  • I run through showing you where and how to adjust your shift cable for the automatic transmission. I also point out other problems you could possibly have beside it being a problem with the cable adjustment.

    Thank you. I was already told by a mechanic they can't be adjusted and I would need the linkage replaced. Looks like you just saved me from a repair I can't afford.

    Thanks for the video. I couldn't find what I was looking for until your video. I'm not much of a mechanic, but with hard times I'm kinda forced to do this stuff myself. It was a big help.

    Thanks for the great detailed video! It's much more informative than the Hayes repair manual. The AC/Delco GM Original Equipment part # is 1247764 (4 speed Automatic trans.; 4WD; Trans. code 4L60-E;). Rock Auto has it for under $100. I just ordered one for a 2001 Silverado.

    Thank you! I just replaced my trans and could not figure out how to adjust this. You're a lifesaver at this point. Also, I am going to go out on a limb here, and guess you live well North of the Mason Dixon Line, as that's a lot of rust in those floorpans and underneath. The great news is, being as thats a GM truck, it'll still be driving down the road, even after the entire body rots away. Tough trucks. I have owned nearly 3 dozen over the years.

  • @jaybeech1761
    @jaybeech1761 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Thanks for the video. One correction/clarification you might want to make: Those aren't threads where the front and rear shifter cables join. That is to say, they don't spiral. They are basically interlocking ribs that hold everything in position. Yes, the adjustment is made there, but it isn't done by turning/tightening anything. You remove that white clip (VERY CAREFULLY) then move the female end in or out as needed, and snap the clip back on. The clip might not go all the way into position willingly. Word of warning: I broke one, and as far as I know, you can't buy that clip separately, so you're out the full cost of another cable set.

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I think people understand threads/ribs look similar enough people understand fully what I’m talking about. I appreciate your clarification for anyone confused though. Cheers

    Also people , put the truck in what would be “D” on the selector , and put the transmission in Drive also . Feel each gear with your hand . Then adjust the linkage as its perfectly in the middle . 3 up and 3down . Helps with adjusting , old timer taught me

      @ Ruh - Thanks for that advice. I always start in park and then adjust to make it to first. Maybe your way is easier though I will try it out eventually cause I’m sure there will be a next time for this repair again while still driving these older trucks. Cheers!

    Thank you for this video. My old Chevy has been tormenting me for almost 5 months now and I'm close to putting it down. Put lots of new stuff on it in that time and yesterday it wouldn't crank over in park twice but did in neutral. I already put a new neutral safety switch on so I'm gonna try adjusting the cable when it gets dry out there. Which gear do you recommend it be in while doing the adjustment? The cable is pushing when it goes back to park right?

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life

    I have a 2000 z71. 5.3. My Trans is having issue. If I put it in drive it won't go into drive... but if I put it in first and go through gears by manuel it's fine once I reach drive the truck shift fine from there. Have any clue on what that could be ??

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeremy, I have never heard of this problem before. make sure your trans fluid is clean and filled. next have someone shift the truck while you watch the movement of the selector on the transmission. If everything looks normal the only thing I can think of is that the prndl also known as neutral saftey switch is bad. sorry I cant be of more help. My only thinking is that going the one way it doesnt find drive and truck thinks its in neutral. Then when you shift back the other way it catches?

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      nathan heagerty, the yellow piece is a plastic c-clip on the outside. It slides out away from the inner piece and then you can either make it shorter or longer by pulling it in or out. once you have it where you like then you put the little yellow c-clip back in place and your done.

    had the same issue this week. the cable was completely frayed under the carpet. ordered a new cable from napa $95 (should've bought it on amazon) and replaced the linkage lever on the transmission $10 at the dealership. now my gear selector indicator is acting dumb. not showing it in park, most of the time. Also the new cable seems really tight when selecting any gear

    So if it feel like it's harder than it should be to shift into gear do I tighten or loosen that?

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may need loosened. If you move the clip a couple times without success your cable is probably bad most likely or some sort of binding could be possible on the trans shifter arm or up in the steering column shifter but those are less likely than just a bad cable.

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      try moving it into park on the transmission itself with your hand. If you can then its a problem with the cable/adjustment. If it still wont go into park try removing the cable end from the transmission, if it still wont go into park then its a problem with the tranmission. if its in park but isnt reading on the dash that its in park then you need to replace your prndl loacted on the side of the transmission when laying under it.

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      well I do not own a 2013 but if the shift cable is similar to the 99-06 silverado sierra then you will need to adjust your shift cable under the drivers seat beneath the truck. Pulling out on the adjustment will actually make the cable shorter which in turn should make the shifter pull the lever on the transmission further helping you reach your manual first and second gearing. thanks

      No the adjustment is where the two cables meet in the middle under the truck. That white clip pops out and then you can take the slack in or out of the cable and pop the white clip back in.

      this is currently happening to me if I put it in D it shows neutral.
      If I put it all the way down to 1 it goes to drive. only then do I shift back up to D and it stays there.
      Also when I floor it when it hits 3rd gear it shifts into neutral do I need to adjust the cable? I have a brand new safety neutral switch so that's ruled out

      Damn so they haven't been able to figure it out? My friend said it could be the dash sending the wrong signal. But I don't think the dash can affect the transmission signals can it?

  • @aflaks

    what about transmission not getting to 5th or reverse (opposite end of this spectrum)

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no 5th gear on these transmissions. Only 4 gears and then overdrive. If you can get into park and then down to 1st gear manual selection then I would guess something is wrong with your reverse and overdrive but not due to the PRNDL.

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting... so the throttle body cable connects to your transmission on that one? Or maybe are you thinking that might be a throttle cable/cruise control adjustment?

  • @FantasyCustoms4Life
    @FantasyCustoms4Life  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    UPDATE: I've worked on a few of these trucks now. There is also another spot which can break that I dont talk about in this video. Its under the dash and the other side of the cable that goes to the shifter handle. Some of the plastic was broken that holds the cable tight up there and so it would still go into gear but then the cable wouldnt stay in place to pull it back the other way when you want to reverse or park.

      I'm having problems putting my 98 into park. With respect to the post above are you talking about on the shift cable itself under the dash or the brake interlock solenoid?

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@1Splat the 98 very well may be different than my 99-06 demonstration. However if it’s the same it just has to do with the cable adjustment that’s made about midway on the cable below the driver seat next to the transmission. As for the above comment I’m talking about the cable end breaking that goes to your lever on the dash that’s used to choose the park neutral reverse drive positioning.

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life

      I must have only dealt with aftermarket cables then because in the maybe half a dozen I have messed with have always been plastic if I think were talking about the same piece of the cable anyways.

    • @FantasyCustoms4Life
      @FantasyCustoms4Life  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a huge bummer man. If I knew exactly what was going on I would tell you. If it were my truck I would start with what is called a prndl, In other words neutral safety switch. they are cheap and not that hard to replace. I'm guessing if your cable has full motion going to all gear positions that the prndl is likely not the problem but besides another full trans rebuild I have no idea where to even start on this problem. Also be sure to check your trans fluid to make sure it doesn't smell burned or have any darkness to it and is in fact at the correct operating level on the dipstick. If all that fails you can try opening up the pan to take a look for any debris in the trans filter and also could change some solinoids out which are cheap as well. Sorry I cant be of more help to you.

      @ Tanner Williams - without the rear shaft in I believe it can leak right out the trans tails pinion shaft seal. Try seeing if that’s where the fluid is coming from and if so just install the driveshaft and shouldn’t be leaking anymore. If it’s somewhere else it’s possible it’s overfilled or something along those lines. Cheers
