higher standards than straight pop boys on average. there's exceptions, such as bruno or the weeknd where since their general discography is considered so damn good, if they drop a flop they'd get FLAMED and immediately shadowbanned to the "flop era" basement, but on average, both justins (bieber and timberlake), benson boone (FIGHT ME HE'S MID OKAY), jvke (no offense), MAX (i hate him so much), charlie puth (ick) are just... not GIVINGGGGGGGG us the same level of quality, and DEFINITELY are not being held to the same standard. Charlie Puth is a zionist, and he still has a ton listeners. if sabrina carpenter were a zionist (she's not btw), her career would've been cooked WELL DONE. Max Martin trying to actively ingratiate himself with kpop, barely any one besides kpop fans batting an eyelash. but if chappell roan went out and said "im trying to capitalise on kpop groups, and the idol's fame to make me more famous", she would make the 5 o'clock news. RI-FUCKING-DICULOUS. this applies to music in general, how can Drake still have defenders after how Kendrick lyrically assassinated him like, THREE TIMES. but god forbid chappell roan yell at an asshole on the red carpet, she's the one "doing too much" while Drake gets off???😭 their music also is just... meh (ON AVERAGE, NOT A GOLDEN RULE). timberlake justin's new album was mid as hell, jvke is just kinda... there(?), charlie puth's formula could be written in textbooks as a chemical equation, the bieber justin hasnt left his flop era in AGES, and even GOOD pop stars like the weeknd, like bro his music is good, but i wish there were more differentiation sonically between eras. like, the growth is there, but it's not there to the same extent of say, beyonce on renaissance versus beyonce on cowboy carter, you see? edit: THE GASP I GASPED WHEN YOU MENTIONED OMAR. I DO NOT LISTEN TO ANY OF HIS MUSIC, BUT SOMEHOW HE LIVES IN MY HEAD RENT FREE
i recently saw omar apollo and he is a performer!!! he has the charisma and the vocals for it. he deserve his flowers!! as a fellow brown girlie, he is my representation lol.
I feel like male popstars such as Harry Styles lasts longer because he's appealing more for the female gaze rather than the hyper-masculine gaze. This is also why Kpop groups have such an appeal as well because they're catered to the female gaze. This is just speculation of course, but I feel like that's why some male pop stars last longer than others. Especially in the western world of music.
Why is no one mentioning Lewis Capaldi what? As well as Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes, but even Hozier kind of rose to fame again. I think pop boys are less about the flashy performance and more about songwriting and music (either just them with a piano or a guitar). Kind of like Tom Odell with his emotional piano pop. I think that also has to do with women being more sexualized.
As someone who is in the K-Pop community as well, I feel there’s some correlation between the western and Asian fandoms here. The male stars in K-Pop have huge legions of female fans, and they are devoted to them. As for female K-Pop stars, it’s not about trying to get the loyal fanbase but more about a song that hits mainstream popularity. This hits a wider demographic and its perceived that the male stars do not capture as large of an audience. Side note, I would personally argue that it’s more to do with fragile males being afraid to like male stars for the fear of being labeled as “gay”. As a gay male myself, I think that might have something to do with why female stars hit a wider popularity and male pop stars struggle to achieve a broader fanbase unless they put out what’s considered a more “masculine” sound like rock or rap.
Kpop. They took over with reviving the boybands, and focus in dancing and looks. Plus this must be specific to the past year, bc I was definitely hearing tons of pop buy guys in the past years. But I guess not as many new ones are popping up in the last year.
First two Bruno Mars albums were so good. I listen mostly rock/metal stuff but in last weeks I'm addicted to his music. Cool guitars, sick bass and amazing vocals, he's the best pop singer for me since Michael Jackson. Good to see him back even in one song with Lady Gaga, hope he will release more good stuff in the future.
6:22 This whole privacy thing reminds me of the difference between British popstars Harry Styles (*1994, youngest member of One Direction) and Robbie Williams (*1974, youngest member of Take That). Robbie can walk around more freely in the US (because he's only famous almost everywhere else) but he is *not* mysterious (and neither is his wife). Oversharing is kind of his thing.
Someone else mentioned this but the last few major male pop stars have been Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson. I would say Harry styles but I don’t think so personally. It seems like a lot of the males in each genre have been disposed of , and only appear periodically. Males in pop and Rnb ( speaking in a mainstream sense) don’t seem to be able to have major demographics anymore. Other than rap , the females are definitely dominating the industry. But we’re getting a new generation of music, I can definitely see artists like grent Perez making it big for the long run.
The problem is that Main Pop Girls aren't just popular singers, they also perform in the genre of "pop music" which is traditionally a more female genre. This definition means we ignore hugely successful and popular male artists who perform outside the genre of pure pop music, like Morgan Wallen, Post Malone, Kendrick, Drake, etc.
i think it's wild that joshua bassett wasn't mentioned. I get the public may have their opinions about him, and he's still a smallish artist, but he's a current, male pop artist. not a star, but maybe one day.

I think gen z artists as a whole are pretty boring, I'm not really invested in these popstars, even with Sabrina and Chappell, It's like I've seen it before. Both talented but nothing really new or fresh. Male popstars aren't a thing because, well, none of them wanna be popstars, most of them wanna be rappers, especially the white men for some reason. Gen Z as a whole aren't doing nothing new, just nostalgia bait, as VMAS last night, nothing new. Also one big factor people seem to miss the the parasocial relationship aspect of it. I feel like men do not engage in parasocial relationships with their fans unlike female artists and kpop artists Gay men are also a huge part of it, idk why they're riding a straight women, I understand not supporting heterosexual men, but also being mean and rude about their own fellow gay artists such as Sam Smith and Lil Nas X, should be talked about, i understand some can come out as cringe but if y'all gonna consider Addison Rae of all people gay icons, then Sam smith era masterpiece. I genuinely don't know the worship of heterosexual women I rather worship queer men rather then a straight person lmaoo
I feel like David Bowie was very good at the reinvention process. To the point in an old interview he described giving himself a psychological break over “killing off” Ziggy Stardust
I also hate the expectation for a popstar to be a good dancer!! Not everyone is Janet, Michael, Normani, Britney, etc… I can think of a few who (maybe hot take) really can’t dance and didn’t really try. Artists like Prince or Mariah didn’t dance lol and imo Whitney couldn’t dance and that doesn’t take away from the fact that she was IT 💛
Only person I can think of is Bruno Mars and Harry Styles. Other than that nah. Well hold on....Kpop boy bands well...tbh girl groups are more popular too idk any new boy groups but i know older boy groups. It's weird. I think the Weeknd is thee closest too.
i feel like, when harry styles dipped after love on tour ended, we got a decline of male pop stars that weren’t just 2010s hit makers. i feel like the emerging pop boys could be troye sivan, omar apollo, conan gray, or steve lacy, but most male stars are already in rap or country music. plus, we’re getting more of its boy band spirit from k-pop than we’ve had from america so far
Yes, I agreeee! I was trying to say this, very inarticulately, on another YT video about authenticity in music. The video was breaking down how Katy Perry's inauthentic approach to all her music is what's alienating her from connecting with fans and why she's bombing lately, and ultimately how, when you can't be real and relatable with people and show people who you really are (aka bear all) then that's what happens, and like yeah katy's flopping, but the fact that the girlies have to be 'relatable' and show their 'human' side in order to succeed or whatever is a DOUBLE STANDARD. Those same expectations are not placed on male artists/musicians. At least, not to the same degree.
Honestly, real life’s numbers don’t match this perception. In fact, I would say male artists are generally more popular than female artists! At least, with the average person. For example, here’s the top 10 biggest songs in the US this year (via Talk Of The Charts) #1. Lose Control #2. A Bar Song (Tipsy) #3. Beautiful Things #4. I Had Some Help #5. Lovin On Me #6. Not Like Us #7. Espresso #8. MILLION DOLLAR BABY #9. I Remember Everything #10. Too Sweet There’s one song by a woman (Espresso) and one male/female duet (I Remember Everything). The Weeknd is the biggest hitmaker of this decade so far with a nonstop string of hits since 2020. Then, we also have Harry Styles with his massive last album and tour. Bruno Mars finally released a new song under his name in 5 years and look at its numbers and he’s also touring stadiums currently. Coldplay’s current tour just grossed 1 billion. Post Malone back to big numbers after his last two albums underperformed. Just some examples… Also a lot of male artists are not exactly “pop”, they are scattered other genres. Noah Kahan, Zach Bryan, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Hozier, Playboi Carti, etc. I would say they are “pop boys” too, they are just not traditional pop Stan twitter and the whole discussing around pop music online is overwhelmingly made of, lets be real, gay men. And, for some reason, male artists’ imagery and their references (which is usually very masculine) don’t really appeal to gay men. Look at The Weeknd’s and Travis Scott’s visuals and aesthetics… (and in fact, the majority of fans of male artists are usually women) And now, with the death of monoculture and everyone living inside their bubbles, people can easily ignore stuff they dont care about. Which is why I think a lot of people in this stan/pop music online universe don’t really know, for example, that Benson Boone is one of the biggest new stars of the year.
“Not impossible because we see little nas x doing it time and time again” he’s a c-tier pop star at BEST. There has never been an openly gay male pop star that’s achieved top tier success, regardless of the greatness of their work. Even elton john only gained “some” notoriety as a singer by hiding his identity…then lost it upon coming out. Success/growth in pop music stems largely from girls “idolizing” young female singers, and “crushing” exclusively on straight male pop stars. Girls aren’t largely “idolizing” gay men with the same passion as people like swift or Eillish. It’s the same reason we’ve gone so many decades without seeing a number one hit from a woman over the age of 50. Young girls aren’t idolizing older women the same way they do with young women - even though we KNOW some of the greatest female legends of all time are still making music over the age of 50 - largely without recognition. It’s a farce to claim young female artists have the most expected of them, and that they’re seeing all the fame because they’re somehow working harder to achieve that. Older women and gay men are examples of people who are plainly and simply barred from that level of success regardless of what they do.
Didn't Lil Nas X have one of the biggest hits in Billboard history? I think what you mean is the hype around the public persona that artists like Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish or Taylor Swift are experiencing. But is that kind of hype desirable? I think it's doing more harm than good to the artist.
@@nehalilisays lil nas x has sold a total of 12 million records throughout his career. Is that’s the absolute greatest possible example of queer success in pop music - 12 million albums, then you’re proving my point to be EXACTLY true.
Yeah I think that Bruno, The Weeknd and Harry Styles are the only male pop stars having global success. I don't know if US consider Bad Bunny pop, but his songs in Latam are considered very popular, so I don't know if US or UK consider him pop, but here he is pop.
Did someone ask for a male popstar? I've got an answer for you, K-Pop and J-Pop. Artists I would highly recommend are: Taeyong and his albums "Shalala", and "TAP', Jaehyun of NCT with his album "J", and Fujii Kaze from Japan. There's a plenty of male pop stars out there but you have to really look.
@@katgreer6113jungkook doesn't count now. He can sing in English all he wants. Everyone still seems him as a kpop star bc that's what he is and where he hails from. Same for lisa.
Also Prince was a Perfect example of A Artist who evolved over Time with different eras. Thats the key to having a long career, but you must stay humble as well for Long term
I’ve been an omar apollo lover/fan for 5 years now and even though he’s blown up a bit, I would still consider him very underrated/not as well known as he should be, which is probably what plays into his low ticket sales. Also as a fan from australia, I’m pretty sure he almost sold out his AU leg of the tour, so it might just be his more popular outside of the US?
Definitely agree about the double standards, I am glad you covered that. And you covered the different nuances to the double atandards eloquently. Personally, I would LOVE to see more pop boys getting more success. Im a big rock and punk fan, too, so I'm a big fan of My Chemical Romance, and I also think they could have been mentioned here because they were considered pop back in the early 2000s. Pop punk is like a whole nother can of worms, but thats my favorite genre of music for sure. I would love love love to see more women and Queer folks take the stage in pop punk and in pop in general. I love that Gay male pop stars and now Gay Female pop stars are seeing so much mainstream success. I would love to see Trans and Queer men and women and nonbinary peeps making waves in pop punk ofc, but I know we have a long way to go, especially cause there are hardly any female pop punk stars other than Paramore, and now Meet Me @ The Altar.
Good point. It`s a way to convince non-fans, just put on a great show. I`ve heard Dua Lupa on the radio, and it`s fine...but then I saw a gig of hers (on tv) and wow...! You listen to the guys, and it`s okay, and then you see a show...and that`s okay too. No added value.
Omar Rudberg has the potential to be the next male pop star. He has the voice the moves the looks and style. He has been killing it on tour this week. He just got signed to Atlantic record.
I personally love omar apollo, dominic fine and lil nas x. They just dont typically do as much cause they arent dragged as much for lacking what the women in their scene do.
The only kind of pop that male pop stars are very dominantly sucessful at is folk pop. All the biggest male pop acts, at least in the uk are ed sheeran, lewis capaldi, and loads of others like george ezra, Sam Fender (check out seventeen going under it's really good,), tom grennan
Its Wonderful That female Artists is Finally getting more attention, But There needs to be a balance with Male artists as well. Because there is alot of Talented Vocal male artist out there aside from Usher, justin bieber, Sheeran, and bruno mars
There are tons of great male pop stars, yall just refuse to pay attention to them because yall stuck on the females. One of THE most talented pop dudes out there right now is John Lindahl, and it's actually criminal how unknown he is. I'm talking VOCALS, DANCING! He has it all, but no one listens to him. Another one is Keiynan Lonsdale. Criminally underrated.
Bruno Mars comes back every blue moon and then dips for a couple of years 😭

Another thing about kpop, beyond just liking a specific member, fans can also feel invested in the dynamics between the members themselves.

@alo2285 also cuz kpop boys be putting in 100% like the pop girlies
What happened to Male pop stars? imo
*1.The impact of Hip-Hop.
This leads into other conversations about Pop being coded as 'feminine', while Hip-Hop, Rock, Blues & Country are coded as 'masculine', but this comment is already getting too long!😅
I agree with all the above. I’d even add Drake to that list because he has enough hit songs that allow him to be seen as a popstar next to his fame
You make a lot of great points
@@nameisamine yeah The Weeknd is the only one carrying this area I feel. In the same way that Taylor is and Justin Bieber had

I love Benson Boone I think he’s the next big male pop star
There's a larger expectation for singers to contribute to the songwriting & some have become well known for being very invovled in it like Billie, who very rarely works with other writers & producers (besides her brother).
the male pop stars that i actually enjoy are troye sivan, bruno mars & lil nas x.

J-Hope- also not much for him, however he has a lot of friends and connections in SK's queer and trans community
Jimin- has talked openly about how he doesn't align with traditional male gender presentation and although he uses he/him pronouns a lot of his works heavily suggest a preference for androgyny and gender-nonconformance.
@@shinycheyenne thanks for the long answer :)
I also feel like BTS member(s) might be queer, simple statistic and at least one of them would fall into ;) Their openness about supporting queer people and talking about artist they like (Jungkook talking many times about Troye Sivan early in career come to my mind first) seems like they at least are open minded (really hope it isn't calculated publicity stunt). Seeing how close members are I wouldn't be surprised if one/some of them is queer and others talk about support also for them to know they are there for them (hope that make sense as it is early Monday morning, I am commuting to work and my English is more than little rusty)
I sometimes think about interview where Namjoon said he wanted to be a father and Suga told him "you still can" - it did't seemed like simple "time passes, I am getting old", but more: I haven't found right guy to raise child together yet and in SK that might be hard.
Camryn Suzanne did a similar video about male R&B stars recently that was interesting
Unfortunately HARRY AND BRUNO do that once in 5years thing
hard pill to swallow: jimin or jungkook (of bts) (or any member atp) are #1 on billboard and million sellers but non-fans dont care about asian artists. lots of xenophobia still going on..but there is a reason why the bts fanbase is so huge. people just love to ignore their talent and want to dismiss the success bc „the fans are toxic“.. like okay? if MJ stan’s had twitter in the 80s they would’ve been toxic aswell😭😂

I wonder every once in a while what male singers are doing.
RI-FUCKING-DICULOUS. this applies to music in general, how can Drake still have defenders after how Kendrick lyrically assassinated him like, THREE TIMES. but god forbid chappell roan yell at an asshole on the red carpet, she's the one "doing too much" while Drake gets off???😭
their music also is just... meh (ON AVERAGE, NOT A GOLDEN RULE). timberlake justin's new album was mid as hell, jvke is just kinda... there(?), charlie puth's formula could be written in textbooks as a chemical equation, the bieber justin hasnt left his flop era in AGES, and even GOOD pop stars like the weeknd, like bro his music is good, but i wish there were more differentiation sonically between eras. like, the growth is there, but it's not there to the same extent of say, beyonce on renaissance versus beyonce on cowboy carter, you see?
edit: THE GASP I GASPED WHEN YOU MENTIONED OMAR. I DO NOT LISTEN TO ANY OF HIS MUSIC, BUT SOMEHOW HE LIVES IN MY HEAD RENT FREE

Because they get treated so badly. 3 women can kiss on stage at the VMAs but god forbid a man cannot slide down a damn pole in a music video 😂
I was waiting on you to discuss this it’s a highly interesting topic glad we got this video
I agree with you
Gotta show BTS LOVE!!!
Yes 🙌🙌🙌
Kpop. They took over with reviving the boybands, and focus in dancing and looks. Plus this must be specific to the past year, bc I was definitely hearing tons of pop buy guys in the past years. But I guess not as many new ones are popping up in the last year.
BTS exists. Yall just refuse to see them.
I agree
Girls have made the Harry styles tour their personality
Well lemme have a seat. I swear I saw somebody commenting where were the guys at the VMA’s.
I saw that comment
True, kendrick is the most popular artist atm bar sabrina carpenter
i think it's wild that joshua bassett wasn't mentioned.

I feel like men do not engage in parasocial relationships with their fans unlike female artists and kpop artists
Gay men are also a huge part of it, idk why they're riding a straight women, I understand not supporting heterosexual men, but also being mean and rude about their own fellow gay artists such as Sam Smith and Lil Nas X, should be talked about, i understand some can come out as cringe but if y'all gonna consider Addison Rae of all people gay icons, then Sam smith era masterpiece. I genuinely don't know the worship of heterosexual women I rather worship queer men rather then a straight person lmaoo
I love Benson Boone I think he’s the next big male pop star
great comment to be honest. Articulated everything I've been feeling for a long while.
Artists like Prince or Mariah didn’t dance lol and imo Whitney couldn’t dance and that doesn’t take away from the fact that she was IT 💛
bts went to military.........................
the fact that I genuinely forgot about the weekend 😭
Only person I can think of is Bruno Mars and Harry Styles. Other than that nah. Well hold on....Kpop boy bands well...tbh girl groups are more popular too idk any new boy groups but i know older boy groups. It's weird. I think the Weeknd is thee closest too.
The whole time I’m thinking “what about kpop” but you’re literally talking about western artists😭😭😭😭😭 I agree with u
i feel like, when harry styles dipped after love on tour ended, we got a decline of male pop stars that weren’t just 2010s hit makers. i feel like the emerging pop boys could be troye sivan, omar apollo, conan gray, or steve lacy, but most male stars are already in rap or country music. plus, we’re getting more of its boy band spirit from k-pop than we’ve had from america so far
P.S. Love your channel. On a major imuRgency binge rn (hulp)
Bruno comes back to make a check to pay off them gambling debts then disappears again
As an aspiring male pop star, this is interesting
Honestly, real life’s numbers don’t match this perception. In fact, I would say male artists are generally more popular than female artists! At least, with the average person. For example, here’s the top 10 biggest songs in the US this year (via Talk Of The Charts)
#1. Lose Control
#2. A Bar Song (Tipsy)
#3. Beautiful Things
#4. I Had Some Help
#5. Lovin On Me
#6. Not Like Us
#7. Espresso
#8. MILLION DOLLAR BABY
#9. I Remember Everything
#10. Too Sweet
There’s one song by a woman (Espresso) and one male/female duet (I Remember Everything).
Just some examples…
Also a lot of male artists are not exactly “pop”, they are scattered other genres. Noah Kahan, Zach Bryan, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Hozier, Playboi Carti, etc. I would say they are “pop boys” too, they are just not traditional pop
Stan twitter and the whole discussing around pop music online is overwhelmingly made of, lets be real, gay men. Which is why I think a lot of people in this stan/pop music online universe don’t really know, for example, that Benson Boone is one of the biggest new stars of the year.
the sentence "with pop music becoming more popular than ever" made me CACKLE
The pop genre is bigger than a few years ago for sure
“Not impossible because we see little nas x doing it time and time again”
he’s a c-tier pop star at BEST.

I’ve been an omar apollo lover/fan for 5 years now and even though he’s blown up a bit, I would still consider him very underrated/not as well known as he should be, which is probably what plays into his low ticket sales.
