I remember going out and starting the truck for dad on those cold days while he sat inside and drank his coffee and ate his breakfast, those were good days.😊
I go through 4 emotions watching cold starts. Anxiety - with everything crossed, hoping that it starts. Saddness - because the engine must be so cold. Relief - when it starts. Envy - that i don't have one, AND I WANT ONE. I love the smell of cold start diesel fumes.
I’d say when I want to start my company’s old Volvo during those cold winter early mornings, that I go through 3 out of 4 of your emotions! I clearly don’t get the last one! Ahahahaha
You could feel the amp draw on the cold night start by how dim the lights got! I wasn't sure if it would start or not without ether. That was definitely borderline! Good thing you've got good batteries.
6:20 that shot and hearing the sound of the truck warming up just gives you the vibe. Truck sleeping in the cold and trying to get up. Let me sleep, its to early. Great seeing the cold start videos. Its been cold for the passed few weeks.
Just listening to that clanking sound sends chills up my spine and makes my teeth hurt. I’m always worried for the owner that one of the connecting rods is gonna come loose and vent a block. Lol 🥶
In weather like this dont be afraid to give it a snort of ether in the intake. Spin it over to make sure batt are not dead spray 2-3 seconds in the intake then start. You may need more in the real cold... It will start firing on all cylinders right away and stop the hard knock. People tend to be afraid of ether but its easier on things then a heavy diesel knock is. Its when you pump to much into a engine with dead battery's or a hot engine when the problems happen with ether. Its very important to spin over first so you know it will spin.
I listened to my Boss, and always let his four and a quarter Cats, warm up at least 20 minutes, before putting them under load. That time saves your head gaskets, and a lot of head aches. Stay safe out there.
Thanks for sharing your cold start. Chilly feels like an understatement to me. When I hear you starting up your ,I think , cherished existance I really wonder what goes on in your mind. Probably in your climate you are used to the noise, but to me first thing was: will the battery last and what is the impact of the knocking after starting. Please go on with your videos and I wish you lots of warmer weather

Cranky girl lol. Blue was too a couple of days ago when it sat for 4 days and I didn’t plug it in. Didn’t figure we were going to get a cold snap 🫰 like that haha. But I didn’t think to do a cold start video at the time 😂 either. Wish I did
@@callthemall oh I see! I thought all diesels had glow plugs up until I found something like a month ago that a lot of them don’t anymore and they just heat the air going into your intake lol. Nice trucks man! I love the look of these Pete’s
Hello Matt would it make any difference to build a Garage for the truck I think it would make a difference but I know garages are expensive to build and here in Ontario Canada it takes so long for a permit I don’t know maybe you can tell me do trucks have block heaters

Very hard on the engine and started. Not good. I would figure out a way to keep it plugged in on cold day. Engine rebuilds and starters not cheap these days plus down time
@@callthemallThey’re so nice when they work, but they don’t seem to last. Every winter about a third of our fleet needs them either rebuilt or replaced!
So why do you leave it unplugged for the first one .. Cold winter starts are very hard on diesel engines ... Also .. do you put oil in your diesel fuel ? The new diesel has no lubricity in it and the that engine was built to run on slippery diesel .. They run better and start better and will last a lot longer if you do this .. I put a quart of oil to every 150 US gallons ... I got over 4 million miles on my old 96 with no injectors or pumps .. well actually with almost no problems at all .. 16 years with no engine problems to speak of .. Just a thought ... @@callthemall
OK .. I guess if it is OK with you then it shouldn't bother me huh .. Why wasn't the tractor brought home and plugged in was my question ? Why leave it out there in the cold ? I just never did that .. I guess each to their own tho ... @@chasekostiuk4263
That may soon cool to people, but cuts into long life. I can’t believe you don’t have a block heater on that cat, or do you? 1 1/2 hour plug in time would help tremendously!
Yep I have a block heater. First start it was not plugged in as there’s nowhere to plug in. Second start was plugged in in my driveway, still a hard start
I’m retired now but I remember having that little bit of anxiety when it come to cold start. However, the smell of cold start smoke never got old.

I'm 60. Will aways remember those. Saturday morning going to work with Dad. He drove an White Western Star. I miss the old man

Today's truck drivers with newer trucks will never know this feeling ❤

Ether

It is preferable to have the engine cranking before spraying it, although not always possible, obviously.

By the way, I found your channel with the help of the Boston Trucker, he suggested you. Fyi

Ouch!! I make it almost 4 minutes before the rattle stops. That must make your heart come to your throat!
You do not have any pre heating such as Webasto?
Leave it running... does it have a glycol heater like a Webasto?
Oooff…. that’s hard for a engineer/mechanic to listen to, especially that second one 😂
Sounds like a big caterpillar dozer starting on the Alaskan highway. Battery work hardest in this video. B-trains are cool.

Matt, Another great video, the only thing missing would be a set of rain caps in those stacks making that clacking sound.. Old school
Do you ever take the dipstick out to see if the oil will drip, before starting?

Yes I will be building a garage but I’m a couple years away from that, and yes this truck has a block heater, and was plugged in for the second start
Wouldnt it start a little faster with a little gas?

Block heaters aren't common on rigs?
