This is still inspiring people ~12 years later. I just ordered an old-school yellow Kaossilator tonight and this has provided me with a ton of inspiration!
Thanks for the note. It's comments like yours that convinced the people at Korg that my "Yellow Album" had swayed a number of people into buying Kaossilators. Korg ended up being very gracious in rewarding me some other products gratis for my contribution. I thought that was nice considering they didn't have any real obligation. But the guys over at Korg seemed like very cool people; just as cool as their products. Thanks again for your kind feedback and have fun with the new toy. -G
Wow...just plain unbelievable. I'm ecstatic to discover all the insane possibilities of this thing after mine got delivered this afternoon...what a blast so far and I've clearly not even glanced the surface yet! Great tune!
I just got back from a friend's place where we hooked up my Kaossilator to a really high powered p.a.system with fully linear speakers and a custom built subwoofer. You wouldn't believe the sound that thing is really capable of, epecially when it comes to the bass pads.
the answer is a qualified yes. While there are a set amount of drum patterns, the combination of using the arpeggiator coupled with the variations created by the touchpad give the illusion of nearly infinite choice. Alternatively there are patches containing single drum sounds, and in theory one could build up beats by layering drums individually in the loop(not the easiest thing obviously). Remember though that all this hard work ends up being disposable as there are no save functions.
Awesome work with this thing. After watching videos on youtube I got this thing and made one of my own... only had it for a day and already made what you can see on my account. Incredibly easy and awesomely fun to use.
I had forgotten about the kaossilator for a few months now. Was going through my old favorite videos. Oh yeah. THIS is why I wanted one of these.. because of YOUR VIDEO. lol
Only a single two-bar loop is allowed (technically 4-bar loop if you're willing to lose the "undo" function). But within that loop you are allowed infinite layers of recording tracks as it digitally records each layer on top of the previous recording. On my album there are some songs made up of nearly 30 or more layers. And, yes, your choice of outputs are stereo mini-jack (volume-controlled) and/or stereo phono jack (set volume).
The title is "Arp A Type" and it's the first track on the album. There are 18 tracks in all. All are free to download via the link shown. Thanks again for your support.
Gary, I saw the Kaoscillator on The Gadget Show, came to TH-cam, searched and found your video - and ordered one ! Need I say more ? Korg owe you for this - 'Arp A type' is an amazing track mate.
This is the best use of the Kaossilator I've ever seen. I wasn't keen on the idea of using only the Kaossilator, but damn if you didn't make it work. I mean, this is music I can listen to on a regular basis... not just something I check out once because it sounds interesting. I'm going to check out your website.
@mattcav221 At the bottom end of the Kaossilator is a 1/8" stereo phono plug, for the headphones, so you can connect there too to record its output. I connect it to the aux. jack of my computer.
you are the reason i purchased the kaossolator just this morning :) so far i only have a roland D2 groovebox. thx for this great video. nice music! 5 stars
I live in the UK. Korg has been selling these for awhile in Japan and other areas outside the US. They were supposed to become available in the states as of last Jan, but it appears most online US music retailers can't keep these in stock. For a street price of $200 - cheaper than an ipod and more fun.
@mrpeanut25 Not so much, because he was using a scale called Minor Pentatonic. In the key of C, there are only the notes C, D#, F, G, and A# in it, from the center to the edge. Mostly he was sliding from one note to the next. But you still have to develop a violinist's skill with that and with the even more note-filled scales to hit the right notes without marks.
Wow, that's pretty impressive you were able to reverse engineer this. Obviously at the time I had all that info rehearsed out in my head but I never kept any notes. This and other tracks on the album, I'd be at a loss now to recreate without such instructions. Good job, v8bert!
@v8bert Gee, doesn't anybody read any more? Lol. In the instructions section on Loop (Phrase) recording, it says, "within the range 300-75 bpm, the beat count (1-8) represents quarter notes; within the range 74.9-37.5 bpm, 1-8 represents eighth-notes; within the range 37.4-20 bpm, 1-8 represents sixteenth notes." So your optimum is at or above 75 bpm if you can make your own rhythms from scratch and try to double-time things.
@v8bert The instructions say that, if you dial down to a low beats per minute, the Kaossilator will automatically cut to Loop Length 4 and then Loop Length 2. It is just not possible to store a very long sound loop.
Some Kaossilator tips: Holding Scale and pressing Loop takes you immediately to the Program menu from anywhere else. Also, in program d.84, hit the top edge of the touch pad anywhere, and wait. It produces a rising feedback. Stop it by pressing anywhere else or changing program.
It's my understanding that the Kaoss pads are more focused on effects processing, with perhaps some limited sampling capabilities. Unlike those, the Kaosillator does not have any audio input or effects capabilities short of the effects preset in its sounds. It is a sound source in itself, namely a handheld synth with a number of preset sounds and a loop recorder included. The recorder is limited to a small # of bars of internal sounds only. More detailed info is available on the Korg site.
Sorry, for the delay in responding. Most people seem to listen mostly to this opening track, but my personal fav is still track4 "Chill Loopa" because of the extended solo in it. It was recorded after a few beers and I felt at a certain point into the solo that the touchpad and I had become "one". Cheers, -G
it's a handheld synthesizer that has a bunch of different sounds including premade loops, drum beats, bass, leads, etc. basically, you can make your own really cool beat on a loop
@litlekarim33 No! The Mini-Kaoss Pad processes sound inputs and does reverbs and delays and stuff. The Kaossilator actively produces musical sounds like a musical instrument. One must likewise not confuse the Kaossilator Pro (green lights) with the Kaoss Pad 3 that has the same casing (but red lights).
awesome, just awesome! I decided to get one even before i watched this but now i only want it more, gah, I cant wait until I get my hands on it! sounds great by the way
@v8bert The Kaossilator Pro can do 16 beats! It will also sample sounds from a microphone and save your work on SD. It has 4 record buttons so that's like 4 separate Kaossilators.
@cjwaters9 There ARE no controls for the volume levels. Korg did a good job programming really good synth sounds and filter variation, and pre-adjusting the levels to compare well with each other. #35 is a bit overpowering though, and although it claims you can record infinite numbers of overdubs, of course you'll get a white-noise muddle after a while.
@Martzoerst I'm incredibly flattered. And thank you so much for your purchase. I've other music, some for free streaming or download at gkibler.com. Much of this is my commercial and soundtrack work which isn't so electronica-based but you may enjoy nonetheless. Cheers again for wonderful comments. Best, -Gary
it makes all its sounds (the sounds you hear here on the video) independently with no external help. It has no speakers though, so you must wear headphones or plug directly into a stereo or amp with the RCA style plugs on the top of the unit. That's why you see it so wired up here, both to the headphones (that I'm wearing) and also the RCA audio plugs on top going to my video/audio recording device.
First day with the kaossilator , I've just about got this tune down. My fingers are still a bit clumsy but I'm getting better quickly., Fascinating box, hours of fun and highly addicting.
Patch is no. 2 "unison lead" with the gate arp on, set to default pattern G.00, the tempo is at or around 100bpm. Scale used is MIP, minor Pentatonic, #13 on their chart, though I don't see any correlation to numbers on the arp display. NOTE: The scale name MIP looks more like "niP" on the display.
Great tune! Since checking this video a few days ago I've been finding out all I can about this awesome little music maker. I MUST HAVE ONE. Despite what a few are saying, I reckon you make this *look* deceptively simple to play. My guess is it takes a fair amount of skill and practice to be this good with it. Well done mate.
very awesome! i just downloaded the cd and i have to say, from what i have already heard, it's amazing, Gary! great job and thanks for sharing your music with us!! i hope to get the Kaossilator soon! ---Silenthillvictim :D
This and 17 other of my Kaossilator-created songs are available for free download on the link displayed in the video itself. This link is also listed in the "About This Video" section.
@gotchalk108 This and all the tracks on my Yellow Album were recorded directly from the line outs to a Zoom handheld digital recorder, an H4 I think it is.
Man I lost mine when I moved. This is making me so sad! I want my Kaossilator back! I'm going to break down and get a new one...or wait and get the pro.

@litlekarim33 They look the same, but mini-kaoss pad is for sound effects, where as the Kaossilator is for making music.
@haunteddragon With a Kaossilator the instructions say they come with "test" batteries that may have a shorter than expected lifespan. They were indeed very cheap made-in-China alkalines. I would suggest you replace those with 4 rechargeable AA-batteries (rated 2650 mAh or more).
yea i just noticed my mistake right after i made the comment but i couldn't find the comment to delete it, so ty for not freaking out and saying mean things
The Kaossilator comes with no cables or wires or software. It has no save capabilities and that's one of the biggest complaints. If you come across something you want to keep from it your only option is to record it directly to an external recorder of some kind via your own audio cables. Either using RCA audio jacks or 1/8" stereo headphone jack.
Fantastic. I've been listening to your album for two days now, my favorite is "Theremin Dub". But I think the whole album is genius. I'm also tempted to buy the device. I honestly hope you will produce more music on the Kaossilator.
@glkibler actually the larger touchpad on the pro takes some getting used to, but you have some nice additional options concerning the configuration of the pad.
yes u can u just use line out on the korg to line in or mic jack on the comp then u can use sound recorder to render ur tracks to the hard disk.@JacobDeadman
You can remove loops that you add on by "fixing" the first loops that you want to save. then when you ad to it and it gets too much you can cancle those later loops and go back to your first saved layer
I had that feeling too, I think because the pad area is bigger, and it looks more like a decent piece of equipment, than a phone! Amazon reviews say this is still better in some respects that the new ones.

Still one of the best Kaossilator videos, even as we're approaching 2020
This is by far the best song on the Yellow Album.
Wow...just plain unbelievable. I'm ecstatic to discover all the insane possibilities of this thing after mine got delivered this afternoon...what a blast so far and I've clearly not even glanced the surface yet!
Great tune!

Great gadget and synth , great music and skill man. Now I have motivation to get my hands on one. You are a great music composer.
the answer is a qualified yes. Thanks for the compliment. These kind of comments certainly helped convince Korg to feature the album on their site. Have fun with it. Cheers, -G
i got mine about two years ago and it is still kicking ass
Awesome work with this thing. After watching videos on youtube I got this thing and made one of my own... only had it for a day and already made what you can see on my account. Incredibly easy and awesomely fun to use.
I had forgotten about the kaossilator for a few months now.
Was going through my old favorite videos.
Oh yeah. THIS is why I wanted one of these.. because of YOUR VIDEO. lol
You produced a full album using ONLY the kaossilator? for real, that's mad, well f***ing done man!
JUST BOUGHT ONE TODAY!!! Coolest thing I have ever owned in my entire life. SOOO easy to use and sound good

I love the sound of that singing voice preset. Great job!
Absolutely stunning, this is actually music unlike most Kaossilator videos!
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
this guy knows exactly how this should look like. i mean the masterpiece. and he is damn good !
The title is "Arp A Type" and it's the first track on the album. There are 18 tracks in all. All are free to download via the link shown. Thanks again for your support.

Bought the album on iTunes today, it's awesome! Loaded in to my iPod, and will entertain me on my flight home :) Keep up the good work!

May I remind everyone once again, this is NOT a competition. And, please - and I must say I can't emphasize this point enough - PLEASE, no wagering.
best i've seen on this. Love at the start effect L,02.

Fantastic!

nice doing, nice idea
it's a surprisingly fine instrument
you sir, are a epic win for the human species

the Kaossilator is essentially a handheld synthesizer. There's a video around explaining it better. Just type in Kaossilator in the search window ^^
fantastic jam, I was in a trance man!
AWESOME - REALLY COOL
great sound out of this small box
I so want one of these.
omfg this thing is too sick ^^.. nice done man!
Great tune!

Being absolutely out-of-my-mind obsessed with the kp3 (I want one so bad!) then yes, I catch your drift :]
this is awesome!!!!
sei grande compà!!!!
@gotchalk108 This and all the tracks on my Yellow Album were recorded directly from the line outs to a Zoom handheld digital recorder, an H4 I think it is.
Agreed. you wouldnt know this was done on all one piece of equipment, never mind one so small !
@v8bert You blew my mind right there.
damn... that was brilliant

It works on batteries. You can also use an AC adapter but it's not included with the kaos.
Yes, 4AAs and headphones is all you need to make music on the Kaossilator.
