The difference is that artists like Teddy are out to prove vocal prowess, which doesn’t necessarily lend itself to an emotional gut punch. Bonnie’s voice cries throughout this song. Her restraint is what makes it superior art.

Bonnie Raitt is an amazing blues singer and blues guitarist. She is the original singer of this song from 1991; it has been covered by many artists, but none of them can compare to her original version, her voice is so full of passion and sorrow and that beautiful understated grit she has. This song has been listed as one of the greatest 100 songs of all time and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The judge asked if he had learned anything. And he said, " Yeah, I Iearned that you can't make someone love you, if they don't" and so the song was born. Interesting that it was written by a man inspired by another man's statement and situation, but as MrLBoyd points out, it somehow sounds more authentic from a women. Oh my gosh, Bonnie is a national treasure! How great that you've now found her! She has a large catalog, as she's been a recording artist for over 50 years now. She is widely acclaimed as one of the best slide guitarists in the business, and is heavily influenced by blues, rock, folk and country. I recommend her latest song called "Just Like That," for which she won a Song of the Year Grammy just a couple of months ago. The way she sings that song is very moving and powerful. The way she vocally inhabits the character whose story is being told in the song is nothing short of Oscar-worthy. Other good reaction choices include Nick of Time, Thing Called Love, Something to Talk About, Good Man Good Woman, Not the Only One, Love Sneakin' Up on You. Also, it would be worth your while to listen to the original studio version of I Can't Make You Love Me because it includes absolutely stunning piano-playing by the great Bruce Hornsby, which is not to missed.

I saw Bonnie live 4 times---it was always fabulous; oh, one more: "Nothing Seems To Matter Without You". She dedicated this song to her Dad one night because he was in the audience. Bonnie Raitt (rate) is a force of nature who has been making great music for 50 years. Probably had her peak popularity in the 90s with a string of 3 or 4 hit albums in a row starting with Nick of Time. Her Grammy last year was no fluke, even if none of the children know who she is. She has played and sang with everyone in the blues world. I saw her live in 1999, she's amazing.

Bonnie won 4 grammies for Nick of Time, including Album of the Year. She has 10 grammies total. 🙂
What was special about the 4 grammies she won for Nick of Time, is she just got clean and sober from addiction, and like most artists, are terrified they won't still have "it" when they are not high on one thing or another. Can you imagine how she felt having her first album win 4 grammies including album of the year. The thought makes me teer up. 🙂

Back in 1971, I had the good fortune to go to a tiny venue in Washington, DC called The Cellar Door (max seating capacity at that time was 74). Boyfriend and I had attended to see the headliner, John Prine. But touring with him as his opening act was this 22-yr-old singer, no backing band, named Bonnie Raitt. And she blew us away. No dissing John Prine, who was spectacular (in spite of being smashed-drunk), but Bonnie held her own in quality and talent with John.
Bonnie back then leaned more blues and R&B, and she borrowed from Sippie Wallace ("Love Me Like A Man", etc). There's a clip from Late Night with David Letterman a dozen years later where Bonnie appears with Sippie and speaks to the 10yr collaboration between her and Sippie; Bonnie brought her out of retirement and recording again.
I can recommend her award-winning song "Let's Give them Something to Talk About".

Bonnie is so amazing but actually shies from the spotlight. She sang Angel from Montgomery in the 70s by John Prine and it's my favorite version. John loved it too. In the late 80's she swept the Grammy's with her album, Nick of Time. My favorites from that 80s/90s era are Something to Talk About, I Can't Make You Love Me, and Thing Called Love. She also won Song of the Year at the 2023 Grammy's for Just Like That. It will make you cry. Fans of other nominees were outraged and thus began a week of people "discovering" Bonnie Raitt. :)
This is a drop in the bucket of her discography containing blues, rock, pop, folk, and country. She's played or sang on albums by B.B. King, A.C. Reed, Sippie Wallace, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Ruth Brown, Charles Brown, Keb’ Mo’, and Joe Louis Walker.

Bonnie is very respected in the Blues genre. Bonnie has a amazing catalog. One guy who is amazing is Allen Stone, Sunny Days, Unaware, Brown Eyed Lover, and on and on.

One of my favorite artists! I have been a fan of hers for many years. Bonnie recorded this song 1st, but has been covered by several artists. Some of my favorite sings from Bonnie Raitt include Angel From Montgomery, Thing Called Love, Something to Talk About, or Love Me Like A Man.

Check our her early works. Plays a mean guitar. She's a great blues musician.

Bonnie's performance here is immaculate. This has always been a favorite of mine. Try listening to "Something to Talk About," it's a different vibe but totally awesome. 🔥

My favorite Bonnie Raitt song. Such a beautiful voice. For more of her, I recommend "Too Soon to Tell" or "Nick of Time". I've heard the Teddy Swims' version, too, but nothing beats Bonnie's.

She’s sooooo good. Dimming of the Day is one of my personal favorites, but anything by her is golden. Help Me Lord, Love Me Like a Man, just pick one.

Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin wrote the song and recorded it in 1990.
