  • Today I review the Slyrs, 'schleers', Amontillado cask finish single malt from Germany. Slyrs distillery's been founded in upper Bavaria after a bet.
When backpacking through Scottish Highlands, Florian Stetter realised how similar the environment is to his homeland of Bavaria and bet his friend that Germany could produce similar quality single malts given the same nature. Let's see if he won the bet!
Using high quality German barley and springwater, Slyrs double distill their malted barley and always mature their new make in white American oak. This expression matures in new American white oak barrels for 2.5 years before being transferred to casks which held Amontillado sherry for 40 years to mature and finish a further 4 years.
Let's find out this German whisky is similar to it's Scottish cousins and will the longer 'finishing' period effect the base spirit in a good way. Happy watching!

Nice one, Sertug, great gift from your brother ! This one was one of my favorite world whiskies of year 2023 & my favorite Amontillado finish since a long time (even if I did taste it once only). I have 4 other expressions (I wrote about & talk a bit about, but no full review on video yet), but this one seems different indeed....Green apples & estery, yeah I agree...Some of their other releases might be more oaky but the "Sherry Fass" (Oloroso this time) for instance is very nice & their multiple casks "51" is for me so far their best one...Last year I also enjoyed their first ever "local" peated release called "Bavarian Peat"...Cheers !

Glad you liked it Greg, thanks for watching.
Yeah this one is certainly nice, it just doesn't develop that much. I can't drink anything that had an oloroso touch but my brother tried the Bavarian beer cask one and loved it but it was near 200euros for an NAS which is a bit ridiculous. I'd like to try more Slyrs when I get the chance. Cheers

@@thewhiskyenthusiast ok forgot about Oloroso & you ! Yeah prices of their bottlings especially the limited ones, can be too high...as alas also some craft French distilleries ones...it has to be justified imho & it is not always...Result : No buy ! Cheers 🥃
