The next innovation in the highly acclaimed line of Korg DJ tools has arrived!
The KAOSSILATOR is a new pocket sized instrument that packs Korg's world renowned synth sound along with innovative performance features into an ultra-compact unit. Anyone can instantly play musical phrases by simply tapping or sliding their finger across the KAOSSILATOR's touch pad -- no previous skills required! The KAOSSILATOR is a portable, travel friendly device that runs on batteries, so you can have fun creating music anywhere your life takes you, with seemingly endless possibilities.
100 sounds, man. After two days you know them by heart.
its badass how something so big can come out of something so small
i bought this synth yesterday .and what can i say - is wicked! and very simple to use
how can this possibly be so good for that price? this is ludicrously amazing.
Cool tricks with the Kaossilator: Hold down Scale and press Loop to quickly get back to the Program menu from any other menu. Hold down Loop and Tap and then turn on Kaossilator (you see DLY on the display), then hold down Loop and then press Tap; you can now select to Loop Length 16 mode (but you can no longer Fix, or Erase any unFixed stuff you save).
Also, on program d.84, tapping anywhere on the top and wait produces a rising feedback. To stop, tap anywhere else or change the program.
You have to plug it into an amp, stereo system, or pa. I occasionally use mine to test the range of speakers, since the kaossilator has an unbelievably wide tonal range for such a small device. There is next to no clipping, so especially in conjunction with a good quality pa system that thing blows you away. The depth of the sound is simply stunning.
I just played with one last night...this is the coolest thing i've seen since buttered toast.
Had one years ago, another (pink) one on the way! Great demo!!! :)
It depends on how you would use it in the recordings: chances are that I'd flesh out a "rough draft" on the KAOSSilator itself and then record it with each part in a different track to fix the levels so they're just right. The one big problem that I've noticed with the way it's been used is the redundancy factor, but that being said I love a good challenge so we'll see what happens and we'll be layering guitars + bass synthesis (keytar), synths, drums, and vocals too (we're a Cyber-Punk band).
my life would be greatly improved if i had one of these
I've heard that you do in fact need a computer or external source to save an entire song, but the amount of loops is infinite.
I wanted to add that having 100 loaded sounds is probably enough that alone this thing is definetly a good tool. You could easily get great odd sounds and melodic beats and lines out of it if you're creative, I am just saying consider the options. I don't have a laptop and the pocket size is nice so for me I might be interested, but still want midi!
The "electronic side" of our music will probably be built on the KAOSSilator but replicating it live will definitely be a challenge unless we use backing tracks, something that we're trying to stray from as much as possible. That being said, I can't wait to get my hands on one, we're definitely getting a Mini KP as well once we have money. You should definitely check us out, by the way: we're kinda like an industrial rock band that flirts with everything from Hip Hop to Drum 'n' Bass.
Man those last couple of minutes were sick!!!
Hell to my student loan on books, I'm getting one of these bad boys and don't do music haha.
ive got the kp2, its brilliant fun and
theres synths on it as well. also there's the sampling & all the filters & fx, i'd definately recommend it
Awesome, thanks for the demo. I have just ordered one from ebay, 99 spondoolies. Happy days. Also ordered line out to small male jack (Mic input) so I can record straight to my laptop.
This thing is so cool! I want one!
You can dial it in to a specific key, so you can't screw up and hit a wrong note. Plus it's got a hundred different sounds in it. It's a great device to break out when your ideas start getting a little too stale. Just dial it into the same tempo as your project and start pissing around and you'll come up with a new part usually.
Fade it out in your DAW like fl studio. Good God these effects are awesome, better than anything that comes with any software
* Touch sensitive effects module
* 128 newly developed effect programs
* Vocoder
* Synthesizer sounds
* Effects hold button
* Pad motion memory
* Fx depth knob
* Fx release slider (adjustable delay tail)
* Four sample banks (looped and one-shot
* Editor program included to build libraries of samples and edit them using computer
the voice looper sound was so sick!
@SpineTunes I can halfway agree with you there. The Kaossilator Pro costs double but has a bigger pad, can save things and switch between 4 loops so it answers many of the limitations of the Kaossilator. Korg crafted it to have 100 very good sound settings, and moving along the y-axis (up-down) makes changes to the sound for variety. I fix a basic rhythm and add and take away unfixed loops; I'm pleased with my latest video, "Dark Taxi."
Hell yeah man, I definitely plan on picking one of these up to mess around with while on tour with my band someday, I imagine that this would kill time in between venues like you wouldn't believe. Add a laptop and you could have an album ready by the time you get off the tour too, just imagine the possibilities...
Awesome tutorial! Finally someone spells it out...
i tried this thing out 2day at the international music show.. amazing
Che strumento fantastico! E costa anche poco per quello che offre!!
i really want one of these they look so kool!!!
It's cool the way they got a robot to narrate the video.
these things are amazing. love the 3d animations there..
Very good little beast. I'd buy it.
Thanks for posting.
If you are thinking about editing sounds, first of all drop the Kaossilator - it's an instrument, not an FX-processor. Secondly, consider the Kaoss-Pad 3 if you are serious about using effects. It has more fx's, better editing of fx, and also a sample recorder/player, very useful for both recording and performing. I don't know the price in US, but here in Denmark, it's about three times the Mini-kp, but it's still worth it - trust me!
i love this Kaossilator from KORG
@tomwebb123 I'm not complaining about it much. I just bought one! The "special edition" pink ones are being put on sale so I saved. I only hope the pink Kaossilators don't have a gypsy curse on them or something which explains the difference in price. I'll tell you how it goes. Almost surely I'll put out a video of my improvisation some time!
The Kaossilator and the mini-KP are two different things. The Kaossilator is a synthesizer and on the other hand you have the mini-KP which is an effect processor...
5:20 I may have mentioned it before, but it's not true you set features like Scale, Loop Length or Erase by pressing two buttons AT THE SAME TIME. Follow the arrows next to the buttons. They mean for that feature, you must press AND HOLD one button and THEN tap the other. Experts do it quickly so it only SEEMS like they're hitting two buttons at the same time.
i want Korg to make one, but, it allows more than one finger touch capabilites,
so you could make full chords on the piano sound.:D
well i've seen a couple videos of it already and so far this thing looks amazing, i will probably get it, thanks for the info
Damn, I'm just seeing this lol Very nice demo!!! I did a long one too hahaha How can you not!? These things are fun!!!
i like what you did at the end there!
well you can set the key and mode, choose what sound you want and dynamically change change the tempo on the arpeggiator, ect.. sure, it might not be straight forward to hit specific notes, but there is a musical degree of precision/control to it
Oh, I almost forgot - about that computer question: Well, the KP-3 has the sampling abilities I spoke of, and is able to store samples in normal .wav format onto an SD-card for computer use. Otherwise, you can connect the mini-KP to you soundcard and use any software to record - of course, since the KP's and the microKORG is two different products, anything you record will be on-the-fly and not coded into the microKORG, but you already knew that :)
Thank you SOOO much for posting this video. Very helpful!!
thank you thank you thank you now i know enough to buy it without having buyers remorse
At last, just the thing I've been looking for...another device that can be played without needing a single drop of musical skill, talent or taste!
Where can I get one?
And from my understanding a Kaoss Pad (I'm assuming thats what you mean by KP)is purely effects. You can't create your own music on it, but you can use it to alter whatever you plug into it.
Well, you are more limited in what sounds you can make than on a normal synth, but you still have to change the pitch of the notes, set the tempo, and choose multiple layers of sound. The difference is that you're using your finger on the touch pad rather than a keyboard. I guess whether that is easier or not depends on personal preference.
That thing looks like a left-handed design. If a person is right-handed they want to use their dominant right hand to work the pad, but their left hand has to curl around the top to get at the buttons placed on the right!
It might have been better if the buttons were available on the left, less of a stretch for the left hand.
OMG you're a genius! seriously, no sarcasm, that is the best idea i have ever heard! i would pay, like, $50 for a korg cartridge. and maybe there could be a wifi midi interface module that comes with it! its like electroplankton, but serious this time!
@v8bert Scales like Major Pentatonic (MaP), Minor Pentatonic (MiP) and Egyptian (EGY) are good only because your fat little fingers are less likely to hit a wrong note. For other scales it would take the precision of a violinist. But I'm not complaining, I just bought one. Some scale/key combinations may go really well together on overdubs; maybe a Kaossilator resource can give us some music theory.
@put0n666 The Kaossilator can also use an AC adapter plugged into the top (4.5 volts, positive tip). I am having trouble finding Korg's AC adapter, but a universal adapter set to this will work.
i have one. it's so much fun to play!!!!!
It has a L+R phono line out in the top right corner. Which with the proper cables can be connected to more or less any amp/recording device. Cables that convert the phono-plugs to 1/4" jacks makes it capable of being fully intergrated in your home studio or other musical setup.
This should also be true for mixers etc. It makes no sense that it shouldnt conform to the long standing standards of the trade.
kaossilator line output --> PC line input.
use either a stereo RCA--1/8" stereo miniplug cable or a 1/8" stereo miniplug--1/8" stereo miniplug cable.
By Both is my advice they work really well together
have fun..xxx
Thanks, I am now the owner of a Korg Kaossilator :D
Even Toys can sound good.
love the beam saber
Very helpful. well made. Awesome
if that thing came wit a modulation knob and a stylus id buy it
If you get one of these dont expect to be amazingly good like this straight away. Sure its called "easy music creation" becaue it is, But to sound this good its a little more complicated.
It works like crid co-ordinets. like 1,0 1,1 1,2 etc... So say that 1,0 is an A and 1,1 is a B and 1,2 is a C and so on.
So if your planning on gettin one of these dont expect to be amazing straight away :D
depends on your mixer. if it has an effects loop you best connect it therewith, otherwise you could put it behind your master out if you want to manipulate all, and between a single input (cd-player, turntable) and the mixer if you want to manipulate only one instrument.
Absoultely awesome review! good job! But it would be much better if you could record your own sounds to it!!! (at least 30 seconds of memory for your own sounds vocal samples!) then I would buy it!
@Alxasaurus Try connecting the Kaossilator output to the microphone input. I suppose if the voltages aren't matched, you shouldn't really be at risk of blowing up the computer ..... :o failing that, you could probably find an audio/midi I/O board that will connect through USB.
my friend has one its the best thing i ever played with while on acid.
point taken, its like comparing apples to oranges.
i want one! NOW!! :D
i don't like techno music but this thing is awesome i want it
I think this is a translation of a German version I was just checking out...in any case thanks for posting, very helpful.
i have a feeling that if i got this i would just sit all day and mess with acid bass
i'll buy one for myself for christmas
I know some of you might think I am crazy but I see this as an affordable alternative to continuum... at least in terms of some sounds,, I need to know more abt this device before I buy it though
This dude totally sounds like he is in Kraftwerk. "I'm the operator of my pocket calculator"!!!!
Nice guide. Thanks.
I want to hear digital talk in the next skrillex song!!!!!!!!
I saw this selling (on musiciansfriend) for $159.00 I think, now that I see this vid. it's a steal.
Holy shit I had no idea the Governor of LA was into Kaossilators
Mines ordered! cant wait!
I like this thing!!! I wish it wasnt so much.
aphex twin jsut plays quake live onstage anyway. all the music is preset into the laptop/s and he jsut presses play whilst he plays quake.
tis true no matter how much aphex twin fans are gonna deny it
Ik heb de opvolgers, maar dit is toch wel een leuke aanvulling.. lekkere sounds in deze..
That is awesome. I want one
This looks amazing, one question can I plug this directly into an amplifier?
or one could use it for live performances.
alot of dj's are starting to do that
With an audio interface, you could plug it into ableton and walla...
this shit is tight...
Ha ha ha ha the song at the end is funny
what an interesting product!
OMG i want one :D
Great ! I must buy it !
I seriously doubt it.
I'm getting one tomorrow, so I can tell you for sure.
Sensational!
That sounds like someone is really singing! 01:00
acid bass so awesome
i dont know entirely how it works..but im going to buy one and lean how to use it!!!!!!!!!!! i found a store near my house....ohhhh yeeeah!
so true satchurator17 .. this could do like ... everything!
mini kaosspad is for reproducing effects, kaossilator reproduces instruments' sound
i like how he uses his middle finger
this looks a lot cooler than the mini kp
Maybe so but that is really how it works and how you do things.
this is like the mandala drum pad but for fingers
Thank you!
That dude is so scandinavian
